Katara:
Advantages-Sight, "reflexes of a waterbender," master waterbender, and healing abilities.
Toph:
Advantages-Hearing, Vibrations(could tell what Katara will do), 'best earthbender I've ever seen,' no holding back, strong.
As far as I see it, they both have qualities they help them greatly, but my tide is in favor of Toph. She has the qualities to face Katara 'head-on.' Katara may be a strong waterbender, but I think Toph will break through her.

I think some people are forgetting some things about waterbending and about the fighting style Katara uses.
look at her fight with the great jerky waterbend master.
did she stood still? no...she ran around and used her waterbending at the same time to constantly keep her opponent busy...in a Toph Katara fight I see this image:
fight:
Toph is the most likely to attack first becouse she is more bold headed and she would probably use a all power attack.
Katara hoewever doesn't always have to use her bending to avoid or something, in the episodes I've seen, Katara is quite agile and runs very fast so she could just avoid it.
Katars could (if there is lots of water) put Toph on an iceberg, so she wouldn't sense anything and couldn't use her earthbending, even if Katara just freezes Toph's legs, Toph wouldn't be able to bend as every bending needs its footwork.
also I believe that Toph would go all out as she is head strong so she would be more exausted by her attacks wile katara useally builds her attacks up in a battle.
In this battle surroundings is very important but you also have to look at the stargeties both benders use in other battles and because Waterbenders are experts in changing their bending to best their aponnents i'm sure Katara can exaust Toph more than Toph exaust katara.

Well since I like both Toph and Katara, I can't really say I have an opinion of who I want to win if they ever fought each other. But there are a few things I would like to point out:
I believe if they did fight, they would be evenly matched. Toph's just as good at earthbending as Katara is at waterbending. Just because Katara's a master doesn't mean she is better than Toph because they both have different styles and different elements.
But this is all just my opinion. I just wanted to point out that master doesn't necessarily equal better.
And just one question: why exactly would they be fighting?

hummm....ahhh i guess tough she owns on ground but if it was near water the waves of the ocean might disturb tough hearing....soooo i dont know

too many fan boys and girls lol
ill take it from a pros and cons point again
Toph by elemental power earth is got the shear upper hand and a sense of vibrations. Lets take the battle against "the Boulder". Toph listened for the first step and then struck on the second step. Now why do you think toph struck on the 2nd step? My guess is that she knows about how earth bending works and knew that particular move.
Now we take it from Katara's point
Water obviously is more of a lethal or non-lethal nothing in between (ice picks or water hits).
Toph probably doesnt know anything about water and because water wouldnt come out from the ground like earth benders do toph would never know there was water running straight at her.
So on a Earth-bender vs earth-bender tough would win. But against Water i think that Katar would win against toph strictly because toph needs vibrations to know whats going on water doesnt cause vibrations a would bunch last i checked

My Money'd be on Toph.
Katara's strong and fast, and she can use the transformations between water and ice almost perefectly. But Toph's just increadible. Toph could trap Katara in earth, and we've seen Toph just move people aside with no effort at all. As soon as Katara trips her fight's over.
The only way Katara could win is if they were fighting in the north pole, the drill or on Appa (which would be really cool).

I think that toph can feel vibrations on other land forms then just earth because when you really think about it, if toph and katara were fighting on a iceburg. Jumping and running and stuff would still make vibrations. So i think that she could feel vibrations on the iceburg.

Toph would wipe Katara out. The episodes that I have seen her in just show how unbelievably good good she is. She knows moves I would never think of. Also, if you think about it, Toph is always in the desert-there is no water around anyway.(Tough luck for Katara)

I completely agree with Hieu, because how would Toph know where the water is coming from? And, what if Katara just dumped Toph into a lake, or something, or went into a large body of water herself? Where would Toph be then? I think that it really does depend on the environment, but my bet's still on Katara.

^^thanks.
I'd also like to furthur Suyami's statement on the enviroment. Enviroment is a big part in the battle. If they were near a lake then Katara would win. Reason being like mentioned by suyami katara simply needs to bend the water and push toph into the lake. And Toph could sense Katara's movements, but has toph ever studied the water bending moves? Not likely.
The boulder lost because toph knew exactly when to strike which was when the boulder was about to step a second time.
Now say that they were away from a body of water. Toph would likely win strictly because toph would get very edgy and when ever Katara moved toph would attack. But unlike when you fight near a body of water, katara will likely have more access to a larger body of water as a defense when Toph attacks.
Its a stalemate now that i think of it. Enviroment makes a big role

Toph sees through vribrations but as we saw in the fury of Aang, Toph have problems seeing with loose particles like sand. Katara is smart and may use water bending to form ice on Toph feet and then break it up to make it loose and then Toph can't see a thing. Can't attack what you can't see or feel.

Again, I have to agree with Hieu. What he said makes complete sense. It has largely to do with luck, and environment. There is no flat out winner, they are both great benders, but as I said, it's mostly to do with the luck and the environment. Stalemate.

Adding to the whole environment thing and what Hieu said about Toph being pushed into water or something. If Toph is ever pushed into any non rock place, Toph cannot "see" so to speak due to the fact atht Toph requires solid rock to locate her opponents and solid rock is able to transmit small vibrations that are unique and very crisp as opposed to the sands or ice where the area is very loose and very shifty and thus making toph's abliity a disadvantage. Just adding to the environemtn argument that these two are definately evenly matched.

I agree, again. Oh, and just to take credit, I started the whole "push Toph into a lake" thing... Ah well, I'm just prideful. They're both amazing benders for their ages, and if they fought, it would end up with no real winner. It's all chance in that battle. That’s just how it is. *glares at non believers*

Well, a little off topic, but continuing what Hieu said, how come fire benders can't bend like the water benders? Or how come water benders seem not to be able to use their feet? (back on topic) If, in fact, Toph did fight like a water bender, what difference would that make? I'm just wondering. Would it give her an advantage?

I would think it would give them a huge advantage. When people advance towards Earth Benders it's already implied by the art that Earth benders hit something straight forward and not at an angle.
Take the Drill Episode. Aang tossed several stones at her. If he could use rocks like water bending he could toss it slightly the side of Azula giving her false security and then aang would redirect that rock back towards Azula clocking her on the head.
Back to the thoughts on toph: Obviously our imagination runs far. Say a person could bend earth like water. They could create a ring similar to Master Pakku's water ring (episode Water Master) and then create small spikes in the earth that is spinning. That is extremely Lethal.
And compared to a water bender they would have to freeze the water to create a similar effect which would cause problems since ice isn't fluent and it would have to go with the flow of the water which is hardly that easy

OMG you guys are so ignorant did you know the world has land on the sea beds!(just saying hehehe) so thewre you go onesec on top of and ice berg and BAM the next second you see katara drowining in dirt (muhahahahaha) unless they were on the moon floating in the air toph would lose because no sound with out air.... but then again katara isn't as strong as toph and probaly couldn't hold her breath long enough.... but anyways thats what i think

^^kenta hate to burst your bubble, but....there's water in the air. They just don't prove that a water bender can freeze the air and collect the molecular water crystals.
If you want to be technical about where earth is and where water is here's a bit for you. The Average Tree puts about 10% of all water on earth
^^copy whole url
Now if that is true then that still a lot of water. And if you REALLY wana get into detail. Katara could just bend the water in toph's mouth (saliva) and freeze that. Most likely Katara could control the water shove it down toph's throat and freeze it BOOM kill.
BUT, as far as the strength of each bender goes we do not know the full potential so it's hard to explain
edit: sorry i'm a bit aggrivated so if i seem like i'm attacking you i'm not. I just got out of a bad arguement about Azula -_-
