A year has passed since Fire Lord Zuko ascended the throne, and it seems like trouble is brewing between the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom once more. The Fire Lord and the Avatar began the Harmony Restoration Movement to restore the Fire Nation Colonies to their pre-war state by bringing any Fire Nation nationals back home, but for many of the citizens — of mixed Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom … Read more ›

Middle Ring

"I'm late, I'm late, I'm late," were the thoughts that zoomed through the young Earth bender's mind as she zigged and zagged and zoomed through the bunches of people in the streets of the Middle Ring. Despite her best efforts she had found herself caught up in the mayhem known as morning pedestrian traffic. Earth kingdom citizens were out and about, either trying to make it to school or make it to the monorail. Maybe they were just out. Yes, that was it; they were just out, having been placed their to keep Kong from getting to where she was scheduled to be. These were the ideas running through her brain while Kong scampered toward the Middle Ring Library. She could see the edifice over the heads of everyone else occupying the streets.

By now her father had probably discovered the letter. And in turn he had probably woken up Mrs. Shi Yang and read the letter to her. And in their naive mindset, they probably disregarded the letter — chalking it up to a young girl's sense of ambition. But their daughter was too smart for that. She would come home later that evening and nothing will have changed at all. This was good. Kong had at least twenty-four hours to make it out of the city.

There they were. The front steps to the Library were quickly approaching. Or was Kong just getting closer to them? Yeah, that was it. The excitement was rushing to her head and causing her thought process to fall off by the wayside. The sixteen year old would have to find a way to regulate her new found emotions. She used to be so calm. That was, before she met... him. Tenshio stood there, standing beside the steps. He looked ready to go, and so was she. A smile was plastered onto her face as she walked up to and greeted him. "Good morning, Tenshio."

Middle Ring

Tenshio kept an eye out for Kong, but didn’t think he would be able to spot her in the endless flow of people on the city streets. It seemed as though the city contained an infinite number of people. Of course, that was impossible, but appearances could be deceiving. And the citizens of Ba Sing Se kept coming. It was amazing that they managed to avoid being crushed in the mob.

The Waterbender caught site of his new companion and stood as she extricated herself from the street and approached the library. He answered her smile with one of his own. ”Good morning, Kong. Do you have a list of what you want to buy in the Lower Ring before we leave the city?” He hoped she did. He wasn’t in the mood to browse the stalls and see what there was to buy, especially since at any moment Kong’s parents might decide to forcefully retrieve their daughter. It would be better, at least in his mind, if they left quickly.

(OOC: Sorry it's so not good.)

Middle Ring

Though the hustle and bustle was very much alive all around them, Kong felt as though for just now it was only her and her newest friend, Tenshio. She nodded as he spoke, trying to show enthusiasm for the journey on which they were about to embark. Then she realized how silly it might have appeared, because she was nodding to a question that she should not have been answering with said gesture.

"Well if mental lists count then yes, I do." The excited young spirit would follow the statement with a giggle. Indeed she had thought about what she wanted from the marketplace, and five gold pieces should be able to cover it all: non-perishable food stuffs, medicinal roots, a traveler's cookware set and Jasmine leaves - for tea later on down the road. "Shall we go then?"

(Don't worry about it at all.)

Middle Ring

It was incredibly easy to see how excited the girl was. That made sense; he had been just as animated when he had first left his home. But for Kong, perhaps the journey meant more than it had to him at the time. After all, he had not come from a restrictive home. From what he knew of typical upper-class families and what little his new friend had said about her parents, it seemed as though the Earthbender had. Getting away from that must have seemed like complete and total freedom to her. Tenshio just hoped that her mood didn’t change when she discovered just how boring traveling could get. Though, maybe it wouldn’t get as dull as it had before they met. After all, the whole reason he had agreed to let Kong come with him was to alleviate his apathy.

The Waterbender nodded. ”Sure. After you,” he said, motioning toward the street. The young man could have taken the lead, but thought that might not have been the best idea. After all, he wasn’t familiar with Ba Sing Se, and getting lost would not be a good way to start their journey. Besides, who knew what they might run into in the many alleyways and streets of this enormous city?

(I'm going to go ahead and time skip, ok?)

Lower Ring

The ride on the monorail to the Lower Ring was nothing short of spectacular; at least through the eyes of a young woman about to embark on such a journey, it was. While everyone else sat through the stench of boiled cabbage and musk - the hardworking man's natural cologne, Kong only spelled opportunity and good tidings. Looking out over the slum of Ba Sing Se, she could see the people walking around. Things needed to be bought. Items needed to be bartered and traded. But where were all of these busy bodies going after their trip to the bizarre had come to an end? Back home, to live their tedious lives under the watchful eye of the Ba Sing Se government. What made Shi Yang different? She would leave the market and be on her way to some faraway land, meeting new people, learning new things and satisfying her sense of bewilderment.

The tram came to a stop.

Her first stop was at an elderly lady's small kiosk. It was stationed between the hut of a fish monger and a woman trying to sell flower seeds. Seeds guaranteed to help you grow the most beautiful garden in all of Ba Sing Se, and fish said to have been caught in the clearest waters of the ocean.

"And how long will these rice balls last, ma'am?"
Kong continued to go through her stands, checking everything for ripeness and a remote expiration date. The woman promised that everything was in season, but it was best to double check.

Lower Ring

In contrast to his new friend, Tenshio found the tram ride to be dull. The tram was simply a way to get from one place to another. Sure, it offered a decent view, but when one considered that they were looking out upon the least beautiful part of the city, the whole experience became much less enthralling. Yet somehow, none of this appeared to be occurring to Kong. The girl looked thrilled to be going into the Lower Ring. It was quite adorable to see the teenager so excited. The Waterbender could only imagine how happy the Earthbender would be when they finally stepped outside Ba Sing Se’s famous walls.

The tram came to a stop, and the blue-eyed young man disembarked right behind Kong. In no time they were out among the other shoppers making their way through the stalls of the Lower Ring. Tenshio wasn’t the kind of person who liked to shop, so he trailed behind his friend, stopping only when an item on his list caught his eye. He wasn’t looking for anything expensive or rare—just non-perishable food, spark rocks, necessary things like that—so his shopping was over quickly and he was ready to leave. He could see that Kong was enjoying herself, though, and so rather than put an end to her fun he allowed to browse as much as she wanted. It was very possible that this would be their last chance to shop for a while, so they might as well enjoy it.

Lower Ring

The dull colors of the Earth Kingdom were well represented all around her, as Kong noticed the yellows, greens, and browns being worn all about. Her traveling ensemble made her fit in. Admittedly, she loved it.

Flicking the brown hair out of her eyes with a quick snap of the wrist, the young woman moved from stall to stall. In fact, this was the last stall that she needed to visit. Food items had been bought already, and medicinal supplies had also been stocked up on. Kong didn't know if Tenshio was trained in healing, but she had read that the art was traditionally reserved to be practiced by tribeswomen. Rather than insult Tenshio by asking him directly, she just assumed he didn't. Surprisingly, the green pack on Shi Yang's back was not at all that heavy. She had bought it, too, as a mean of transporting all of the other objects she had purchased that day. It had the kingdom's symbol stitched into it for all to see. No matter where she went, Kong would not forget where she had come from.

But where was she going? She had left the decision up to the Water Tribe native, but did he really even know? Certainly they would need a map to help guide their travels, and that was what Kong was shopping for. She looked over the table of a print store, overlooking several user manuals and almanacs. Finally, the maps. Her eyes landed on one that covered the entire globe, and the characters were easy to read, too. It was paid for with her final coin piece.

The shopping spree was officially concluded. Standing on her tip-toes and trying her best to look over the heads of everyone else in attendance, Kong searched for Tenshio. She was ready now.

Lower Ring

They had been separated by the crowd. That was annoying, but to be expected when people packed the streets looking for interesting products to buy. Tenshio just hoped that he wouldn’t end up too far from Kong, as it would become impossible to find the girl through the mob around him. The young man tried to keep an eye on the Earthbender, but her neutral-toned clothing blended in with everyone around her and made it hard to distinguish her from anyone else. There was nothing the Waterbender could do but dive into the flow of people and hope to find her. Grimacing at the unfortunate task before him, Tenshio began his search.

He had thought there were too many people in the Middle Ring, but that was nothing compared to the crowd around now. The blue-eyed teenager could barely move without brushing against someone. The problem was that none of the people he brushed against were the one he was looking for. Tenshio shook his head, frustrated. This was ridiculous. How hard could be it to find a girl on a small street? Apparently, it could be near impossible.

Then, something caught his eye. A closer look confirmed his suspicions. He had found her. The Waterbender quickly made his way over to Kong, smiling in relief when he reached the brown-haired teenager. He guessed, from the fact that Kong had appeared to be looking for him, that she was done with her shopping. Good, they could leave. Tenshio didn’t dislike Ba Sing Se, but he was ready to be back out in nature, where he wasn’t being crushed by a mass of people. ”Are you ready to go?” he asked his companion, hoping for an affirmative answer.

Lower Ring

Shi Yang searched devotedly for her sky-eyed companion. But all she saw around her were her own people. People who looked like her, and believed in many of the same things she believed in. They probably didn't talk like her (given she'd spent half of her life being taught not to speak like the people of the Lower Ring), but they even smelled like her! They smelled like Earth. Oh, how she was going to miss them all. Not individually, but collectively. These were her people.

Kong's mind began to do something it hadn't done in almost twenty-four hours - brainstorm. How would she govern herself outside of the wall? Could she be a testimony to the great nation of the Earth Kingdom, or would she shame them all somehow? Could she survive not being around people like herself? She had wanted to leave, yes. But she'd never left before. Could homesickness kill her? Would she ever see her parents again? Her parents! What were they doing right now? Did they care that she was gone, or were they going about their lives like normal? Thoughts raced back and forth in the teenager's head. Her head was actually beginning to hurt. Was this the right thing to be doing? Certainly she'd come too far to turn back now, but she still wondered if it was right.

And then an out-of-place pair of blue eyes, the sky-eyes she had been searching for, targeted Kong. Tenshio had found her, and was making his way over. This was the right thing to do. One look at him, and she knew. He was a friend now - she had to keep telling herself this to embed it in her mind. She couldn't let him travel alone after telling him that he would have her beside him to keep him company. And besides, she owed it to herself... this was what she wanted. With a reassuring exhalation, the Earth bender stood waiting for Tenshio to make his way to her. She listened to his question before replying, "Yes. I am all ready to go." A smile would seal the deal, hopefully.

Lower Ring

As he waited for his companion’s answer, Tenshio’s head began, once again, to fill with doubts. Did he really have the right to take this girl from her home, from all she’d ever known, even if it was her wish? Kong seemed so excited for the journey; if it didn’t live up to her expectations, that would be his fault, wouldn’t it? Of course it would. He was the reason she was leaving, after all. The Waterbender tried to tell himself that he was wrong. Kong could just as easily decided to travel with someone else. But she had chosen him. And so it fell to the blue-eyed teenager to make sure the Earthbender enjoyed herself. And he had absolutely no idea how to do that.

The main problem, the young man thought, was that he knew so little about his new friend. What did he know? That she was a member of the upper class, that she was an Earthbender, that she had a thirst for knowledge, that she liked tea. Not much to go on. How would he entertain her out in nature, where there was nothing to focus on? The Waterbender had a feeling that there was quite a bit of interrogation in his future. He was sure Kong hadn’t gotten to ask nearly as much as she wanted to the day before. The sky-eyed teen wasn’t looking forward to that.

Tenshio was distracted by his thoughts, and so barely heard his friend’s words when she answered his question. He answered her smile with a smile one of his own, too preoccupied to put actual emotion into it. Well, at least they would be leaving this city, with its constant activity. The Waterbender was really starting to appreciate the stillness of nature. Realizing that the girl was probably waiting for some sort of response, Tenshio spoke quickly. ”Well, should we go then?”

*Lower Ring - Underground HQ*

...It still wasn't enough, was it ? It was getting tiresome and annoying. Having to repeat the same moves, over and over, time after time, failure after failure. The young man didn't even feel like he was getting any better at this. Everytime he managed to correct a mistake, another one appeared, and while trying to fixing this one, an older one that was supposedly corrected simply jammed the whole thing, and he was forced to do it again... Joychi didn't understand what was going on, what the problem was.

But the problem was very obvious. He was tired and on edge. Being tired made his moves less accurate and steady than they should have been, and being on edge made him lose focus of what moves he was supposed to make, or how he was supposed to make them. Moreover, his earthen gear was becoming less efficient as he lost energy. The soles would crumble on the ground while he slid, or the gloves would stop sticking to his hands while he was hanging on the wall in mid-air. It was getting less and less manageable as time passed, even though Joychi was giving it his best. But he was not a Dai-Li agent, he didn't think about himself or the organization while doing this but about their goals and the task that had been given to him regarding them. The greater good. This was the very reason he kept trying despite becoming a real mess.

When nightfall came, he let himself fall on the ground, amidst the ruins of the wall he inadvertently destroyed so many times. He felt so tired and hungry, having practiced almost all day long. He hadn't even done his prayer, so focused as he was. But now the Lieutenant was a bit too tired to stand up and create the monument to which he'd pray. His breath was so heavy he wondered if his lungs weren't at their limit - it would be very pathetic to die of choking right here just because he overtrained and his lungs gave up. His eyes were staring at the sky, not thinking about anything other than what he'd learnt today. His mind was retracing his steps through the day, the moves and skills he'd learnt and practiced...

"I present my... self to... your service..." He began praying. "I devote my life to your... care, I vow my soul to... being your might..." Joychi was now attempting to strengthen his body for more practice by using his faith. But it was hard to pray coherently while panting like this. He quickly realized that, and that there was no solution to this problem as well. He really did need to rest a little... and to eat. Maybe now was the time to think about himself more than the greater good. The dark-skinned man joined his hands like when bowing and finished that prayer in his mind, eyes closed and breath almost still.

Once that was done, he rolled on his stomach and pushed himself standing. The strength in his legs was not all gone, but he still had trouble walking straight while moving towards the other end of the alley, opposite of where the girls were training. His first objective right now was to eat, so that he could rest afterwards and get better. This kind of training was not the kind where he would have time to think of something else - like feeding, for example. As he exited the alley, he began wandering a bit in the streets... and got lost.

Two hours later, a much better Joychi came back into the alley. He seemed to be standing on his two feet rather well, and his strength seemed to have come back, for the most part. But he didn't seem to be doing very well, despite now having a better form. While he'd gotten lost during this time of wandering, the Lieutenant had run into one of those charity food places. Of course, it cost him a copper piece, but at least now his energy was back, and he wasn't tired anymore - if a bit disgusted by the bland taste of the food. At any rate, he was back full force.

The first thing he did, once back into the alley, was create rock shoes and gloves to keep training. Afterwards, he thought about the moves and recommendations he'd been given by Long Feng and repeated the movements with his limbs, though without moving or Earthbending. He did this several times, without leaving this spot, before deciding he was ready to try again. With a stomp of both feet, he created another wall behind him, and immediately swung his arms backwards to slide across the ground, since his stance was taken the moment he stomped the ground. From what he could feel there was no obvious problem with his movement or trajectory. Even when he stopped and turned round, the motion was still good. And when he stopped in front of the wall to look back at the ground, he was almost surprised, but especially glad, that it was still as... dirty as it was before he slid.

Just to be sure, he performed that twice again. There would be no relying on luck when he'd have to teach the other men. Fortunately for him, it wasn't luck that allowed him to do it right, as the other two attempts were a success as well. Upon coming back towards the wall, Joychi jumped forward and stuck to the wall, without breaking it or fissuring it too much - just a little around his toes and fingertips due to the rock sticking to rock. Checking his stability and position, the Lieutenant proceeded with scaling that wall, and sliding down. For this one, he didn't need to try it again, because he'd already been quite aware of how it worked. As long as the gloves remained and his jump didn't break the wall, he would be alright... hopefully.

While stuck in mid-air, an idea suddenly crossed his mind. Although he'd never clearly seen the Dai-Li do it, he knew they could slide along walls like they could slide across the ground. What a prowess it would be for him if he actually managed to imitate them, without Long Feng even teaching him ! But doing it right away, as he had only just mastered sliding across the ground... that was a little bit reckless, and maybe even a waste of time. Still, Joychi felt confident at the moment, that's why he wanted to at least study how it worked. So he slid down to the ground and pictured it in his mind.

'Sliding along the wall. That means moving along the wall while sticking to it... Unlike sliding down, where it's easy to let gravity take me down, this time I have to maintain a straight trajectory..' The Lieutenant thought while examining the wall, stroking his chin with his rocky finger. His eyes were looking from one edge of the wall to the other, trying to imagine the distance in between being the ground, and somebody sliding across it... But gravity seemed to- "Wait ! Maintaining a trajectory, I can do that !" He told himself excitedly, rising his finger.

The young man then positioned himself right in front of the wall, literally at its feet, in horse stance. Then he stomped the ground and struck the wall with both palms at the same time, before making the motion of pulling upwards. This made the bit of ground he was standing on slide up across the wall, supporting his weight. Being lifted from the ground while still standing sparked a feeling of excitement in the young man, believing he was only inches away from performing the wall sliding technique. "I just need to behave like the platform I'm standing on, and it will work." He told himself while the platform reached the top.

He looked at the wall on his sides. Both of them were long enough for him to try, and probably solid enough that even a mistake bending his gloves to them wouldn't bring them down... Still, he decided to try on the other building, preferring to avoid the risk of accidentally crushing some of the Underground members... After a deep breath, Joychi launched himself against the building's wall and stuck to it with fingertips and toes. That was one thing done. Now remember what Long Feng said: push with the right arm, keep legs implanted, steer with body. Though this time he'd also need to use his left hand to manage the balance.

'There I go.' The young man thought while moving his left leg upwards, then letting go of the wall with both hands and swinging his right arm back. This had the desired effect of moving in a straight line at fast pace, but he had to clench his fist as hard as possible to handle the balance problem. He didn't know gravity was so hard to handle while moving in mid-air - except when "flying" or just jumping in a direction, but those didn't count. At one point, after he crossed almost the same distance as on the ground, his left shoe gave in to the unstable balance and he fell to the ground, rolling on a few feet. Thanks to his reflex of softening the earth enough before impact, no harm had been done, even though he was now a bit dirty. Nevermind that, as the young Lieutenant lifted his eyes to look at his deed, he became very glad and proud to see a long trail of dust going from the wall to his location. This was not perfect, but at least he'd managed to develop this skill on his own. There was a wide smile across his face... right before he collapsed and his earthen gear crumbled to pieces. It had been a good day.

((Alright let’s get this ball rolling again))

Lower Ring – Underground HQ

There was an enjoyable shiver throughout the compound when he arrived that midday. It was an expected response, not only had he arrived in the garb that fit only his enemies, but he failed to make it known that it was he, rather than an agent, who was walking through the back alley just before entering their most humble abode. Thankfully though, he managed to remove his dark green li. Right after he entered, he quickly returned the empty container to everyone’s favorite apothecary, Mahone. And then, he went about to the two required individuals and asked for them to meet him just before the sky began to turn orange. This plan was already hatched in his mind, it was already formed and just required the proper briefing before being implemented.

With those tasks performed upon his arrival, Long Feng waited by the table for their leader, Suki, and the young lieutenant, Joychi. Hopefully, the young, black, earthbender spent the day perfecting the techniques that would be required for their trip. They would, after all, be a necessity to not only make it to the Upper Ring, but to also enter the palace without alerting the guards. Those techniques were also paramount when it came to escorting their plunder out of the palace itself. The only thing he could do now was hope that they bender was up to the challenge. He could not expect that from his leader, she was not a bender and thusly would have to ride on someone’s back. Preferably, the younger man; Long Feng still was, after all, very thin in frame. In time, though, with this loot at hand, he could hopefully fatten up a bit, he needed as much. Still, despite having that planned out, part of him didn’t want to take extra weight, but it a necessity. He was already the very reason that this group survived, but he needed to make himself even more important. He needed to have eyes and ears opened and turned to him. The more he provided, the more they would call for him, and thusly the more power he would have over this group. It was all a simple game, but a very dangerous one to play. Because, despite how little she showed it, there was already someone who was not quick to jump when asked. She his her emotions well, but she still couldn’t hide her subtle ticks and twitches. She was probably still cautious, they did after all find him in a prison, that was probably not the most respectable place to be. That being, in time she would get her dues. He did not have to worry about her, at least, not that much. Eventually, she would either abandon her former instincts or vanish. They could all be arranged, all he needed was time.

Looking around, there were a few people waiting for him to begin. They were not a part of the mission, but obviously they heard him speak of it and from their questions and interest, they were indeed curious to hear what his mission called for. These people were indeed loyal to their cause. And judging from their hopeful and primed faces, they would willingly die for their nation’s freedom for their people’s freedom. They were what the Underground needed.

When it became apparent to begin, Long Feng started in the typical courteous way, “Good evening, to all of you. Now, the mission at hand will be most important in shaping the growth of our establishment. Our target is not some man or woman, but rather a prize. The most accurate map of the entire city, one that will serve us in the coming months ahead, and a more immediate reward over two hundred pounds of gold pieces.” There were murmurs and gasps at the exuberant description; he let the shock soak in for a second before rallying their attention, “Please, please. The money will help keep up alive, as well as to furnish any and all expenses this group will incur. Now, for the mission, our leader, Suki, and our young earthbender, Joychi, will accompany me to the Upper Ring. Once there, we will make our way to the palace, and then to my former study. There, we will get what we came for, and then return.” With that he glanced at Suki and then at Joychi, “Guards are stretched to a minimum, barely able to handle the surveillance they were given. I will give you two instructions on how to enter once we get there. Now, the actual journey to the Upper Ring will require the sliding technique that I taught you, Joychi. Hopefully, by now, you can slide as well as you walk; Suki, you will ride on Joychi’s back while we make our way to the Upper Ring via the monorail rail.”

“Thanks to Yu, we have eight burlap bags which will aid us in getting the gold out of the palace. After that, there shouldn’t be any problems in transporting it all the way down here. Now, do either of you have any questions, because we leave tonight?”

After the bit of an exploit he achieved the night before, Joychi didn't even sleep longer than usual, despite being tired to the point of collapsing right after being done. He woke up at the same time as the others, and followed them to get some grub - much needed food actually, since he was planning on continuing his practice for all morning. It really was untasty, but at least it was some very stomach-filling breakfast he just had. The young man made sure to do it quickly, though, since he didn't want to waste anytime for this training. He came back to the headquarters very quickly, sparing a bit of time to find his polearm and uniform, before proceeding with the plan.

The first thing he did was redo all he'd learned but with his weapon in hand. Even though Long Feng had told him that he'd be sent on missions that required him not to be carrying it, Joychi still like to have it with him whenever possible. It was pretty easy to adapt to the lack of comfort from having to hold his weapon while sliding, and it almost made it easier to handle the balance problem while doing it on the wall, although it did nothing for the trail he left. Sliding down and clinging to the surface was just as easy as before, but climbing posed a bit of a problem. Sticking his weapon in the wall to help scaling only produced irregularities with the wall, making one of his feet lose grasp. Fortunately, he managed to make it easier by magnetizing his polearm to his body while climbing - though the element of stealth he'd worked so hard to gain last night was now compromised.

The problem remained the same when he slid across the wall: he couldn't handle the strain of gravity correctly, even though using his weapon helped him keep his balance, allowing him to hold for a few seconds longer. This gravity problem would require more time to figure out. Probably even the former Secretariat's help, since he probably knew how to do this correctly.

Anyway, once his training was done, Joychi went back inside and began a session of meditation. This time, he probably wouldn't be interrupted, since it was about noon. Everyone was always busy around that time, although he wouldn't mind being needed at the moment. It only sat well with him to meditate now, because it gave him the opportunity to reflect on how to handle the tasks at hand - namely teaching the other Earthbenders in the arts he'd just learnt a while ago. He was having doubts, since they didn't look like they would be able to manage. The Lieutenant had been able to do as Long Feng instructed thanks to the bit of knowledge he possessed, about the basis for these moves. But he guessed that most of them only used Earthending for fighting or daily things... Although he had to admit they managed to hold their own against the Dai-Li. This was probably not a lost cause.

When Long Feng came back, dressed as a Dai-Li much to everybody's surprise, the dark-skinned bender was down in the basement, doing upside down crunches with his feet stuck to the ceiling via earthen shoes. While meditating, he'd figured that the best way to handle this gravity problem was simply to strengthen his own legs... or at least increase their resistance to prolonged strain. Doing this only for this short while wouldn't do miracles, but at least it was a start.

He was forced to postpone the rest of this training, though, since Long Feng called for him. The young man could already guess that it was about a mission, but he made sure to keep his thoughts for himself while walking up the stairs and towards the table the man was at. There seemed to already be people around to hear what would be said - though Joychi took immediate notice of the fact that Long Feng was dressed as an agent. He took his seat, trying to hide the fact he was panting a little, and began listening carefully, only thinking about the words his teacher was saying, and taking care not to forget them.

This plan seemed to be extremely lucrative, as they would gain a large amount of money, as well as so much needed tactical documentation. The only thing bothering the Lieutenant was that there was a high chance it would fail. And that high chance lied only on his own incompetence, as he was worried he wouldn't be able to carry out his task while carrying someone on his back. Plus it was exactly the kind of mission where he wouldn't get to bring his polearm - which would come in handy if they did get detected, or something turned out bad for them.

Either way, he didn't let his concern show. His face remained serious as before, and he simply kept listening. His green gaze went on Suki for a moment, judging she probably wasn't too heavy. Carrying her weight plus the money however... Nevermind that, he'd figure out a way. Long Feng then asked if they had any questions. Trying to be witty, Joychi only asked one. "We don't get the privilege of the outfit, I suppose ?" The answer was pretty obvious in his mind, but he was planning on restyling his uniform for stealthy purposes later - it didn't offer as much protection as the Royal Guards' armor, but is was still a bit too much for the use he'd make of it.

((Hopefully Ai Lin won’t mind if we just get through this in a few posts. I mean, Yulan really can’t have any fun while this plays out so it would do us all good to get this mission done and over with as soon as possible :)))

Lower Ring – Underground HQ

The first to ask the question was the earthbender. It was quite alright because his question sounded a bit more like a joke. Perhaps, it was not in bad taste, there was some tension in the room from the sheer fact that they would go back to the ring that they barely made it out of alive. The couple of chuckles and smirks plastered on dirty faces served well to alleviate the stress that was probably plaguing the two required assistance in the mission.

With a smile on his thin face, Long Feng jovially replied back, “Ha ha, of course. Not now, but later. Obviously, in due time the proper funds will be in our possession, and henceforth we will all receive something better than what we currently wear.” Still smiling Long Feng turned to the other faces in crowd. Of course, they were all desperate for this to come up golden. When the loot found itself in their possession, they would no longer have to squabble over the horrible soup kitchen meals, and the horrendous filth and grime that was on just about everyone’s body. Oh, there would be sweet relief from this filth in due time. The young leader hadn’t asked anything, turning his emerald gaze upon her delicate face, he doubted that any reservations clouded those blue eyes. Out of the three of them, she was probably the best suited for sneaking around; she had, after all, made it into the prison and to his cell without being noticed. Hopefully, that same determination and ambitions would show itself here.

“Alright,” began Long Feng as he looked outside through the dank and rotten, open window. The sky was a deep, dark blue. The orange that had filled it jut before their briefing was near absent, it was time to start. Like his previous mission, they had a time limit here, hopefully, there wouldn’t be any problems. Standing to his feet, Long Feng placed the li that sat in the center of the table upon his head, as he adjusted it to shadow his face, much like an ordinary agent would, he continued speaking, “We should get started right away. Suki, Lieutenant Joychi, if you would please follow me out.”

When he reached the door, he motioned for the two to wait a bit before they parted ways, “While not completely dark, the darkness that we so desperately need will come by the time we reach the monorail station. I regret to inform you two that I cannot accompany you to the monorail station, for obvious reasons. But rest assured that I will not abandon you. You two are to head for the station that we arrived at when we left the Upper Ring. Judging from the people still walking about, I imagine that curfew comes into effect when it is completely dark, as such, you will have to wait around in some alleyway, near the station before we can continue the mission. Now, in this uniform, the majority of the Fire Nation patrols will let me do as I please. I will wait for you atop the monorail station’s stairway. I will wait there a few minutes after nightfall, and then I will proceed to a rail support pillar far from the station. Joychi, you are then to carry Suki, and those bags up to the top of the pillar and onto the monorail rail. From there, we’ll head for the Upper Ring. Afterwards, we will discuss the rest of the mission once we arrive at the Upper Ring.”

Having finished the instructions, Long Feng turned around and headed out into the alleyway. He could not leave this decrepit building from the front door. No. Instead, he took the alleyway, and from there he got onto the main road and quickly paced himself to the station. Along the way, he noted how people were busy racing around the city. That was expected, this was probably the last hour that every civilian was given free reign to get to where they wanted to get to, and buy what ever else was needed for the evening meal and morning breakfast. With a glimmer in his emerald eyes, hidden under the li, the former secretariat could not help, but feel proud of his plan. Surely, none other could hatch such a marvelous plan in such a short period.

With ease, from years of climbing the great palace stairway, the pseudo Dai Li agent made his way up the stairs and past two Fire Nation sentries that were there for no other reason than to show who now ran the city. Surely, their presence could have been more useful in another location. No mater, the girl and the man were just supposed to spot him up there. Looking eastward, a support pillar caught the man’s eye, and with a smile hidden under his mask he waited a few more minutes before he made his way over to the structure.

When the last monorail left the station, and when the guards’ attention was diverted outside, the man slyly stepped down and onto the rail. Easily, he assumed the proper position and then jetted off. His pace was slow; he had to make sure that either Joychi of Suki saw his slim form.

After a few moments of travel, he came to a stop, and thusly awaited his fellow Underground members. Hopefully, they saw him, otherwise, this was all for waste.

(OOC: Thanks, Yulan! And of course I don't mind moving this along, Shio. That said, this first part is a wrap up of Suki and Yulan's first training session and then the rest will be up to date with you guys. Again, sorry for the slight godmodding, Yulan.)

Lower Ring - Underground HQ

The young warrior paused. Her mind flashed for an instant, trying to remember the last time she had been referred to as "Sifu" and then a flipbook of her battles playing one after another to the recent riot. Kyoshi Warriors were taught that death sometimes could not be avoided. Those who had trespassed without sound reason were fed to the Unagi, after all. It wasn't what Suki would refer to as the final strike or the death blow...and it actually never came up while she was leader of the Warriors. It had been used as a threat that had never been acted upon. There was the banished prince's assault on Kyoshi Island to get Aang...had she ended any of those soldiers' lives? Suki didn't think she had. Most of the memory of that fight was blurred in golden fire, her home set ablaze by the angry young man and his men, and the bittersweet warmth of Sokka's cheek as she kissed him goodbye.

Suki pursed her lips, her blue eyes darting skyward as she tried to remember the battles that had happened since. Kyoshi Warriors were given a specific philosophy to follow, one that was handed down through the ages and originated by the Avatar that essentially kept them save from tyranny. It made sense to her; it was what she had been brought up with. But Yulan? The girl wielded a wooden sword. It was all you needed to know about how she felt about the "killing blow." Not to say that Yulan was wrong...no, there was nothing wrong about wanting to preserve life, even your enemy's. It was just...

Kyoshi did whatever it took to protect her people. That is what we do. Our enemies don't give us mercy. They certainly didn't show any to Aang...

That wasn't the matter at hand, though. The fact of the matter was that no matter how many pretty words Suki wrapped around the concept, she had yet to be sure that what she had done had ended the life of another. In the heat of battle, Suki fell back on the years of her training, letting body memory and movement override higher thought. Sentences that came were short and spouted more like orders; followed more like instincts. When she asked herself the question, trying to feel for complete honesty, Suki believed she had landed that final strike once but was ashamed that it was not a memory etched into her mind with any clarity. Weren't soldiers meant to remember those things in vivid detail? Did battle go in slow motion to them, each movement an eternity and watching the life leave the eyes of their enemy a burned image in their mind?

"I...I'm pretty sure that I have, especially after the prison riot," Suki finally said, sighing and looking back at Yulan. "But fights, for me at least, have always gone quickly. I don't have any story about the first person I...um...ended. Maybe if I did this would be easier. As Kyoshi Warriors, we are taught to defend our home and that sometimes...death is unavoidable. Do not go looking to cause the death of your enemy, but if it is a fight to the death...it's best not to hold back. And I don't think the Fire Nation shows much mercy to their enemies."

She clapped her hands together and forced a smile, hoping it looked more natural than it felt. "Okay, let's continue."

Yulan did have a natural aptitude for Kyoshi Warrior training, but Suki wasn't sure if the philosophy that came with it would be one she would be able to live with. Anything Yulan could take from this training would be worth it to herself and the Underground, though, and that made it worth it. For teenager's sake, Suki attempted to steer the rest of the training that afternoon to techniques meant to cause unconsciousness and disable rather than kill. There were more than enough to go over, anyway. She concentrated the most on combining Yulan's knack for redirecting energy with closed fan techniques. They tended to run on the less lethal side, and would be the easiest to adapt to Yulan's sword training.

Hours passed before Suki thought that it would be time to call it a day. After all, there was such a thing as an overload of information and she didn't want to make the girl's head explode. There would be plenty to go over in time. And there was always so much to do.

The Next Evening

It was a daring plan, that much was for sure. But, really, was it any crazier than their prison break plan? An accurate map and proper funds was just too good of a prospect to pass up, and Long Feng had already put his life on the line to prepare for it. This was part of what he was here for, after all.

"Right," she said. When Long Feng was finished explaining the plan, she followed him to the door and listened to the rest of his instructions before he turned and disappeared into the alley. He had to take the less obvious exit from the building, but that wouldn't be an issue for them...at least until they got near to the monorail station.

Using the monorail as a method of entering the Upper Ring...it had been possible on her own while the Earth Kingdom had been in charge. As far as Suki was concerned, a few extra guards and a change in their element of choice would make little difference for her. The ways of silence and stealth were part of what it meant to be a Kyoshi Warrior and if she could manage such a feat on her own before, surely she'd be able to do it again with the help of Long Feng and Joychi.

"Let's make our way there then."

Golden fingertips slipped away over the violet blanket of twilight that gave way to the deep blue of night. People that made their way through the streets as the two walked to the monorail station all had the same downtrodden and tired looks. A few had the hard thin lines and wide frame of what Suki imagined were bounty hunters. Many of them milled around the taverns in the Lower Ring; she had seen several back when they had been recruiting for the Underground. They were the only ones who held no tiredness in their eyes, nor fear of the dark or the guards patrolling about.

When the monorail station was in sight, the Kyoshi Warrior signaled to Joychi to turn down the alleyway near by. It reeked of garbage and refuse, but it had a good enough viewpoint of the station. From there, they would be able to see the last train leave and move from there.

Except that they ran the chance of running into guard patrols if they didn't get a better view point. All they would see from there is one side. Maybe this wasn't as good a vantage point as she thought.

"I'm going to get a better look," Suki announced. She took a deep breath through her mouth, though it did little to remove the smell of rotten fruit the alley reeked of, and leaped on top of barrels stacked along the stone building's back wall. She used the momentum to run two steps up the back wall, pushing off at the last step and leaping to low tiled roof of the building across the alley. Suki flattened herself against the roof and felt a warm breeze ruffle through her short hair. This view point was a bit better than the alley itself; the monorail station was desolate and lonely drenched in its eerie green light. They would probably change it to red soon enough, the Fire Nation was egotistical that way.

The patrols were thinned out now that the station was closed...just one on either staircase entrance, standing at attention at the bottom where it met the road. It would be easy enough to avoid that and make it into the station. The big columns there the last time had helped in hiding her, odds were they'd be helpful again.

Poking her head over the edge of the roof, she whispered down to Joychi, "I think we're clear. We can move out now."

Lower Ring

The ambitious runaway smiled, rivaling the sun as the brightest thing known to man. She had almost forgot about the urgency behind her needing to leave the city before someone came looking for her. Now, she was all too much wrapped up in the magic surrounding her departure: Ba Sing Se was a prison, she was the damsel in distress, and Tenshio was her knight in shining armor (or in this, a parka) who had come to save her.

It was all very magical, to say the least. She had just met him mere hours ago and here she was, now, entrusting her life in his hands. Her mind didn't trouble her with dozens of thoughts right now. It granted her a grace period, knowing that she desperately needed to get out of the city or she would be forever stifled. It did send one thought to her, though - speak. Now.

"Yes, Tenshio, we can go now. Whatever lies beyond the walls of Ba Sing Se awaits us." She would walk over to him, wanting to be closer to him when he decided to lead the way out of the bizarre. The last thing Kong wanted was to get lost again.

Lower Ring - Underground HQ

Joychi had misunderstood a bit of what the mission was. He didn't think they'd be leaving before the darkness. Since the sky was still pretty clear, and would most likely provide little of the cover they would have had with the sun already set, he thought they would wait for this to actually happen before proceeding. But Long Feng seemed to know what he was doing. So the young man simply stood up and followed him and Suki.

He stopped before the door, as he was motioned to, and listened to the details of their trip to the Upper Ring. Now Joychi understood why they were going right now, to avoid the Fire Nation patrols, and "blend". The Lieutenant's role was rather easy in all this, although he was afraid he would fail in some spectacular fashion and ruin the whole mission at one point. Carrying Suki AND the bags while remaining stealthy... that sounded doable. What concerned him was the part where they got to the Upper Ring.

Figuring he'd be too noticeable with his complete uniform on, the young man simply tore the sleeves and legs off his uniform, for the ease of movement. Then he took the bags and put them on his shoulders. Now he was pretty sure he looked like some kind of delivery guy. "I'm all set." He told Suki while putting on his own hat. With that, they made their way outside.

There were still quite a lot of people roaming about. The fact that they weren't seeing any patrol on the way indicated that Long Feng had guessed right. Of course, it wasn't time to rejoice just yet, as they still had some walk to do before they got close enough to the station, which means they were getting closer to the Fire Nation. The sky was already turning darker, they'd have to hurry - and not miss Long Feng's shadow atop the monorail, otherwise they were done for, as was the plan.

Suki suddenly motioned to hide in an alleyway, which the Lieutenant did immediately. He was more inclined to listen to her at the moment, not only because she was the one who created the whole operation that was the Underground, but also because she was the one most disposed to make decisions out of the two. He was here to transport and protect. That much he'd carved into his brain. He dropped the bags as lightly as possible, doing his best to ignore the... unpleasant scent of this place, as well as its looks. It was real bad luck that the girl had decided to hide in here, of all places, but at least it would make enemies hesitant to search for them here.

Then Suki said she would get a better look. By the time the bags were on the ground, she had disappeared from the bender's sight. With one look up, he realized that she was climbing on top of the roof. Although she did look really talented in what she was doing, Joychi hoped that she wouldn't hurt herself while doing this. He was not very competent in the art of healing someone - he was actually very bad - and he had the feeling things would go badly if any of them was wounded. Still, she was the one in the best condition to look out.

Before he had time to realize, the night had fallen. Joychi was leaning against the wall with his arms crossed, trying to trust his ears more than his eyes to stand guard. From what he'd seen, there was not too much distance left between them and the station, and it would only take about one minute to reach the tracks while sliding. That was just enough time for them to avoid being spotted by any lucky Fire Nation eye. 'My time to act is coming, then.' He thought while crouching to make rock gloves from the ground.

He heard Suki's signal up there, telling him that they were clear to move. But suddenly, he heard footsteps coming this way, from the path they had used to get over here. Going over rooftops would be pretty risky if any actual agent was around. The Lieutenant would have been fine with walking, if only there hadn't been this patrol approaching. "Drop from the roof and on my back ! We've gotta hustle !" He said while putting the bags over his shoulders, and rubbing the ground with his feet to create earthen soles.

As soon as he felt her weight hung on his back, Joychi swung his right arm backwards and began sliding forward. The sharp turn when exiting this alleyway kind of gave him goosebumps, since he had not practiced steering a lot, but he managed to do it by shifting his stance. Once he reached clear sight of the station, Joychi slowed down the pace, in order to be able to spot Long Feng at some point on top of the railing. Eventually, he noticed a shadowy figure atop one of the pillars, and decided it was him - doubting there were many shadowy figures on top of the monorail railings at night just as they were looking for one.

"Hold the bags for me, please. But don't lose your grip on me." The Earthbender told Suki, slowly letting go of the bags that were on his shoulders, as to not alter his course of sliding on the ground. The pillar was getting very close, and he'd need both hands to climb up the rocky surface. There was a bit of concern in his mind as he neared it. Concern about whether he'd succeed, now that he was carrying Suki on his back, thus having extra weight. She wasn't very hard to carry, but- No, now was not the time to doubt himself. He leapt off the ground, then stuck his fingertips and toes to the wall.

...It was a success ! No noise, no cracks, no shaking... They were good to go ! Just like a spider - or an agent - the Lieutenant began scaling that thick pillar. It was less hard than he thought, although just a little bit stressful since he was doing it for a mission, and the pillar was taller than the wall. However, Joychi was too busy focusing on the task at hand to even begin worrying about failure, now that he was actually doing something. As a matter of fact, doing it for real made him feel like he was climbing faster than before, and with more ease. So, when they reached the top and noticed the fake agent waiting for them, he felt a bit proud. The Lieutenant smirked while pushing himself and the Kyoshi Warrior up, then tilted his hat downward a bit, meaning "We're ready when you are.". This overall part had been less exhausting than he thought...

((Excellent, and don’t worry Yulan, we shouldn’t take too long))

Lower Ring

When the familiar shapes of his two companions came up from under the rail, the former grand secretariat quickly set about preparing them for the rest. He looked to the large wall, the border between abject poverty and reasonable prosperity. Mentally, he remembered what it took to make the trip to the Upper Ring, it wasn’t too demanding, but he had some doubts as to whether or not the young lieutenant could make the trip over. If their luck still held firm, the man’s youth and vitality would suffice and carry him where skill was required. Oh, well, this was not the best time to worry about that possible outcome. No, no, they had far more important matters to attend to.

“Now, if you would please hand those bags over,” asked Long Feng with a most gracious, outstretched hand. When, at last, he felt the familiar weight, and rough texture, he swung the bags onto his supple frame in a way that would not pose any trouble during the journey. “It is a long journey,” and with that, he turned around, assumed the proper stance, and then took off.

Years of practice and use gave the former man-in-charge amazing control. He literally could change his trajectory on a dime. There were serious doubts in his mind that his associate could do the same or that any of the earthbenders that he would teach could ever do the same. Sure, at some point there would be a person with natural skill at this, but such a person would never have the control that Long Feng had.

Upper Ring

Past the gorgeous vistas of the more opulent rings, the trio was lead up and into the Grand Monorail Station of the Upper Ring. Lavished in decorum, fit only for nobles, and lit up in a foreign way; the station was a far cry from the ones that were almost copy and pasted around the city. Then again, that was expected, this station was the one that the Earth Kings always used whenever they left the Upper Ring. But, after decades of their former king’s idleness, the nobles finally got their hands on refurbishing it, under his directive of course, and now with a new ruler, they set about red-washing it. How predictable.

Still, despite the lavishness of the station, Long Feng pressed further still. He turned his head around, and got a slight glance at his two fellow patriots. They were still following him, that was good. Just like his former journey here, they would disembark the railings on a pillar just a ways away, near the Hua estate.

After a few more minutes of travel, Long Feng came to a stop, and then stepped onto the elevated perimeter of the rail; he then turned around, hopped down, and slowed his decent by sliding down against the stone pillar. When his rock shoes touched the ground, he waited for his leader and military man. Upon their arrival, he began debriefing, while they hopefully stretched and prepared themselves for the sleuthing ahead.

“Now, despite any prior telling, I must inform the two of you that this is far from over. We still have to get our prizes, and then drag them all the way back to the compound before the sun rises. First, we head in that direction, Suki you’ll have to ride on Joychi’s back, like before, and then when we reach the wall to the palace we split up. I’ll go in the traditional way, seeing as how this outfit ensures me that prospect, you two will have to scale the palace’s outer wall. There are guards lining the wall, but there are far too few, you shouldn’t have any trouble climbing, getting over and coming back down without being spotted; considering what new skills you should now know, Joychi.”

“Next, make your way to the palace and up the central stairway to the top. I will be waiting for you there. Do not be alarmed, the palace was empty at this hour, as I recall. From there, I will enter first, and then walk past the guards. I will signal for their, and hopefully you two will be watching my entrance and when the opportunity comes you won’t hesitate to take out the guards. From there, we make our way to my study, reclaim our prize and then head out. I’ll explain the rest when we have the gold.”

Like before, when he finished his directives, he turned around and then headed for the palace’s wall. At that moment, the previous journey’s memory was fresh in his head, and thusly, he did as he had done before, and made his way past the guards. Then, he slid the rest of the way to the palace’s stairway, climbed it, and then waited for his companions.

Kong’s response was formal—as Tenshio had come to expect from the girl—but was also satisfactory. The Waterbender noticed that the Earthbender moved close to him after speaking, but did not pass him. Did she expect him to lead them both out of the city? The sky-eyed male wasn’t entirely comfortable with that idea. After all, he had only been in Ba Sing Se two days, and hadn’t done any navigating during that time. How would he fare now?

Though they were important, Tenshio didn’t voice his doubts to his companion. The young man wasn’t by nature a proud person, but Kong didn’t need to know about his lack of self-confidence just yet. That he could save for a later conversation. For now he would just try his best to successfully make it out of the city. So, nodding his head, Tenshio began to walk, looking back to make sure Kong was following him.

Within twenty minutes, the Waterbender was hopelessly lost. It felt as though they had been going in circles, which they probably had. He stopped and smiled sheepishly at the girl next to him. ”I’m sorry, but…I’m completely lost. This city is just too big. If I could find some sort of landmark, I could get us out of here, but…” Tenshio trailed off with a sigh. The beginning of an exciting journey, and he had already messed up. Great.

Lower Ring

Kong looked at the icy-hued eyes of her companion as he looked around, perhaps searching for the best route of the city. Yes, that was it. Her fearless leader was going to lead her promptly to the giant wall, and then from there the both of them would be free to travel to whatever faraway place they wished to see. In her mind, Shi Yang had the entire thing planned out. It would take all of five minutes.

But was she expecting two much of the tribesman? He was new to the city, and she knew it better than he did. Why would she leave it to him to lead the way out of the city? Self-consciously, Kong was allowing herself "to be saved" by Tenshio.

As they roamed through crowded avenues aimlessly - well not really aimlessly, because they were looking for a way out - the young Earthbender soon found out that her hopes had been set too high. Was Tenshio looking for one final store to purchase one last necessity for the voyage? The subtle confession proved that idea wrong; he was just lost. If he didn't know the way out then why would he pretend as though he did? Time had been wasted, as Kong could not help but be reminded of the short window of opportunity that she was working with in the situation.

But she was not mad. How could the sixteen year old be? It was her own fault, on both occasions. With a smile she proclaimed, "It is ok, Tenshio. All that we must do is make it to the great wall of Ba Sing Se. That is the way to exit the city." A final nod would prove she was through speaking, for now. Being the male, she allowed him to once again lead the duo.
