Hello good gentlemen. I am sure that most of us have seen Iroh shoot lightening when it came from Azula near the begining of the book of earth and when he explained to Zuko about how he did it.
This makes me wonder.... What other things could one do if other benders learnedother nations about how to bend *outside* their element?
Ideas maybe?

there have been multiple threads about this and the answer is no but you can incorporate the fighting styles of the other elements into your own allowing one to know thy enemy.

I think you misunderstand me. What i mean by bending outside your element is learning from other styles to develope different things for whatever bending style you already possess. Example: Iroh shooting azulas lightening from simply grabing her arm. and pointing up at the sky. From what Iroh said much later he had developed a technic from hanging out with water benders sorta. The technic was to move the lightening with the flow of chakra, passing near the heart. I don't mean actually bending water when your a firebender already.

I know that waterbenders can use their healing powers and they can make ice by bending the water to their will. Is that in the least bit helpful to your question? And I think that some earthbenders can bend sand if I am not mistaken. Air? They can run faster...I think, but that is all I can think of at the moment. I hope this helps...

What he means is the mixing of different cores of the elements
example: iroh after studying the waterbenders (waterbending based of tai chi) learned that you can use your chi similar to water since tai chi is based on smoothness and flow. Hes talking about that kind of stuff.
Generally as far as i know i dont think there will be any other combinations like that least ones that i can think of.
Airbenders already have a bit of a tai chi feel to them and hang gar is pretty much the exact opposite of tai chi if the earthbenders are dipicting the martial arts which i am unfamiliar with

Yes Hieu. Thats what I mean. I would like people to give me more ideas for use of chi. Iroh uses the flow of chi to blast lightening away from himself to someone else if lightening was used against him. I think that their should be more combinations aside from just fire and water. Wheres everyones 2 cents? Please supply me with some ideas.

Well it's really difficult to explain such possiblities since we don't even know the true capabilties of each bending.
Lightning is the only bending we've seen without remote connection to the bending the show relates it to. Water involves water and ice (a form of water) earth involves sand and earth itself air is self explaintory but Lightning where does it come out of fire bending?
It's hard to explain when we don't know all the parts that are involved in the show

Good point Hieu. I guess what we could do is go online and gather what we can about the way chakra and chi work and try to see how each of the bending arts work out with each one. Basically from just looking at the whole thing this is what I come up with.
Earth: Like a rock. Sturdy, strong, and solid.
Fire: Quick and powerful.
Water: Flowing, adaptible, and smooth.
Air: Fast, agile, and hard to touch.

I think lightning comes from the fact that it is a raw form of energy that is unbelievably hot, but this is just an assumption. I read something about this earlier, but I cannot find the site. I might be able to find it later however. I thought wikipedia had it, but it must not be the right site...

Lightning is really part of firebending actually. It may shock you but its true (get it.. ha..ha..)
Like all of us know, the bending styles are based of various forms of kung fu and tai chi.
Earth: Southern Shaolin (Hung Gar)
Fire: Northern Shaolin
Water: Tai Chi Chuan
Air: Ba Gua
Focusing more on Fire: Northern Shaolin, further reading and studying showes that Fire deals with all the forms of ancient Shaolin fighting. 3 major forms are, Chi Kung ( moving energy), Dim Mak (Chi Reversal, death touch), and northn Shaolin (general cover-all term to represtn the hundreds of Kung Fu styles).
Chi Kung: Refer to below
Dim Mak: Ty lee's favorite type of fighting
Northen Shaolin: all firebenders
All three of these forms of northern shaolin involve the breaking or disruption of chi energy.
Chi Kung: moving energy, speration of Yin and Yang (not to be confused with positive and negative energy)
Dim Mak: Literal disruption, or destruction of internal Chi, using the one of the 5 cycles of Destruction, to degrade or destroy chi, causing death
Northern Shaolin Kung Fu: Manipulation of chi its self, basicly using your opponents energies against him.
So, since Iroh said that lightning comes from the seperation of energies, it would only make sense that Fire ( a martial art that does that), be the perfect canidate for the ability.
the only problem i have with what Iroh said, is that there is no such thing as negative energy, just opposite. The Taoist dont believe in negative things =P

Positive and negative energy to me is simply are terms. They are oppisites, used for different reasons. When seperated they form balance. Of course I am going by my experiance in D&D. Their are these two energy types going by the same names. Postive heals, negative hurts. In avatar I think its very different so I think it would be wise to simply look somewhere else than from D&D.

Here's something else for your pondering, Yoshiro, if you were interested in possibilities of other cross-techniques? My newest (and hopefully last) character, Matsuo "Lae" Takumi, is a waterbender who spent nearly all of his bending life with his adopted father, an earthbender. As a result, he does a lot of earth-style things with the water he bends; for instance, he uses the strong consistent motions similar to earthbending in order to bend a block of water out of a stream at Chisai Konoha.

My brother came up with glass bender. I thought of metal bender, or mineral bender. You would collect minerals like copper, zinc, tin, etc. And collect them from the ground, push them together (wile still in the ground), then and push them up and throw it at someone. It would probably hurt alot more if they throw it at your head. Maybe even kill you. But, that bending is my oppinion. Oh, also, the fighting style would be like earth.
For Glass bender, he said that you would have to be near glass...wouldent that be the force if you had to move the glass lol?

FLB, I need to ask you this, for even though what you say is interesting, have you ever seen any glass in the entire avatar world?
Neat Taed Xoa, that interests me greatly, but makes little sesne to me. Sorry but my mind is far more mundane for such things (thinking in general). Maybe you could explain it further?

^^i think he means the same thing i mentioned a few times. Using Water like an earthbender. Earthbenders tend to create a solid object of shear mass to overwhelm correct? Same thing.
in basics: replace the earth in earthbending with water.
MY concept of Earth benders using earth like water is just simply re-directing the earth rapidly. the only flaw in my concept is that most earth benders that move the earth that is suspended in the air is normally touched directly or at extremely close range. Example would be kicking the rock. Though it is probably possible since Boomi pulled his hand near him and the geminite shattered.
Iono thoughts?

Well, if the earth benders redirected the earth like water benders, then they would be able to do such moves as a "earth whip" or something weird like that. It would probably give the earth benders an advantage. And, if water benders could bend like fire benders, then they could use their feet, or other body parts....

Very interesting ideas. I think you may be on to something with this. You know the sand benders? I think they share techniques with air benders but they are earthbenders. What you think?
I like the idea of Firebending and Waterbending coming together in that manner but dunno if it could work.

Too true, the sandbenders can almost be confused with airbenders at first glance. One can only wonder how close the two styles could become. Imagine a 'sand scooter,' heh, or using sand particles to keep a glider afloat as they use it to push their sandbarges. The similarities are interesting, especially when you see that sandbending is so versatile, because it can mimic airbending in some ways and earthbending in others (like the time when they abducted Appa, they used the sand to hold their ground as earthbenders and even waterbenders have been seen doing).

I think there are certain things which are usable in more than one element;
Earth/fire = lava
earth/ water = sludge, like in secret of the fire nation
water/fire = steam?
earth/earth = metal
earth/?? = crystal
earth/air? = sand
fire = lightening
anyone got more?
