The Fire Lord and the Avatar began the Harmony Restoration Movement to restore the Fire Nation Colonies to their pre-war state by bringing any Fire Nation nationals back home, but for many of the citizens — of mixed Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom … Read more ›

The Streets of Republic City, Harbor
[tag: Jun Huo Li]

You uh, your aim is pretty good too. With those, knives. Yeah.

The Fox smiled. This kid couldn't take (or give) compliments, could he? As the leader of the Shadowhand, she made sure to congratulate the others on a job well done, and she made a mental note to monitor the boy's performance closely so that she could praise his success.

"Well, thank you. I've put a lot of time and work into that particular skill." Ever since she'd coaxed her former self-defense teachers into instructing her in the art of knife throwing, she'd spent almost every waking moment ensuring that her knives were balance and that she knew how to throw at any kind of target. "But I hope I get to see a lot more of your dragon."

What’s happenin’?

Her heart sank like a stone in a lake as she guided them down to the harbor. The tang of the sea air and the creak of the wooden planks underneath their feet did nothing to help her spirits, and she stopped at the end of the dock, looking out into the water.

She took a deep breath in. "I wanted to stop here because this is a very important place.

"When I was 13, I was out on my own. I spent a lot of my life in an orphanage after my parents died, so I escaped into the streets of Republic City. I met a man...he taught me a lot of things. He taught me how to survive on the streets. He taught me how to steal and get away with it. This..." She swallowed a lump in her throat. "...is where he died. One of the other gangs found out that he knew me and threw him off the end." She turned to the boy, her eyes brimming.

"I wanted you to know that." People might think that a gang leader should be stoic, but that was a complete crock. Leaders had feelings, just like everyone else. Leaders had highs and lows, joy and heartbreak, and there was no point in hiding it. Maybe it strengthened the connection between her and the group, but maybe, just maybe, it made her weaker in the eyes of her opponents. And they would learn the same lesson anyone else who dared to sneer at her did.

-Random Alleyway-

"Hey, Oda, you still got some of that Rabbitbison jerky?"
"More? You've eaten the whole darn animal at this point Shachi."
"Aw- comeon, pleeeeease?"

And there Shachi was, squatting down next to a quite burly man who towered over her and was built like a mountain, though most of her attention is currently dedicated to the strip of dried meat she's gobbling down with glee. "Where do you get this stuff Oda?" She gushed, her mouth still half full and quite loud for what was SUPPOSED to be watch for the meeting going on further down the alleyway. But then again, Shachi was many things and subtle was not one of them. "I mean, ish' jus so go- Mrrrmph! RMPH!" Shachi started before flailing as a giant hand came down over her face and cupped over her mouth. "Shush, there's a light down there."

Shachi blanched a bit and tried to glance right as Oda took his hand from her mouth, she caught sight of the white light down the way and could faintly hear speech. The source was very concentrated, more likely a flashlight then lantern or fire by hand. Which most likely ruled out fire benders at the very least, since they were supposed to be hotshots that would showoff their bending for anything and everything. "Maybe they're just passing through." Shachi whispered sharply as she stood up and stashed the bit of jerky into the pocket of her green jacket and quickly pulled her mask down over her face before whistling sharply to the third sentry just a few feet down the alley.

"Just act natural, they might be coming late to the party." She added, shifting her position a bit as her partner stood up to his full impressive height, the man looking like more muscle than person and coming in a full head above Shachi. Just in time for Airi to expose the three Equalists with the flashlight. Fully exposing all three of the sentries in their green uniforms, all six green eyes flashing light back at the source. Shachi herself half expected a ball of flame, or a whipping metal wire, not a girl coming around the corner talking about missing items. And then a male escort coming out from behind her? Boyfriend, brother? It didn't really matter to Shachi, she was just happy they'd yet to attack. Though the chi blocker could only wordlessly cock her head to the right as he Benjiro spoke, her arms crossed over her chest before she glanced to her left as she mulled it over in her head. That sounded quite fishy, but she'd heard worse.

"Help them? Are they crazy?" She whispered sharply to the other men, not moving or daring to take her eyes off the newcomers. And that's when she felt Oda lean into her. "They're not running for the police, there's no need to worry. And we can't be the champions of the common man if we refuse to help them." He snapped back at her, causing the woman to jerk to the side before eyeing the two up and down with trepidation. "Fine." She grunted in response, pushing away from the wall and striding towards Benjiro, arms up and at the ready to strike if one of them attacked. "Either of you benders?" She asked, her voice throaty as her hand traced down her side and unclasped her bola from the belt, letting one metal end hang limply from the cord and the other in her palm. Her other arm outstretched and index finger pointed straight at the duo as if she were pointing a weapon. "And no lying, we've got ways to find out." She bluffed, slowly advancing with caution before she was less than a foot away from Benjiro her eyes just dimly visible through the green glass. "So, what'ch ya say vigilante?" She hissed before looking to Airi and tilting her head at the girl. She looked entirely... Benign. Maybe these two wouldn't be a trouble at all, in fact, it looked like a bad sitcom in the making at the moment. And less like secret Republic City special forces team.

Random Alleyway

One of the Equalist members approached the duo, looking ready to attack at any moment he or she felt threatened. Airi gulped, hoping it didn't sound as loudly as it did to her. She held on tight to the borrowed flashlight, looking from the Equalist to Benjiro and back again, trying to think of an answer. The way he or she (it was probably a she, now that she looked for a gender) talked and stood was enough to intimidate the poor little firebender, making her heart beat so hard it hurt her chest and her stomach flip flopped so many times it felt like it would eventually hop out of her and run off in the direction she wanted to leave in. But no matter what, if they played it right, they might get away easily and even get some help with their stolen goods problem!

"No," she said at long last, hoping her voice wasn't shaky or transparent. "I'm not a bender," she lied, kind of sad that she felt like she had to say such a thing. She didn't think bending was bad! Yes, there were bad people and some of those people were benders, but there was also plenty of bad non-benders! Still, in the situation, it would not be the best to start to preach what she thought and just go along with things. Just which part of the city did they end up in to meet the Equalists?! Equalists were almost everywhere... But there was that once guy at the park! Were they near the park?

She took in a breath, letting it go slowly as she pulled off her gloves. "I have burns from a fight with a firebender, if you want proof," she said, holding up her arms in the dim light. What she said was not a lie, though the fighting was. All of the minor burns on her arms were done by her lack of control of her element, or forgetting she was using it and scratching her arms. The types of burns varried from vertical and horizontal lines to small and big circles. Hopefully, she wasn't overdoing it by showing such a thing, but lying was not some thing the girl was accustomed to as she never had the need. She was always honest, if not overly so; the girl just loved to talk and when she ran out of stuff for the conversation, she would start talking about everything else, even if it was just about turtleducks and her irrational fear of them.

Airi took a step back closer to Ro for a little sense of security as she pulled her gloves back on. Now she would stay quiet, afraid she might say something wrong.

Some Street Somewhere in the City

She appreciated the vote of confidence, she truly did, but Kira wasn't as confident in her navigational abilities as Takeo seemed to be. It would be a different story if it was daytime, she wasn't fatigued from the adrenaline rush, and had had a nap earlier in the day. She wasn't normally one for a little snooze in the middle of the day, but it wouldn't have been a bad idea. Of course, she had no idea that today's events would turn out so, eventful either. Perhaps the good news was that work did not exist for her the following day so that would not be a problem.

She glanced at Takeo before glancing out of the dead end. He suddenly looked as exhausted as she felt. She felt bad that she was, in essence, running the two of them around in circles. If she could only get out of the hodgepodge of buildings so that she could see the water, she would have a much better chance at getting her bearings back.

One step after another she stepped as she walked back out of the dead end and onto another street. She walked until she came to what seemed to be a main road. If they followed this out maybe, just maybe, they could get out of the maze of streets.

"How are you holding up back there?" Kira asked as she turned back to look at Takeo. They were almost out of the streets, she had this feeling. She just hoped that their detour hadn't pushed them too far away from their destination. They had been near before, but they had run quite a ways in one direction and she was worried that their position would be skewed once they were in sight of the water again.

It was at that point she heard voices again. Were they honestly still looking for the two benders? Yeah, she had destroyed their platform, but those Equalists couldn't possibly have that much hate inside of them, could they? She had a feeling that the answer to that was yes. Those people had more hate for benders they didn't know more than people in her own village had for firebenders. It didn't make sense how someone could hate a group for something they had no control over...especially when they didn't know them at all. A startling thought crossed her mind at that moment; she still had to walk back through the streets with those Equalist bums running about. Sure, she would have hoped that they would be gone by then and given up their search, but they seemed the persistent bunch. If nothing else, it would be an interesting walk home...

"I have a feeling we're almost there," Kira stated as she pushed those thoughts from her mind, though she said it aloud more to comfort herself more than to inform Takeo.

Some Street Somewhere in the City

The Waterbender had often thought of making a map as he wandered the streets of Republic City. However, he knew that scribblings done on a piece of paper would get lost somewhere in his apartment, no matter how hard he tried to remember where he put them. Any really important things he had to remember usually ended up scrawled on his arms to make sure that he wouldn’t forget what needed doing. He didn’t a map of a large city would fit on one arm, though, so it looked like that plan would never come to fruition. Maybe he should just hire Kira as a permanent guide to make sure he never got lost. But then she’d have to deal with him all day, and he didn’t think she’d enjoy that. Plus, the way he was, they’d both end up lost all the time because he went running after anything that caught his interest. He was bad at coming up with ideas.

The two walked and walked, eventually ending up on a large road that looked promising. When Kira asked how he was doing, Takeo held out a thumbs-up to indicate his condition, though he was steadily growing more and more fatigued as this late-night adventure dragged on. The man might enjoy wandering the streets of Republic City, but he’d never done it all night before. At this point, it would be a miracle if he could make it all the way home without passing out. Kira must be feeling the same way, and she’d still have to walk home after they got to his place. That did not sound like fun. What if she ran into the crazy Equalists while she was on her own? She might Firebend again and lose control, do some serious damage. Maybe, if he grabbed his water skin once he got home, he could walk her home and be available to douse flames if things got out of hand. It was worth a shot.

Just as Takeo was about to suggest his plan, Kira informed him that they might be near their destination. That cheered the Waterbender up considerably, and he smiled at his companion. ”That’s great!” After a couple more minutes of walking, he spoke again. ”Hey Kira? I was wondering…do you, um, do you want me to walk you home? I mean, the Equalists might still be out there, and two people could fight them off better than one…” he trailed off, not sure how to continue. Then he resumed speaking suddenly as another idea came to him. ”Or you could spend the night at my place! If—if you wanted to, that is.” His tone dropped again. ”My place is kinda small, I don’t know how comfortable you’d be…but then you wouldn’t have to walk all the way back home!”

*The Great Lu Ten Bridge*

...It was a slightly odd situation, in the young girl's opinion. She was staring at him with her green worried eyes, examining the features of his frozen face to see if there was going to be any sort of indication of reaction, or perhaps a hint to help her turn the mood upside down again. He was having a pretty serious moment here, and it didn't seem like it was a really enjoyable one either. The man was not even blinking, it was slightly creepy from Lykka's point of view... Was something happening to him ? A stroke, maybe ? Or he'd just realized he had seasickness and staring at the wide open Bay beyond the bridge had triggered a reaction of some sort inside of him.

Her gaze dropped down a few feet down from his face. It was getting really frightening now, he was pressing so hard against the stone railing that his hands were starting to sink into it. What could be so intense to think about that his body would react that strongly, Lykka wondered. Had it been a different, less odd situation, she would have probably called the man on damaging public property, especially a structure she admired as much as the Lu Ten bridge, but right now she was a more concerned with this guy's well being. Eventually, she was coaxed into doing something.

"Are you OK ?" She said at first. If he didn't react to the sound, then she would carefully poke his arm and speak again. If still not, then poke his stomach, then his head, then maybe throw a pebble- it seemed she wouldn't have to go to such lengths. He was already coming back to his senses, obviously a bit confused by what had just happened. The young Earthbender had never been confronted to something like this, so she did not really know what she could say or do to help him adjust. It sort of looked like he was trying to do that himself, but... still.

She raised her eyebrows. "Remembering something... Your past can't be that freaky, you look too young for that !" She said, sweeping away all the dark vibes that had settled from this moment of absence and worry, with a gesture of her right hand. Then she frowned a little at the fact that he couldn't seem to remember it now. All of that - she glanced at the abnormal wall with an almost cute pout - for nothing ? That was a crying shame, at least to her. Perhaps he just didn't want to have to talk about it with her, in which case she didn't mind, but it sounded rather genuine.

Lykka let out a sigh as he began walking again. "You're remembering almost correctly." She replied to him while kicking on the stone wall to make sure it rearranged itself in a way that covered the handprint - no vandalizing her favorite landmarks under her watch, indeed, even by accident - before hurrying back to his side. "We can see the arena from this side, if you look far enough along the shore on our right." She explained while pointing in the direction of the golden and green building in the distance. "And it's true that it's technically only a few streets away from here. But... It's downtown Republic City, which means real long streets and big buildings."

It also sort of meant he"d have to suffer her company a bit longer. Actually, at the end of the bridge he'd just have to take a right and make sure to keep following that same road if he didn't want to make unnecessary detours or get lost. But she felt like staying with him right now. He was a bit like a stray koala sheep to her... Maybe she wouldn't talk about buildings anymore, though. He used to live here, his story was probably more interesting than anything she could tell him, provided he was willing to talk about it. "So, uhm.... it's probably not going to cheer you up talking about it but, how long have you been away from town ?"

The Great Lu Ten Bridge
(Lykka)

Zenkai chuckled at the girl calling him young. He was only 22, true, but his life felt like it dragged for at least 30. Why he felt so old he could not tell; the memories that made him feel this way weren’t there, but the experiences were. His soul remembered what his mind could not. He still clawed at his mind but found no memories of the bridge.

The Great Lu Ten Bridge seemed to stretch for eternity as they slowly made their way to the end. Zenkai looked a bit in the distance to the right of the bridge to catch a glimpse of the probending arena. There was still a bit of traveling to do, but it was nothing compared to roaming the country side. There was a nostalgic feeling to seeing the probending arena; he could remember trying to sneak in when he was younger. Somewhere in the back of the building one could sneak in, but Zenkai could only remember that he did, just not how he did so.
“I’m finding myself having difficulty remembering a lot of things recently.”

"So, uhm.... it's probably not going to cheer you up talking about it but, how long have you been away from town ?"

Zenkai was a little reluctant to speak at first; the girl was a stranger and too young to understand. Yet, the girl had an aura of trustworthiness Zenkai could not explain. Perhaps it was the short stature or cute smile, but Zenkai found it hard to think of a way that this innocent looking girl would manipulate any information on him. She also seemed to be helping him remember things, if only for brief instances.
“It must be almost five years now. Not even a quarter of my life happened within the past five years, but I just can’t seem to remember a lot of before. Little bits and pieces, like what I just remember and had forgotten. I’m trying to find things or places to get my bearings with, but the rapid development of this city over these short years is not helping anything seem familiar. It is… odd. I grew up here, with my brother. I used to visit the arena a lot, I remember that. I just can’t remember what the door looked like at all. I spent a lot of time training with my father, sure, but I should still remember how to get around. I should still remember the street names. I should remember where home is. Should, but don’t.”

Zenkai’s fists were clenched again. His eyebrows seemed to be permanently furrowed; forehead clenched to hold back the rage he feels inside. He paused at the end of the bridge, taking a deep breath before turning to the right to face their destination.
“Sorry. My current situation is simply frustrating, that’s all. That’s why I want to get to the arena, maybe it will stir up some old memories.”

Some Street Somewhere in the City

Was this street ever going to end? Kira wasn't sure if it was fatigue that was making it seem like the stretch of road was longer than it was or if it was actually that long. It seemed almost never ending. After a few seconds, however, she saw the buildings part, creating an opening at the end of the road. They were almost at the main road again.

She yawned again. She was thoroughly exhausted. It was as if Takeo was reading her mind of something because not long after she told him of their closeness to the area his home was, he mentioned walking her back home to keep her from being alone should the Equalists see her.

"You don't have to do that, Takeo," she stated. "I'll be fine on my own. Beside, we wouldn't want you to get lost again, would we?" She concluded with a small laugh. It was true that she would be afraid that he would get distracted on his way back and get lost all over again. And how would she know and come back to help him out again? That, or those darn Equalists might find him and give him a few more broken bones.

When Takeo offered her to stay at his place to stay for the night she felt herself grow a bit uncomfortable and nervous again. She was very sure that he meant her no harm whatsoever, but still...as much as she felt herself bond with this man, she still knew very little about him. Though, not having to walk back in the late night hours (or was it early morning?) alone while she was exhausted would be a plus.

"You know what," Kira responded as she rounded a corner. "Let's figure that out when we get there." She looked ahead of her. The water opened out in front of her with nothing blocking her path. The road in front of them stretched out where they needed to go. As she had suspected, their detour had pulled them off course, but only slightly. It would only take a few more minutes to get to where they needed to be.

Some Street Somewhere in the City

His offer to walk Kira home was rejected, on the basis that he didn’t have to do it. The Waterbender was going to protest that there was loads of stuff he didn’t have to do that he did anyway—that was kind of his life in a nutshell—but then the woman added that he might get lost again on the way back to his place. He was forced to admit that that was a definite possibility even as his brain tried to argue that he wouldn’t get lost if he just retraced his steps. And there was always the chance that he’d run into the Equalists again. Even if he brought his water skin, he wouldn’t be able to fend off a large group of people all by himself. Well, walking her home was out, but she could still accept the offer to stay at his place. That way neither of them would have to face walking alone and the dangers that came with that usually safe activity.

But that offer was also rejected…maybe. Kira said they would figure that out when they reached his home, which made no sense to him. If she wanted to stay at his place, she would. If not, she didn’t. What was there to be thought about that couldn’t be settled now? This was why Takeo wasn’t good at talking to people. He was excellent at talking at people—too good, some might say—but understanding what others meant was often difficult for him. If whoever he was talking to didn’t speak directly, he tended to get frustrated and demand that they just say what they meant, which never worked. People could be so confusing sometimes!

But they would be at their destination soon, and then the Firebender would have to make her decision. Much as he wanted to complain about her indecisiveness, he would make himself wait until they reached his apartment. He could see the ocean, and so knew that they would soon be there. So, for now, all he said was, “Okay.” He’d be home soon, and then things would be made clear.

[tag: Sashu]

The two of them joked like they had known one another for years. Jin couldn't help but laugh a little when she assured him that she'd somehow get revenge on him. The thought alone was enticing in it's own way. In the back of his mind knowing that somehow she'd reap herself a little payback from the firebender. He wouldn't mind though, and wold prepared himself mentally to counterattack when the time came. Then in only a few moments the two of them stood across from one another, like the they were about to face off in the finals of the probending tournament; everything riding on his single match. Jin let himself think that at least as it helped keep his focus. Jin's eyes stayed closed for a moment, his lungs expanding and closing as he inhaled and exhaled air. His bending relied on the simple concept of breathing, but something so simple seemed to elude even the eldest benders.

Then as his eyes slipped opened the training began. Sashu started off and it was slow, and weak but Jin understood why she had to do it. He had demonstrated his "juggling" act, but he didn't demonstrate just how well he could truly bend. Well, she'd get a taste of that right here. Jin's body moved along his stance like a water flowing down a river. Two fingers on his right hand were protruding from an otherwise closed fist. His right hand snapped forward in just about the blink of an eye. A small flame came from his fingertips entering the ball of water. He pierced it's center and without hesitating he retaliated. Jin's left hand, a fully formed fist came forward a bit slower than his right hand had instead delivering a moderately powered blast of fire.

There was something noticeably different between Jin's bending from when he's defending then when he's attacking. His defensive bending is quicker, and much more accurate. On the opposite side of things however, his attacking was much more stationary, fiercer, and he used the momentum from his body's subtle movement to increase the ferocity. Jin didn't have much time to think though as Sashu was already back on the offensive with two more attacks. They were each a bit more powerful than the last, but Jin wasn't about to let her win now. Jin quickly released a ball of flame toward the first attack, and spun kick a small flame toward the second. He grinned mischievously as the two elements clashed evaporating into steam.

Jin's wide grin would soon dissipate though. He moved his body back into an attacking stance, bringing both arms from beside his torso toward one another. Just as the two were about to clash though, Jin felt a strange presence on the back of his knees. Jin let out a low groan as his legs buckled and he fell backwards a sloppy blast of flame scorching the air above him. He began laughing as her fourth attacking flew past him. Jin brought both arms behind his head, his hips in the air with both legs pointing toward the sky. Giving a strong push off of the ground Jin leaped into the air and as his body descended toward the soft soil he brought his fist into the sand releasing a jet of flame from around his closed hands. The heat wasn't enough to turn the sand into glass, but it was enough to completely dry his surrounding area, whatever good that would do when the ocean decided to re-dampen the water. "That was mighty sneaky of you Ash. Remind to never stand by a pond with you; lest you pull me in from behind." The firebender joked once again around Ash. It was strange, but oddly satisfying to act so loose around her. Jin once more took his stance ready for round two. His body pivoted, both hands quickly arcing forward releasing two jets of flame toward the woman that stood in front of him.

...Wow. That was a very moving story he told. Lykka almost felt bad about thinking of him as a lost sheep. That man really was one. He was speaking such a deep manner that it didn't feel like he was heartbroken about his situation, even though the little girl could imagine that glee was not the first emotion to be felt when realizing that a few years had wiped your hometown from your mind. Just thinking about it made her feel pain, she wouldn't be able to bear not remembering Kyoshi Island's layout, nor even Republic City - but that had sort of been out of convenience, she wasn't that attached to it.

She crossed her arms while walking, as if trying to shield herself from a sudden loss of memory, or maybe to keep everything she knew and held dear close to her heart. It was a bit of a childish reaction, coming from the girl who was attempting to fully stand inside her teens, but it made her feel more comfortable. Her green eyes went back up to look at the man's face, just as they were reaching the end of the bridge. It seemed so intense, betraying the amount of feelings he was keeping locked down. His strength of mind was almost pouring out of him, it both saddened and impressed the young novice.

Her arms relaxed a little while they made the turn into the bigger street. But she didn't know if she ought to keep talking about it or just leave him to deal with this demon - she was the one who brought it up, so there was some guilty hovering over her mind and raining drops of sorrow. "I'm... sorry, I didn't think it would be that big a deal." She said a bit shyly. Any attempt at cheering him up might now be a complete failure, if not because of the mood that had been set, then due to her own upset state.

Lykka let out a long sigh, making sure to purify her mind of all that negativity and staying silent for a dozen meters of walking. It wasn't easy trying to say something after he had opened himself like that. She would have definitely liked to share about her past if she had had a similar experience in her small past. Maybe about her grandfather's death ? That was too personal and too deep in her opinion. Her annoying cousins ? That was too shallow, and she might actually get angry... "Well, I'm sure something will turn up when you get to the arena. No, I'm actually certain of it !" She said with a cheerful smile.

Feeling like that was not cheery enough, she smirked and kept it going. "I may be too toung to say something like that but: when you've lived long enough with a sport, it becomes part of you and gets in your blood." Adding a slightly darker, more serious and manly voice at the end of her sentence. Like a comical imitation of a male veteran. "To me, it's Earth Soccer. It was kind of built into me along with my Earthbending. To you, it's gotta be pro-bending ! You'll see, once you get there, the key to your memories will be unveiled in front of your eyes, and you will.... uhm..."

Damn, it was hard trying to sound deep. "Long story short, it'll make you feel better. I hope you also see familiar faces... or remember your way home. Something great, along those lines."

Jin Ho's Apartment to Yue Bay
[tag: Zombi]

Unfortunately for Mizu, this was how he always looked in the morning. Sure, a shower and a drink usually took care of it, but it didn't look like he'd be getting either at the moment.

"Really, I'm fine." His voice traveled through the door after he opened it a crack and down to the bedroom. Was he insane? Going running when the most exercise he got was throwing drunks out of his bar? Quite possibly.

You really don’t have to run with me if you aren’t feeling well. I don’t want you to hate it on your first time.

"I appreciate your concern, but I told you, I'm fine." Jin Ho was a worrier, and worriers annoyed Mizu. They were always wondering if they were endangering the well-being of others or being inconsiderate, and they always seemed to second-guess themselves. He didn't think that the police should second-guess themselves; how would they get anything done?

For the first time in a while, the morning sun wasn't harsh on his eyes, though he found himself wishing that they could have stayed in the apartment for a few more hours...no. They'd probably get into trouble if they did that, so running it was.

Right. Off then.

And off they were, pacing down the block. The Waterbender opened his mouth to speak, but closed it when he sensed something from Jin Ho. Maybe everything was circulating faster because they were running, but something else drove it to do so. He narrowed his eyes and kept running, trying to match his partner's stride.

Yue Bay was beautiful, and Mizu resolved to go there more often. The water sparkled in the rising sun's light, and he smiled; however, it faltered when he picked up on Jin Ho again. Something was wrong. He was slowing down, and...

Oh, for the love of Yue.

While similar to something done by the drunks at the bar, it wasn't for the same reason. The Waterbender came to a stop and put a hand on the Metalbender's back.

"Are you okay?"

Some Street Somewhere in the City

His small choice of words surprised Kira for a few moments. She was already used to his constant chatter, and to only hear him say "okay" in response to her statement made her feel strange; guilty even. The mere fact that she was feeling guilty almost angered her. She knew she was beginning to over-think things, as she often did, but she felt completely justified in the one moment.

Kira could feel a bit of anger rising up, threatening to rear its ugly head, but she swallowed the feeling back down. He just wanted to help, that's all. She sensed a kind soul and his simple response was nothing more than his response to his kindness being pushed back. Nothing more, nothing less. At least, that's what she hoped.

There was no use in being angry for that. However, she did wish that, for a moment, Takeo would see that staying at someone's place that you had only known for an hour or so was very, well, uncomfortable. Was she exhausted? Yes, absolutely? Did she know that it was probably the best idea? Of course. Perhaps he was just not understanding that...

Kira turned and walked backward for a moment, passing alleys on the way to Takeo's home. "You know, it's not that I don't want to stay..." she started. "It's just, I don't know...it just feels a bit strange. After all, we barely know each other." She hoped that her explanation sounded like such and less like the excuse it sounded like to her.

"By the time we get to your place, I should be able to decide," Kira continued on to explain. "I just need time to think." She paused, waiting for his response to her explanation. However, the wait was short-lived. She wasn't paying attention as they passed another alley. She didn't notice someone hiding in the shadows. She didn't see anything.

A blinding pain was sent through her body as something hard smacked into the back of her head. Her body stiffened and she felt her legs shake momentarily. Unable to support her sudden, surprised weight she felt her knees buckle. With a garbled cry she plummeted to the ground. Her vision clouded, but she refused to shrink back into unconsciousness.

Yue Bay
[tag: Mizu.]

Had Jin Ho known what Mizu really thought about his personality, he would have bid the Waterbender good-bye then and there. Fortunately — or perhaps unfortunately, time would tell — he could not read minds. The fastest way to offend Park Jin Ho was to suggest that he was either not suited for or not good at his job. Jin Ho took being a policeman very seriously, it was a huge part of who he was.

He'd let himself accidentally run too fast, sprinting when he shouldn't have. That hardly ever happened. It was no wonder he'd thrown up, though. The only other time that had ever happened was after a race he'd had to hard sprint to finish.

"Are you okay?"

Jin Ho sat down by the water. The sun was bright in his eyes, and he felt strangely numb. His mouth tasted awful. He didn't even have it in him to be embarrassed, and why should he? Jin Ho was an honest person, truthful about his feelings.

"No," he said honestly, looking out at the water. "I'm not. I never run this route without Sweeper, before. I didn't realize it until we were here." He sighed and picked at the grass, and then laughed without any humour. "I guess I'll be calling in to work this afternoon," he said. He wasn't in any shape to go patrolling, that was certain. "I hardly ever call in. I mean — I can, it's not a big deal, I guess." Jin Ho wasn't even sure why he was telling Mizu that. "I just feel guilty. I guess I should also call my parents, and tell them..."

If he called his parents, he had to call Hoshi. And if he called Hoshi, she'd come over. His parents would expect him to come for dinner, because Jin Ho's mother always tried to compensate for grief with food. Hoshi would probably want to make him tea and expect him to cry a lot. Jin Ho felt like he ought to be crying more, but he still felt spent from the day before. Poor Sweeper. Looking back out at the water, he smiled a little. "Sweeper always went swimming when we got here," he said, remembering. "He loved swimming."

As they walked down the wide street Zenkai’s gaze seemed to be stuck to the buildings on the left. He scanned each one for something familiar; a pattern in the stone, a particular paint color, maybe the name of a shop. This haze in his memory has gotten worse over the past few years. It was a part of why he decided to go back home.
He subconsciously shrugged and looked away from the row of buildings; it wasn’t going to help anyway. He turned to see the little girl’s hyper-cheery demeanor had changed a bit. Zenkai had noticed that he usually brings people’s moods down when he talks to them, but he could never figure out exactly why.

Her smile came back and she seemed to try and cheer him up further, or was she cheering herself up? Zenkai wasn’t sure. Before he could think of anything to say in return, she continued:
"I may be too young to say something like that but: when you've lived long enough with a sport, it becomes part of you and gets in your blood; To me, it's Earth Soccer.”

The child was right, and again displayed a greater depth of wisdom than Zenkai expected from a little girl. Though his memory was failing him at the moment, something else was telling him that he was going in the right direction. Also, the years of training by his father is something that just comes out instinctually. To Zenkai, Earthbending was like making his heart beat; he couldn’t explain how he does it, he just does.
His eyebrow climbed his forehead at the mention of earth soccer. Through traveling the earth kingdom Zenkai had heard earth soccer mentioned several times, but he had never actually seen the sport take place.

” I hope you also see familiar faces... or remember your way home. Something great, along those lines."
Home. I don’t remember how to get back home. Almost all animals have the basic instinct of finding home, how could I forget? Nothing here looks familiar, yet, I know I’m heading in the right direction towards the arena at least.

“Thank you…”
Oh…. I don’t even know this girl’s name. Nor does she know mine, yet she still helps me, a complete stranger? I remember being told to stay away from strangers in the city… If I had a daughter, I probably wouldn’t want her talking to, let alone guiding a total stranger… however, I am fortunate this girl has less discretion. Well I can’t just say “thank you, little girl”, even I know that sounds rude.

Oh, forgive my lack of manners; here you are helping me find my way and I can’t even thank you properly. I am Zenkai of house Hoshigawa. What is your name?

Zenkai gave a slight bow at his self-introduction. He knows it sounds overly formal, but that exact phrasing was something that his mind automatically pushed through his mouth whenever he began to say his own name.

No, I'm not.

Obviously. People didn't usually vomit when they were okay. Upon the revelation of why Jin Ho wasn't okay, it was understandably so. The Waterbender tried to imagine what it must feel like, having had a night of welcome distractions erased by something you forgot, but failed. Mizu bit his lip.

Words tried to escape his mouth, but they were stopped by everything the other man was saying. What could he say? With as many days off as he'd been taking, he wasn't sure that Mr. Chien would be keen on him calling off, but maybe, just maybe, his boss would understand if he told him why he really wanted the day off. Maybe.

Mizu cleared his throat. "I think I understand why animals...well, most animals...love to swim. The water holds you up and lets you float with nothing under you." Idly, his hand started meandering back and forth; the bay water in front of them started swaying. His eyes flicked to the ocean, and a motion of his hand sent a stream of water arcing up and forward; just as it was about to land, another gesture sent it skipping off of the surface. He kept it up until the water was out of his reach; Waterbending was truly magnificent at times.

"You know what? I'll talk to Mr. Chien and see if I can't take the day off as well. I just want to make sure that there's at least someone who can stay with you to make sure you're okay." He'd heard through the bar grapevine that people sometimes took drastic action when things got to be too much, and he didn't know Jin Ho well enough to be assured that something like that wouldn't happen. He'd never be able to forgive himself if it did.

Tag: Airi

Shachi slouched a small bit, her shoulders going lax and her muscles unclenching as she finally got a good look at Airi. At first glance looked just about as threatening as a particularly cuddly teddy bear and Shachi couldn't help but drop her guard when she really got a grasp on who these people were. And hey! At least they weren't cops, unless she was having a dream about what might be the oddest buddy cop serial show ever. But regardless, she was visibly far less tense than she had been moments before, she couldn't be overtly aggressive with a girl looking like her after all! Spirit's forbid she make Airi cry or something, that would simply melt Shachi in a split second if such a horrid tragedy were to take place. Then again, she could still be a bender! And well, she might be sweet looking but that would mean she were still one of the oppressive masses. And that would make her an enemy to the people and the equality that the city needed, even if she herself didn't know it.

She forced herself to remain quiet after Airi's first response, even going as far as checking her posture to make sure she wasn't fully relaxed. Being aware of one's surroundings and ever vigilant was the first lesson which was constantly drilled into her head by her 'superiors' and she could just feel the countless number of green eyes drilling into the back of her skull and scrutinizing her every move. This should have been reassuring to her, but she was still the "New Girl" to them, and as the new girl she could only feel that she NEEDED to prove herself. And dealing with this girl would be proving to them she was worth their teaching, even if she felt her skin getting hot under the uniform and a deep pit forming in her stomach.

She did visually jerk back when Airi showed her scars. She knew benders were terrible! But who would dare hurt someone who looked like Airi? "A fire bender did this to you?" She asked quite surprised, her voice softer and much closer to it's natural tone as she rests her hands against her hips, the bola still hanging from her right hand as she coulnd't help but smile under the mask. "Welcome sister." She remarks warmly, offering Airi the same hand which she's using to clasp the wire of the bola, her palm facing up and the two metal balls balancing the weapon in her open hand. "You're among friends." She smiles under the mask, trying her best to radiate warmness even if the uniform seemed custom designed to instill nothing but fear.

The scars seemed to do the trick, noticing an abrupt movement from the masked woman, but the brown-haired girl doubted that would secure her as a nonbender in their eyes. Burns could be from anything! Like cooking, accidently setting one's house on fire, rug burns and the like. Burns from a firebender seemed a little cliche, but at least it wasn't a lie. It was from a firebender: herself. None were from fights or the sort; she was just extremely careless and clumsy. The only thing she was grateful for about them were that she burned herself and not others.

"Y-yeah. It was a while ago, though,"she lied. The burns all fairer in degrees from all different points in her life. Thankfully, none of them were too recent so she wouldn't have to build up some lie about a chronic abuser or several bullies. Either way, they might try to help her which would not end well. "They're embarrassing to show," Airi commented as she pulled the gloves back on. They were in truth very embarrassing to show. A lot of people would stare or ask if she was alright. Its not like she didn't like people to look down on her, its just that its become something almost annoying to do at the start of every conversation.

"Thanks," she said when the woman welcomed her as a, uh, sister? Interesting way of speak but she wasn't going to complain. She let out a nervous laugh. "It feels nice," she said, like she was glad and safe, though she felt anything but that.

Yue Bay
[tag: Mizu-씨]

Mizu's words about animals and pretty Waterbending weren't able to reach Jin Ho, who was shrouded mostly in grief. When the other man offered to stay with him, he shook his head. "I don't want to cost you your wages and time at work," he said, rubbing at his eyes. "That's really nice of you to offer, but I — I would feel really bad about it."

The policeman made his way to the water's edge, splashing his face. The cool water felt good on his skin, giving him something to focus on. "Of course, it's not like I'd... be unhappy with your company," Jin Ho added quickly. "I just don't want to put you out. I'm probably going to lie uselessly on my sofa and sob like a child, anyway. I can't imagine that being very fun for you." It was likely going to be overwhelmingly pathetic. But he had to get it out, or else he wouldn't be fit to go to work.

He knew his mother would say he should go see that therapist again, since he'd had such an 'emotional shock'. Jin Ho didn't really fancy sitting in offices again, talking about his feelings. It was okay to talk about them with people he cared about but that office was just so... sterile. Realizing his mind was wandering, the policeman shrugged. "If you want to stay with me, I won't turn you down. I just want to make sure you're not going to be worse off because of me."

OOC: Sorry for such a long wait.

[tag: Kira]

Some Street Somewhere in the City

Kira was silent, and Takeo figured that she was still thinking about his offer, though he couldn’t see what was stopping her from accepting. It made the most sense ad by now it was obvious—at least, it was to him—that he wasn’t planning to harm her in any way. If she stayed at his place she’d get to sleep sooner and wouldn’t have to worry about walking home. Why not just accept and be done with it? That’s what he would’ve done had he been in her position.

Then the Firebender spoke, slowly explaining her reservation about his offer. The first thing she said, though, was that she did want to stay at his place. That did it for him, regardless of what she said next. If she wanted to accept the offer, she should. What did it matter that they didn’t know each other and had just met a little while ago? If he’d been planning to hurt her or anything like that he could have just left her at the mercy of the Equalists somehow and they would have done that for him. Kira was just being silly at this point.

Takeo opened his mouth to tell her so. ”I don’t see what—” He was interrupted by a sickening “thwack” sound as something collided with the back of the woman’s head and she crumpled to the ground. ”Kira!” the Waterbender cried. He glanced at the fallen Firebender before looking up at her attacker, his eyes recognizing the man who’d accosted them back at the rally. That was bad enough, but then Takeo saw the rock in the man’s hand and, more importantly, the blood—Kira’s blood—that stained the rock. The man leered at him, and he answered with a stare of pure fury.

Looking away for a moment, the man opened his mouth. “They’re over he—” Takeo cut the man’s shout off by punching him in the mouth as hard as he could. The startled man fell to the ground, where Takeo proceeded to kick his side. ”You—leave—us—alone!” After a few more kicks, the man lay on the ground curled in the fetal position. Judging the immediate threat to be dealt with, the Waterbender moved over to his companion, circling around to keep her attacker in his field of vision just in case.

“Hey, you okay?” he asked, his light blue eyes wide with worry. He tried to get a look at the back of her head without touching her. ”I…I can fix that,” he said, though the pause in his words displayed his uncertainty. ”We can find some water and I can fix that.” He looked up at the Firebender’s attacker, who was still huddled on the ground, remembering the man’s shout. He turned his gaze back to Kira. ”Um, can you walk? We should probably get moving. Someone might have heard him shout.”
