I agree with almost everyone who has posted. The only reason people can bend the sub-styles is because they were born around it, and, as Lu Zong said, is the only thing they could bend. I don't think it matters what you call it. Earthbending is NOT a style, it is what Earthebenders do. Sandbending, Mudbending, and Rockbending, are styles, not what Sandbenders, Mudbenders, and Rockbenders do. All the different types of Earthbenders can bend anything composed of Earth, but they will have trouble with the other types of styles.

Indeed. The substyles of bending are like the substyles of martial arts. We know that there are three styles of waterbending. I would be willing to bet that there are different styles of air bending for each temple. The firenation is the only execption I see to the sub styles. The fire nation isn't that big to start with.

Yea you know what, I think that is pretty plausible. The only thing I kind of see in sub styles is probably that in the North the winds are wilder and more torrential so the Northern style would be a little more focused on offense and in the south the winds are softer and so the style mimicks this. Other than that I can't see anything that would differ the two.

I get what he is saying. It is different variations of the same style. Like the different kinds of Kung Fu. Different to each other but have the same core elements.
