Aang took in a deep breath, a cheeky smile appearing on his face. Despite the sky being cloudy and dark, the fresh air brought the young Avatar to life. "Today's gonna be a good day, right Appa?" A loud grunt rumbled behind him as a tongue twice the size of Aang licked him from behind from his feet to the back of his head. Aang laughed, turning to Appa and ruffling his fur. “You haven't seen Katara, have you?” The young boy's head tilted, but his question was merely answered with another grunt.

The airbender looked around. He went over to her sleeping back, finding a small note written out in the dirt nearby.

“Went to get firewood. Go get some supplies while I'm gone. Be back later!”

Aang frowned. He would have loved to go with her. She could have at least told him she was going out. Aang wasn't even sure what they needed. Sending him and Sokka on a supply run didn't seem like the best idea either. He thought little more about it and instead headed to Sokka's sleeping bag. He wasn't too surprised to still see the bulge in the bag. The boy sighed, grabbing a stick and prodding at the bag. "Sokka! Wake up!"

The fire was so warm as he sat slurping a bowl of seaweed noodles next to Gran Gran and Katara. Dad grinned at him from across the fire, and bit into a stick of roasted meat with gusto. He was just about to ask for one when he felt a sharp pain in his back. He turned, trying to see what it was, when it happened again. And again. And agai—

—something was poking him. Sokka cracked open a sleep-and-crud-crusted eye and frowned as he saw nothing but dirt, grass, and rocks. Where—?

It all came rushing back after a few seconds. He yelped, then rolled away from the source of the poking, still in his sleeping roll. Aang looked at him with those wide grey eyes, much too awake and much too chipper for a kid who woke someone out of one of the best dreams in the world.

"I'm awake," he replied flatly, staring up at Aang from the ground. The edges of the sleeping roll were wrapped around his face, and he inched, caterpillar style, towards the remnants of the night's campfire. He blinked the sleep from his eyes, and glanced around the camp blearily.

"Where's Katara?"
