A Random Street Corner — Larkspur Lane

A tall, slim boy stood on the corner of the street, a pile of newspapers under his left arm. The now-greyish white of his shirt looked like it had seen better days, and his black vest had been mended before. He wore the sleeves rolled up to the elbow and with his right hand waved a copy of the latest issue of The Republic Times. A slim strip of red leather wound his way about his wrist, the colour meant to be eye-catching.

"The Avatar is in the city, ladies and gentlemen!" he called, voice carrying over the din of the streets somewhat. "Read all about it here! Latest issue of The Republic Times!"

Hyuk-jae pushed his cap up a little and shifted his head, moving inky hair out of his eyes. He didn't particularly like being a newsie, it was just the only job he'd been able to get. Mr. Gil wasn't a kind man and he hadn't given Hyuk-jae the job out of pity or mercy. He'd given it to him because Hyuk-jae had been insistent, and because it was easy to hold something like that over someone's head when they had a condition like Hyuk-jae's.

Orange eyes scanned the streets as he waved the paper again, hoping to get a buyer. He'd sold two-thirds of his issues today, so he wasn't behind, but the young man didn't want to return to the office with any left over. Mr. Gil might take it out on him again, and Hyuk-jae predictably didn't enjoy being slapped. It was an incentive to sell every paper. He shifted his weight in heavy-soled boots and put out the cry again, hoping someone would be interested.

OOC: Sorry for the delay, I was missing a few megabytes of muse... *bows*

*Larkspur Lane*

The post office on Larkspur Lane, one of the few in the entire United Republic of Nations where you could still have your mail delivered by messenger hawk. And of course, that came with a certain price. As the dark skinned girl walked out of the building, her hands in her pockets in a way that seemed to denote a need to hold onto the contents, and her face bearing a barely noticeable pout on the mouth, she couldn't help but have mixed feelings about the place. It had the charm of most traditional buildings, along with the hawk coop tower that made it just that much more special than most buildings of this architecture, but at the same time it was just too imposing for the service it offered. Definitely faster than regular couriers and postmen, but more costly.

She felt robbed. And upset. She had come here to make sure her own letter about what had happened the other day at the warehouses would get to her aunt BEFORE the local executive had time to send his report - so as to make it clear that it wasn't her fault, and also that she and her driver had contained the situation quickly. Tough luck, they were sending their mail at the same time. It had only been awkward for her, since the man had no idea of what was in her letter. But her words might not sound so sincere to the Board when they came together with an official report. One of the drawbacks of being related to one of the heads.

Lykka shook her head. Sure, it had cost her more than it should have, but at least it was done. Besides, she was loaded for the next month, thanks to that last delivery. The brand new thick yellow tank top and green sash she was wearing were proof of that - and the hole she made right in the middle of each piece was proof of her lack of maturity. She could only hope they wouldn't cut back on the deliveries to avoid more incidents.... In any case, it was time for a change of subject, an occupation, just something else to do.

"The Avatar is in the city, ladies and gentlemen! Read all about it here! Latest issue of The Republic Times!"

Well that would do ! Getting some interesting information about the city was likely to get her mind off things. And considering that "interesting" usually meant "pro-bending" in terms of information for the young girl, the Avatar's arrival was definitely going to muster all of her attention. Following only the sound of the voice, she finally found the newspaper guy by the corner of a street, waving the news around. She pulled her hands out of her brown pants, and began counting the money she had. It might be a little too much on her mind to be buying something so early after feeling robbed by the post office...

"Hey sir ! I'll have one of those, please !" The young girl told him, expectedly unable to smile as she handed out the yuans. Her green eyes shifted towards the front page of the newspaper, as she tried to avoid having the bills in sight. She could see a picture of a female teenager on it, which surprised her in more ways than one. "Wait, the Avatar is a girl ?" She suddenly voiced out loud.

Oh, thank goodness. A buyer. Hyuk-jae quoted the price and took the girl's money before handing over the paper.

"Here you go, miss," he said, and put the money into the collecting pouch. One more copy down. That meant he was a step closer to coming back with no papers! And Hyuk-jae desperately wanted to go back to the office without any issues. Feeling slightly relieved, the newsie pushed his cap back up on his head.

As the girl expressed surprise over the Avatar's gender and age, Hyuk-jae raised an eyebrow. She was still here? Most people bought the paper and left. He wasn't selling them to make conversation. And why shouldn't the Avatar be a teenage girl?

"Yeah," he said shortly, "and why not? You're a girl." Some people. Hyuk-jae lifted orange eyes back up to the street, scanning the crowd. Should he find a different corner to try and sell the last of these issues? He really needed to get rid of them all. The young man didn't want to think about Mr. Gil's face if he came back with any papers in hand again. The old man had been testy, lately.

It was her first time seeing the Avatar's face. For some reason, people didn't seem to think about the Avatar very much in this city. Lykka was the type of girl that kept her ears and eyes open, even though she did not make an effort to remember everything, but she was certain she'd never heard anyone talk about the Avatar until today. Maybe she was the only one surprised that it was a girl, but she bet she wasn't the only one who did not know. At least she expected her to be from the Water Tribes, anyone who cared knew that there was a cycle to the Avatar's home nation and bending.

"Well, that's... I mean yeah, I'm a girl !" She replied angrily, only realizing now that she'd been more sensitive about this tiny gender comment. Covering her chest with the paper, she stuck her tongue out at the boy for what he said. It was not a logical move, but it made sense to her. Sure, her hair was short and she didn't have very visible breasts but... but that was only because she was still young, they would definitely grow bigger within the year - or so she hoped, that inferiority complex was annoying. Regardless, she took offense from that.

Then she just crossed her arms, putting on a superior attitude and looking the opposite way from the guy, holding her chin a bit higher. "And for the record, I think it's great that the Avatar is a girl. The last two were boys and there was a war in the middle." The Earthbender girl stated like an untouchable declaration. She even ran a hand through her hair, letting out a tiny "Hmph !" of womanly arrogance. With a smirk on her face, and after a slight glance at the paperboy, she opened up the news paper and started reading.

So that new Avatar's name was Korra, and she was from the Southern Water Tribe. It said that she was still in training, but also that she had kicked some Triad butt on her first day. And, somewhere in this mass of lines all reporting what the Avatar said or did, and the questions that these writers had on their minds about this promising girl: she had moved to Republic City. That meant, Lykka would get to hear - or in this case read - more about her !! That was such great news !! It was about time Republic City found interest in greater figures.

As if to make a point, or rather to accentuate it, Lykka kept talking while her eyes were scanning the rest of the article. "You know, the last female Avatar was Kyoshi. And history remembers her as the longest living Avatar and greatest Earthbender. Well, she was a woman and she did great things, that's why I think our new Avatar is going to be amazing !!" The dark-skinned girl said with a cheerful voice "I lived on Kyoshi so I-... Hey, are you listening to me ?"

Docks

The gray cloud cover had lingered overnight, and it cast the docks with a blue-gray light of the early afternoon. A sailor on his boat whistled to Sashu rudely - she returned the gesture by swearing at him. But the big man laughed and vanished behind the railing. She'd helped her father unload fish earlier, and though she'd bathed in the bay, she still wore a short, frayed skirt and a sleeveless shirt. Her feet were bare and soaked, but the ground was warm.

Harbor bells and seagulls created music with the chatter of the docks, the thumps of large wooden boats, and the crashing of waves. Sashu had grown up with the noises, and could pick them out as if they were each a color against a white background. Still, the only color she saw with her eyes were hues of gray. The sunlight was muted by the impenetrable ceiling overhead, and each hue with it.

The waterbender walked along the docks at a leisurely stroll, thinking and occasionally tossing a jest to a familiar face. She hadn't seen Jin since that day in the park, and she hadn't found an earthbender for their team yet. The deadline was approaching, and Sashu wasn't exactly pleased by the way she'd flopped at the search. As she walked she massaged her shoulder, which still ached even though she'd practically rubbed it raw. But catching and then hauling fish did that, and if she was a healer then it wouldn't have been a problem.

Regardless, she walked, one arm slung across her breasts as her hand rested on her shoulder. She wondered where Jin could be. She would have noticed him in public if he'd passed, but it was a big city. Had Sashu even told him that she lived near the docks? For the life of her, she couldn't remember. Ah, well, she consoled herself. He'll turn up sometime. We ran into each other by chance once, it can happen again.

A warm breeze drifted across her skin, briny from being carried over the ocean and bay. At least it was comfortable out. Not too hot, not too cold. Not that Sashu would have minded anyway.

"Well, that's... I mean yeah, I'm a girl !"

Hyuk-jae was confused by the girl's tone, as well as her sticking her tongue out at him. He had only meant that he saw no problem with that Avatar being a woman and didn't think it was worth remarking on. Did this girl think only men could have that kind of power? Ridiculous. He raised an eyebrow but declined to comment, instead choosing to wave the paper again in hopes of selling another issue.

But the girl didn't go away.

"And for the record, I think it's great that the Avatar is a girl. The last two were boys and there was a war in the middle."

"Yes," said Hyuk-jae, in a tone that denoted his lack of patience for this person, "it's great that she's a girl. Are you done?"

But she wasn't done. The girl began scanning the article and then talking at him, as if he could possibly care what she thought. He had no idea who she was! He didn't care if she liked the Avatar! He didn't where she used to live! All Hyuk-jae cared about was selling all the paper issues and getting his money, so that he didn't have to take any more side jobs to pay his rent.

When she asked if he was listening, the young man sighed angrily. "Please go away," he said, "I am working."

Docks

Quite, short sounds of speech could be heard under the huff and puff of someones breath. Indescribable babble as a young man darted from side to side of the docks, and his mind unraveling at the seems as more and more people turned up. His eyes darted from side to side, person to person as he became faint, his face felt cool to the touch but beads of sweat glistened off of his skin like the sun off of the water. Even still, he was steadfast in moving forward and he knew what he needed to do. Even still, Jin couldn't help but feel the itching sensation to run now, and never look back. To be away from all of these people — but then, in an instant, they nearly all vanished. Jin had gotten to the furthest end of the docks, to the water. It was amazing, beautiful, but there was something in his nose. A scent he couldn't distinguish. That..might be the ocean. Still it grew on him, at least enough to ignore it.

His feet pattered in place as he lifted one to set it down to turn his body. He wanted to take in the entire view of the docks. The sun showed it's hues, even if ever so briefly before the clouds covered it once more gave Jin a small smile. It was beautiful, and even more so when the sun lit the waves of the ocean. Steady, and calm, and yet in a moments notice it could turn ballistic and ravage whatever was in it's path. It reminded Jin of himself, more so than he would have liked. For a moment he didn't move, but instead took in everything that was in front of him. She was right...it is calming. The thought left as suddenly as it had come, and Jin was once more refocused on his task at hand. Finding out where Ash was hiding.

As he gazed around, another, similar thought as the last surged through his mind, Now where could she be... He remembered what Ash had said about the docks, even if it were some time ago. He wanted to talk to her again, if not for the sake of talking to her, at least to talk about the team and their problem with the earthbending aspect of the entire charade. They needed an earthbender, and even after a week of searching he hadn't found anyone. There were earthebenders all over the city but Jin wasn't the best at getting their attention, and keeping it. It still surprises him that Ash had stayed to talk to him for as long as she had. He nearly gave up on his search until he saw her walking toward his general direction. Jin shuffled his feet in place for a moment before stopping. He needed to get a grip on the situation. They were at the very least acquaintances, if not friends. He could talk to her and keep his cool, definitely.

"Hey Ash!" Jin shouted as he rose one arm into the air waving it from one side to the other. He jogged his way over to the woman, straightening out his jacket and shirt once he stopped his jog. His face remained still as he took a second to think of what to say. He fumbled thoughts through his head before finally stopping, rubbing the back of his head. "How are ya? Any luck finding an earthbender?" He hoped she had better luck than he did. If she didn't, the two of them were going to have to miss this years competition, something that Jin really didn't want to do. Not now, not after getting so close to it.

She exchanged only a couple words with a man who passed her before someone called out her name. Though her first thoughts turned to Koroku, the sound echoed from ahead, not behind. Lo and behold, there was Jin, that tall eel, and he was waving at her. Exactly the man she was looking for! She was about to dash over to him, only to see that he was running for her already. She grinned and gave him a "Hey," when he drew near.

"How are ya?" the firebender asked right off the bat. "Any luck finding an earthbender?" The woman shook her head in response. Her hair was swept by her walk and the breeze, and a dark strand slapped her eyelid. She brushed it away.

"No, I haven't." She didn't apologize - he obviously hadn't turned up with any results either. Who knew pinning down an earthbender in Republic City would be so hard? "Other than that, I'm doing great!"

She grinned as a harbor bell clanged and the breeze cast the bitter smell of the bay over her. "How about you? Neck still giving you troubles?" She teased and eyed the wraps about his neck. She winked. "Or did you get in another one of your infamous fights?"

The truth was, him calling out had surprised her a bit. He'd been so quiet and shy that time in the park, and now he reached out like they were good friends. Perhaps they were. (Though, she thought, if we don't have an earthbender, it won't do he or I any good.) Still, he seemed glad enough to see her. That was nice. Usually when people saw Sashu, they associated her with trouble. Sashu didn't like that, not at all. Jin was different, though. He was nice. She wished she knew what caused his

"What brings you my watery domain, young fish?" she asked grandly, with a false accent. "Mind you watch your tongue, or I shall throw you in with the piranha-gators!" She set her hands on her hips and thrust her chest out proudly. She was trying to look down her nose at him, but their height differences made her lean far back until his face finally came into line with her nose, but then she lost balance and stumbled, laughing boisterously.

Sadly neither of them have had any luck finding an earthbender for their probending team. Jin couldn't help but feel defeated. With all of the work He had put in to be prepared for this tournament, training everyday, doing his workouts every morning, and going out to actually socialize with people. A faint, short smile crept over his face despite the news. He had to go out, and because of that He met Sashu. He made a mental nod to himself, reassuring himself that everything was going to work out, one way or another. Jin actually nodded when she said she was great, there was no need for him say anything else and yet He was caught off guard as quickly as he nodded. He tried his best to look down at his bandages, one finger playing at the cloth before he let a soft chuckle escape his lips. Shaking his head, he let the cloth go, looking down at the woman in front of him.

"No," He started, a smile and playful laugh coming off of the word. "I don't think I told you this last time, but I just like wearing them. Keeps me focused on the task at hand." Words were never truer as they played across his lips. He had learned the hard way that if you don't keep your mind focused, and on your current task, you will get burned. There was nothing worse than getting a very harsh burn, and even worse than that is when it comes from your mother because you lost focus. Thankfully medical waterbending had come so far in the last seventy years, and it gave Jin a life without the burn. 'I'm good though. Been getting out more often, I still don't like it too much though...It's to...." He waved his hands, emphasizing the fact that Jin was looking for the proper word. "Busy. I was nearly consumed by all of the people walking on the docks."

Young Fish? He asked himself, laughing a little. Then a jesting threat came into light, and if Jin wanted to stay away from an early death he'd have to watch his tongue. He nodded, smiling cautiously rubbing the back of his head. His face looked like he had seen a ghost. This was soon remedied though as Sashu tried to stare down her nose at him. Jin knew this couldn't have been easy. He was easily a head taller than she was, and if he stood straight up he would tower over her. His prediction had come true when she stumbled trying to reach her mark, and the two of them had only one thing left to do. Laugh. Jin wiped his eye when he finally got himself settled. "What am I doing here?' He asked himself, a finger tapping at his chin. "You said that the ocean was a calming place. I thought I'd come check it out for myself. Finding you here too was like the cherry on top." He started, and then he started becoming weary of what he had said. What if she took it the wrong way?

Jin couldn't help but nearly stumble on his words trying to retract himself to his previous statement. "And you were right...the ocean is really calming...." He fake smiled again, his fingers fidgeting a little with one another. He hoped that this wouldn't cause any animosity between the two of them. The last Jin needed was a repeat of the day in the park so early this time. Not that he wanted to ever repeat that day, Jin had gone home angry and he could hardly get past it. It took twenty minutes of bouncing a fireball back and forth for him to settle his nerves. He let out a soft coo, air pushing past his lips. He gave a genuine smile before he spoke once more. "I was also really curious about the beach, I haven't been there in so long." He proposed the topic, and possible destination for the two of them to go instead of the docks.

(into) Larkspur Lane

Zenkai walked around for a bit, determined to regain his knowledge of the streets. He realized that there had been new streets, new buildings, and new people added to Republic City since he left.
Things change so much. I swear Badger Mole Street was right here, and there used to be a small restaurant here with the best stews.

Zenkai finally gave up; he needed to get directions. But to where? So many years of, what felt like, nomadic living and Zenkai slowly lost his sense of ‘home’.
What am I even doing here? What am I supposed to say to Father.. to Jin? ‘Hey I’m back, let’s pretend nothing ever happened?’ No… It doesn’t seem right. I need…
Zenkai tried to think of a better term than ‘peace offering’, but that is the only way he could describe what he needed. He had done wrong, there was no denying it. Perhaps leaving in the first place was not the right choice, but the journey was certainly insightful.
Well, at least I know the direction of Air Temple Island: in the sea. Maybe I can get a good look at the whole city from there.

He looked up and searched for the birds. One thing Zenkai learned traveling through the Earth Kingdom is that animals always know where food and water are. He made the next left on to Larkspur Lane.
"The Avatar is in the city, ladies and gentlemen! Read all about it here! Latest issue of The Republic Times!"
Zenkai looked to see a flash of red above the heads of people walking by. Up ahead at the end of the block, a young-man stood at the corner selling newspapers.
Ah, he’ll know where everything is. I should also check what’s been going on in Republic City; Everything is changing. I’m lost in my own home-town. Pathetic.

He reached the newsie boy who seemed to be talking to a customer… or a friend? Zenkai was never good at reading people’s social interaction.
“I wish to purchase one of your papers.”

Zenkai was always told that more explanation is usually warranted when trying to buy wares politely, but he had nothing else to say really.

This young lad was irritating. Not only did he seem to lack that ability to talk to people like in a normal social situation, but he also did not have any manners. Lykka was a 13 year old and, aside from those times she was really picking on them on purpose, people always treated her with politeness. Sometimes forced and reluctant, but still a decent level of kindness, the one that was due to cute youngsters. What was happening now was that the newspaper guy just bounced her off his atmosphere. At least that's how the little girl was feeling.

She frowned. There weren't many things she could do right now that would make her feel better. She could follow her logical reaction and sulk, but it might make him rejoice, and she wouldn't feel better. She could give it up and leave him, but he would definitely rejoice, and she definitely would still feel down. There was also the option of waving her cheerfulness in his face and pretty much shout in his ears about the Avatar, or about girls, or even about the architectural history of The Republic Times building... though it would all be pure invention, she didn't know about it - yet !

Instead, she tried to be the nobler one. Her arms crossed over her tiny chest, Lykka let out a cough of... denial maybe, about what he said. "You know, I think people would be more interested in buying your newspapers if they 'felt' like it was worth buying. For example, having a polite discussion with a pleasant customer might send the image that you will put them in a good mood. Who could turn that down ?"

That was solely meant to mess with him and make him a bit more comfortable to talk with - the young delivery girl didn't know a thing about attracting crowds - but for some reason, be it providence, coincidence or convenience, it worked. Somebody stopped right by and asked for the news. Better, this one even sounded like a pleasant customer. "You're welcome !" She tossed with a bow.

He was intensely annoyed. For once, the young man almost wished for a seizure — just a little one, an absence one. Then he wouldn't be able to hear her talking any more. Wouldn't that be a relief? She just kept prattling on and on... the boy wasn't used to people who wouldn't leave him alone. He found that he was not enjoying her attention in the slightest. Didn't she have somewhere better to go? Something to do? Someone else to annoy?

Hyuk-jae was not interested in being friends. He was not interested in her advice either, and found it insulting. Despite her thinking it might make him easier to talk to, it had the opposite effect. "Miss," he said pointedly, "I do not care what you think. You've purchased your paper, so please. Go be on your way."

He looked with relief to the man asking for a paper, and shook dark hair out of his eyes. Smiling, he quoted the price. Deciding the best option was to ignore the girl, Hyuk-jae put all his attention on the customer and selling the paper. When he was done with this transaction, he could always leave. If she followed him, he could go into an age-restricted area. She was certainly not old enough to follow him everywhere!

Though it seemed the young girl was continuing a conversation, the young man seemed to be trying to ignore her entirely. It was a curious behavior considering their apparent age. Zenkai had noticed that most ‘normal’ people try to find mates. The thought was aggravating.
The young man quoted his price on the papers; Zenkai rummaged through his pocket for the yuans he had left. Luckily, he had just earned some money selling vegetables from a local farm to the vendors in the city. He produced the cash and handed it over to the paperboy, glancing over to the girl and offering a quick smile. Zenkai had no reason to ignore her. Not entirely.
Zenkai took the newspaper, a thick wad of paper permanently creased twice. He noticed the red band of leather around the boys wrist. Zenkai chuckled to himself; it had worked to catch his attention.
“Thank you, sir.”

Zenkai turned, taking a few slow steps as he opened the paper. He skipped over the several pages devoted to recent murders and thefts and jumped right to the article about the Avatar. He scanned for important information.
The old farmer was right: The Avatar DID join a probending team…. What an entrance. I remember the triple-threats, they were a bunch of punk kids fighting for scraps. Looks like someone took over and made them big. So her name is Korra… and she’s not even fully trained? I thought The Avatar could already bend all elements, what is this? Well, I supposed that’s why she’s in Republic City: training at Air Temple Island. I wonder if I can catch her training there? No, actually, the Probending Arena is probably where I’d find her. It seems like a big tournament is about to begin. There is indeed a nice prize for wining… Qualifying matches have already begun!

Zenkai turned around to find that he had stopped walking a few seconds ago. He only made it a few feet from the paperboy. He decided it would be best to stop walking blindly and ask for directions. He took a few steps towards the paperboy again, folding the newspaper and tucking it under his arm, unaware of his mimicry to the paperboy.
“Excuse me, sir. Can you direct me to the Probending Arena?”

The boy seemed irritated, but about what he hadn’t a clue.

...Well that sucked. The whole transaction had only taken a few seconds, just about enough to breathe in and out twice, and maybe even less while looking at it, but to Lykka it took place in four different steps of what resembled a downfall into a pit.

The first step, the standstill of the air that indicated something was missing, that moment when you think you're standing on your own two feet, right before realizing there's no more ground underneath you, when that feeling in your chest is still as stable as always. The paperboy told his customer the cost of the newspaper like for a normal transaction, and the customer was looking through his money to pay. A situation in which she did not take part. She 'could' not.

The second step, when you finally realize that you're falling, but it's too late and you're helplessly left with the confusion of having to deal with something you have no control over, that is your descent into the unknown. Along with that should come the painful realization of a painful end. The customer produced the cash and handed it over, the paperboy took the cash. Half transaction complete, and Lykka's presence - or rather, the way she perceived their awareness of her presence - faded even more, like the sight of the surface while falling.

The third step, that tiny bit of hope that pushes you to extend your hand to reach out to something in order to prevent the inevitable. Something that you see, that may or may not really be there, and that may or may not help you out, but you still want to reach it. The customer smiled at the girl. She did not notice immediately, still dealing with her own confused state. Or maybe she doesn't want to acknowledge it, because it does not fit the situation that's supposedly unfolding in front of her. Regardless, it's still a smile and it's gotta be responded too. So she smiles back... Too late.

The fourth step. It's over. You missed your chance, whether it was real or not, to avoid the rest of your fall and must now either give in to your fate and brace yourself, or panic because you do not want to think about the contact that's about to take place, and you refuse to accept that it's going to hurt... so your body reacts the way it usually does when you panic, which might eventually make it hurt even more. But it doesn't matter because you're nearly at the bottom. The newspaper's sold. Transaction complete. The two are now free to go on their merry ways, one with the money, the other with the paper. The situation breaks into two halves and Lykka is part of neither of them. Instead, all that awaits her... is the ground.

Well, in her case it is less dramatic than it sounds. It would be akin to falling a meter down or something short like that. What hurt more was not the collision with the ground but the fear of it that has built up. It didn't matter that she was left alone, but it did that she'd been ignored... And yet, she just folded her paper and snickered. "Pfft. Adults..." She said to herself, running a hand through her short hair to shed shut the hatch of the sadness that was growing. Falling was not so bad if you could get back up. Besides, she had stuff to do. Such as... she had to... what was it again ?

Alright, she had nothing else to do. But the best thing about that: she could now find something to do. Positive thoughts returning to her once again, she just looked around in hopes of spotting something interesting. But there wasn't anything interesting on Larkspur Lane. Well, if she walked a bit, something would definitely come up. So she turned around and walked the other way... And so it did.

“Excuse me, sir. Can you direct me to the Probending Arena?”

She turned around. The customer was asking for directions, now. Lykka was a delivery girl, it was her cue ! "It's five blocks away to your left, on Yue Bay !!" She shouted from a distance "But you're on the wrong side of town, you'll have to use the bridge and make a detour !!"

Larkspur Lane

What was it with people today? Was everyone who bought a paper going to stop dead in front of him to read it? Feeling a well of despair grow in his chest, Hyuk-jae sighed. This, this right here? This was why he never sold papers on the corner of Larkspur Lane. There were always crazy people on Larkspur Lane, crazier even than himself. Hyuk-jae preferred to sell in business districts around the City Hall, but someone else had beaten him to his favourite corner that morning. He'd be sure not to miss it the following day, after all this trouble.

“Excuse me, sir. Can you direct me to the Probending Arena?”

Could it be? Was there possibly hope of escape?

As the newcomer asked for directions, a gleam formed in Hyuk-jae's eye. "You know," he said, "I never go there myself, but it seems that this young lady —" he gestured to the girl, "knows just where to go. I bet she'd love to show you where it is!" He tipped his cap and bolstered his armload of newspapers. "Sounds like she might be helpful with that detour.

Make an escape, a quick escape. He could always hawk the paper on another street corner. As the girl turned he began to edge away, and then to walk swiftly.

It wasn't that he hated people, it was just that... some people need to be left alone. Some people don't enjoy long conversations with people they don't know. Some people need to be approached gently and left to their own devices to decide if they want to continue a relationship. Hyuk-jae was this kind of person.

((H-j is out! He feels he has escaped narrowly. You two feel free to continue onwards!))

Docks

Since she'd last seen him, Jin hadn't changed much. He kept the wrappings about his neck a secret, but Sashu had her doubts. It would be itchy in the heat and soggy under rain. (It would be neither today, but still.) But she wouldn't press him about it. Not now. He treated it with ease, so it probably wasn't too big of a deal. Perhaps it wasn't wounded after all: just a ghostly trace of a scar that Jin chose to conceal. Jin continued, "I'm good though. Been getting out more often. I still don't like it too much, though... It's too... Busy."

Sashu nodded. The docks swarmed with people, and Jin didn't do well with people. Still, he took her joke as she intended. He mused aloud, throwing in a quick compliment. Sashu smirked as his cover-up tumbled out immediately after. "It is," she agreed. Though the people around here aren't helping. She decided they should leave this place soon. Sashu obviously had no problem with the hustle and bustle of the docks, Jin wouldn't want to be surrounded again. Consumed was his word.

"I was also really curious about the beach. I haven't been there in so long," he said with a smile and a sigh. Sashu nodded. "Let's go then." She turned but gave him a smile and a wink. "It's probably not the same beach you remember though."

She held out her hand towards him, but whether he extended his own or an arm, she didn't know. "Walk with me." As they went, she made sure to circle wide around anyone doing their bartering right off of the boat, as well as crowds that might upset Jin. The gulls squawked loudly but Sashu no longer even looked up at them. They were just more instruments in the music of the ocean. The harbor bells rang happily though, despite the gray weather.

"The place I'm thinking of is less sand and more rocks. It would be a good place for both of us as well as an earthbender, if we find them. It's not so much the big sandy shore that you're used to, but there won't be any people there." At high tide, the little niche would have a bit of wet sand, and still plenty of room to walk around in. At this hour there would be a semi-large stretch of dry sand beneath their feet, and Sashu would be able to pull up as much water as she needed at will.

Sashu spoke up again. The walkway that was just past the wooden planks of the docks was rough beneath her feet. But years of making this place her home had made her less sensitive to the seaweed, pebbles, fish scales and cold water. "Anyway, I'm not super worried about finding a third. He - or she - will come find us eventually. And then maybe we could all train here together."

The subtleties in her movement, in the way she reacted to the things he did didn't elude him. They stared him down like a hawk on a mouse, but what they did do was confuse him. He wasn't unaware, but rather, bewildered and confused by what they could possibly mean. What could she be thinking, or saying to herself about everything he did like his poor mop-up of his potentially disastrous forward compliment. Strange and different were two words that barely fit inside of Jin's little world, and he lacked as much experience with them as they held context to his life. Even after his over-analytical conversation within his mind about what everything she did could mean, she once more took his attention. She confirmed his assessment of the beach, and continued on about the beach.

Even as a smile etched it's way onto his face a single thought flooded his mind like a dam bursting open. Not the same? What could they have done? He wondered, what could have possibly happened in the last fie or six years? What could the city have done to this most sacred of places? Jin wondered to himself the extent of what was different. Out of the corner of his eyes he saw her hand extended. Jin's body froze for but a moment and everything he was thinking about was gone and replaced by something new. What seemed like minutes was in fact only but a few seconds as he filtered possibilities and scenarios around. What would be appropriate? She extended her own hand, so she must of known, or at least expected him to respond. But the last time he did something even he was unsure of, everything seemed to drop dead awkwardly and she left.

Finally he came to an understanding within himself, and his hand extended his own hand. He was still nervous of the outcome but he wouldn't let itself shine like a beacon of light in the dead of night. His hand gently grabbed hers, he grinned, bowed and then cupped their hands. His voice showed very little hesitance. "Well then, by all means, lead the way." And then as the two walked Jin noted still that there was a lack of people. Were the docks always this dead, or did Sashu just go out of her way to make him more comfortable? Whatever the case, Jin listened in on her words, his mind focused now on what she was saying. Then it hit him, a mental bop on the head and the sound of him saying 'duh' was all he could think about. That must of been what she had meant it wasn't the same. It wasn't, it was something entirely different. He nodded, once more letting a couple words escape his lips calmly. "It sounds like a good place to practice. We can avoid the busy gym, and still get the same training as everyone else. Good thinking."
She seemed full of ideas for the team, a good name, a good bender, and the perfect training grounds. It would be secluded, and since they were away from people they could practice on formations, and strategies.

"You're right. They're bound to find us. I can feel it, we'll all be great." Jin had no doubts about how well they would do in the tournament. The two of them plus this mystery bender would work well together, and they could take it all the way. Jin had a few ideas on how he would compete. Strong and aggressive, taking the offensive was the typical firebending motto. Not Jin though. He wasn't aggressive, or offensive. He always reacted, and used his superior speed to his advantage. As the thoughts of the tournament filled his mind, and the idea of the new teammate scribbled all sorts of designs against the fabric of his mind Jin thought of one other thing. A team captain. They needed once, it was a requirement and without one their wouldn't be any order. Jin and Sashu made the team, and it only felt right. "Ash, I think while we're on the subject of the tournament, and the team, we should discuss the prospect of the team captain."

He started, his eyes shifting toward her. Soft breezes continued to blow his wild, and frisky hair from atop his head to the front of his eyes. He sighed shaking his head for a moment before continuing. "You should be the captain. We made the team so it should be one of us." He said as his pace seemed to slow. "But, you know, leading just isn't in my bones. Not yet anyway. You came up with the name, and from the sound of it also know of a great training spot." It was certainly hard to willingly give up a spot of power, but Jin wasn't as full of himself as he was when he was younger. He knows when their is someone more fit for the job. It was obvious to him that she could do it, but he wondered if she knew it too. [/blockquote]

[OOC: Again, sorry for the wait.]

Docks

Sashu caught the hesitation very quickly, all the time she had. Perhaps he didn't trust her, or there was some misgiving. After years of people-watching, Sashu was good at seeing cues, reading expressions. This was no different. Still, when Jin's hand took hers, warm and soft against the cool clamminess of her own, she saw his grin and watched him bow and she had to grin back. It was a strong hand. Firm. Worn soft from work or training or even possibly bending.

As they walked, he said, "It sounds like a good place to practice. We can avoid the busy gym, and still get the same training as everyone else. Good thinking." She nodded, gazing up at a large trading galley with massive and elegant Fire Nation banners. The sails cracked despite the gentle breeze: they reached towards the sky and caught massive amounts of air. Men who all looked quite similar in appearance were hurrying up and down the gangplank. Sashu realized for just an instant that she might like to see the archipelago someday.

As for her statement about their future partner, he agreed with her. "As long as he's not a total jerk, we should be fine..." Then she looked up at him and winked, swinging their hands happily. "I could convince him to be nice, if you know what I mean." She blew a fake kiss and giggled, despite thinking that sometimes the best persuasion came through force.

Still, Jin spoke up. "You should be captain. We made the team so it should be one of us."

The words surprised her, and when he slowed down, Sashu moved in front of him to match his pace - backwards. She still held his hand, however. Jin seemed full of thought. "But, you know, leading just isn't in my bones. Not yet anyway. You came up with the name, and from the sound of it also know of a great training spot."

She tilted her head for a moment, feet expertly putting the pavement before (behind?) her. She honestly couldn't tell if he was happy or sad about this. Still, even though he seemed to think there was some sort of argument, Sashu had gone over it herself a few times.

"Okay. I agree," she said with a kind smile. Her heel landed in a tiny puddle. The seawater was oddly warm. "Sure, I'll be captain. I just hope our earthbender doesn't have a problem with it." She laughed aloud and let herself move back over to Jin's side, where she swung their hands yet again. She liked how they felt. Holding hands wasn't a common thing for Sashu to do, so maybe that was why she enjoyed it. It was the novelty of hands she'd never brushed, never kissed. Hands whose movement she could not anticipate. Hands were oddly personal things. Most people didn't know that their personalities could be reflected in them.

They weren't off of the docks yet, but now the beach was within sight, and a few tiny specks for children were playing in the damp sand. She felt like skipping. The breeze felt amazing on her face, easing her worries away. She couldn't help but smile and smile and smile. "This season is going to be so awesome. I remember when I was little, all I wanted to do when I grew up was be an amazing pro-bender. I would almost exclusively watch the waterbenders on the ring, trying to imitate them later on."

She squeezed his hand. "This will sound super dumb, but it's like a dream come true." She gazed at him. "And it's all thanks to you. If I hadn't met you, I might not have ever even found a team."

Sashu's eyes gazed up, and Jin couldn't help but follow where her eyes headed. Jin's eyes found the Fire Nation flag sitting proudly in the open. Jin couldn't help but smile, had it been one-hundred years prior, that flag would of symbolized a nation taken over. Now it was a sign of peace and prosperity between all four nations. It was the same as this entire city. This city was made to show that the people of this nation could live together in harmony, never dictated by fear or oppression. His smile seemed almost cemented on his face, and he couldn't help but laugh when she spoke up about their partner. He nodded and added, "I'm sure he won't be. You know how to bring the fun out in people." Then she added more, and Jin was taken a little aback at the statement. He didn't quite know how to react. He didn't spend any time dwelling on it, instead he gave a small chuckle and added once more. "Let's hope he doesn't need any convincing."

What else could he have said? Yeah that's a great idea! He read off in his mind, and he decided that he made the right choice to not say that. Jin was still working on getting her pattern down, but it was hard. He wasn't very good at it, but she was completely unknown, something completely different and out of the norm. His mind was quickly taken off of the subject when she turned to face him, now walking backwards, but still head forward, and Jin's eyes sharply opened and he let out a soft chuckle. Their hands were still attached, and Jin liked it, but he was happy that she decided to take his offer to be the captain of the team. It was a relief to know that he didn't need to worry about it any more. Jin nodded at her comment of their not yet found teammate. "Well he, or she, can't really be to upset. We formed the team before we found them, and so we already established the team leader. They shouldn't, no, they can't be upset about it." Jin said smiling, with an almost joking tone. He meant every word though. It wouldn't be in their right to be upset about it.

Jin closed his eyes for a moment as she swung their hands once more. He didn't know what she was thinking about it, but he enjoyed it. This was even new to him, and it was almost thrilling. He could walk like this forever, miles would be nothing, and it would still be different, and thrilling. Only moments passed before he opened his eyes, and listened to the woman that was beside him. He smiled, but soon turned his face as it turned red. He laughed nervously, coughing and then nodding. He looked back over at Sashu, his face still a bit pink from what she had said. "Thank you Sashu, that means a lot. And to be honest, I didn't want to be a probender until I was fifteen. It was like I told you, it intrigued me then, but only then."
He started. Jin felt that he could at least tell her this much about himself, at least now. "My brother and I...We got into it real bad when I was younger. Once he left for his, whatever he said it was, I felt almost compelled to follow through with his dream of being a probender. It wasn't until I really looked into it that I found just how amazing it could be."

Jin didn't feel any certain emotion when he talked about his brother. He had moved past his brother, but not what he had done. He had lived with it up until this point just fine for the most part. He looked over at Sashu before and laughed loudly. "And if you thought what you said was dumb, this will sound really dumb." He started, one hand coming back up to ruffle his hair instead of fixing it. He didn't know what it was, but he started to like it when his hair fell in front of his face. "If anyone should be thanking anyone, it should be me. Without you, I'd still be stuck in my house, by myself, only wishing to be out there in the ring. I'd still be in the stands, only to return to myself when it was over. You showed me something more, something better." He said as his free hand moved from his hair to everything around them. Slowing down when he reached the sky, the ocean, and then waving his hand toward his nose getting a good amount of smell from the ocean. "You showed me this. So thank you."[/blockquote]
