i think a cool bending art would be to bend lightning or electricity (not as an extension of fire bending but by its self) like be able to not only create and shoot but to change the direction of it and even say focus it into there hands to do lightining punches or kicks and absorb lightning and lastly be able to charge theier body with lightning to be able to move at super high speeds.

I belive that Azula does that already... Remember her fight with Aang in Return to Omashu, and against the entire group, plus Iroh and Zuko, in The Chase? Methinks that's already being done...

Think about this... the world comes back to being all harmonized and peaseful so eventually: a fire bender falls in love with a water bender or an earth bender. would that mean that the kids bending ability would be different than the mom or the dads? just a thought... T_T

This whole idea crosses over into the theory of sub-styles of bending. Like wood bending, wouldnt that be and extension of water bending, like swamp style water bending? And as for metal, wouldnt be confined to naturally occuring metals, as earth benders can't bend the metals produced by the fire nation? So in essence it is still earth bending, as earth benders can bend a multitude of different forms of earth, i.e. rock, sand, gems, coal etc.

I also think earthbenders might be able to bend plants. Don't forget when the one guy bended the plants to form a giant monster in the swamp.
And avatarsgurl, your post needs to be up to 200 characters. It is in the rules if you have not read them yet.

Ajada as Zanisha said before they were bending the water "inside" the plants...lol but I am going to write a letter lol and send it to the people that wrote the show and stuff...-off topic, but also on topic-In Rugrats...they now have a Rugrats-All Grown Up Version...do you think that they could do the same in Avatar and make a kind of another story where theres a new Avatar and its a WaterBender...but there could be the "sub-elements" involved in this story-line somehow...
It would be a very very good Idea lol I am going to write a letter tonight explaining this to them...and I hope that they will do this >_< meh think tis is a great idea >_<

You people are missing the point. Avatar is all about balance--in fact, the entire WORLD is--and adding on more elements would just put everything out of alinement. Everything you suggest could be shifted into one of the four base elements, and as for a child of benders from 2 different nations, I don't believe they'd be able to bend at all, to maintain balance. As has been stated, only the Avatar can bend multiple elements.

I think you have a point. And I doubt the show will add new bending styles. But it would be fun to RP. Also (side note) it actualy says that only the Avatar, Master of all Four Elements etc... It never actually says that no one can bend two elements or even three.
The restriction seems to be a) genetic and b) cultural so Someone would have to be born of benders, have the phenotype for it, and be taught the martial arts styles and cultures of both bending styles in order to be succesful. But it might be possible.
Personaly I love the idea of new bending styles just like martial arts can evolve and change and be added to or subtracted from I think the bending styles can do the same. I would love to see an Air bender who learned how to manipulate sound or light in the same way that a fire bender can manipulate lightning.

I'm pretty sure that you can't have more than four. If you are familiar with alchemy and magics in the real world, the elements are broken up into Five sections: Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, and Spirit. Others break the elements up into Earth, Fire, Water, Metal, and Wood. Either way, they don't leave much more open for any other bending elements.

Metal can't be bended because it isn't a natural Element, it's man-made. Plants (Wood) can be bended because of the Water in them. So the Chinese Elements are eliminated.
Spirit, Soul, and Void are the ones that other cultures usually bring in, all of which are the Avatar (Void can be seen as Space and other worlds, Spirit World anyone? lol)
About the only Elements missing are Light and Shadow, and if you take those into their basic sense (Not their complicated ones), then Light fits into Fire and Shadow into Earth.
That takes care of all basic elements, which leaves Chaos, Balance, and Neutral, all of which is basically just a "stasis" of the other Elements, so they can't be truly counted.
I know this topic is dieing, but I figured why not lol

Metal is a natural element it's made in the ground. Also they're in the ground and are ore. and time bender would be cool or maybe a plant bender.

Actually, I agree with Zuki somewhat.
Iron, Silver, Gold and other metals are all found in the ground, that's where they're mined. We smelt them together into alloys for our own use, but even when fused they're still composed of natural products.
Lava is just melted rock, so earthbenders should be able to control it. But in the episode "The Avatar State," a fire-bending avatar is shown controlling the lava, moving it forward.
But Fire Benders could shoot lasers, intense beams of heat, and Airbenders could send vibrations through their air and control them. In the fantasy world, sound could even cause bashing damage.
Controlling time's almost as stupid as controlling shadow. Shadow's just slight absense of light.
All in all, it just depends on the creativity of benders and scientific loopholes.
EDIT: Also, I think if a fire and a water bender had a kid, it'd bend fire, water, or nothing.
