She had overslept. Again.
The small hammer on her alarm clock had worked futilly yet another morning, attempting to rouse her from her slumber. She had returned to the Island late the night before, spending more time than she had intended with Hangetsu. It was so easy to lose track of time with him; he made her feel so comfortable, so at ease, and — dare she say it? — so loved.
With a groan, she slammed her hand on the device, opening a bleary eye to check how far she'd cut into her morning ritual, squinting to see without her glasses. With a little gasp, she scrambled out of bed - she had ten minutes to get to the library, and had missed breakfast entirely.
The tall woman struggled into her robes single-handedly, trying to brush her teeth with the other, almost falling over in the process. She banged her knee into the sink, then wound up nearly poking her eye out with her brush as she tried to braid her hair. It wound up being sloppier than usual (and that was saying something), strands of loose hair framing her face.
With a quick once-over at her robes to make sure they weren't on backwards — or worse, inside-out — she grabbed her scribing kit and hurried out of her room with five minutes to spare. I can make it, she thought worriedly, if I walk really quickly.
She rounded the corner, and slammed hard into something — someone. Her glasses smooshed into her face, and she gave a little cry of pain as she stumbled backward, clutching the bridge of her nose where the nosepiece had pressed in. She dropped her supplies, and let out a groan of dismay. She'd never be on time now.
"Excuse me!" She rubbed her nose under her glasses. Nothing hurt more than having glasses pushed into one's face. She picked up her things, then readjusted her large, wire-framed spectacles to her face so she could look at whomever it was she had just run into. Whoever it was, they had to be fairly tall considering how tall she-—
"Master Tenzin!" Ren squeaked in shock, her mouth falling open. She bowed hastily. "I am so sorry!"
The serene joy from the night before all but ebbed away. This was not going to be her day, it seemed.

OOC: No problem. :] I'm a little thankful to have a thread that I can take easy. xD

She gave the waterbender a grateful smile, flashing the gap between her teeth. "Thanks," Ling murmured, feeling very lucky to have met such an understanding woman. The song ended, and she brought the other woman back up and clapped politely. "What say we go have a seat again? I'm suddenly thirsty." She held out her hand to lead Raeya back to the table.
When they were seated again, the young woman was surprised to notice they had been at Lemurland for an hour already. Where did the time go? She flagged down a waitress and asked for a glass of water. It arrived moments later, and despite being on a date Ling couldn't help but glance appreciatively at the waitress's swaying gait as she walked away. Guiltily, she ducked her head and grinned sheepishly at Raeya. "Sorry about that," she said, feeling like any explanation would just sound even more stupid out loud than it already did in her head.
Ling took a nice gulp of water, feeling very foolish. The water was refreshing after the dance, but it didn't wash away her embarassment.
"So, ah..." she struggled to find a topic, any topic, to steer it away from her faux pas. "Did you have any trouble with figuring out what kinds of people you were interested in?" Smooth, Ling. She pressed on, feeling each word like a nail in her dating coffin. "I struggled with it for a while, and how to tell my family, but they wound up being pretty okay with it."
She could have kicked herself. What if Raeya's family HADN'T been okay with it? She shrank in her seat. "Um... you don't have to answer that if you don't want to." The young woman was mortified - a rare occurence, but becoming more commonplace as the night went on it seemed. "I have this habit of being a bit of an arse."

@ Airi - I hate rulers too, which is why I'm grateful for photoshop ;x And you can always fix the background later, after you're done inking, making the focus with thicker lines than the rest of the background.

So far, the only distinction we've made is that you can't do active-duty police work, or anything that might stem from being a "beat officer" first (such as becoming a detective or investigator). Our information about the Police so far is limited, so for some areas we are using real-world rules: if they would require police training to be promoted or assigned a task, then they need to be at least an earthbender, likely a metal bender.

SINCE YOU WON'T REPLY TO MY THREAD... D<
Jae-Sun would probably be a good match for Ling, and it might be interesting for my acolyte, Ren, to meet Tenzin (they do live "together" after all!). I can't think of anyone for Ryari except for Bo.
I'd prefer community threads for Ling and Ren, and a private thread for Bo since Ryari is an OC.

Ling nodded, listening carefully as she ate. Hyuk-jae seemed reluctant to talk about his illness, then spoke with a sort of monotone that felt like a rehearsed speech. She wondered if there was a cure for his condition, but figured there probably wasn't, or he'd have been cured already. At the very least, it seemed like an inconvenient illness; but the more Hyuk-jae talked about it, the more terrifying it seemed. Teeth clenching, and tongue-biting, and he stopped breathing? Ling shot a glance at her sister. She'd have to brush up on her emergency help lessons, it seemed. She could dress a wound well enough, but this was an ostrich-horse of a different colour.
The young man broke off, trailing into silence and looking down at his hands. She waited. This was obviously a difficult speech.
I'm a Firebender. I can't control it and it... it comes out when I have a big fit. it's not my fault. I can't make it stop or go. But I, sometimes I catch things on fire."
The freckled woman arched an eyebrow. A firebender? She would have never guessed. He seemed untrained, and entirely repulsed by his abilities. And he seemed to think that they would be repulsed too.
For her part, she wasn't. So she told him so, with a wave of her hand. "It's just stuff," Ling said dismissively. "Accidents happen. If you can't control it, then what's the point in getting angry over it?" She shrugged. Aside from the two photos on the memorial shrine and Mei's records, Ling didn't really have any particular attachment to their things. Her thoughts wandered over to the box of Ma-ma's clothes under her bed, but after a moment's reflection she decided those, too, were unimportant. Sure, sentimental value, but no fire would ever destroy her memories.
Unless she died in one. Hah.
Ling realised she was smiling, so she rearranged her face into something more sombre. "Sorry, I wasn't laughing at you." She set down her utensils and folded her hands together, looking at Hyuk-jae more seriously. "It's really not a big deal. We can start keeping some buckets of water in every room, just in case. If Mei's home when something catches fire, she is a waterbender, after all." Like he needed reminding.
She paused, glancing around the compact, but cosy flat. If there was a fire, they did have a stove - they could always blame it on Ling' and faulty cooking. Or wiring issues. They did have electricity, after all. Whatever the case, there seemed to be some sort of warning, however small. If one of them were home, they could make a space, at least, and wait it out with him.
"What about when you stop breathing, though?" It was more concerning to Ling than the firebending. "And bite your tongue? I've heard of people dying by biting their tongue off." She was blunt, straight-to-the-point. She didn't want Hyuk-jae dying. Not only because of personal fondness for the young man, but also because she doubted that Mei would be able to take another death.
"You should tell us if you smell something burning, though," the young woman added as an after thought.

Airi's nonchalant attitude baffled Bolin. He looked back at his brother with a look that clearly said Can you BELIEVE this girl?, his jaw hanging open. Airi acted like they were the ones out of place and being weird. The earthbender dropped down and squatted next to her, peering curiously into her face.
"What are YOU doing out here?" he rejoined, cocking an eyebrow. "I don't really recommend napping around here." He gestured to Mako. "It's grocery day," he told her happily. "Growing boys need to eat!"
Airi was a piece of work, that much was certain. Not in a bad way, of course; she was a lot of fun, and so nice! But no normal person just decided to take a nap in the middle of one of the busiest parts of Republic City. She didn't look any worse for the wear, though, and Bolin stood, holding out a hand to help her up.
"You wanna hang out today?" he asked, oblivious to his brother. "It'll be great! We're getting food, and we can eat — don't worry, I won't get any seaweed noodles for you! — and we can just hang out and have fun!" Pabu chittered from his shoulder. "See, Pabu agrees! And-—" Here, Bolin dropped his voice to a whisper, "— I promise Mako knows how to have fun, it just takes him a little while to get into it."

Speaking of friends and doing what's best for you, a friend I haven't talked to in three years came online tonight. I want to talk to her, but the general consensus among our old HS friends is that she hasn't grown up at all (and maybe even became more childish, if that's possible). I miss the friendship we once had, but I don't know if I want to tarnish those treasured memories with something less pleasant.
EDIT: Well, I went for it. It wasn't a bad thing, but it wasn't great either. She just mostly whined about how terrible her life has been even though it's mostly a result of poor personal choices. Didn't ask a thing about me, then went to bed. #rude.

@sashu: Even best friends grow apart, honey. Keeping a friend who no longer acts like one close to you because of sentiment will be more hurtful than it is helpful. Tell him that you value his friendship, but you cannot deal with his immaturity — and he's welcome to be friends with you when he's ready, but until then you are not going to be party to his negativity. That way, the decision is his, not yours, and if the friendship is lost he only has himself to blame; and you can move on, knowing that it was his choice, rather than any shortcoming on your end, that ended the friendship.
I know it's hard, but when friends are no longer friends, it hurts more in the long run to keep letting them negatively affect you. Ultimately, though, the choice is yours. I speak from a lot of trial and error when it comes to exes. I am amicable with most, good friends with two of them, and am not on speaking terms with another two. The choice is always theirs, though: either be nice, or don't come around at all. I will respond (or not respond, as the case may be) based on their choice on how to proceed.

@sashu - Remember, you have the choice to not engage people who are being jerks. Admitting you're not that strong is strength in itself; it takes a lot of strength to admit that you can be hurt. If people are going behind your back, then they weren't your friends to begin with. If he texts you again tell him politely but firmly that you will not be talking to him any more. If he persists, don't reply. If people are going to talk about you behind your back, and if he's going to play games, then they aren't worth one nanosecond of your time. You deserve better, and you should surround yourself with people who think the same. I believe in you, and everyone on TARP does too.
