Just curious. What is everyone reading right now?

Currently, I am reading Graduation Day by Joelle Charbonneau. It's the third book in a series called The Testing, about the path to the University in a post-apocalyptic world where if you fail, you're never seen again. It's very good. I am also in the middle of re-reading the Harry Potter series, and am on Goblet of Fire at the moment.

I'm not actively reading anything per se, but only because I'm waiting for the next book to come out. I've recently been engrossed in the cozy mystery genre, particularly the Tiffany Black mysteries by A.R. Winters. The general gist is that Tiffany is a casino worker in Vegas whose dream is to become a P.I. and gets way more than she bargained for when she took on her first case as a favour to a friend.

I just finished A Wrinkle in Time, and now am torn between starting a reread of Harry Potter or reading a book called The Scar that I've really been looking forward to. It'll probably end up being Harry Potter. Been way too long since I read those, and rewatching the movies in theaters recently makes me want to go back to them.

Well folks I have been pulled into a dark hole full of darkness and hate. Yes I am reading Dance of Dragons, by George R.R. Martian the fifth book in the Song of Fire and Ice. This series has been consuming me for over a year, and if you know the reading level and the fact that the reading is heavy I have been doing a good job. So if I am able to do 30 pages a day I will be done before the end of the month. So yeah I got a goal. Wish me luck and let us hope that I do not strangle the person that got me into this mess. And I am not saying any names.

Hey, Dance with Dragons is a fantastic book. And one day, hopefully, it'll get an equally fantastic sequel...hopefully.

Don't do it Kanea - take as long as possible. Then you might be lucky and only have to wait a year or two until The Winds of Winter comes out... Unlike some of us who have been waiting like 5... *cries*

I have to say though, interesting how many people are re-reading Harry Potter. After reading the Cursed Child, I had to do it too. Just finished with Deathly Hallows.

But technically that means I'm not reading anything really... I feel like it's time for me to pick up another Stephen King book, but I'm not sure whether to pick one I haven't read, or re-read one of the longer ones like IT or Insomnia again...

Yep, I am one of those people, too. Besides, if she doesn't finish she'll never read the other books I want her to read not to mention she has others too. Must move on at some point, I suppose.

Thanks guys, I so do need to move on from here. Besides I want to re-read the Sleeping Beauty trilogy from Ann Rice, I had brought the next book so I want to read them all in order. And after that I have a long series that Gia has given me on my list as well.

If you discount textbooks and piles of scientific papers for uni related stuff when I remember to pick it up again I've been reading 20,000 leagues under the sea. Prior to that I'd read 'How to Be Dead' which I managed to get through in around a day, and then before that it was Interesting Times from the Discworld series.

Reading poetry. Mary Oliver and WS Merwin. Beautiful free verse. Prepping myself to tackle the somber hardboiled noir mysteries of Reed Farrel Coleman and his titular character, Moe Prager.

Lately I've been reading Stop Walking on Eggshells: Taking Your Life Back When Someone You Care About Has Borderline Personality Disorder by Paul Mason and Randi Kreger. It's interesting to say the least, but I've only been taking in 10-ish page chunks at a time. It's nice to have the perspective of controlling your own behavior around a person with BPD instead of trying to control their behavior, but I'm learning that I had a lot of misconceptions about BPD.

@saypikapika - Many people do, in my experience. I think BPD is a very difficult mental illness to comprehend for neurotypical folks (or even other neuroatypical folks, who don't have BPD or BPD-link symptoms), and is often confused as like... a sort of cross between bipolar disorder and narcissistic personality disorder. I'm glad to hear though that you're reading more about it and what you can do! It sounds like a good read, and I might look into it myself.

I read two books yesterday!

1. Daughters of Dragons by William Andrews.
While I'm a little uncomfortable? wary? that the author is a white man, because of issues like Arthur Gold making mad cash off of romanticised stories of actual people without their consent, this is nevertheless a REALLY good story. It is a historical fiction about the life of a comfort woman during WWII and the aftermath; a Korean woman who was adopted by American parents travelling back to the land of her birth to learn about her birth mother and finding her maternal grandmother instead, who tells young woman her story. (As far as I've been able to research, as well, this narrative was written with the utmost respect and with a lot of research).

A massive, massive, massive trigger warning here for this book. Comfort women were (primarily Korean) Asian women who were forcibly sent to "work camps" during WWII for sex work by the occupying Japanese. There is, as that description should indicate, a lot of violence against women both of a physical and sexual nature. In my opinion, while triggering, most of it was necessary and not played up for shock value. (Note the qualifier of "most"; there are definitely a few scenes I felt could be truncated or left out, but tbh most of it I feel were needed to properly convey, in a narrative, how horrific this was).

If you can handle the above though, I definitely recommend it as a foot in the door to spark an interest in learning about the dark history of comfort women, as while there were thousands upon thousands of women put through this horrific life, only a small handful are still alive and the Japanese government refuses to acknowledge them or the atrocities that were visited upon them by their occupying forces. It is DEFINITELY an R rated book however, for explicit descriptions of the atrocities.

2. The Palace Job (Rogues of the Republic Book 1), Patrick Weekes
While I had some MAJOR reservations since this book's two primary protagonists are black / there's fantasy racism and Weekes is partially responsible for the ... very botched depictions of oppressed peoples in his work on BioWare titles, I feel he really shone here. I am sad he didn't receive a bigger creative lead in Inquisition after reading this novel, honestly, because this was an excellent, excellent book.

Standard fantasy fare, but without the usual damselling or fridging-women-for-manpain. Protagonist is a black woman who gathers a ragtag group of people with Skills and turns it into a little found family while still kicking butt and taking names. I'd give a more thorough synopsis but I can't do so without giving away a couple of the plot twists haha.

Suffice it to say I'm VERY picky about fantasy novels, especially critical over novels with female characters written by men, especially novels with characters of colour written by white folks, and Weekes still hits all the right notes for me.

Well, I have finally started reading Lovecraft. I don't have a ton of time to read, and it's a collection of 20-ish stories so Great Tales of Horror is a huge book, but I'm starting to see why his work was so influential. I've only read two of the stories so far ("Call of Cthulu", of course, and "The Colour from Space"), but I'm halfway through the third, "The Lurking Fear", and it's just as good as the first two! I have to say, I'm almost disappointed that, as a fan of horror fiction, I hadn't read any Lovecraft before.
