Plot Update 10 March 2021

A year has passed since Fire Lord Zuko ascended the throne, and it seems like trouble is brewing between the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom once more. The Fire Lord and the Avatar began the Harmony Restoration Movement to restore the Fire Nation Colonies to their pre-war state by bringing any Fire Nation nationals back home, but for many of the citizens — of mixed Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom … Read more ›

Never once did the thought occur to Yutaka that he could like someone not only proportionate to their hatred of something but because of it. Seeing Ren'ai glow when she did something she loved was wonderful but watching her hate the same thing he did also had it's charm. He was deliriously happy to be uncomfortable together with Ren'ai.
Aside from the envelopes of cash given as gifts and filling up on fancy snacks, Yutaka had no real desire to come either, though seeing the shocked faces of people he knew as he danced with Republic City's most beautiful probender was a check in the plus column.

As Ren'ai danced Yutaka tried his best to fill up on expensive appetizers. Traditionally, the winter solstice celebrations meant lots of meat and this one was no exception. He put a small cube of beef in his mouth he knew to be from an exclusive farm where the cattle were plied with a diet of alcohol and routine massages. Even the food his parents ate was pampered. Yutaka bet that many of his coworkers would line up at a slaughterhouse for the chance to live like that. The thought made him a little sad but it didn't make his food any less tasty.

Throughout the evening Yutaka had been too distracted by his own nerves and by a certain enchanting woman to notice much of the ambience. It was pretty with it's crystal snowflakes and pearl beads of snow cascading down door frames but it was like beautiful paint on a broken vase. He'd much rather have found a restaurant open that night and ate a nice quiet dinner with Ren'ai...quiet until they debated what to do for the rest of the evening.
Unlike the dancing firebender Yutaka didn't consider this party to be beautiful inside and out. It looked nice but it was more of an opportunity for his parents to show off rather than an actual celebration.

The trappings of the wealthy seemed like something Yutaka couldn't live without at one time and now they made him slightly ill. He knew that it was no coincidence that he started missing his old life less once Ren'ai entered into the picture.
Once she stopped dancing Yutaka knew it would take an industrial crew to blast the smile off of his face.
"I may not say this enough but...you're really incredible. Let's go find your brother and go throw stuff at each other. I already have my gear packed in the trunk."
Taking training gear to a fancy party was like taking clean clothes for painting...changing into them was a forgone conclusion.

Ren’ai blushed as Yutaka told her she was incredible. “You may mentioned it before,” she told him, a smile crossing her lips, “but no girl ever tires of hearing that.” The Firebender thought that he was pretty great himself, too. It was a bit embarrassing to hear the compliments, but she loved the fact that he thought so highly of her to keep repeating them. She didn’t necessarily agree that she was as incredible as he said she was, but it was great to her. “I agree, though, let’s find my brother.” However, it would seem that Ryouko had the same idea she had, because he suddenly appeared next to them, commenting that there was no need to go looking for them. Then, her oldest brother reminded her that she had promised him a dance. “I remember, why do I think I was looking for you?”

The dance only lasted one song, as Ryouko was no better than she was. Neither was bad enough to step on each other’s toes or anything, thankfully. When all was said and done, he hugged her, commenting that he and Amai were leaving to go pick up their toddler. “Nice excuse to leave,” Ren’ai said, smirking up at him. He returned her smirk, but commented that he had no idea what she was talking about. “Of course not,” the dark-haired young woman said, but she left it at that and went back to her boyfriend. “I’m ready if you are.” They made their way down to his car, which then began to take them towards the training area. She thought it was amusing that he had brought training gear to high-class party. Sure, he hadn’t brought it inside. Now that would have been funny.

Once they arrived at their destination, the moment that Ren’ai got out of the car, she took her clip out of her hair, letting it fall down her back. Then, once they got to the place where they would be training, she kicked off her shoes, setting them where she would remember where they were, and set her clip on top. That way, she’d have it all together and remember where they were. Not that she could replace either one of them, but she had so much hair that it was hard to find a good one that fit all of her hair. And she liked those shoes a lot, but she couldn’t Firebend properly in them. Yutaka would have enough of an advantage with her in a dress. He didn’t need her in those shoes, too. Sure, they weren’t heels or anything, but still… too nice to Firebend in. She started stretching and warming up as best as she could in a dress, finding it very restricting. This ought to be fun, she told herself.

Once she decided that it was as good as it was good was going to get, Ren’ai turned to Yutaka and smiled. “Ready to lose?” It was more confident than she felt right now. She had never tried this in a dress before, so the results could be… rather disastrous – or hilarious, depending on your point of view. Her boyfriend may not been a trained Probender like her – far from it – but he was also not in a dress. She had no idea how well this was going to go for her. Oh, well, all in fun, right?

Butterflies and beef left Yutaka's stomach in a state where he was certain that if he attempted any action more strenuous than sitting down he would projectile vomit. He spent the ride to the training center with his forehead pressed against the cool window of his parents' satomobile feeling a little queasy.
Then Ren'ai took the clip out of her hair and suddenly Yutaka felt able to bend.
It was like a cliche in plays where the mousy, bespectacled librarian let her hair down and went from plain to beautiful. The difference was that to Yutaka Ren'ai went from beautiful to breath-taking goddess worthy of worship and song.

Yutaka paid for two matches to the clerk who looked at the well-dressed couple with an amused smile.
It was a slow time, to Yutaka's great relief and the mens' locker room was blissfully empty. Seeing men parading amount naked with their chiseled muscles and greater bending experience did the flabby city worker's self-esteem no favors. He opened the locker where he was to keep his clothes and looked in the mirror inside of the door.
"You lost fifteen pounds. You're doing good. Don't get discouraged."
It was a great help that he had women in his life that would light a fire under him, sometimes literally, when he felt like slacking off.

The "new" bending gear Yutaka purchased months ago looked like it might have been through more rebirths than the Avatar. Black tape covered tears in the dark gray torso armor as well as his gloves. The twin dragons of clumsiness and practicing against firebenders who were on a professional level were not kind to used sporting goods. Mentally, Yutaka shopped for and purchased new bending equipment with his newly attained yuans. Everything except for the green belt he wore to represent his element was worn out, including the man inside.

Once in the practice arena Yutaka went through his mental checklist to make sure he had everything he needed. Helmet. Pads. His stomach was feeling fine for a second until he saw Ren'ai stretching in her dress, then it got nervous again.
"Ready to lose?"
Yutaka gave a exaggerated smirk of arrogance. "Are you ready to win with an ounce of grace?"
He felt ready. Padded, calm, stretched, then in a cold sweat when he remembered he forgot to stretch and warm up.

Yutaka looked down at the bending disks and sighed as he lowered himself into the horse stance, the most basic form of all of bending as well as the most vulnerable. He slowly slid his right foot a quarter-circle until only his left side was facing his opponent and girlfriend. From there he raised to stand on the balls of his feet and raised his fists in front of his face.
Three successive punches launched three separate earth disks at Ren'ai but only one seemed to be anywhere remotely near her.

As Yutaka asked her if she was ready to lose with ‘an ounce of grace’, Ren’ai just smirked. She was not a graceful sportswoman as far as attitude went – win or lose. Besides, she probably wasn’t going to lose this anyway. Probably… the Firebender wasn’t as confident as usually was. She didn’t plan on telling him that any time soon. She was a professional-level Probender, so she could manage to do one practice session with a novice in a dress. The more she thought that to herself, the more ridiculous it sounded to her. She was Probending a dress! The dark-haired young woman got an image of her doing an actual match in a dress and had to stop herself from laughing out loud or looking she was amused at all. Yutaka would certainly wonder, and she didn’t want him to think that it was because of him. It wasn’t at all.

Ren’ai did enjoy hearing the arrogance, which was kind of ironic since that’s what had originally turned her off to him in the first place. How things change, she thought to herself. The Firebender shook the thoughts out of her head, and brought her mind back into the task at hand. She was already in the “zone”, so to speak, so she barely registered that he hadn’t warmed up – not enough to say anything. She probably would remember later, depending on what happened. At the moment, she wanted to concentrate on the match, and the brief, fleeting thought that her boyfriend hadn’t warmed up – which was actually dangerous – was pushed away. She would probably feel guilty later, but for right now, she was just glad to be bending and not at that stupid party.

Ren’ai let Yutaka make the first move. He sent three disks towards her – or more precisely, he sent one towards her, with the other two headed for… well, she honestly wasn’t sure where he had intended to shoot them. A smirk crossed the dark-haired young woman’s face as she easily sidestepped the only one that was anywhere near her. “Friendly reminder,” she said, “aiming is always helpful.” She kept her tone of voice light and teasing. She wanted him to get better – not feel bad because he hadn’t shot two of the disks near her. He had to know this was all in good fun, right? This was different than training with her best friend, Yuri – ironically, also an Earthbender. Luckily, her dress was not overly tight, but tight enough that kicking – which she was fond of doing in fights – was going to be tricky. She decided to start of easy, so if she ripped her dress it would happen later. She sent three rapid punches his way.

Three months prior Yutaka would not have taken Airi's teasing well. In that time he'd grown a little thicker of skin. It helped that he had the excuse that he trained with people on a much higher level than himself. He found that his self-deprecating sense of humor was something of an asset in times of stress during training.
He made a loud grunt after the fireballs Ren'ai sent his way knocked him back into a different zone. He wasn't particularly proud of being knocked back so early but not instinctively curling up in a ball every time a fireball came his way was something he took pride in.
"Next thing you know you'll be telling me to dodge."

Lacking any mentorship in the earth bending aspect of pro bending, Yutaka was forced to be his own tutor and discovered he had a talent for neither teaching nor learning. That made what little he did learn on his own all the more worthy of his pride.
Once more Yutaka launched three disks his girlfriend's way and once more two were off-target. It was always the second one that was accurate. It took the first disk to get him acclimated to the relative positions of him and his opponent which made the second one accurate. The third disk, however, suffered from him over thinking. There were physical problems with his first disk and mental ones with his third.

Last week, while on break Yutaka was practicing his bending throwing rocks at a spot on a wall in an abandoned building he was inspecting. There, he thought of Ren'ai and her penchant for kicks and tried the same. He couldn't hit his target but the sound of it banging against the wall was louder. He had a power move now...inaccurate as it was. He just had no idea if he could string it together with his ever-present three-punch combo.
Yutaka pressed down on the ball of his right foot and raised the a fourth bending disk to shin height and kicked it towards Ren'ai with his left.
One of his co-workers suggested naming his attacks like a hero from a wuxia pulp novel. Naturally, Yutaka dismissed this idea as childish but named his attack anyway.
To his chagrin the best he could think of was:
"My left foot!"
Even more embarrassing was calling out his attack's name. He swore he would not do that.

Ren’ai smirked as Yutaka made a quip about her telling him to dodge next time. “Well, dodging’s good, too,” was all she settled on saying as she prepared for his next attack. She had managed to knock him back, though – not that she was surprised. He went to attack her again, and just like the time before, the second disk hit. The first and the third both went too wide, and weren’t anywhere near her. She wondered why that was. She’d never asked before. Was it just because of the fact that he was a novice, and were there are other things at fault? The dark-haired young woman decided to shake those thoughts out of her head, and concentrate on the sparring match with her boyfriend.

Ren’ai had never thought to suggest Yutaka getting help from Yuri, but surely if he wanted it, he would have asked. Was it weird to get help from your girlfriend’s best friend? She didn’t think so, but he knew full well that Yuri was an Earthbender. The Firebender was about to attack when he sent another attack at her. He was a bit surprised. He sent towards her shins, and then decided for some reason to yell out what foot he’d used. She gave him a weird look, but decided not to respond – at least for the time being. She might ask him later what in the world had possessed him to do that. Was he trying to name his attack or something? How did that work when you used your limbs to attack? It was bending after all.

Ren’ai avoided the fourth disk and got back into position. She sent two more fire punches his way, one towards his shoulder and the other towards his chest. She was fond of kicking, so she couldn’t stop herself from brining her front leg up and kicking it out at him, sending another fireball towards him – this time towards his stomach. She had found, though, that upon lifting her leg, the fabric of her dress tightened around her legs. The third attack had originally been aimed for this chest, but that hadn’t worked. With that, the Firebender got back into defensive position, ready to dodge his next attack. At least he’d taken her by surprise – even if only a little bit. It was something. He had changed up his attack, so that was good. She would tell him later.

Yutaka winced as if in actual physical pain when his kick sent his disk flying toward Ren'ai's shin.
"Sorry, sorry, sorry. I-"
Before he could fully explain three fireballs sailed his way. A multitude of thoughts ran through his mind:
I'm glad that didn't hit her.
I hope she forgive me for that.
I need to invest in some safety disks for when I practice with Airi

The last thought was that if Ren'ai had chosen to change into something more appropriate that he would not have gotten to see so much of her legs when she kicked at him.

Through that torrent of self-consciousness and a appreciation for the firebender's form there was no time for Yutaka to think about dodging. Rather than spend precious fractions of a second thinking about dodging Yutaka instinctively turned his side toward his opponent/girlfriend and awkwardly twisted out of the way.
He immediately regretted contorting his body into such an odd position but was pleased to feel the impact of only one fireball hit his torso.
He smiled and almost bellowed some sort of exclamation of victory but his voice was drowned out by the buzzer. In turning to the side he had stepped over the line of his zone. A heavy sigh emerged and the stepped backwards into the final zone of the practice arena.

In normal matches there were not breaks for chatter between points but it was a habit he developed in his training with Airi. Besides, he still hadn't the stamina for continuous exertion.
Such a heavy setback combined with so much pride for dodging two out of three consecutive attacks made Yutaka both grit his teeth and smile.
"This is unbelievably frustrating but a lot of fun." He looked down at the floor and saw that if they were in an actual arena he would be in the last zone and primed for a fall into the water.
He scratched his chin and grunted.
"I have a move in mind. Um, it's kind of a surprise attack so, you know, try to look surprised."
From experience Yutaka knew that experimenting amateur's could cause a lot of damage, hence the warning.

Quickly, the timid earthbender placed the ball of his right foot on the ground and then slammed down his heel bringing a single earth disk up to shoulder level. He leaned forward with what looked like a powerful straight punch but missed the disk entirel to throw off anyone timing his punches and bended the disk by contacting it with his elbow and shot it towards Ren'ai's chest.
An elbow blow hidden within a punch which he hoped would be harder for his opponent to time and dodge.

Ren’ai thought it was sweet when Yutaka apologized for getting a good shot in. Well, he hadn’t hit her, but he had given her a bit of surprise. “Don’t be sorry,” she told him. “We’re sparring, remember? It’s all fair.” Well, there certain things that they weren’t allowed to do to each other by Probending Rules, but the dark-haired young woman knew that her boyfriend would know what she meant. Besides, he hadn’t hit her. One on one, it was hard for her not to dodge. Yuri got in good shots, but her Earthbending best friend was more accurate and quicker. That was simply a product of being a professional-level athlete. Yutaka was a novice, and not expected to be at the same level. He was steadily improving, though, and it showed. He’d never be professional level, of course, but that wasn’t the point of why he was doing it. He was getting in shape slowly but surely – and she assumed that part of it had to do it with her, as well.

Ren’ai was glad to see that he’d dodged her attacks. Though the Firebender typically got in “match mode” so to speak, and thought little about her opponent’s safety, it was always in the back of her mind when she was sparring with Yutaka. She knew their skill levels were different, so she always made sure and took it a bit easy on him. It was just as much for her benefit as it was for his. The dark-haired young woman would never forgive herself if something happened because she was being overzealous. She noticed one of her fireballs hit. She was caught between pride at her skill, such that it was at the moment, and guilt for actually successfully hitting her boyfriend in the chest with a fireball. He seemed pleased that he had dodged most of her attacks – that is until he stepped over the zone line. She couldn’t help but smirk at him a little for that. It happened in actual matches, too – even to her, not that she’d admit it, of course, because… well, that would be admitting that she had failed.

As always, Yutaka took a break to talk. Ren’ai honestly thought it was weird because it was hard for her to go in and out between “match mode” and then her normal self. She did it for him, of course, but this was not his forte, so to speak. He needed time in between hits, and couldn’t go full out like she could for so long. She understood that – well, at least in theory. She didn’t want him get hurt or anything because he thought that he had to keep up with her, so the Firebender tried to make sure that such a situation never happened. “Yes, it is,” she agreed when he told her it was frustrating but fun. “It’s addicting.” At least it was her to, anyway, and he’d understand that. The next thing he did caused the dark-haired young woman to smile as she stifled a laugh. “You’re not supposed to warn me about a surprise attack… that’s the whole point of it being a surprise attack.” She had a slight teasing note to her voice.

Ren’ai knew why he warned her – he was a novice, and trying something that didn’t work could cause adverse effects. She was not stupid, but she would still tease him a little for warning her every now and again. Getting back to position, she waited for the attack to come that she now knew was coming. At first, the Firebender was a tad confused. It seemed like a straight punch, until he missed. She kept her face even, a habit from actual Probending practice and matches. Subconsciously, she eased up a bit, but only a bit since she knew something else had to be coming. That is until she noticed that Yutaka had missed on purpose to throw her off, sending her the disk by way of a hidden elbow shot. Her eyes widened a little bit in surprise, and she hurried to move out of the way. That had actually been a genuinely good shot. “That was good,” she told him, “honestly. If you hadn’t of warned me, you may have actually been close to getting me.”

Ren’ai was typically a very fast, both in dodging and attacking. However, she would deliver a compliment when it was well deserved. The Firebender knew that it was her turn to attack, and she almost thought about sending a blast towards his feet, but decided against it. She settled on turning her body to the side, switching her weight to her back foot and simultaneously lifting her front leg and kicking at his chest. Once she set her foot down, she wanted to swing her back leg around, but as she tried, she didn’t get the right from back leg, and it ended up being a bit slower than her typical quick paced moves. It also went towards his legs, which was not the intended target. Annoyance flashed across her face as she got back into position, and sent a fire punch towards him. Damn dress...

Getting a compliment from Ren'ai was ecstacy for Yutaka but getting one about his bending was something even beyond that. He couldn't speak due to the lump developing in his throat so instead he smiled and raised his hand in a silent bid of thanks.
Something as simple and mundane as: "Thank you, you're a goddess" seemed so inadequate it was almost laughable.
The best way Yutaka knew to repay the compliment was to try harder at the sport Ren'ai loved.

The flames emanating from the kicks Ren'ai aimed at him seemed off. Not smooth, not intense, not Ren'ai. It was like watching a master of the brush finger paint.
The fact that the flames came towards his legs scared him somewhat.
Are mistakes this scary? What must it be like for Ren'ai and Airi to bend against me?
As he dodged Yutaka's left foot brushed against the end the lines marking the end of the final zone. In an actual match his foot would have swiped through the open air as a prelude to his fall but to his surprise he regained his balance.
That minor victory was short-lived as another fireball, delivered via punch soared towards his chest hitting him dead on. It wasn't the impact, it was that primal fear of fire that drove him back. It was fine for lighting his cigarettes but when it was directed towards his face fire was something else entirely.

He sighed when he looked down and saw that if he was over the line.
A sigh couldn't help but be uttered and the sheer amount of disappointment he felt was a surprise. He was disappointed when he lost at chess or shogi but not at Pro Bending, not until that night.
"Splash," he said with a self-deprecating smirk.
Yutaka took a moment to ponder why he was disappointed he had lost. It was just a game, and not even a strategy game like he normally enjoyed. He had only learned the game less than three months prior but this time losing stung.
Suddenly, Pro Bending was important and he wanted to improve at it. For once, the man who was prone to giving up once things got challenging wanted to push on.

The tired and sore earthbender walked towards the center of the practice field trying and failing to suppress a smile.
"Next time....next time I'm going to push you back a zone."
Given her more ventilated garb Yutaka assumed that Ren'ai was not as sweaty as himself and might be repulsed at the idea of touching him but he extended his arms towards her for a hug.
"I'll get better. Promise."

"I've never been one for physical pursuits..." he patted the slight bulge of his stomach which had flattened a bit over the months. "Obviously. But this is fun and watching you in your element, uh, no pun intended, is just wonderful. You just light up...also not a pun. I, um, I'd like to watch you in a match some time. I'm sure you make it look like art. Is there anyway to get around the rule about having a waterbender? Couldn't you just find a water bender and train them? I bet a lot of people want to be pro benders."

He took his girlfriend's hand and looked down slightly into her amber eyes.
"I would like to help you any way that I can. I bet that seeing you bend in a professional match is something awe-inspiring. I'd like to see that one day."

Ren’ai smiled when she saw that Yutaka seemed a bit tongue-tied form her compliment. At least that’s what she assumed, because he didn’t actually say anything in response. She held her breath a bit watching him try to dodge her attacks. Was I going to hard on him? she thought to herself. Her attacks weren’t nearly as fast or fierce as they usually were – and her aim was certainly off, because of the stupid dress that she was wearing. Mental note to herself: Never do Probending or training of any kind in a dress. It’s a very bad, very stupid idea – unless you want to feel like an idiot. That was never a goal of hers, though, not ever. She let out that breath and breathed properly again once she saw that he did not seem hurt at all. She had just been overthinking things.

A smile crossed Ren’ai’s lips when she saw that he had stepped over the final line, and in a normal match, would be sent into the drink. He understood, as well, because he simply said the word splash. Was he disappointed or something? The smirk he gave her was a tad self-deprecating, but that would not be new for him. He had also sighed after he had noticed. She would of course be disappointed – actually, that was putting it mildly. When she had gotten pushed into the drink in one of her matches that season, it had infuriated her to the point where she couldn’t see straight. Not a good thing in hindsight. However, that didn’t explain why Yutaka seemed to care. He was a casual player at best. Was he actually enjoying this? She knew why he had wanted to start – or figure she did – but that didn’t mean that you had to care about the outcome, especially when you knew you’d lose.

Ren’ai’s smile turned into a smirk as he said next time he’d push her back a zone. She’d be thrilled, of course… kind of annoyed, but thrilled for him at any rate. She highly doubted it would come to that, though, unless he got in a lucky shot. She was used to practicing against Yuri, who was a professional with the same element. Therefore, her reflexes tended to be fast. Besides, in an actual Probending match, you had three members of the opposite team, not just one. You had to be fast. Yutaka extended his arms out to her for a hug. She hesitated for a moment – but only a moment. He was bound to be sweaty, and she was not – not as much as normal anyway. However, she shrugged it off, and went into his arms anyway as he said he promised to get better. “You’re doing fine, honestly,” she said. “You haven’t been doing this very long, and you’re training with professional-level athletes. Give yourself time.”

Ren’ai smiled at his compliments to her. She understood that he wanted to see in her an actual match, but he didn’t seem to understand that it wasn’t just as easy as finding a Waterbender. “Yes, we could just find a Waterbender and train them, but it’s not as easy as it sounds,” the Firebender explained. “We need someone who will stick with us, and as I’m sure you’ve noticed, I am not the easiest person to get along with.” That was an understatement, although he was sticking around for the time being. She and Yuri had been best friends forever, even though they had hit a bump in the round, and Tadashi was good friends with them, too… though there had also been a bump in the round, one not caused by either of them that had indirectly led to the bump in the road between her and Yuri for a short time.

“But that aside, you need to find someone that can be at the level that you need them to,” Ren’ai explained. “Kamil knew how to Waterbender, and was a fan of Probending, but had never actual trained for Probending until he met us. He worked out, until he quit…” That brought back rather bad memories for her, but the dark-haired young woman pushed that thought of her mind and concentrated on Yutaka. “It’s possible to train them, but you have to find someone first… someone who will fit in with your group. Yuri’s usually pretty even tempered, but I am not.” She was better – a lot better, but she was very aggressive when it came to Probending – actual training and matches, not what she and Yutaka had been doing. “I’m a tough Captain to put it midly.”

Ren’ai felt him take her and she smiled at him. “You will see me in one, I promise, Yuri and I won’t quit,” she told him, squeezing his hand. “It’s just a matter of patience… not one of my strong suits, but I’m trying.” It was a shame that neither of her older brothers were interested, but then again, Tadashi was right about that… either one of them on the team would be a mistake, with her being their younger sister. They’d never be able to except her as Captain anyway. She was always ‘baby sister’, though of course, she loved them both dearly. The Firebender knew that the Dragon Hawks would have a Waterbender again… it might take a while, but she and Yuri would be patient until they could find one.

It was difficult for Yutaka to immediately determine just who was being encouraged as they spoke. There were times when Yutaka felt like a heavy weight around his girlfriend's neck but no on that night. Pro bending aside, he felt as if Ren'ai was on his team and that on that night he'd been a rather good teammate.

Though he did pay for two matches Yutaka knew that he did not have another within him. His already weathered protective gear was no starting to tear and his body felt as if it had already gone though that particular process.
"Would you like to cool down by yourself while I change? I paid for two matches but it's been a nice night and I'd rather not end it being rushed to a hospital."
It was a humorous exaggeration but not much of one. Adrenalin still surged through him and the sweating earthbender avoided thinking about the crash he would be subjected to later.

More than anything at that moment Yutaka wanted a shower but there was an even greater force pulling him in the opposite direction which was the thought of another human being wandering in and seeing him naked. Airi had helped him get over some of his self-consciousness but he felt nowhere near the public nudity stage.
Sweat was easier to wash off than shame so he merely wiped himself down with a towel and dressed after stuffing his training gear into his duffel bag.

Minus his tie and a few unbuttoned buttons from his shirt Yutaka left the changing room the way he entered. At least now Ren'ai was not the only one in formal wear.
"If I was told six months ago that not only would I be dating a wonderful woman but that she would make me appreciate pro bending I'd call to have that person committed. Thanks for showing me all of this, Ren'ai."
Timidly, he placed his hand on her shoulder.
"Next time...let's do something less strenuous. Shogi or listening to records or something." Dancing crossed his mind but that seemed a little too physical for the half-comatose state he felt himself entering.
"Maybe we can shop for some new training gear for me. You probably can tell the good stuff from the bad. I decided that I can eat instant ramen and day old bread for another month to afford new gear."

Yutaka lightly punched Ren'ai in the shoulder.
"See what you did to me? You have turned me into some sort of pro bending enthusiast."
The cold air from the outside was such a departure from the moderate temperature from the practice arena that it felt twice as cold to Yutaka who rushed to get back into his car.
"Would you like to go anywhere special?" He paused and smirked. "Back to the party? I'm sure we're missed terribly."

Ren’ai nodded. “Sure.” She didn’t want him to push harder than necessary, and although she knew that it was meant as a bit of a joke, but the dark-haired young woman knew that it wasn’t entirely. Yutaka may be getting in better shape – slowly, but surely – but she would never ask him to push himself too far. Honestly, she was just proud of him for even trying. Not everyone who was not naturally athletic would, and especially not training against two Probenders for starters. She gave him a lot of credit for what he was doing. Sure, he’d never be in as a good of shape as she was – she spent a lot of time training to stay in the shape she was in. Her boyfriend would also never be Probending-level with his Earthbending. That wasn’t important to her, though, and that wasn’t why he was doing it. At least she was fairly certain it wasn’t why he was doing it.

When Yutaka came out, she smiled at him as he spoke to her. He called her wonderful and thanked for her showing him Probending. The Firebender just shrugged. She didn’t give herself as much credit as he seemed to. If that was how he saw it, than that was fine with her. “You’re the one actually doing it,” she told him. “I may have introduced you to it, but that’s only part of it.” At the mention of shogi, she mentally groaned. He enjoyed it, and she did it for him. It wasn’t that she didn’t enjoy it; it was hard for her at things she wasn’t good at. That sounded selfish and arrogant, but when she was so good at Probending, shogi was… not her style. She had too much emotion and aggression for it. That was why it was good for her, though, and she knew it. Strategy was needed in Probending, too. Besides, it was her emotion that had contributed to their early end of the season.

“Either one of those is fine with me,” Ren’ai decided on saying. “If you want my help with picking out new gear, I’d be happy to.” Especially if he was training against her, he needed it. That she wouldn’t say out loud, though. “Your gear is a bit worn, anyway, in my opinion.” The dark-haired young woman didn’t like the idea of her boyfriend living off ramen and what not for the unforeseeable future, but… good gear was not cheap, and chances are, he wasn’t going to ask his parents for the money. She sure wouldn’t want to, though her parents agreed to fund her only if she was competing in the season. Other than that, she and Yuri were on her own. They made decent money waitressing, though. It wasn’t a bad way to make money if you were fast and nice enough. The nice part was her problem, and Ichiro occasionally had to warn her about it.

As he lightly punched her shoulder and called her out for turning him into a Probending enthusiast, Ren’ai just smirked at him and shrugged. “Hey, Probending is awesome. Just because you didn’t realize that until we started dating isn’t my fault. It’s not my problem that no one had bothered to educate you on how awesome it was until I came along.” The Firebender gave her a flick as she said that. It was still down, as she hadn’t gone over to get her shoes or her hair clip yet. They were still sitting off to the side of the area they were in. She did end up getting her shoes and putting her hair back up before they went back outside, though. Once they were outside in the colder air, Yutaka asked her if she wanted to go anywhere special. The jab about the party was not appreciated, though. “No, anything but back to the party, please,” she said.

Even though Yutaka knew it looked later than it actually was due to the winter solstice he assumed there would not be many sporting goods stores open on a holiday. It was surprising enough that the practice arena was open.
Instead of giving up and going home and eating something warm Yutaka found himself looking through the window at a display mannequin outfitted with a charcoal and light gray pro bending uniform. Before he knew it his face was pressed up against the glass and fogging it up with his breath. It was as if he'd been practicing in soiled rags before.

He stood next to the uniform's mannequin in the same arms akimbo pose so Ren'ai could imagine the uniform on him.
"What do you think? Flattering?"

Normally Yutaka felt a little odd expressing enthusiasm in front of Ren'ai as it usually prompted a the look of someone happy that he was happy but unenthusiastic about the subject. At first his interest in pro bending was limited to one particular pro bender but he knew that trying to impress someone else couldn't spur a three month long interest in him.
It was the first physcial activity he didn't give up on after his first failure and he attributed that to the woman whose opinion he currently solicited regarding training gear.
He squinted at the small black turtle logo and thought it almost too appropriate for someone as large and slow as himself.
"Is Genbu a good brand? Can it stand up to the kind of punishment you and Airi are going to put it through?"

Yutaka wondered if he looked half as excited at Ren'ai did when she spoke of pro bending. Other people talking about the sport were boring but Ren'ai talked about it with such passion that he couldn't help be drawn in.
"What's the story of your first uniform?"
He sat on the hood of his parents' car much to the chagrin of his driver but felt immune to both his annoyed stare as well as the cold of the evening. When Ren'ai spoke she was all that existed.

The two of them found themselves looking through display windows. It seemed much later than it really was to her, but honestly, she was happy just to be spending time with Yutaka. Besides, they weren’t at the party and that was a major plus for her. It didn’t take him long before he seemed to find one that he liked. Of course, these in the display windows were far above what he had been using against her and Airi. He turned around and posed for her in front of her, and Ren’ai couldn’t help but smile. “Actually, I think it is,” she told him when he asked if it was flattering. She couldn’t be sure if it wasn’t actually on him, but just judging by looking at it, it would better than what he had now. It looked to be good quality from what she could see, though she wasn’t close enough to see the brand, and it was getting a bit dark. However, she thought the color scheme wasn’t showy and would look fine on him. Besides, one didn’t need a showy uniform anyway, especially not for just practice.

Ren’ai was glad to see Yutaka so excited about Probending in general. They both knew it was good for him, and besides, it was something else that they could share together. Even if she did beat him every time, and she was sure that Airi did, too, considering what she’d seen from her that one match they’d been in against each other. “Genbu is a decent brand,” she told him honestly. “There are better, of course, but it’s a decent brand. The price is good for the quality that you got.” She knew most of the brands of Probending uniforms and such because of her long interest in it. If she hadn’t heard of it, it either wasn’t knew or wasn’t worth remembering – either way, something you should stay away from. She might have asked Yuri if it was an odd brand that she didn’t know. Maybe her best friend would have remembered something that she didn’t. That happened sometimes.

Yutaka asked her about her first uniform, sitting on the car to listen to her, as if she was on a pedestal on or something. Ren’ai just shrugged. “My parents have never supported my dream of being a professional Probender,” she told her boyfriend. “So, Yuri and I had to make due. He would never buy me anything, so Yuri got her parents to buy us cheap second hand stuff. It did the job.” They weren’t the best quality, but when you’re young, you took what you could get. “After she and I got jobs, we saved up for stuff that was a little better quality, but we could never afford the good stuff.” It had been annoying for her, coming from a family that could afford the expensive stuff, but wouldn’t get it for them.

“My father said that if we actually got to compete in the Probending League, he would support us completely. I think he said that because he never thought we would get there, but when we did, he was a man of his word. That was when we got the good stuff, the stuff we still use now.” It was a never ending source of annoyance for Ren’ai, but she wasn’t about to turn down her father’s money. The Firebender could be proud, but she wasn’t that proud. He had told them he would cover all the costs if they got the tournament, and they did. Now, of course, he wasn’t anymore, and they were back to getting things on their own. That was fine. They managed, and they could still use the good stuff that her father had bought. “However, you asked about the first one – cheap, second hand stuff that got us buy. It did the job, but I wouldn’t use it now if anyone paid me to.”

A fraction of a second after Ren'ai stated her opinion about how the bending uniform would look on Yutaka his decision to get the uniform changed from certain to temped to break the window and leave his money in the store so he could get it that much sooner.
He knew that to be taking assertiveness a bit too far, though. He could wait until morning.

Unlike himself, Ren'ai didn't seem to feel any pangs of sentiment regarding her old equipment while Yutaka wondered if he might keep his old equipment even if parts of it was being held together by tape and hope. The fact that his parents immediately replaced anything remotely out of date fostered a sense of sentimentality which was wrapped up in his sense of rebellion. It helped that he often felt like the old gear his parents were eager to replace.

It wasn't a particularly happy story, the tale of Ren'ai's first uniform, but Yutaka smiled anyway.
"You're a self-made pro-bender. That's amazing and you talk like it's not a big deal. You had a dream and went for it. That's pretty great."

Yutaka took another look at the uniform in the shop window and opened the car door for his girlfriend.
"You made me enjoy a solstice party. I never thought that would happen. Even my parents couldn't ruin the evening."
As the car stopped in front of Ren'ai's apartment the most awkward moment of their dates appeared: seeing if there was another date in the future.
"This was a lot of fun. So, um, would you like to do something similar later? I mean without the party and dressing up and such? Maybe to go a club or see a bending match? You know...together?"

The idea of effortlessly asking Ren'ai out despite their dating history seemed alien and wrong. He didn't like being nervous about rejection but he absolutely hated the idea of being comfortable enough to take the beautiful probender for granted.
The sweaty palms and embarrassment were a small price to pay if he made Ren'ai feel even a fraction as special as he felt every time she agreed to go out with him.
