"We'll be very busy on the Solstice, love," Hyuk-jae said. "Remember?" Glancing at Nagisa, he held out a hand for his teacup. "Here." Nima's cup looked a little low, too. Hyuk-jae offered the large woman more tea, too.

Nagisa gave him a look that was both grateful and terrified, if such a thing was possible. He could already see Nima visibly bristle at both the endearment and Hyuk-jae offering to refill her tea cup.

"I can do it myself," she snapped, grabbing the teapot out of Hyuk-jae's hands. Nagisa winced, fully expecting the teapot to crash violently to the floor and spill tea everywhere; luckily, it didn't.

For the rest of the hour, Nima tried to (not-so-)subtly get Nagisa to tell her what his plans were. Nagisa played stupid. When Nima mentioned how lonely solstice would be, he reminded her of her "big party"; when she bemoaned about how she never got to see him, Nagisa said they were seeing each other right now; when she complained that all he ever did was work, he said that he had to pay his bills somehow.

Finally, Nima pressed him about exchanging gifts; seeing no way around it without very obviously communicating his dislike for her terrible taste in everything, Nagisa agreed. The portly lady seemed overjoyed, gushing about how she would find the perfect gift for him, and saying she hoped he remembered their past conversations so he could get her a gift she would enjoy as well. Nagisa nodded and agreed enthusiastically, but felt trapped inside; he had no recollection of what Nima did and did not like. He made a mental note to ask Hyuk-jae for help with ideas. Of course, he'd have to get something for Soon Hee as well, they were both his clients after all, even if he shared them now with Hyuk-jae.

Nima departed in high spirits, her quiet friend in tow. Nagisa sighed audibly once she was out of the main hall and the door shut firmly behind her. "Jeepers," he said, feeling exhausted. "What is her problem? She's never acted like this before, and she seems to be getting worse each time I see her. He flagged down a server and requested more black sesame seed bars. Grinning at Hyuk-jae, he touched his face. "If this keeps up I'll get wrinkles much too soon," he joked, making light of the situation.

Almost instantly, though, he sobered up again. "Seriously," he muttered, accepting the plate of snacks gratefully. "I really wish I knew what was going on with her. And what I should get her for solstice."

Murmuring an apology as Nima snapped about pouring her tea herself, Hyuk-jae let her have the teapot. He traded glances with Soon Hee, who said nothing. Sorry to see Soon Hee go, he promised to see her next time but avoided saying anything to Nima. She hated him because he was Nagisa's boyfriend, right? That's what it looked like to Hyuk-jae.

"Seriously, I really wish I knew what was going on with her. And what I should get her for solstice."

"Don't you think she's a little too attached to you?" said Hyuk-jae. He glanced at Nagisa. "She is really overbearing. Soon Hee says she's never really seen her like that before." The quiet, shy woman had seemed a bit shocked by her friend's behavior. Hyuk-jae worried over Nima and her possessiveness for the rest of the night, even when some of Lee's friends came by. The gangsters were quite different from their other clients, preferring to play a fun game of cards or just chat quietly. They didn't require flirtation, which was just as well. Hyuk-jae was exhausted with it.

He worried, once home, over Solstice. What should he get Nagisa? He didn't have the foggiest idea. Not a book, of course. After a week of thinking, he ended up purchasing some wine-colored yarn at a store. Learning how to crochet from a second-hand book, the Firebender spent quiet mornings at home working carefully on a scarf for his boyfriend. Nagisa looked good in that kind of color. He'd like it, right?

It was slow going. Hyuk-jae had to start over once, but it was worth it. In the end he'd made a long, thick burgundy scarf. The yarn was soft and lush, and hopefully really warm. The Firebender wrapped it up carefully, hand-painting a design on the paper. He'd decided to give it to Nagisa at the work-related Solstice party, rather than at his parents'. Hyuk-jae wanted the young man to enjoy his time at home and felt that they'd have a better moment at work…

Plus, it meant that he could be as affectionate as he liked without worrying about offending his boyfriend's parents.

Arriving early to the party, which was held a good week before Solstice, Hyuk-jae nervously tugged on his shirt collar. He hadn't gotten anyone else a gift. That wouldn't be a problem, would it? None of their clients indicated they expected gifts from him. Nagisa had an obligation to Nima, but that was all. Nima wouldn't want a gift from him, of course.

The Firebender had dressed as festively as possible, wearing more color than usual. A silvery-grey necktie complimented his royal blue sweater and he even borrowed a liiiiiiiiiitle smidge of silver eye pigment from one of the girls, making his orange eyes more luminous than usual. One of their co-workers commented on it and he laughed, feeling embarrassed. Where was Nagisa? Why was he late? Hyuk-jae had to go sit out at their table without him, nervously holding the present in his lap.

"Too attached?" Nagisa repeated blankly. "Sometimes, maybe, but it's just work."

And he didn't think any more of it for the rest of the night. Some of Hyuk-jae's acquaintances stopped by, giving them both a chance to relax their act and just enjoy socialising. Nagisa wasn't very good at cards, but that didn't seem to matter to anyone. He made a mental note to ask Hyuk-jae about the visitors. They seemed like ... well, their clothes seemed to indicate they were part of a gang or a triad, but they seemed nice enough despite it.

Coming home was nice. Not that he particularly wanted to leave work; Nima aside, he enjoyed his job, with the plus side of getting to spend time with Hyuk-jae. Still, it was nice to come home every so often and unwind.

While taking a bubble bath, he thought about what he should get Hyuk-jae and his parents for solstice. Hand-made cards were a given, but the individual gifts were a little harder. The bubbles were all gone by the time he figured out what to get his parents, but he still hadn't thought of a gift for Hyuk-jae. He decided to play it by ear and go shopping with an open mind to see if anything particularly jumped out at him.

By the time the Club's solstice party rolled around — about a week before solstice actually occurred, so that the hosts and hostesses could spend time with their families on the occasion — Nagisa had picked what he felt was the perfect gift for Hyuk-jae. He had also picked a gift for Nima, a last-minute after thought that he wasn't even sure she'd like. He added a hand-made card as well.

He was late. Arriving breathlessly at the hosting hall bearing two boxes, he slid onto the sofa next to Hyuk-jae. "Nice outfit!" he said brightly, seeing with pleasure that his boyfriend dressed festively. "Sorry I'm late," he apologised. "I couldn't settle on an outfit." What he eventually had settled on were a pair of forest-green tweed slacks, red suspenders, a white button-up shirt, and a red waistcoat with small white snowflakes and a little snow person embroidered into the fabric. The snow person, much to Nagisa's amusement, was wearing a black tophat. Excitedly, he also showed Hyuk-jae his socks: red-and-white stripes, looking like the peppermint candies that were passed around during this time of year.

Unsurprisingly, the first clients of the night were Nima and Soon Hee. The latter arrived in a clearly solstice-themed but sedate outfit of light blue and white. Nima, on the other hand, was... outright gaudy. She had on a glittery, sparkling sweater with sequins AND glitter, bright tinsel all over the front in a tree pattern, ribbons of gold, red and green, and literal baubles and stockings pinned to the front and sleeves. The cuffs of her sleeves had miniature sleigh bells sewn on, and they jingled loudly as she walked, carrying an enormous package poorly wrapped in the shiniest, gaudiest wrapping paper Nagisa had ever seen in his life.

He smiled at her, like it was his job to do. "Happy solstice!" he said as cheerily as possible. Nima immediately sat next to him, pushing her way between him and Hyuk-jae with her bulk.

She set the box on the floor in front of Nagisa. "And did you get a gift for me, Shouta?" she said coyly. Nagisa plastered a grin on his face. "I did!" He handed her a small, festively wrapped box with his homemade card taped to the top. Nima's eyes lit up.

The card itself was drawn with crayon, glitter glued to the front to read "Happy Solstice!" Inside was a very generic, Thank you for coming to see me, may the spirits bless you this upcoming year. Nima was ecstatic.

"You made this for me?" she asked, her voice cracking as she enveloped Nagisa in a large-bosomed hug. Nagisa didn't have the heart to tell her that he always hand-made his cards. Nima unwrapped her package carefully; inside was a ceramic mug, with the script "To Nima, From Shouta" written on it in writing that obviously (at least, to those who knew him) did not belong to Nagisa.

But Nima didn't know. "I'll treasure this always," she murmured, giving him another hug. Nagisa smiled politely. "I'm glad you like it."

"Now open mine!" Nima prodded.

Nagisa obediently unwrapped his present. Inside was, shockingly, a small stone statue of a naked chubby boy in a dancing pose. His jaw dropped. What in the blazes was this?

"Isn't it wonderful?" Nima asked happily, mistaking his expression as one of pleased surprise. "I saw it at the store and immediately thought of you."

Why on earth did you think that? Nagisa wanted to ask. Instead, he closed his mouth and turned to face Nima, giving her a very brief hug. "Thank you. It's very unique."

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw something in Hyuk-jae's hands; a package wrapped in brown paper, with what looked like handmade red print, and a red bow. By the bow was a small tag that said, with love.

"Is that... is that for me?" Hyuk-jae nodded shyly at him, blushing. Nagisa reached over and took the package, carefully unwrapping it.

Inside was a beautiful knitted scarf, with the softest burgandy yarn he'd ever felt. "This is for me?" he asked again, marvelling. He lifted up the scarf, rubbing it against his cheek. "This is amazing, did you make this?" He immediately wrapped the scarf around his neck, nuzzling his face against the material.

"I got something for you, too." He gave Hyuk-jae a thin package with a small lump on the top, wrapped in white and gold paper.

Nagisa didn't notice Nima's eyes flash with annoyance.

Hyuk-jae smiled at Nagisa as he breezed into the room, late. He found the younger man's outfit a bit outlandish, but it was certainly festive. "You look, um… cheerful," he said. "Very… solstice-y!" His hands tightened on his gift. He wanted to give it before their clients came, but since Nagisa had run so late… there wasn't time.

Nima and Soon Hee breezed in first. Hyuk-jae was delighted to see that he and Soon Hee matched, and pointed it out immediately.
"Snow!" he said, pouring her a cup of tea. "We thought alike."
She smiled, commenting on his necktie and taking the cup of tea happily. Hyuk-jae had no such nice words for Nima's … outfit. If he could call it that.

It was outrageous. The thing was even noisy! It grated on his nerves every time the large woman moved. Soon Hee seemed to note his reaction and hid a smile behind one hand. Of course, Nima took the seat between the two young men, forcing Hyuk-jae to scoot over and basically give up his seat entirely.

He and Soon Hee chatted easily while Nima opened Nagisa's gift. Neither of them had gotten anything for the other, and both seemed happy with that. Hyuk-jae asked how the new pet was going and Soon Hee started telling him all about it —

But Nagisa unwrapping Nima's present halted their conversation. Inside was, shockingly, a small stone statue of a naked chubby boy in a dancing pose. It was hideous. Hyuk-jae gaped at the thing, in shock. Who even made such a thing? Why would Nima buy it? It was — it was horrible!! Soon Hee stared as well, at a loss. Both of them exchanged glances and quickly hid in their teacups.

Nagisa managed to say something complimentary. That was, in Hyuk-jae's estimation, a miracle. Unfortunately, his boyfriend took that very inopportune moment to notice the gift he had beside him.
"Is that... is that for me?"

Oh, no! He didn't want to give it in front of them! But now that he'd pointed it out… Hyuk-jae flushed, handing over the package. He squirmed in his seat while Nagisa unwrapped it. The scarf was nothing special, not really. It had a few uneven stitches here and there, in fact. When Nagisa asked if he made it himself, he nodded shyly.
"I thought it would match a lot of your things," Hyuk-jae murmured.

Soon Hee smiled at him, saying how nice it was for him to go to such effort. Hyuk-jae accepted Nagisa's gift a moment later, carefully undoing the gold and white paper. It seemed to be a set of stationary for musical notation. Hyuk-jae ran his fingers over the monogrammed pencil set and the sweet, clearly hand-drawn floral design on the front of the spiral-bound book. "Thank you," he said softly, turning it over in his hands. "It's really beautiful…"

Sweet as always, Soon Hee remarked on how nice it must be for them to have each other for the holidays. Hyuk-jae offered her a genuine smile. She was embarking on a tiny bit of office romance herself, and so he leaned in, asking what she'd gotten the man in question. "Something really personal, right?" Hyuk-jae waved the notebook. "Like this?"

Nagisa, still oblivious to Nima's increasingly annoyed expression, beamed. "I'm glad you like it!" he said happily. He hadn't been sure what to get Hyuk-jae, unsure of what sort of things he would like. He knew Hyuk-jae liked simple things — something that they differed on, usually — and he didn't think his boyfriend would appreciate an expensive decorative item from the store with the blue boxes.

So he had settled on the notebook, thinking it'd go with the guitar he'd bought previously, since Hyuk-jae had mentioned writing his own songs. He specifically picked a notebook with a blank front so he could decorate it himself. And what gift of writing paper would be complete without personalised writing tools? It just all fell into place.

Politely, Nagisa held out some warm mincemeat pasties to Nima. "We have pasties today," he said. "They're a bit more savoury than our usual snacks, but we also have peppermint hot chocolate, and peppermint mocha coffee."

The large woman took them without comment, but didn't eat. Nagisa tilted his head cutely, knowing she liked the look. "What's wrong?"

Her chest heaving up and down as she crossed her arms, Nima narrowed her eyes and stared at Hyuk-jae.

"Nima?" Nagisa glanced between the two of them worriedly.

"I don't like you," said woman flatly, addressing Hyuk-jae. Nagisa gaped at her. "Nima!" The woman looked at him with an unfathomable expression. "Well, I don't. Ever since you've been seeing him you've grown distant, you're always with him, never with me."

Soon Hee looked at her friend like she had sprouted another head. Nagisa couldn't help but agree.

"What is the matter?" he asked, feeling his temper rising. "Why are you saying this?"

"Come away with me, Shouta."
"What?!"

Nima wrapped her arms around him and drew him close. "I — I care so much about you. You deserve better than some thin little boy. Can he take care of you like I can? I'd give you everything you wanted, always."

Nagisa struggled out of her grasp. "Nima, no! I can't!" He pushed her away, scooting to the other end of the sofa. Nima looked like she might cry. "Shouta..."

He glared at her with all the fury he could muster. "The host club isn't a dating service," he said scathingly. "We treat everyone here like prince and princesses. Everyone understands that this is for fun, except you!"

"Shouta, how can you say these things to me?"

Soon Hee looked very uncomfortable; Nagisa bit his lip. He had nothing against Soon Hee, but Nima was taking it too far. "This is my work, Nima," he said, reaching over for Hyuk-jae. "And Eunhyuk is my partner. And my boyfriend."

"But what about all the time we spent together, before him?" Nima wailed.

"It was work!"

He laughed. Hyuk-jae knew he shouldn't have, but he couldn't help it. She didn't like him? So freaking what? He didn't like her, either! And so he laughed at Nima, at her complaining about how Nagisa liked him better. Of course he did! Who wouldn't?

Honestly, it was no secret she didn't like him. Everyone knew it.

"Come away with me, Shouta."
"What?!"

That stopped his laughing. "Excuse me?" Was she serious? Surely not. 'Come away with me'? This woman was delusional. He was right — he knew it! Nima had weird, unhealthy feelings for Nagisa.

You deserve better than some thin little boy. Can he take care of you like I can? I'd give you everything you wanted, always."

Some thin little boy? Well, he would admit he could use a few more pounds, but it was Nima's disparaging of how well he could take care of his boyfriend that really set him off. Hyuk-jae worked hard for Nagisa!

"Oh, I can take care of him in ways you can't even imagine, ahjumma," Hyuk-jae snapped, temper rising. He slapped a hand, palm down, on the table. It took a lot to rouse him, truly, and his displeasure with Nima had been building for months. "I'd like to see you try to please a man as well as me. He already gets everything he wants and a lot more, so I think you need to check yourself."

Nagisa had already scooted away, glaring at the woman. He was clearly upset.

"The host club isn't a dating service… Everyone understands that this is for fun, except you!"

Nima wasn't seeming to understand him. She went on about their 'times together', as if those existed outside of time she paid for. This was worse, in all honesty, than Yoshida. Poor Nagisa! Hyuk-jae couldn't imagine what was going on in this woman's mind. He went to Nagisa's side immediately as the fluffy-haired host reached for him, putting himself between Nagisa and Nima. What if she got violent?

Well, he could take a beating better than Nagisa. Any day.

"And Eunhyuk is my partner. And my boyfriend."

Right. "I think you should go," Hyuk-jae said. He glanced at Soon Hee. "You can stay, if you want. I'm sorry for your evening to be ruined this way."

How could this even be happening? It was just a while ago that they got rid of Yoshida for overstepping his bounds, and now Nima was acting up? And during the solstice party, of all times? He watched with supressed glee as Hyuk-jae told Nima off, saying everything he wanted to but didn't know how.

"I think you should go," Hyuk-jae said. He glanced at Soon Hee. "You can stay, if you want. I'm sorry for your evening to be ruined this way."

Nima glared at Hyuk-jae before turning to Nagisa; her expression was pitiful, but all Nagisa felt was disgust. She was at least as old as his mother, if not a few years more. Everyone at the host club knew the rules, knew that this was a club for people with too much money and too much time, so they could waste both being flattered and given feelings of moé. This wasn't a club to find true love. Sometimes it happened, but those were few and far between.

"Shouta," Nima tried again. "I know this is your work, I know! But... please, I think we could really have something."

The fluffy-haired young man stared at her for a few moments, standing closer to Hyuk-jae. "I'm sorry, Nima," he said. "I am ending our arrangement." Nagisa rang a little bell, and Madame Jainukul walked over.

"Is there a problem?" she asked mildly.

Nima turned to the manager, shaking. "Let Shouta leave with me!" she demanded, half in tears. Jainukul regarded her with mild surprise. "Does Shouta want to leave?" she asked.

"No!" Nagisa interrupted. "No, I do not. I'm terminating our arrangement." He glanced over at Soon Hee, trying to smile. "Soon Hee is welcome to stay."

Nima laughed harshly. "Soon Hee can't afford to come here without me!" The woman had a look of triumph on her face. "If you want her, then you can't terminate my membership."

The madame sighed, rubbing the bridge of her nose. "Ma'am, if your host no longer wishes to serve you then you must either find another host or excuse yourself from the club for a time."

The plump woman opened her mouth to speak; Nagisa thought she would raise a fuss, but somehow Nima seemed to deflate. "I could've made you so happy," she told Nagisa sorrowfully. Unable to help himself, Nagisa snorted. Nima looked like he had punched her in the face.

"I am happy," he told her matter-of-factly.

"I know this is your work, I know! But... please, I think we could really have something."

"Seems like you haven't quite figured it out, to me," Hyuk-jae muttered. Nagisa scooted closer to him before telling the woman he was going to end their arrangement and ringing a bell. Soon Hee was already putting on her coat, making absolutely no fuss. Her cheeks were red with embarrassment, and the Firebender felt sorry for her. She'd insisted that Nima wasn't really so bad, but he had a hard time believing her.

As Jainukul arrived, asking if there was a problem, Hyuk-jae could feel everyone in the place staring. At least this time it wasn't at him! The manager's manner was professional and mild, to his relief.

"Let Shouta leave with me!"

The Firebender couldn't help but roll his eyes. 'Let' him leave with her? Hadn't they both been clear enough? Once again Nagisa insisted he wanted Nima to go, and Jainukul informed the portly woman that she had to leave or find another host. Her surprise at the request was evident. Hyuk-jae fumed privately over the woman's bringing Soon Hee into it. She was such a nice lady! If they were friends, why would Nima mention her monetary status like that?

Glancing at Soon Hee, Hyuk-jae shrugged. He had her business card. They could be friends outside of work, right? In fact, it might be so much nicer that way.

"I could've made you so happy."

Please! As if it wasn't enough that Nagisa was not interested in her and very much taken in reality. By a man. This woman thought she could make him happy? She was clearly delusional. As Nagisa said that he was happy, Hyuk-jae grinned and looped an arm around the shorter man, tugging him close. "Thanks for your patronage," he said to Nima. Turning towards Nagisa, he bent the shorter man backward over his arm slightly as he pressed their lips together in a very romantic and open-mouthed kiss.

Well, it didn't hurt anything. They were already billed as a couple, and their own clients hadn't arrived yet. Besides, the point needed to be made. Nagisa was not available, not really. Hyuk-jae didn't care if Nima got mad. Well, more than she already was. Releasing his boyfriend, he smiled sweetly.

Nagisa was very surprised — though not unpleasantly so — by the kiss. He could hear Nima gasping, scandalised. No one else paid it much attention; they were playing a couple, so no one thought anything unusual about their behaviour.

"Are you two done?" Jainukul asked mildly.

Hyuk-jae let him go, and Nagisa turned, red-faced, back to the madame and Nima. Soon Hee looked sympathetically at Nagisa and Hyuk-jae before putting her arm gently around the now-crying Nima's shoulders and leading her away. When they were out of earshot, Jainukul sighed. "What happened here?"

Nagisa filled her in, hesitantly at first but with urging from Hyuk-jae everything came out. "... Then she said she wanted me to go away with her and — well, you heard the rest!"

The madame rubbed the bridge of her nose. "Didn't I tell you to be careful with her, Nagisa?" she asked in an undertone. "We should've ended this weeks ago." The young man avoided Hyuk-jae's eyes.

"Yeah, I know."

With another sigh, Jainukul tapped her clipboard. "Any problems with Soon Hee? No? Okay." She wrote something on a piece of paper. "We're not banning Nima, but she won't be allowed to request your services any longer unless you say it's okay."

Nagisa nodded. "Sure." He very much doubted he would be saying it was okay.

Jainukul left to take care of paperwork, and he and Hyuk-jae were alone for a while before their next client. He snuggled on the couch next to his boyfriend. "Thanks for the scarf," he said happily, determined to put Nima out of his mind. He hadn't taken the scarf off since he'd put it on. "It's so soft. And it'll go with my winter coat!"

He glanced at the window facing the street. "I hope it snows a bit before solstice," he murmured. A dingy grey-brown solstice would be no solstice at all!

And he got his wish. The night before solstice, enough snow fell to stick and not turn into muddy slush. Everything was white and glistening. Nagisa squealed with excitement and instantly packed his outfits for the night, including pyjamas both for him and Hyuk-jae and his dressier outfit. He put on some long johns, thick pants, boots, a turtleneck shirt, a festive sweater, a thick coat and hat, and Hyuk-jae's knitted scarf before heading off to Hyuk-jae's apartment.

Since it was a little after noon, Nagisa was sure Hyuk-jae would already be awake. He knocked on the door, waiting for Hyuk-jae to let him in.

When Hyuk-jae opened the door, Nagisa gave him a wave and a grin. "Brrrrr, it's cold out there!" He tapped the toes of his boots on the door frame, letting the snow that had gathered fall outside. "Do you want to play in the snow for a little bit? Then we can get ready to go to my parents'."

Hyuk-jae was happy to let the night pass without incident. Personally he'd grown to hate snow in the years since leaving his parents' house, but maybe this year would be different. Now he had a place to stay warm in and a job that didn't involve street corners and someone to snuggle with.

Yes, snow didn't sound bad at all.

The night before solstice, Nagisa got his wish. Snow blanketed the city, white and pristine. Hyuk-jae saw it begin before tucking into bed for the night, reading a book and thinking about how nice it would be if it were still going in the morning. Breakfast with Nagisa during a snowing day would probably be really nice...

The next thing he knew, a knock at his door woke him from a sweet dream about getting a pet and sharing a house with the fluffy-haired man.

Despite it being a little after noon, Hyuk-jae hadn't gotten up. He opened the door shirtless and bleary-eyed. What time was it even?
His boyfriend stood on his doorstep, wrapped in what looked like many layers. His cheeks were pink and his eyes bright as he waved, cheerily greeting Hyuk-jae. Blinking, the Firebender stood back as his boyfriend knocked snow off his boots.

"Do you want to play in the snow for a little bit? Then we can get ready to go to my parents'."

Hyuk-jae laughed. "I haven't even had coffee yet!" he exclaimed, closing the door. "Can I wake up first?" His bed was still down from the wall, covers a tangled mess. Heading into the kitchen he put the kettle on, wincing at the feeling of cold tile on bare feet. Once the water was heating, Hyuk-jae went to his closet for socks. Stretching his arms up over his head, he rolled his shoulders. The resulting cracks were loud, since he'd just gotten up. All in all it was clear that Nagisa had roused him from his bed.

The kettle whistled and Hyuk-jae moved into the kitchen again. "Tell me about your morning," he said, pouring the water over ground coffee. He put eggs into a pan and set about frying them with strips of bacon. For Nagisa, toast. For himself, pickled vegetables.

The coffee smelled perfect and as he poured it into cups, Hyuk-jae sighed a little. He'd almost forgotten about seeing his boyfriend's parents again! God, what would he wear?

Nagisa laughed. "I was sure you'd be awake already!" He began the long process of taking off all of his outerwear, putting his wet boots by the door, hanging up his coat, taking off his hat.... Once all of it was done, he padded after Hyuk-jae into the kitchen.

"My morning?" he repeated. "Well, it wasn't that eventful, I just woke up, showered, and came here!" He leaned on the counter, watching Hyuk-jae cook some breakfast. "I was so happy to see it snowed! I love snow!"

Hyuk-jae sipped his coffee, and Nagisa settled into one of the kitchen chairs. "You know, I got you a pair of pyjamas. Don't worry, don't worry, they're plain." The fluffy-haired young man made a teasing face. "It's dark blue flannel," he added, smiling shyly. "I didn't know what you'd like, but I know you like dark colours and you had that flannel shirt on that one time. You don't have to wear them at night, but the day after solstice we don't change into our normal clothes until before the block party." He gave Hyuk-jae a cheeky grin. "We don't want to give mother a conniption with your normal pyjamas!"

"Are you excited?" he asked. "I have my clothes all picked out for today — I mean, obviously, I'm wearing them, haha! — and clothes for tomorrow too, and my pyjamas. Do you need help picking clothes out? It doesn't have to be anything fancy if you don't want. I'm just wearing plain trousers, a button up, and a sweater."

"You're adorable," Hyuk-jae sighed, as Nagisa talked about how much he loved snow. However, he stopped with his cup half to his mouth when his boyfriend said he'd gotten him pajamas.

"I don't wear pajamas!" he insisted. "Can't I just — you know, wear my regular clothes?"

Grinning at him, his boyfriend was already a step ahead. "We don't want to give mother a conniption with your normal pyjamas!"

Laughing, Hyuk-jae nodded and put their plates on the table. Nagisa was talking about picking clothing and saying he'd be wearing plain things and Hyuk-jae realized that it was the night they were going to tell Nagisa's parents about their relationship. Sighing, he settled onto his boyfriend's lap, straddling him in the chair and ignoring the food.

"You always want me to wear clothes," he complained, running his fingers through Nagisa's hair. "But I guess today you have a good reason…" After all, he couldn't go naked. It was too cold. A moment or two passed and he bent his head, pressing a gentle kiss to Nagisa's lips before turning to sit sideways on him. Hooking two fingers over the edge of a plate, Hyuk-jae pulled it to him and started on his breakfast.

"I hope they don't mind," he said, after his eggs were gone, "that you're dating me, I mean." Taking the dishes to the sink, the Firebender cleaned his kitchen before going to his closet. He had no idea what to wear… what would be better?

In the end, Hyuk-jae let Nagisa pick his outfit. He also let him pick his clothes for the next day, staying quiet and just thinking about the Solstice. What would they do? Even though his boyfriend had gone over it, it was hard to imagine the holiday he'd described. Hyuk-jae was nervous. As he combed his hair, he was chewing his lower lip.

Nagisa gave him a surprised look. "Clothes are important!" he said. "They're the first impression people get of you!"

He always liked to make a good first impression. Especially with clients.

"I hope they don't mind," he said, after his eggs were gone, "that you're dating me, I mean."

The younger man shrugged. "I don't see why they would," he said, putting his dishes in the sink. "I mean... I don't really know what's going to happen. I didn't think they knew about me but you say they do! So if they do, and they've just been waiting for me to tell them — I mean, why else wouldn't they say anything? — then surely they won't mind whomever I bring home. Honestly, if they've already figured me out then they probably figured out our relationship too."

After much deliberation, Nagisa picked out some dark trousers and a forest green turtleneck for Hyuk-jae to wear to the house, and then some dark trousers and a navy blue button up for the block party. He was starting to get used to his boyfriend's complete(ly unfathomable) aversion to printed and patterned fabric, even if he didn't like it.

The streets had been cleared by the time they needed to leave, so Nagisa flagged down a cab for the two of them. It was much too cold to walk the distance, especially since Hyuk-jae decided to bring his guitar with them.

Nagisa's face was pressed against the cab window as they drove up to the Ryugazaki residence. The plain home had been decorated tastefully for solstice, with only hanging strings of white lights lining the trim of the house, a green pine wreath with a red bow hanging from the door, and in the front window a star-shaped lantern with many colours and hanging tassels.

Inside the house was another matter. A huge fir tree, trimmed to perfection with hanging lights, baubles — glass and home-made by Nagisa over his childhood — stringed popped corn, and a dainty star topper, was in the corner of the living room. Brightly wrapped presents sat under the tree, including presents for Hyuk-jae. Bright red flowers in green-wrapped pots were placed all over the house. A fire was roaring in the fireplace, and Mr. Ryugazaki was feeding it coloured pinecones when they walked in. The pinecones sparked with their colours as the flames licked the surface of each, giving off a fresh, woodsy aroma.

From the kitchen, a mix of baking honeyed meat scent and the scent of baked goods wafted toward them. Megumi poked her head out of the kitchen. "Hello boys!" she said brightly, spatula in hand. "Just take off your boots by the door, there are cookies and veggies and tea on the coffee table."

Nagisa rushed to take off his boots and shed his coat, which he hung on a coat tree by the door, motioning for Hyuk-jae to do the same.

"Hello mother, dad," he said happily, settling into the couch and helping himself to a snowman-shaped sugar cookie. "I hope my presents were delivered?"

Sano nodded from his place by the fire.

"Good," Nagisa said, gesturing for Hyuk-jae to come sit next to him. He faltered, wondering if he should just come right out and announce it, or if there was a good way to lead into the topic. Uncertain, he just held out the platter of veggies to Hyuk-jae.

Nagisa liked it when he wore green. Hyuk-jae didn't really care what he wore most of the time, and was content to let his boyfriend choose. Always easier, wasn't it? Besides, it made him happy.

Quiet on the cab ride to Nagisa's parents, Hyuk-jae worried his earrings between his fingers. Despite his words to Nagisa about his parents knowing, he wasn't exactly sure how they'd take a full-on confession. Probably well, right? They seemed so nice. Supportive.

Except for Nagisa's job! What if they didn't approve of Hyuk-jae because he, also, was a host? The Firebender chewed his lip in thought. As they pulled up to the house he stared. It was decorated so prettily, with hanging lights and a beautiful lantern in the window.

Stepping inside, Hyuk-jae immediately felt… overwhelmed. There were lights and colors absolutely everywhere, and it was a little disconcerting. The sparks of light accompanying the popping of pinecones in the fireplace disturbed his balance a little and so the Firebender quickly sat with his back to it, clutching his guitar case. His boots he left by the door as requested.

Loathe as he was to let go of a comforting personal object, Hyuk-jae set the guitar to the side and took a vegetable from the plate Nagisa was holding to him. Chewing it quietly, he glanced at Sano. The musician didn't seem to have anything to say, really. "Um…. happy Solstice," Hyuk-jae murmured. "Your house is very colorful."

Sano nodded. "Megumi and Nagisa always decorated like this," he said.
Hyuk-jae nodded in return. "I see," he said. A moment or two of silence passed before he glanced at Nagisa, uncertain. Maybe he should relegate himself to the kitchen? He could be helpful, surely.

Standing, the tall young man took himself in to see Nagisa's mother, offering to help her with her food preparations. "Thank you for having me," he said. "I appreciate your hospitality." Mentioning that he'd brought his guitar, Hyuk-jae admitted that he'd never really celebrated Solstice like this. He hadn't noticed the presents under the tree with his name on them, either, and wasn't expecting any.

Megumi bustled about the kitchen, giving Hyuk-jae a warm smile. "Knead the biscuit dough for me, will you dear?" Once Hyuk-jae was all set up, she moved on to chopping vegetables.

"I hope you enjoy solstice at our house," she said, tactfully avoiding any questions about Hyuk-jae's family. "It's mostly for Nagisa," she confessed, glancing at her fluffy-haired son, animatedly talking to his quiet father about something. "He loves solstice so much, always has. Some day, when Nagisa settles down with someone — " she glanced at Hyuk-jae with a small knowing smile, " — Sano and I will tone down everything and have a very simple celebration."

"I hope you play your guitar with Sano and Nagisa's piano later," she said. "Do you know any solstice songs?"

Meanwhile, Nagisa was happily retelling the Tale of Nima, as he had come to call it in his head, to his father. Sano, unlike his wife, had no issues with his son's profession. "And then I told her that our arrangement was over," Nagisa was saying, "and she left! I felt so bad that she cried, but she was asking me to leave with her, even though I told her I already have a bo — er..."

Sano tilted his head to the side, a mirror image of Nagisa's habits when curiosity was piqued. Nagisa faltered, just as Megumi came in bearing a plate of grilled meat skewers.

"Where's Hyuk-jae?" Nagisa asked, grateful for a diversion.

"He's helping me in the kitchen," came the answer. "We'll be done as soon as the veggies are in the pot and the biscuit dough is cut up and left to rise for a bit."

When the biscuits were done, Megumi and Hyuk-jae rejoined them in the living room. Sano, who had not missed Hyuk-jae's initial reaction to the lights, had turned them off. Nagisa had protested, but conceded to his father's logic: "It's daytime. We don't need it on yet."

"So Nagisa," said Megumi pleasantly, serving her son a cup of tea. "You said on the phone yesterday you had something to tell us?"

Nagisa choked on his cookie. "Um... Yes." He blushed, and stared intently at his socks.

"Of course." Hyuk-jae efficiently went to work with the dough, kneading it carefully. He wasn't very experienced with this type of cooking, but he was great at following directions. Megumi talked pleasantly about solstice in their house. Laughing, the young man nodded his dark head.

"I know," he said, "he got so excited telling about everything you do — it's his favorite holiday, isn't it? And then it snowed… I didn't even get to sleep in today, he was so excited." Megumi's knowing smile in his direction was noted, and Hyuk-jae smiled to himself as he looked down at the dough in his hands. Yeah, she knew. For sure she knew. Which of course meant her husband knew. Why had he bothered stressing? Obviously they didn't care — she clearly just wanted Nagisa happy.

"Do you know any Solstice songs?"

"Hmm?" Hyuk-jae paused mid-knead, an absence seizure ticking through him for a few seconds. "Sorry — did you ask me something?"
Megumi repeated her question and he shook his head. "I don't, not really. Maybe one or two? But I can improvise, it's fine." He relayed how Nagisa had given him the guitar, and how very beautiful it was. Orange eyes shone when he talked about the fluffy-haired young man.

Once they finished the food preparation, Hyuk-jae followed Megumi into the living room. He was startled to see the lights off. Nagisa clearly was unhappy about it, but his father seemed to be having none of it. The lights stayed off, for which he was endlessly thankful. Taking cup for himself, Hyuk-jae went back to the kitchen for plain hot water. As he returned, Megumi was serving tea and questioning her son.

"You said on the phone yesterday you had something to tell us?"

Hyuk-jae stood there, looking at Nagisa. Was he supposed to say something? Surely Nagisa didn't want him to tell them. But his boyfriend was flushed and looking at his feet, coughing over his cookie. Sighing, the Firebender came to sit next to Nagisa, reaching over and winding their fingers together. He'd just… wait. Give Nagisa time to get it out on his own, right?

After all, Megumi and Sano were not Hyuk-jae's parents.

He knew what his own parents would say. Nothing, most likely, or nothing complimentary. They'd probably question Nagisa's sanity for putting up with someone like him. Hyuk-jae wondered about that very thing often enough himself. Was it just a matter of time?

In the warm light of the Ryugazaki's living room, it didn't seem like it. Nagisa's hand was sweaty in his, and he glanced worriedly at his boyfriend's face. Well….?

Hyuk-jae took his sweaty hand; Nagisa's heart skipped a beat, both from his boyfriend's touch and with nerves. He missed the secret smiles Sano and Megumi exchanged over his head, waiting patiently for their son to tell them something they had known a long time ago.

His throat feeling as parched as the Great Desert, the fluffy-haired young man took a sip of tea before speaking in a very uncharacteristically quiet manner. His voice shook, and he was sure everyone could hear his heart pounding.

"Remember when we were over for dinner last time," he started slowly, the teacup rattling in his hand as he reached over to set it down on the table, "and you asked me if I had a special someone, and I said I did?"

This was it. There was no going back. He looked up, his expression clearly terrified. Even if Hyuk-jae was certain his parents knew, Nagisa had never told them, never made it — at least, to his knowledge — obvious. He shifted in his seat, then screwed up his eyes as if anticipating a blow. "It's Hyuk-jae," he blurted out, squeezing Hyuk-jae's hand tightly.

There was no immediate verbal response. Nagisa opened one eye and saw to his immense relief that both of his parents were smiling from ear to ear. "How lovely for you two, dear," said Megumi gently. Sano nodded in agreement. "Congratulations. Thank you for telling us, and for bringing him home. Do you only like boys, or do you like girls sometimes too...? Oh — I'm not saying you have to like girls, dear," she added hastily, seeing Nagisa's shocked face. "I was just curious."

"Just boys," said Nagisa shyly, leaning into Hyuk-jae. "Just Hyuk-jae, really."

Sano stood suddenly and came back with some sparkling apple juice in wine glasses. Hyuk-jae's had water, though Sano left the bottle nearby if Hyuk-jae wanted to help himself to it. Megumi lifted her glass.

"To my son and his boyfriend, and to a mother's wish come true," she said happily. "Congratulations!"

Hyuk-jae did not miss the exchange of looks between Nagisa's parents. He relaxed, waiting for Nagisa to speak. The poor thing was obviously terrified, blurting out that Hyuk-jae was his special person while screwing his eyes up tight. The Firebender nudged his boyfriend after a minute, and he cracked one golden eye.

Sano and Megumi were both smiling.

"Congratulations. Thank you for telling us, and for bringing him home."

Well, wasn't that nice? Of course, the following question was awful personal, but — Hyuk-jae couldn't help his laughter. It just… came out! Nagisa was clearly shocked by his mother's inquiry, but admitted that he really only liked boys. Hyuk-jae flushed as the younger man modified it to be just him.

"Boys here, too," he said, "not that you asked me. So — uh, this has been going on for a while. And I'm glad that we're all on the same page, so —" Sano's handing him a glass startled him, but he smiled, taking it. Megumi's sweet toast brought a smile to his face, and Hyuk-jae turned Nagisa's hand loose in favor of putting an arm around him.

"Happy Solstice," he said, and then drank from the glass.

A few moments later he glanced at Nagisa. "I told you they knew," Hyuk-jae murmured quietly. His boyfriend looked quite relieved. Well, he supposed he couldn't blame him. One never knew how people would react to things, after all. Looking to the side, he paused. Was that… something with his name on it?

Oh no.

Hyuk-jae hadn't brought a gift for anyone! Well, he'd had a key for his apartment made, but he was planning to give it to Nagisa for his birthday, so he really hadn't even brought that with him — but he had absolutely nothing for Megumi or Sano. Feeling stupid and inexperienced, he worried his lower lip with his teeth. What to do?

His reverie was interrupted by Megumi saying it was time for dinner. As before, she hadn't made enough rice for him — mercifully letting him out of saying anything about it. There was plenty of meat and vegetable for him without anything else, and the meal with Nagisa's family felt, to Hyuk-jae, truly natural. He was able to relax more than he had previously, allowing more of his gentle personality to surface. Nervous mannerism and reticence often closed him off as a cold or rude young man, a fact that he did not readily know about himself.

"Oh, I'm sure it has," said Megumi pleasantly, sipping her sparkling juice. "Nagisa's just never really opened up about it, so I didn't want to ask outright. We decided long ago he'd tell us when he was ready. Though — " here she laughed " — I couldn't help but try to nudge him in that direction."

Nagisa's face burned with embarrassment. "So Hyuk-jae was right," he said, somewhat accusingly. "You already knew!"

Megumi and Sano both laughed. "Of course we did," said his mother. "You're our son." It was as if it was the most obvious, natural thing in the world. Which it was, though Nagisa knew that others might disagree.

Hyuk-jae put his arm around him, and Nagisa settled in closer to his boyfriend, still red but smiling now. What a lovely solstice!

Soon it was time for dinner. There was a bowl of rice with enough for three, Nagisa observed. Good. Megumi had gone all-out on the meats and veggies to compensate. There was a spiral-cut ham glazed with honey, grilled meats, and — his favourite — slow-roasted suckling pig. Not the whole pig, mind, but choice cuts. They never had a whole pig, since it was only the three of them and Megumi was a firm believer in not wasting food. The cuts of suckling pig nearly melted in Nagisa's mouth.

Vegetable-wise, there were grilled winter squashes, steamed green beans, steamed corn, carrots, and a kale salad. Nagisa was picky, and ate only the corn and squashes.

Megumi and Nagisa talked animatedly, the latter trying his hardest to ignore Megumi cutting up his food. Sano gave his son a look and shrugged as if to say if you don't like it, say something, but Nagisa couldn't bring himself to do so.

"So Nagisa tells me you two work together!" Megumi said pleasantly. "I'm glad he has someone I can trust to look out for him in that... 'job'." Nagisa didn't miss the emphasis.

"Mother," he murmured. "Can we not? Not today."

Megumi sighed. "I was only saying I was glad Hyuk-jae is there for you when you're in that place! I won't be so worried now that some weird old man is going to make a move on my son!"

"Oh mother." Work was just a never-ending source of conflict for them. Megumi felt that hosting was much more akin to playtime than it was a 'real' job, and was constantly after her son about keeping safe from preying old men. Nagisa felt like he should tell her the Tale of Nima, but didn't want to get into a fight.

Luckily, Sano stopped any fights before they began by asking Hyuk-jae about his music. Had he written anything lately, he saw the guitar was Hyuk-jae going to join them playing? Nagisa smiled. His father always knew the right things to say.

Dessert was a subdued affair. Nagisa of course loaded up on the pies his mother made, but there were also some nicely sliced fruits: apples, mostly, and peeled kumquats. Sano and Megumi both had a little bit of each, and a cup of coffee with it.

After dessert, they moved back into the living room. "Presents!" Nagisa said, sitting excitedly by the foot of the tree.

"We got you a few things, dear," said Megumi gently. "Nagisa said you just moved into your first apartment, so we got a few practical gifts. And don't worry if you haven't gotten anything for us," she added, guessing that he hadn't realised he would be included in family gift-giving. "They're gifts. They don't need to be reciprocated."

Nagisa missed the exchange, being head-first in the pile of gifts. "This one's for me!" he said, resurfacing with a medium sized box. He handed Sano and Megumi boxes as well. Sano's box was thin and flat, and Megumi's box was small and square.

"But open my gifts for you first," he demanded. Laughing, Megumi opened hers. Under the paper was a small, velvety, hinged box; inside was a pretty charm with a bright green stone on a delicate golden chain. "Oh!" she murmured, lifting it out of the box. "It's beautiful."

Sano opened his present methodically, taking care to lift the tape neatly off the paper, which he then unfolded; it was a stark difference to Nagisa and Megumi's habit of ripping off the paper with abandon. His gift from Nagisa were a few records; two were of a popular singer, and the other was of Nagisa. "I went to a studio last spring to record," he said by way of explanation.

Then Nagisa nudged a box toward Hyuk-jae. "This one has your name on it," he said, his eyes shining. He already knew that there was a pretty set of plates and bowls and mugs inside.

As before, Nagisa's parents made Hyuk-jae feel very natural at dinner. Megumi didn't try to feed him things he couldn't have. The Firebender ate the squashes and beans and carrots and meat, but avoided the corn. The meal was delicious — festive and perfect. This had to be what most people thought of when they thought of a Solstice meal, right?

Hyuk-jae glanced at Megumi when she spoke about their work. He took from her tone that she did not approve of hosting. How would she feel if she knew about his previous employment, then? Shifting uncomfortably, he nodded. "Yes ma'am," he said.

"Mother, canwe not? Not today."
"I was only saying I was glad Hyuk-jae is there for you when you're in that place! I won't be so worried now that some weird old man is going to make a move on my son!"

"You don't have to worry about Nagisa," Hyuk-jae said, voice serious. After all, of the two of them, hadn't he been the one a man made moves on? In any case, if it even looked like someone wanted to try making a move on his boyfriend, he was certain he could handle it. Wasn't he pretty good at taking care of Nagisa?

Sano asked him about his guitar, changing the topic entirely. As he ate the fruit put out for dessert, Hyuk-jae discussed acoustic guitar arrangements with Sano. He admitted to having a written a thing or two in recent memory, mostly just music but some with words. "I'm not a great lyricist," he said, blushing a little. "Mostly just, you know, whatever I'm thinking about at the time." Sometimes Nagisa, but he refused to say so.

Once dinner ended it appeared that they'd all be doing presents. Enjoying Nagisa's childlike excitement, Hyuk-jae gazed at him with indulgent eyes as he sat at the foot of the tree. Megumi caught his attention, saying they'd gotten him presents. Opening his mouth to protest, Hyuk-jae shut it again as Megumi said she hadn't expected him to get things for them.

Well, of course she hadn't. Nagisa probably told her all about how poor he was before. Maybe he'd get them gifts later, once he knew them better? His boyfriend, in typical fashion, paid no mind to their chatter. Like her son, Megumi ripped into the box presented to her, revealing a lovely necklace. For Sano, who opened the paper in an orderly fashion more like Hyuk-jae's, records. Hyuk-jae looked at them with obvious interest. He loved records and music! The one of Nagisa particularly piqued his interest.

To be honest, Hyuk-jae was a little jealous. On the other hand, it was a great idea. Perhaps he'd record something for Nagisa for his birthday… resting his chin in his hand, he smiled as he watched the little family. Nagisa scooted a package over to him and Hyuk-jae stared at it a moment, uncertain. It was so nice of them, truly. As he felt gratitude, however, he also felt guilt. He really didn't do anything to deserve presents.

Carefully opening the paper, Hyuk-jae managed to get it off the box all in one large sheet. He set it gently aside before opening the box, revealing cheerful red pottery. Two plates, two mugs, two bowls — perfect for meals with Nagisa. "Thank you very much," he said, running shaking fingers along the edge of a plate. As if he thought they might break, he set them aside very carefully. They were beautiful!

The Firebender cleared his throat, feeling everyone staring at him. He looked at Nagisa, nodding at the sparkly silver package next to him. "Isn't that for you?" he asked, keen to remove the attention from his person.
