Plot Update 10 March 2021

A year has passed since Fire Lord Zuko ascended the throne, and it seems like trouble is brewing between the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom once more. The Fire Lord and the Avatar began the Harmony Restoration Movement to restore the Fire Nation Colonies to their pre-war state by bringing any Fire Nation nationals back home, but for many of the citizens — of mixed Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom … Read more ›

you see that karma level of yours? You get a -1.

reasons: you have no proof. of the metal bending. I'm a bit slow on the whole show and what things show up because i don't watch the episodes on TV i get them from a website. Anyway as far as i know. IF toph could metal bend then the drill episode was completely pointless and toph could of just toppled it single handily.

Also you post is WAY under 200 chars or even 3 lines....

I really don't care about karma level... Toph did it in today's episode. She concentrated on the rock in the metal and used it to bend. She did that and then kicked the asses of those two earhbenders that had captured her. She owns now.... She's going to master metal bending and then she'll be the best bender ever ;D

No way.... I didn't see the episode but if your right then I'll be damned.... I just hope that it doesn't get abused on the site or in the show if it is right. But I have to see it myself inorder to actuelly believe you. But till then I'll keep an open mind. :)

that's just redundant. That practically undermines the idea of the 'avatar'

Now toph can just simply walk towards the fire nation any ships that come near she just crumples them. Breaks through blockade. go straight into fire nation defeats all fire nation soldiers since most of them have METAL suits for armor. Toph wrecks havok and thats the end.

Where I am it is on now and Toph was trapped in a metal case. She kept hitting it in different point, trying to concentrate enough rock I suppose, and then she punched a huge dent in it! She created a huge hole and then later locked the two kidnappers into their own casing that they had made for her. You really have to see this episode. SEASON FINALE!!!

-Shikimori :D

Actually, she has to touch it to be able to bend it. She can't bend it unless she comes in contact with the metal. She has to literally grab the metal and slam it together to get it to move. lol

Also, Takano... You shouldn't "Smite me" jsut because you haven't been keeping up to date with the episodes. It's not my fault you haven't seen it yet and I think you owe me an apology just for being so rude.

i don't owe you an apology. i stated you didn't back it up and your post was under 200 characters.

Your post had no details what so ever and even worse you planned for people that haven't seen it to believe you when metal bending has been a debate for a while now.

Back to topic -_-;
The touch factor is where i stand corrected, but i will get back to you on this AFTER i have seen it first had to fully seen exactly what she has done. Also for the record metal cages don't have "rocks" in them. just thought i'd point that out. most of them are refined iron ores where the rock is usually melted out of the ore

When I said rocks I meant the refined ores =_=;;; I was watching the episode at the time so I posted really quickly. Also, the karma -1 was unneccessary. I don't care what the karma says I just care WHY you did it. You said you did it because I didn't back up what I said. I wanted to see what people said before I started telling them how. Some people don't like SEEING spoilers as they go into a thread... =_=;;;

Usually when people make a fault in judgement and other people end up paying for it, they apologize. Not apologizing is just proving all the more how rude you were.

Well Joushouryuu Shikimori as you yourself answered, bending metal is only possible when the metal has not been smelted. It is even explained on Nick.com the Firenation smelts all impurities out of the metal to make sure that earthbenders don't break their metal. So the reason Toph did it was that the metal used on her was most likely not smelted. In other words they don't bend the metal but move the earth within the metal.

Well this is a slap in the face for any of my attempted theories.

So it looks like it really is possible for Earth benders to bend metal. But it seems that dealing with metal is a derivative of earth bending, just like Lightning is a derivative of Fire bending.

Now I don't think Toph will suddenly have the ability to wave her hands around and bend metal at ease...just like lightning in firebending, it seems that bending metal takes careful precision and focus.

And the reason Toph made the discovery so easy (besides her obvious circumstance of trying to get out) she's a master of neutral jing...feeling and listening for the right points and movements and such.

I doubt that it would be possible for anyone to learn metal bending without direct training from her. It was in fact her ability of sight without sight that allowed her to discover her latent ability to bend metals along with earth. She didn't make it easily, she struggled with it for a long time... nearly the whole day.

It would make sense that it was an advancement of earth like lightning is for fire :D

Okay to state as an ending point of keeping my neutrality on things. And remain inquisitive instead of contradictory

1) basing off of Shio's post it was you that said "bending metal is only possible when the metal has not been smelted" (refering to Shio) I have not taken the time look up if you said it or not and if you didn't well then thats a reason to ask for forgiveness.

2) Secondly if you have an edit i would probably notice it. I'm not exactly searching for an arguement unless it contradicts my beliefs or current mind set on a topic.

To kyro:
Don't get me wrong or anything, but i thought Neutral Jin was the one where you do nothing. IF i remember correctly. Positive is offensive, Negative is Defensive and neutral is do nothing. if im wrong then correct me please.

This is a type of bending that only Toph is able to do. She is able to do it because in metal there is always a trace amount of Earth. Usually the amount of earth still in metal is so small that it's undetectable even by the best Earthbenders. But Toph is better than the best Earthbenders — maybe it's because she is blind and has always used the Earth to see — or maybe it's just because she is that awesome.

I found this on the Official Nick site that states basically what I said. So whoever said it was because she was blind beautiful guess.

No, you are absolutely correct.
But the whole point of mastering Neutral Jin isn't to do nothing...it's to do nothing (stand your ground) to figure out when it is the best moment to make your move (whether it'd be defensive or offensive).

My point in mentioning Toph to be a master at neutral jin is because she senses and anaylzes the scene around her. When she was in the cage, it showed a bit of her insight as she was feeling and punching the metal around her to see how it reacted and managed to figure the kinks. (Lack of a better phrase).

Im not so sure that metal bending is simply the bending of earth particles in the steel cage. You can't take everything that they say on Nick.com as fact (for one I don't recall the Guru ever calling Aang an "emotional timebomb," but I always could have been away from the screne at that moment), the true information is in the show and from the mouth of the creator of the series.

If you'd remember the changes the show took from Aang and the Guru to Toph fighting her way out of the metal box, the Guru said something to the effect that metal is just a purified varient of earth. While this might not be exactly true in real life, when has a cartoon ever been absolutely concerned with sticking to the bare facts o.O? While it seemed in today's episode that she was focusing on particles in the metal at the time of her bending, I see no reason that she won't be bending it as efficiently as Azula bends lightning.

(Also, while it seems true that she needs to be in contact with the metal to bend it, isn't that the truth with earth bending in general?)

Vanga, you are incorrect that you must be incontact with the earth. Good ol' Boomi had shown us that. He was covered in a box with only his head sticking out so that he wouldn't earthbend. Well he couls still earthbend by simply nodding his head. YAY BOOMI!

I haven't seen the finale so please don't post anything in this thread that referes to it. But thats what the site say and even in the earthbending place it talks about firebenders exploiting that inability for most to bend earth by smelting it and getting rid of its impurities.

@yoshiro - You are correct, I forgot about that incident. Apparently master benders in the field of earth are able to control their element without making contact on the ground, but for the most part I believe this is an impossibility for lesser benders, hence why they need such strong stances. It's for moving such a tough element.

@shio - Sorry about that, I'll try to mark anything from today's episode with a *Spoiler* warning.

Moving on, remember that Nickelodian doesn't make the show, it just airs it. That means that they are by no means the final authority on the subject, they just put down what they can learn (and most of it is probably opinionated). Its the same as Wikipedia, in which the members can read all the official documentation that they want to add to their articles, but there are bound to be a few flaws from time to time and one must pick those out.

Also, as I said in my last post (and this was where the *spoiler* was, though the topic of this thread is a spoiler in itself), the Guru stated that metal is a purified form of earth, as the firebender that you speak of said the metal was purified so that earth bending wouldn't effect it. That doesn't mean that it can't be bended, but simply that it can't be done so by normal earth benders. The bending of metal could simply be the earth bender's variation of a fire bender's lightning attacks (Note: Lightning isn't fire, but plasma, so its basically the same as saying that metal isn't earth in real life).

Actually lightning isn't plasma, it's electricity...but electricity at an extreme scale. Because lightning is so hot (4-5 times hotter than the sun's surface) any air particles in contact to the discharge heat up into plasma.

Anyway, to the subject, this really makes me wonder if Bumi has already figured out bending metal. (Which is possible since he's the type of person to "open his brain to the possiblities).
