He brightened. "Good idea!" He slammed his locker door shut vindictively. That shirt was pretty much the ugliest ugly thing he had ever seen ever. There was no way he'd wear it if he had another choice.

Padding after Hyuk-jae, Nagisa took his co-worker's compliment with pride and a slight puffing of his chest. "Hi-mi-tsu~~" he replied, smiling mysteriously. The co-worker scratched his head and shrugged, and Nagisa couldn't help but giggle. Wasn't it obvious why he was So Mature today? He had spent so much time staring at himself in the mirror today, feeling like he looked like a Very Mature Young Man, that everyone could tell what happened just by looking at him. Maybe that wasn't the case; that made him a little prouder, since it was something no one else knew.

Nima and Soon Hee were late. Nagisa fidgeted impatiently while waiting for them. Not that it was a particularly long wait — they showed up roughly five minutes after they were supposed to — but because he disliked being kept waiting. Oblivious to any sort of hypocrisy on his part in the sentiment, Nagisa swung his legs back and forth in his seat, glancing over at Hyuk-jae every so often and blushing a little. He hadn't asked if Hyuk-jae had enjoyed himself. He hadn't really done anything himself, and he hoped that it was okay with Hyuk-jae.

"Shouta? Shouta!" Nima pouted next to him; Nagisa blinked back to reality. The portly lady dramatically stuck out her lower lip. He stretched his lips out into a passable smile.

"I'm sorry, I was just imagining how lovely it would be to have a picnic while the weather is still nice!" He had no desire to share what was really on his mind. He made his expression look interested. "Could you please say it again?"

Nima obliged, still pouting. "I said, why aren't you wearing the shirt and waistcoat I gave you? I especially called ahead today!"

Forcing his face into a look of remorse, Nagisa let his gaze fall to the floor. "I'm sorry," he murmured. "It's just that..." Nagisa reached over and touched Hyuk-jae's hand. "Eunhyuk gave me this shirt as a present and... well..." His lip quivered purposefully. "... I just got so excited that I didn't even think. I'm so sorry."

The woman did not respond instantly, which surprised him. Instead she studied him and Hyuk-jae thoughtfully, as if trying to understand something.

"So is that what you were doing last night?"

Nagisa froze, his eyes widening. "Sorry — what?"

Nima tilted her head to the side. "I saw you guys out by _______ shopping centre." She rattled off the name of a shopping centre by the Tower. "Is that when he bought you this?"

Ugh, Nima saw them on their date. Nagisa smiled his wide, fake smile at Nima and nestled up against her. "Oh gosh, I don't know!" he lied easily. "I didn't get them until this morning. Maybe!" He hoped Hyuk-jae would play along. "We were out running errands last night. I wanted to go to ______, you know, that shoe store over there, to see if they had anything new." Nagisa looked up at her from under his eyelashes. "They didn't, and I was really disappointed, so we just went home."

He flagged down a food cart; there were small little bamboo steamers of shrimp shumai. He took two, one for him and Nima, along with some soy sauce and key limes. "I just love shumai," he said, changing the subject abruptly. "It's my favourite type of seafood!" He smiled winningly at Nima and Soon Hee. "I hear that seafood is very romantic. Do you think so too?"

Hyuk-jae was focusing on Soon Hee, doing his best to flirt with her. Nagisa, for once, seemed to be having trouble — he kept staring at him! Hyuk-jae laughed a little as Nima pouted. Truly he found the woman taxing, and was beyond thankful that he wasn't her favourite. He caught her glaring at him once, and raised a brow. What was her problem?

Put off by her demeanor, Hyuk-jae was determined to focus on Soon Hee. He complimented her hair and asked about work and was that a new brooch? He was so glad she'd come and —
So is that what you were doing last night?

Apparently she'd seen them out. Was it a problem? Hyuk-jae wasn't sure if customers were supposed to know. Could they get in trouble for this? It wasn't any of her business! Grinning wolfishly at her, he flashed his eyes at Nagisa for a moment. "How funny!" he said, "he's exactly what I was doing last night." Soon Hee gasped a little, scandalized by the very forward and somewhat inappropriate statement.
"Eunhyuk!"
Placing his arm around her shoulder easily, Hyuk-jae smiled at Soon Hee. "My apologies," he said, "I forgot you were so delicate — please forgive me."
She was blushing.

Nima didn't seem pleased by his 'joke'. She was quick to point out any lapse in his attention, too. He missed something Soon Hee said, staring at her blankly for a moment as his mind fell into a few-seconds-long absence seizure.
"Can't you pay attention?" said Nima peevishly, frowning as she caught Nagisa looking at him again.

"I —" Hyuk-jae glanced at Soon Hee. Should he apologize? Normally they just... didn't acknowledge the fits. Had it really been so noticeable? Soon Hee apologized for boring him and he immediately protested. "No! Sorry! I-- I have a bad daydreaming habit!"

She took a shumai, agreeing that it was a romantic food. As usual, Hyuk-jae ate nothing. Nima commented on that, too, seeming out of sorts. Soon Hee, in her quiet way, took up the rest of his attention while they were there. It felt like the beginning of a very long and very off-kilter night.

Nagisa gaped at Hyuk-jae for being so forward, feeling his cheeks colour a dull red. Well then! He glanced at Nima, who was looking rather disgruntledly at Hyuk-jae. Alarm bells going of in his head, Nagisa tugged on her arm. "Ne, ne," he called, drawing her attention to some random anecdote.

It didn't really help. The entire hour Nima kept taking jabs at Hyuk-jae, calling attention to him spacing out, saying mean things about his not eating, and no matter what he did Nima kept coming back to giving Hyuk-jae a hard time. Nagisa tried his best to divert the older woman, but she seemed hell-bent on being rude. It took all of his self control to smile at and engage her instead of yelling at her to leave. The hour felt like twenty, and by the end of it Nagisa had a throbbing headache behind his eyes.

He took a couple of aspirin after Nima and Soon Hee left; Nima said something about making "other arrangements" for her next visit, but Nagisa was too annoyed to really pay attention. The aspirin helped with the headache some, but there was a nagging pain behind his eyes that didn't go away.

In the middle of their next client, Jainukul stopped by and took him aside. He exchanged a confused look with Hyuk-jae before following the madame to her office.

"Nima wants to book you alone for next week."

Nagisa blanched. "What? Why?"

The madame gave him a wry smile. "It looks like she liked you better before we billed you as a couple. She says she feels your attention is too divided."

He furrowed his brow. "It is not," he protested. "If anything it's better now, since Hyuk-jae and Soon Hee get along well!"

Jainukul held up a hand. "You don't need to defend yourself to me," she interrupted. "This is how the client feels. Will you agree to it? She's offering extra for a solo booking."

Extra. Nagisa paused. Nima was one of his better paying clients; not the best, but slightly better than average. Extra would... would be nice. Jainukul looked at him with understanding.

"Well, you don't have to make a decision now," she said, getting up and showing him the door. "Let me know in a couple of days so I can tell give her an answer."

He headed back to the hosting area, giving Hyuk-jae a shrug and mouthing I'll tell you later.

The rest of the night went by uneventfully, by his estimation. Hyuk-jae seemed like he was spacing out more often than usual — should he be concerned? — so Nagisa put extra effort into covering for his partner's lapses. None of the clients seemed to notice anything was amiss.

After the shift, Nagisa leaned his head up against the cool metal of his locker, rubbing his eyes. His headache hadn't gone away completely. Maybe he needed more water, or a nap.

Hyuk-jae was never so glad to see Nima leave. Soon Hee almost apologized for her friend and said something to the effect of not minding that he was so absent-minded. The dark-haired young man found himself apologizing again, and the rest of the night seemed to follow suit. Was it just him, or was he having more 'moments' than usual?

Frowning, Hyuk-jae tried harder to focus. It didn't seem to help. He noticed that Nagisa required something for a headache as well and wondered if they just both didn't need more sleep. When Jainukul pulled the shorter man aside, he thought nothing of it. Perhaps someone wanted to book Nagisa solo — not that he blamed them. Especially with their lady clients, he often felt that he was a step behind his partner.

By the time they were done and back in the locker area, both of them were drained.
"You okay?" Hyuk-jae looked down at Nagisa, leaning his brown head against the locker and rubbing at his eyes. The younger man seemed pained. Hyuk-jae touched his wrist to his friend's neck for a moment. He didn't feel hotter than usual. It was a puzzle! Hyuk-jae spent the rest of the night keeping Nagisa under a watchful eye, trying to prevent him from straining himself.

The next week passed in a blur. Hyuk-jae went privately to find linens and things for his apartment, not wanting to take Nagisa to some of the second-hand shops. The younger man had continuing headaches, having to put his comics down after much shorter times than usual. They went shopping but had to cut the trip short. Nagisa wasn't even excited about the candy floss! He rubbed his temples frequently and complained of feeling dizzy a few times. By the fourth day, Hyuk-jae began to get worried.

"Did you have headaches like this before?" he asked one morning as they washed the dishes.
The smaller man shrugged. "Sometimes. Not really like this though — I feel like it's been going on for days!"
Well, it had been going on for days. Frowning, Hyuk-jae turned off the water. "Shouldn't we go see someone?" he asked, after a long moment of silence. While he personally hated healers and everything to do with them, they surely wouldn't treat Nagisa like they treated him. After all, Nagisa was normal. And he couldn't keep having his head hurt like this!

"We can just go visit someone very quickly and they can tell us if there's something you can do to make it better." They'd already tried the headache teas he had on hand and it didn't work. Neither had cool cloths to the head or lying in darkness. Even if the headache went away, it always came back after Nagisa was up for a little bit.

"What about the Apothecary? That boy in there is nice enough for a healer. I'm sure he could tell us." They couldn't both be off their game. It absolutely would not work, not even a little.

The following week was awful. Nagisa couldn't remember a time when he felt worse; at least if he had a cold or something there was an end in sight! He didn't even know what was causing this, and nothing he did was helping.

What really bothered him most was being unable to read his comics. The ink on the page seemed less crisp than before, and he kept rubbing his eyes, wondering if he had something in them. Or maybe he had spilled some water somehow? Whatever the reason, he kept having to bring the book closer and closer to his face to be able to read it. That would help for a bit, but then he'd feel dizzy and needed to put the book down.

The headaches put a damper on everything. He barely mustered up enough energy to go to the market with Hyuk-jae, looking around listlessly and waiting quietly by his friend's side as he shopped until he couldn't take the dizziness any longer. At this point Hyuk-jae seemed incredibly concerned.

"What about the Apothecary? That boy in there is nice enough for a healer. I'm sure he could tell us," Hyuk-jae asked a few days later while they did dishes.

Nagisa shook his head. "No, no," he said hastily, trying to put a bright smile on his face. "I'm fine!"

Really, what would going to an apothecary do? They'd already tried a lot of herbal remedies and none of them had worked. Short of a magic powder — likely made up of some vile animal part, Nagisa thought darkly, remembering the virility medicine — Nagisa couldn't see how going to an apothecary would help. He wasn't sick, just dizzy and headache-y.

But after the fifth day with no change, Hyuk-jae insisted on going. No amount of pleading could change his mind, and Nagisa got ready to go in a huff. Well golly, his friend could get down right stubborn if he wanted to. The younger man puffed out his cheeks as they made their way to the shop. Well maybe if he went Hyuk-jae would see there was nothing that could be done and they could just get on with it.

He wrinkled his nose as they entered the apothecary. There were some pungent herbal odors floating around today, and Nagisa wasn't sure if he particularly enjoyed it.

Hyuk-jae wound up taking charge, speaking with a quiet, dark-skinned young man. Nagisa stood shyly behind his friend, his hand gripping the back of Hyuk-jae's shirt as he peeped around him to look at the other person.

He turned to look at Nagisa, who blushed; the young man was very pretty, almost lady-like. He smiled a little, as if to reassure him, and motioned for Nagisa to sit on a nearby stool. Gently, stuttering every so often, he questioned Nagisa about his headaches. How long had they been happening? Did any particular activities make them worse? Did he feel sick as well? Did he see spots? Did things get blurry if they were far away? How about if they were nearby?

Nagisa answered as best as he could, feeling a little uncomfortable. Was... was there something wrong with him? He looked to Hyuk-jae for support.

Basically, he'd had to drag Nagisa to the Apothecary in the end. Enduring no little amount of fussing and insisting that Nagisa was fine, Hyuk-jae took the younger man to the clinic, refusing to take no for an answer. Nagisa hid behind him as he spoke to the petite healer, gripping his shirt in what the Firebender could only assume was apprehension.

Not that he blamed him. Not even a little.

Lucky for both of them, Shtiya was as sweet as they came. He was a tiny, non-threatening figure, gently asking pertinent questions and using a little electric light to look at Nagisa's eyes and ears. After glancing at Hyuk-jae, he asked if either of them would mind his using Waterbending to get a better idea.

Uncomfortable, Hyuk-jae let Nagisa answer. The younger man had no way of knowing how much he hated Waterbending, since they hadn't talked about it before. In the end, Shtiya was very quick and chipper, eventually asking them to step into the back. Could Nagisa hold this patch over his left eye and read the letters on the top line of the chart, please?

Hyuk-jae looked at the chart. The top letters were the biggest, with it all getting smaller as it went down. Nagisa stumbled over reading them and he frowned watching him. The smaller the letters got, the worse Nagisa performed. But... He knew that the young man could read. A few times he opened his mouth to say something but a glance from the healer made him stop. Shtiya was very encouraging and didn't tell Nagisa if he was right or wrong, just let him read different lines. He asked him to switch eyes and made a few notes, but again didn't say anything about whether or not Nagisa was getting the letters right. In the end he told them to wait just a moment and went back to the front, leaving them alone.

Placing gentle hands on his friend's shoulders as they waited, Hyuk-jae pressed a sweet kiss to Nagisa's hair. "It'll be fine," he said. Did Nagisa know how poorly he'd done?

Shtiya returned about five minutes later with a referral to an eye specialist down the street. In his opinion, Nagisa was fine — he just needed glasses. He'd spoken on the telephone with the man just moments before and he'd agreed to see them immediately. The young man charged them the barest minimum price for his time and saw them to the door, assuring Nagisa that there really wasn't likely to be anything else the matter with him.

Nagisa sat and obediently followed the young healer's directions, allowing some waterbending to surround his head. It felt weird, the skin on his forehead being submerged in water but not anywhere else. It felt even weirder when the healer took the water away and his skin and hair were bone dry. The healer, who introduced himself as 'Shtiya', then handed Nagisa a little patch and asked him to put it over an eye and read off a chart that hung on the opposite wall.

The first couple of lines were easy; Nagisa read them off confidently. Each subsequent line got more and more difficult to read. After a few more lines, all Nagisa could see were little vague blurs of dark ink. Were there even characters that far down?

His readings became slower, more indecisive, as he struggled to make sense of what he was seeing. Eventually he started guessing. "A squiggly line," he said for one. "Puppy," he said for another. Shtiya said nothing, and Nagisa couldn't tell if he was reading the chart right. It was a little easier with the other eye, but not by much. Still, Shtiya neither confirmed nor denied if Nagisa read the chart correctly, instead making little notes on a piece of paper.

Finally they were done. Shtiya excused himself to a back room, and Nagisa fidgeted on the stool. Hyuk-jae came over and planted a kiss in his hair, reassuring him. Nagisa buried his face in Hyuk-jae's shirt. What was going on? The few minutes he waited for Shtiya to come back were some of the longest minutes of his life.

When Shtiya came back with the news, Nagisa was less than happy. "Glasses?" Nagisa repeated in disbelief. "I need glasses?" Where on earth had this come from? One day he was fine, the next headaches that meant he needed glasses?

Politely but unhappily, Nagisa thanked the healer for his time, following after Hyuk-jae to the recommended specialist with a frown on his face. The specialist, a lean man of roughly thirty years of age with thinning black hair that stood on end, was also very kind and soft-spoken. He introduced himself as 'Kato', then used a bunch of strange, scary-looking equipment to double check Shtiya's work and confirmed what the young healer had said: Nagisa needed glasses.

"Don't worry," Kato said, smiling. "Glasses aren't that bad! Think of it like a fashion accessory for your eyeballs."

He showed Nagisa a box full of different frames and told him to pick one. After some deliberation, Nagisa selected a set of round frames made with thin bits of metal — 'wire frames', Kato called them. The frames were large, and when Nagisa tried them on they were large enough to encompass his eyes and then some.

A few days later Nagisa received a call saying his glasses had arrived. Accompanied by Hyuk-jae, Nagisa went back to Kato's office. His glasses sat in a small hinged case on top of Kato's desk. Apprehensively he slipped the glasses on his face —

— and his jaw dropped. After a few speechless seconds, he slipped the glasses down on his nose to peer over the frames, then slipped them back up properly, over and over again to compare. Putting on the glasses made it seem as if he had been viewing the world from through a muddied glass this whole time.

He looked up at Hyuk-jae, marvelling at the fact he could see individual strands of hair, a little stray thread on his shirtsleeve. He looked around Kato's office, noting the fine grains of wood on the desk, the fuzz on the carpet, the little crack in the wall next to a cabinet.

Kato laughed good-naturedly, fussing over the frames while Nagisa was wearing them to make sure they fit on his face properly, curving around his ears comfortably but snugly, adjusting the nose piece. When he was done, he held up a mirror to Nagisa's face.

It... wasn't bad. Nagisa turned to Hyuk-jae, peering up at him, his eyes slightly magnified by his new lenses. "What do you think? How does it look?"

Glasses? Well, that was a relief! Hyuk-jae was incredibly pleased, but —
"Glasses?" Nagisa repeated in disbelief. "I need glasses?"

Frowning, Hyuk-jae glanced between Shtiya and Nagisa. Wasn't the younger man happy he didn't need anything more serious? Glasses, well. That was fine! Wasn't it fine? Hyuk-jae thought it was a relatively simple solution to what could have been a much bigger problem. As they went to the specialist he kept glancing over, unsure of what to say.
"Ah — kind of… a relief, isn't it?"

Nope. It wasn't.

They had to sit through a bunch of stuff at the specialist's, and then they had to wait. Nagisa moped about the apartment, moaning about his head and how ugly he'd look with glasses. Wouldn't people make fun of him he said and why couldn't it be something else he said and glasses would make him look boring he said. Hyuk-jae had almost had enough of it and was of half a mind to tell the fluffy-haired host right off for his severe vanity problem when the notice about the glasses being ready came.

They went to the office with no little trepidation on both their parts. Hyuk-jae wasn't sure he could take more whining about the glasses, and watched with apprehension as Nagisa put the wire frames to his face. Dear God, what would it be like living with him if he hated them?

But as it turned out, he needn't have worried. The younger man's entire face lit up as soon as he put the glasses on, and he moved them up and down, taking in the difference. It was charming, and Hyuk-jae wondered if the specialist got to see that kind of wonder on faces often. Surely he must.

"What do you think? How does it look?"

Laughing, Hyuk-jae shook his head. "You're adorable," he said, after a minute. He was just glad that the reaction was mostly positive. Nagisa could definitely pull off the schoolboy look even better now, and the Firebender made sure to say so. He felt certain their clients would find the change in Nagisa's look as adorable as he did. It would probably go to the young man's head, in fact. They thanked the specialist and Nagisa paid for the glasses before they left.

The younger man stared at everything on the way to what wouldn't be Hyuk-jae's home much longer. He hadn't wanted to say anything while Nagisa was sick, and then he'd put it off because of the glasses… but Hyuk-jae was almost ready to move out. All he had left to do now was paint the living room, and he wanted to do that with Nagisa.

In the end, Hyuk-jae casually invited Nagisa to come paint his apartment with him while they ate dinner and the younger man exclaimed over the colours of the food now that he could see. When their next day off rolled around, Hyuk-jae left directions to the place on the table for Nagisa and headed to the apartment.

The cans of sky blue paint were sitting in the middle of the empty room, on top of a tarp. Hyuk-jae had prepared the place well enough for painting, getting enough materials for the both of them. A little second-hand kettle, cheery with its sunny yellow enamel, sat on the stove. Walking in front door, turning left would take the visitor into the living room, with the paint cans, while turning right would lead straight into the kitchen. The bathroom was directly across from the entrance.

It was a tiny, but efficient, space. Hyuk-jae was over the moon with it. The Murphy bed was folded up along the back wall of the living room, out of sight. "What do you think?" he asked, excited. The kitchen had a tiled white and black floor and a window above the sink. "It's perfect, isn't it? I know it's not as big as your place, but I don't need nearly so much space."

He'd already primed the walls, figuring that Nagisa would appreciate painting actual color on instead of more white. So far he had yet to move any of his clothing from the shorter man's place, but there was no rush. He wanted it to feel like a home when he moved in, wanted to make sure that it was a comfortable place. Hyuk-jae wanted it to be the place he'd always dreamed of.

The studio apartment was much smaller than Nagisa's two-story, but it felt like a palace to Hyuk-jae.

As Hyuk-jae predicted, his new glasses were a hit with their clients. Everyone ooh'd and ahh'd over them, remaking how cute they looked on him. Nagisa took the compliments in stride, but couldn't help feeling warm and fuzzy with each one. He'd been so nervous about getting them! Part of his job at the club was to look good. If the glasses had looked stupid, then he would've lost clients, and therefore income. He liked living the way he did, and he didn't want to have to give it up.

Luckily, though, it didn't come to that. Nagisa grew accustomed to his glasses, aesthetically and practically, in almost no time at all. After the first couple of days with the glasses, his headaches disappeared completely; he resumed reading his comics with gusto, often marvelling aloud at all the details he missed before.

One evening, over dinner, Hyuk-jae asked Nagisa to come help him paint his new apartment. Nagisa was taken aback. Had Hyuk-jae said he'd already leased one, and he'd just forgotten? The younger man tried to remember, but with the whole glasses thing a lot of the week outside of it was a blur. Still, he remembered Hyuk-jae had said it was important to him to have his own place so Nagisa did his best to hide his loneliness.

On their next day off, Nagisa awoke to find directions to Hyuk-jae's new place on the table. Without his friend to encourage him to walk, Nagisa flagged down a cab instead, reading off the address to the driver.

When he arrived, Nagisa was pleased to see it was in a significantly better neighbourhood than Hyuk-jae's old place in the Dragon Flats district; he had been worried that Hyuk-jae's frugality would cause him to shy away from more expensive rentals. While this studio wasn't as upscale as the place Nagisa rented, it was still a bit better than the place his parents were in, and loads, loads better than the dingy Dragon Flats place.

He greeted Hyuk-jae with a tight hug, rubbing his face against the fabric of Hyuk-jae's shirt. Nagisa had to remind himself already of how important this was to his friend.

"What do you think?" he asked, excited. "It's perfect, isn't it? I know it's not as big as your place, but I don't need nearly so much space."

Nagisa looked around. While it wasn't something he'd choose for himself it did seem, somehow, absolutely perfect for Hyuk-jae. It was simple, efficient, but — despite the currently bare state — a bit rustic and homey. Like Hyuk-jae's cooking, kinda.

"It's fantastic," the shorter man replied with a smile. "It's really... really you[, if that makes any sense."

Spying the cans of pretty blue paint, Nagisa rolled up his shirt sleeves. He had managed to dig up some very, very old clothes. Well, a year old, anyway. They were clothes from before he became a host; he had stashed his old things in a box in the second bedroom, unable to bring himself to throw them away. It wound up being a fortuitous indecision.

He looked vastly different from his normal look; his trousers were a rougher linen than his dress trousers, his pull-over shirt was patternless, worn and a little threadbare in the elbows. His shoes were dull, unshined, and scuffed in places. All in all, clothes that wouldn't suffer if he accidentally got paint on them.

"So... how do you do this?" he asked.

Surprised by how tightly Nagisa hugged him, Hyuk-jae stood very still for a moment. He smelled like gochujang and green tea and the herby, near-mint scent of his soap. It was the normal Hyuk-jae smell of having made lunch for them already, of taking a shower when he got up, of making tea for Nagisa's arrival.

"I made tea for you," he said, once Nagisa let go of him and took a step back. What was that for? Taking in his friend's outfit, Hyuk-jae's mouth curved in a slow smile, his eyes warm. These must be some of the absolute oldest clothes he had! Despite their plain-ness and worn nature, to Hyuk-jae it was likely the most provocative outfit Nagisa had ever worn. "And dinner. For later." Usually he felt slightly out of place next to the shorter man. Right now, though — right now they looked like they went together. Truly.

It made him want very much to just unfold the Murphy bed and skip painting altogether, but that wouldn't do at all. Settling for pouring Nagisa a cup of tea to get away from the physical proximity of him, Hyuk-jae showed his friend the few dishes and talked for a moment about how happy he was with the storage in the place, despite it being so small.

While Nagisa looked around at his apartment, Hyuk-jae waited for a verdict. The kitchen cabinets were stocked with enough second-hand dishes for two people, and the mug he was currently using for his tea was chipped on one edge of its rose-patterned surface. He still had yet to get a window box or any seating for the living area, but it needed painting first. Which, naturally, was why they were there. As Nagisa exclaimed that it was perfect for him, the taller man smiled softly. "It will be," he said. "You'll see."

"So... how do you do this?"

"Oh —" Hyuk-jae picked up a roller. "Just put this in the paint and put in on the wall. Smooth as you can. It's really easy and I already put down things to protect against a mess." He grinned, demonstrating with his paint roller. The paint was a cheerful sky blue, bright and clean. "It's a pretty color, right?"

It took them a few hours to paint everything, even with the size. Hyuk-jae had to reach above Nagisa to finish near the ceilings. By evening, they were both hungry and very done painting. Hyuk-jae left the windows open for ventilation and served them both beef and spicy vegetables, with a rice ball for Nagisa on the side. They had to sit on the floor. "I figured you and I can look for a sofa, maybe?" Hyuk-jae said between bites. Nagisa was good with color matching. He would be able to help him find something to match the walls, right?

Other things, like a bedside table that doubled as a living room table, Hyuk-jae could pick up himself. He'd just get plain wooden ones, no fuss. Easy to find second-hand! Glancing around, he realized that after this, he had no excuse to stay in Nagisa's apartment any longer. The paint would be dry by the next night. Wound Nagisa miss him, once he was gone? He knew they'd see each at work constantly, but what if the beginnings of their romance — if he even had the right to call it that — were just based on proximity? Would it fade away after now? An ache in his chest surprised him, and he covered it by getting up to refill his tea so that the fluffy-haired man wouldn't see.

One more night.

Painting was a lot more fun than he thought. He wondered if he should give his place a new coat of paint. Ah, but it'd be more difficult; Hyuk-jae's place was already empty. He'd have to remove all that furniture.

Miraculously, he didn't get more paint on himself than the walls, though he did get a splotch on his cheek at one point.

By the time they were through, he had only a splotch of paint on the toe of his left shoe, and a smear across one sleeve. He grinned at Hyuk-jae as he bit into his onigiri. "That was fun," he admitted, talking around his mouthful. "I really enjoyed it!"

Hyuk-jae asked about looking for a couch. Nagisa beamed at him. "Of course!" He rambled about the shops he had bought his furniture at until Hyuk-jae interrupted him, saying that he couldn't afford to shop there.

His face fell a little. Of course; he should've known that Hyuk-jae wouldn't have wanted to buy brand new furniture, at retail prices. Instead, Hyuk-jae suggested they look for second-hand furniture. Nagisa's jaw dropped a little. Why buy second hand? They were doing so well at the club, surely there was no need for second-hand shopping.

But Hyuk-jae insisted — slightly irritated, Nagisa thought — that they would shop second-hand. It was his place, Hyuk-jae reminded him. Nagisa snapped his mouth shut. Right. His place.

It was going to be so lonely, very soon.

Hyuk-jae said it would take another day for the paint to dry, so after dinner they went back home — back to Nagisa's place, specifically.  No sooner than the door was closed did Hyuk-jae reach for him, nuzzling into his neck, murmuring about how good he looked today.

Nagisa giggled. "Are you kidding?" he asked, kissing Hyuk-jae back. "These clothes are so ol — " Hyuk-jae interrupted him by kissing him deeply.

They didn't even make it up to the bedroom this time.

The second-hand shops had plenty of nice things, in Hyuk-jae's opinion. He ended up insisting that he would not buy something new, irritated at Nagisa's refusal to understand saving for a rainy day. What, did the younger man think he'd be earning like he was forever? He wouldn't! He needed to be careful.

"You should wear that more often," the Firebender said, eyelashes brushing against the skin of the younger man's neck. It had been so hard to just paint today, with Nagisa being so distracting. Apparently, the younger man found the very idea hilarious.

"Are you kidding? These clothes are so ol — "

Hyuk-jae didn't even let him finish that sentence, pressing their lips together and pulling him close. He ran strong hands down Nagisa's sides, gripping his hips to pull him against his body as they landed on the sofa. "They're perfect," he said, sliding his hand under the worn shirt, stroking fingers over soft skin and rolling a nipple between them. The Firebender was very giving, as lovers went. Perhaps it was Nagisa's inexperience, perhaps not, but that evening went the same as the last — with Hyuk-jae taking care of both of them.

He didn't think anything of it, not really. In the morning, after breakfast, the young man packed his clothes and promised to see Nagisa at a shop later to pick out a sofa. It was a one-trip move, because he didn't have much. The Firebender almost took the romance novel with him but decided, at the last moment, to leave it. Specifically he left it on Nagisa's bedside table with a couple pages he felt most instructional bookmarked. Maybe... maybe he just didn't know what to do? Right?

Yes, he left the book.

After arriving home, Hyuk-jae put his clothing into his closet — his very own closet! — and spent the rest of his morning putting together a window box of herbs in the kitchen, putting linens on the bed, and buying a new bottle of shampoo for the bathroom. Dithering over which type to buy, he eventually chose a tea tree variety that promised clean hair and a tingling feeling during use. Nagisa might like that, right? And he couldn't bring himself to buy the fruity type the other man normally used. He realized, as he paid in the shop, that he had purchased it thinking of Nagisa spending the night. Would Nagisa even want to spend the night?

After purchasing things like razor blades and salted meat and eggs and butter, Hyuk-jae went home. He met Nagisa at the shops and together they picked out a simple, but comfortable little sofa and one wooden bookshelf, a little end-table that could double as a bedside and one old, but sturdy chair. By the end of the day he felt anxious over having spent so much money, but as the two of them arranged things in his apartment, he had to admit it felt pretty good. The Firebender had already purchased quilts and throw blankets and bed-linen from a woman he knew in Dragon Flats, who made things herself and sold them cheaply. The colorful throws looked perfect thrown over the sofa, giving the living room a very lived-in and comfortable feel. Smiling, he looked over everything.

It was all coming together.
