The RP Sample: Descent into Madness

A clear sky was entwined with many beautiful jewels, spread across its dark canvas like sparking dust. Brighter than anything else in the sky was a gigantic silver orb, shining its soft light unto all in the area, including the Western Air temple. It was truly an enchanting sight; one that Yu Long did not wish to see. It only made him sick to even look at it, because he felt that the very sky was mocking him.

The white haired teenager who was naked from the torso up sat down on top of the cliff, scowling angrily at the moon like it had insulted his mother. He would like nothing more than to look at something else; in fact, he would have gone inside the temple instead. However, they would find him easily there since he frequented the place often and he didn't want to be found. He needed to think, to vent, to do... something, but not with them. He didn't want to see their lying faces for a long while.

"Why mother? Why, Dad? Why'd you lie?!" The teenager's eyes flashed golden as he spat his words out out of his mouth. He had no one to hear him aside from the moon, which was just what he wanted. "Why'd it have to be him?! Why that bastard of all people?! Why him?!" He exhaled a jet of fire from his nostrils in anger, unable to control his fire due to his rage. He was also so enraged that he didn't think a think of shouting his thoughts to the world. In fact, it actually helped him vent.

Suddenly, just as the rage came, depression seeped in as well. He hung his head low and sighed. "Why couldn't you trust me?" His eyes returned to a melancholic blue as he turned away from the moon's gentle light. He looked at his arm, which had a dragon tattoo encircling its entire length. His expression was unreadable as he gazed upon it.

"You said this was a symbol of trust in me." He commented idly into the air. "Apparently, you were lying to me again. This means little to you, doesn't it... mother? After all, you couldn't trust me with the truth."

Yu Long breathed out a sigh and stood up. He needed to do something other than brood on them, even if he can't help but do so. He began a firebending kata to soothe his mind. However, firebending does not soothe- it agitates one's feelings even further.

True to form, a snarl formed on his face as his eyes turned completely golden again. His moves became faster and fiercer, while his fire grew even hotter. He was turning something supposedly graceful into an angry dance of death, looking very much like an insane fire demon dancing under the light of the moon.

"Damn you, Sensei!" He roared as he punched the air, sending out a giant fire ball into the sky and beyond. He would have been concerned that he had given away his position so carelessly, but he didn't care right now.

"Why'd have to be you?! Anyone else would have been better than you! Even a paralyzed thief would have been better than being your child!" Although he was a good sensei- he'll never, ever admit it to anyone - he hated his guts. That arrogant jerk took a sick pleasure in torturing him with insane training methods and humiliation just for the heck of it! He even amps it up whenever he did something offensive to his pride! The mere thought of coming from that is enough to make him truly and utterly pissed off.

'Perhaps I'm blowing this out of proportion?' A small, rational part of his mind whispered to the rest. Yu Long viciously squashed that thought down with a glower at the annoyingly gorgeous sky. No, he wasn't. Not when all of them fooled him.

However, as much as he wanted it, he can't kill hem because of that. It was too petty a reason to do so. However... it doesn't mean that he can't make them suffer because of that secret.

"I shall torture you all for what you did! You hear me?! I'm gonna get revenge for this slight upon my honor!" A maniacal grin formed on his face as he began to laugh in a disturbing fashion. Apparently, the rage had addled his thinking quite a bit. How he had become just the tiniest bit unhinged.

Yu - It's evident from this post that you know how to write. While I disagree with the way you formatted, the writing itself is good. Personally, I would have made few paragraphs - it's my style, but I've seen others who did it the way you did. All in all, you did a good job. As I mentioned, good writing. It's interesting that you choose to convey most of the thoughts through speech. Remember, that's not always an option. Consider doing it more internally in certain situations. There was also one spellling mistake - you wrote think a think instead of think a thing. Other than that, good job, just keep in mind my suggestion for the future, okay? ACCEPTED

Jin Huang's Prompt - You have become a teacher. You do not really enjoy teaching, yet you enjoy what you teach. The reason you dislike teaching is because you teach a very dangerous subject, and no one except a select few can understand its complexities. It annoys and vexes you day after day. How do you feel? What do you want to do? Go in depth with your feelings, and no other characters. Just the one.

The door slowly closed as the last student left the classroom. Professor Josh Springer was left alone in the room, standing behind his desk. He watched the door as it swung shut and as it did, he sank down into his chair, thinking. He was a teacher here at the university. He was a Professor of Nuclear Engineering. He had gotten this job a couple of weeks ago as a necessity. He had spent his whole life training for this, expecting to get a job straight out of college. He thought that he would work at a nuclear power plant, or with the government, man had he been wrong. There wasn't much demand for someone of his talents, and he had jumped at the first job that came his way. Unfortunately, it had been a job teaching, here. He had never expected to teach other people. He wasn't exactly what you'd call friendly. He prefered to work alone, or in small groups, not watching a whole bunch of young kids with delusions of granduer. He didn't believe that any of them understood how delicate nuclear engineering was. One mistake and you could cause a catastrophe. Nuclear power was not something to be toyed around with. He had snapped at one of his students today when they jokingly suggested a change to an equation. He had turned on the student, locking with his gaze. "And what do you suppose would happen if you did that? One small slip up like that, and boom. Bye bye power plant, and good bye anyone within six miles of the plant. Not to mention the fallout. Do not toy with nuclear power, it is a very delicate matter, that most of you probably don't comprehend." He had turned away, and the bell rang. Now here he was, alone, brooding. He sighed, his shoulders slumping. Who was he kidding? He wasn't a teacher, he was a scientist. He wasn't meant to be cooped up in a classroom, babysitting. He should be out trying to better the world, making the energy more efficient. He wouldn't stay here, he would have to find a new job at the end of the year. He just couldn't stand teaching, it wasn't him. He stood up and looked out across the sea of desks before him. He remembered when he had been sitting there, being lectured about the danger of nuclear power. He had been dedicated to his path, but these students of his, they were, impossible. At years end, the school would need to find a new professor. He would let someone else handle these kids. He sat back down as another bell went off. He leaned back in his chair, silent, and thinking...

Jin Huang - Good job. You definetely got a feel for how the character was by reading that post. However, I do want to tell you that it was a bit of a let down that I had no idea what your character looked like by the time I finished. Also, keep formatting in mind - do not jumble your entire post into one long paragraph. It tends to make people dissinterested. Paragraphs are your friend. :) Keep those things in mind from now on, okay? ACCEPTED

Sang-Hee- You're nearing middle aged, and still not married. You find yourself developing a connection with the best friend of one of your worst enemies, who has been dead for years. What do you think? Do you initiate something, or stay single? Remember, only use that one character - no others. Dig deep into your character's pshyce and don't just scratch the surface.

He clapped his cell phone shut with shaking fingers.

Gen... What was she thinking?

Adam couldn't imagine that she was trying to deceive him. Genevieve had never been the sly type, never intentionally anyways, which made it all the more surprising back in high school when she and that fool Jenson started dating. It wasn't the first time Adam's mind went back to his teenager days, but it was occurring more and more frequently now that Gen had shown back up.

And it sounded strange, but... For some reason, he kept thinking about her. She'd been a cheerleader back in high school, fitting nearly every stereotype while she was at it. She was tall, gorgeous, busty, nice hips without a muffin top (usually). But she started out as a cheerleader to cheer, which was most shocking. Adam supposed nobody had really noticed her lack of gossiping during freshman year, the way she primped to match and not to show off, the passion in her cheering and not in jumping high enough to let the horny front-row preteens see up that little frumpy skirt. But they'd been acquaintances since grade school (God, was it that long ago? Jesus, he was getting old...) and Adam knew her real intentions, even though he never really got to know her. That is, before she started dating.

So how did big-shot football jock Carter Jenson happen to land one of the most innocent girls in the school? Two things were for certain: Jenson definitely didn't like her for her personality, and she wasn't very innocent anymore after that one football game... Ever since then, she was just a regular cheer bitch. She even went out of her way to make fun of... well, everyone. But that's how high school goes, right?

His cell rang again, interrupting his thoughts. The caller ID didn't recognize the number. Probably another business transaction waiting to happen. He put it on silent without rejecting the call, and then slid it across his desk again, sighing heavily. Such was his life.

Ever since he started following his father's footsteps in business, his life was smooth sailing. Relationships weren't a big deal, not that he'd had any time. The only hiccup was Jenson, coming back again and again. He'd gotten a full ride scholarship for somehow staying clean through his football career (Adam knew personally of a few extremely drunken parties, just saying) but went into business for some reason. Adam had his father's influence, but still had a lot to learn, and with Jenson working under the same company... Hell, life was a nightmare for a little while. Adam couldn't describe how much he absolutely loathed the bastard. It was just like high school all over again, with Jenson kicking into Adam's asshole half the time.

And now here was Genevieve, another reminder of those four long, dark years. Sure Jenson and Gen had split beginning of senior year. But she was allied by then, a permanent bitch despite her lack of, uh, "personal relations". Thankfully, they'd all gone their separate ways - bullies to different colleges, brainiac (not that Adam was always totally humble) to the university. He pushed away from his desk, spinning towards the huge window of his proportionately large office. Clouds littered the humid summer sky, occasionally becoming shade for the hot sun. He found it hard to breathe without sighing, and propped his elbows on his thighs to massage his temple.

Jenson was long since dead - drunk driving accident. Go figure. So why was his high-school sweetheart coming back to haunt the same company both he and Adam worked at? She was the new secretary, but her overseer was inquiring around in order to promote her to assistant manager of advertising, considering her fantastic graphic design skills.

He'd just hung up with a fellow member of the executive board, who'd just confirmed the time for tomorrow's lunch meeting (the guy had called it a "date", little bastard). Incidentally, Adam was invited. He leaned back in his chair, a hand covering his eyes. He was far too rational to believe that hiding was a proper solution, but for this very moment he couldn't help it.

She was different. He didn't think she remembered him, but it was hard to remember a girl like her. She was more... herself now. She wasn't a bleach blonde anymore; instead, she'd let her natural brunette show, and she occasionally wore reading glasses. They say old habits die hard (same thing with grudges, Adam supposed) but maybe Gen hadn't had that problem. Her words were precise, tactful, polite. No more of the bullying he'd endured from her ex, his late rival. In fact, if he hadn't recognized her name (and those startling green eyes) he might not have recognized her at all.

He turned back to his desk and rubbed his chin, feeling five-o-clock shadow. The rest of the caffeine from today's lunch had left his system in a recent bathroom break, and he could feel a long day's weariness tugging at his eyelids. He imagined that he probably looked like hell. He felt like it too.

He actually... He felt attracted to her. It was a conspiracy, he swore, but... They saw each other on a regular basis. Whether it was in passing, a shy "hi" coming from barely parted lips on her side, or on the elevator, though her cubicle was only on the 5th floor, they always managed to cross paths. And was it just him, or did she go out of her way to be nice to him? Just this morning she'd called his name (or title, rather, they weren't on a first-name basis quite yet) and caught up to him, eyes sparkling as she asked if he wanted a bagel, they had extra.

It was weird, but his suspicion was fading after only a few weeks. Maybe high school really was over. But could he betray his own logical reasoning? It's what got him this far. He wasn't particularly interested in a relationship with any other woman, but there were clearly other options. He wasn't the greatest-looking, he would admit, but he wasn't too bad off. There was Linda, a petite little lady with Shirley Temple tresses, but they only talked occasionally and he didn't find himself particularly attracted to her. He had a creeping sort of paranoia that those leather boots she typically wore weren't just for fashion... Okay, Linda was definitely a no-go. Maybe Bethany? He was entirely over racial differences, being bi-racial himself (part Caucasian, part Indian, thanks very much - Bethany was fully African-American as far as he knew) but that woman had soul. She wasn't afraid to flirt with him (or anyone else) and she was certainly well-endowed...

Still. Adam wasn't the most optimistic with relationships. He hadn't gone on an actual date with a woman for about three years, ever since he'd gotten his most recent promotion. He'd never taken a woman to his apartment. It wasn't that he had commitment issues (did he? The idea made him flinch) he just wasn't interested. The closest time was in college, when he was studying with his lab partner, and even then he'd never really felt any emotional or physical attraction to anyone in a long time.

Except for now.

Wait! What was he doing? He punched his desk in agitation. They were talking about business, not relationships. It was just a simple meeting, an interview of sorts, just to see how well she would perform under the eye of a potential new boss. It was no big deal. Right?

But Adam knew he had lost. He couldn't forget that eager gleam in her eyes, the genuine happiness that she'd gotten when he let himself smile at her, give her an assuring "yeah". He hadn't lost his cool around her, since he'd had no reason to. But now he couldn't help but admit she was cute, both in personality and looks, and the idea of one of her tiny little smiles made his heart pound. Hell, he'd just HULK SMASHed his desk thinking about her, being unnerved by her, wondering what to do regarding her.

Okay, it was settled. He wasn't just going to give up, no way. But... He couldn't approach her now. Not so close to her promotion. It would be a useful springboard either way, though. Once the board made a decision, which would, regrettably, be a few long weeks away, then he could make a move, a nice subtle one. If she got the promotion (which would be excellent, for her) then he might invite her to dinner to celebrate, his treat. If she didn't get it, though it was extremely unlikely, he could invite her grab a cup of coffee, try to console her. He knew he was taking advantage of her...

But the more he thought about her, the more he convinced himself that this... this could work. He'd have to wait about a month, one long, impossible month, no longer just for her, who was getting the promotion in the first place. Maybe... Maybe he could let go of the old grudge. Maybe he could forget about damn Jenson, who went and stole Gen's innocence from her. Maybe he could make a conscious effort to be kinder to her, to get to know her a little bit. He'd need to be subtle, of course, but he'd still do it.

Yes... This could work.

Sang-Hee- Well, I must say, I'm impressed. You're a talented writer, and I like the length of your post. You do a good job of getting his feelings across about the whole situation, and completely realistic, as far as I'm concerned. Great job. ACCEPTED
