The door in front of Tadashi looked just like the rest of the doors in the down-town tenement, physically at least. Like any door, it operated by swinging horizontally on hinges — in this case, inward to the individual apartment on the other side. It was a single solid piece with a handle on the side opposite the hinges, and a lock controlled from the inside right above the handle. It was painted some ungodly shade that no self-respecting highbrow would be caught dead wearing, and the paint was chipping slightly on the very top and bottom where it scuffed the lintel and floor. There was nothing particularly remarkable about the door itself.

But to Tadashi, it was the scariest thing in the world right now.

He lowered his hand, which was shaking terribly, temporarily abandoning his quest to knock. Right now he wanted nothing more than to be on the other side of this terrible door and sit comfortably with his friends as he had done so many times before. But he was scared nearly to death of how they might react. In his mind's eye he was all too able to picture Ren'ai yelling at him, shouting furious accusations and threatening him with the firebending of which he was so jealous, while Yuri stood there dispassionately behind her, sadly but stolidly reproving Tadashi... no, no no no. Tadashi always did jump to the absolute worst case scenario. Surely they had all been friends too long for them to dismiss him so callously... right? If they did reject him, at least they'd do so calmly and with some kindness. He hoped.

"Fear of a future that may never come to pass clouds one's judgement of the present which is still being directed," Tadashi said to himself, quoting his teacher Dorje from one of many lessons on emotional stability. It was a nice sentiment, but it had the feeling of... he didn't know really, one of those sage things that was meant to be read and not really understood. Even though he did understand it somewhat. The mantras felt more comfortable to Tadashi. Their easy repetition and simple meanings brought him back to centre. "Sabbe sattā sukhi hontu," he whispered, clasping a fist in front of the center of his chest — all beings, happy may they be. "Sabbe sattā sukhi hontu. Sabbe sattā sukhi hontu." He took another deep breath and forced a smile, and then muttered with slightly more hesitation, "Sabbe sattā abyapajjha hontu" — all beings, free from affliction may they be. "And that includes me." Though as absent from the Air Temple as he had been from his best friends' lives, Tadashi's faith and spirituality was the only thing that had kept him from losing himself to despair for the last few months.

If he was going to be free from affliction, then he had to face his fears and work through his guilt by talking to Yuri and Ren'ai. He raised his hand — it was still trembling, but not nearly as much — and struck the door several times. The knock echoed, to his ears, like a gong pronouncing judgement.

Ren’ai was wearing a pair of comfortable pants and slightly baggy shirt. It wasn’t anything that anyone would expect to see her in, but she was at home and not expecting to leave. Who was going to see her besides Yuri? She wasn’t sure where the other girl was, but she was busy reading a book at the moment, and was somewhat engrossed. Work had been hectic today, and reading a novel where someone else’s lives were worse than hers was okay on her account. Since Ichiro started to be in charge, they were short a waiter a few days a week. His father usually took at least one day off, if not too, and Lian, the assistant manager, also needed one or two days off. This meant that Ichiro was acting as an Assistant Manager when he was really still a waiter – sure, he got paid more than they did, but still. His father just should promote him already – or retire whichever he prefers.

Ren’ai picked up her cup of tea, only to find that it had gotten cold. Sighing, she set down her book, making sure to make her place in it with her bookmark, because it was getting good. The Firebender picked up the cup, and heated it up. Taking a sip, she muttered, “Much better,” before setting it back down and picking up her book again. She settled down into the couch a bit more, getting more comfortable. She was about to turn the page in her book when she heard a knock on the door. Groaning, she marked her place again and got up. “Okay, I’m coming,” she said, her voice clearly saying that she did not want to come, but what was going to anyway because… well, because there was someone at the door. What else were you supposed to do? Well, she could just leave them there, but that would mean more knocking before they went away.

Walking up to the door, Ren’ai undid the locks, and opened it up, hoping that whoever it was didn’t want anything and would leave so she could get back to reading. Of course, that was the exact opposite of what had happened, as she found her ex-friend, Tadashi at the door. For a moment, the Firebender just stood there, in shock. He was the last person that she thought would come over to her and Yuri’s apartment. “Yuri!” she screamed, turning her head before turning back towards the Air Acolyte. Folding her hands across her chest, her amber eyes glared fiercely at him and she did not move. “You better have a damn good excuse for thinking that you can just show up after all this time. If not, you can turn and leave right now because neither of us want to hear it.” If he didn’t like it… well, he shouldn’t have been a jerk like that. She had called Yuri because if she hadn’t, then she might let her temper get out of control. The Earthbender was usually the more calm of the two, not that had mattered in recent months.

A pair of clicks indicated that the first lock was being undone, and all of Tadashi's training very nearly went out the window as he started to panic. His fears of rejection began to resurface and he felt like he was using a stick to plug up a leaky beaver dam - the force of his anxieties was like an overwhelming flood. While the second lock was undone he fought to keep his emotions under control, and he had just managed to hold his freaking-out in his naval chakra when the door opened and he was treated to the long overdue sight of his friend Ren'ai.

Tadashi opened his mouth to speak but nothing came out. He tried several times to just say, "Hi," but no noise came out. It seemed inadequate to the situation anyway. Ren'ai seemed stricken just as speechless as he was for a few seconds, but then yelled for Yuri to come out. Tadashi's instant reaction was one of relief and joy — They missed me too! I feel so much better now, it's so good to see them! He was about to swing his arms up for a hug when Ren'ai turned back around and crossed her own arms, glaring at him. She had, as Tadashi already knew, the same colour eyes that his grandmother did. But Ren'ai's eyes were burning. I was wrong,
he thought. She is livid.

A good excuse for showing up after all this time? Tadashi had intended to start with an apology, an I-missed-you-guys, and worked slowly up to what had been happening for the last few months. He should have been used to Ren'ai's quick-to-anger personality, but it had been too long. As it was he was so shocked by her harsh introduction that he simply blurted out an answer, the only answer he had available.

"Grandma had consumption."

Without his intending it, his eyes welled up with tears, and even though Tadashi willed them to go away, go away right now damn it, I don't need this right now!, he couldn't help it. If Ren'ai and Yuri didn't understand the hell he had been through, the emotional train-wreck he had been for weeks... well, then he had no other friends in the world.

Yuri was just getting ready for another date. Well it’s not like she had really wanted to cancel this one because she did find this one guy very good looking. And it would not have been very nice of her to call him up and tell him that she changed her mind because that would have been rude of her. She was just finishing up her eye make-up when Ren’ai called her name. She took a breath to calm herself down because if it was her date then he was early. She was wearing a long sleeveless emerald green dress with blue lilies embroidered on the right side and a slit on the left side letting her shapely leg show a bit. Well at least it wasn’t overly sexy and she was able to be a bit modest, her hair was simply left down and curled to frame her face and her make-up was light and understated besides the light rose lipstick that she was wearing and a little bit of dark grey eye shadow.

When she walked out of the bathroom and went into the living room to see if it was her date or not, and it turned out to be Tadashi. Her green eyes opened up wide in shock, he was the last person that she had expected to see at their doorstep. But to hear about what had happened to his grandmother and him starting to tear up was too much for her. Before she knew it she had stepped forward and put her arms around him. True she was still mad at him but she felt bad for him, and stepped back after a moment.

“I’m sorry about your grandmother being sick, but that doesn’t excuse ignoring us for all of these months.” Yuri said before she knew what she was saying. It was true that lately that she had gotten just a little more vocal then she had been before everything had gone to hell. But then again life did change people and if their old friend didn’t understand that she had changed then he could just go jump in a lake.

Ren’ai instantly felt guilty when Tadashi said that his grandmother had been sick and started crying. Of course he would start crying. That just figured. Here it was, and she had every right to be mad, and he made her guilty by bursting out into tears. She hadn’t noticed Yuri come up. It seemed as if she was going out on a date tonight, though the Firebender didn’t remember. Of course, her Earthbending friend hugged Tadashi, being the calm one as always. She said that she was sorry but that it didn’t excuse his behavior one bit. Of course, she was right, but didn’t she have the right to be upset and angry at him? He and Kamil and both abandoned them at around the same time, and it had sent her and Yuri into a downward spiral that they had only just recently managed to stop. She had every right to be mad! However, being mad wouldn’t change anything. Chances are he was unaware that Kamil had quit, and he was here now… that was how she was supposed to be thinking about this right? It wouldn’t hurt to try and take a leaf out of Yuri’s book for once in her life.

Sighing, Ren’ai grabbed both Yuri and Tadashi and dragged them both inside of the apartment. “Oh, get in here you two,” she said, closing and locking the door behind them. She went into the kitchen and got Tadashi something to wipe his eyes with other than his clothes. For a moment, the Firebender just crossed her arms across her chest as she wondered what to say. She then unfolded them and said, “Yuri’s right, it’s horrible that your grandmother was sick, but it was also horrible of you to abandon us,” she said, and her choice of words was not an accident. Sitting back down on the couch, she pushed her back to the edge of the table. She probably wasn’t going to be reading again tonight. “Would you like a cup of tea?” That was the least she could do since he was here. She was still a bit torn about the whole situation, but with him here… it did sort of feel like old times. She gripped her cup a bit tighter for a moment before letting out a breath that she hadn’t realized that she was holding. She needed to stay calm, thought admittedly that wasn’t one of her strong suits and never had been.

“Why don’t you tell us what happened,” Ren’ai said. Obviously, his grandmother had been sick, and he probably wouldn’t want to talk about it. She would respect that, but she also wanted to hear more of why he had decided to quit as their manager and abandon his friends. I really should give him a break, she told herself, but she was still kind of hurt. She had been secretly blaming herself for his leaving all this time, and now she realized that it was her fault at all. It was just him being stupid! In a way, she was very relieved, but it also made her angrier. It was his fault that she had been blaming herself. Well, they still hadn’t have a Waterbender, and that probably was her fault. She’d have to ask Kamil to see if that wasn’t true, but she had no idea where he was. Also, her and Yuri’s relationship wouldn’t have deteriorated if she wasn’t such a horrible person. Stop it, she told herself, and took a sip of her tea while looking at Tadashi, trying to get her mind out of her own thoughts.

Through the tears he was fighting back, Tadashi registered a fluttering bright green shape flying at him and suddenly found himself wrapped in Yuri's arms. She must have come into the room right when he started crying. His first instinct was to hug her back, but he was so disappointed in himself for making a scene already, and so terrified that he would be going too far, that he just didn't move. Yuri stepped back and held his shoulders and said she was sorry about Grandma Sora — that's right, her family had met Grandma more often than Ren'ai and her parents — but that it didn't excuse ignoring them for months. Which... was right.

Tadashi didn't get the chance to apologise yet, though, since his firebending friend grabbed them both and shoved them — lightly — onto the couch while she shut and locked the door. She immediately went down the hallway and came back throwing a dishtowel into Tadashi's lap. Oh. Right. I should probably stop wiping my eyes with my zhen. He glanced at both Yuri and Ren'ai; neither of them seemed to have anything to say right at the moment, so he rubbed the towel across his face a few times to remove the tears, and then a few more times to balance out his circulation and sober himself up.

Just as he lowered the towel and looked back at Ren'ai, she finally spoke up again. The words she used seemed harsh at first, until he thought about. Dropping out of contact for several months? For all they knew Tadashi could have been dead, all while he was fighting to keep his grandmother from dying. He could see the similarities. But he still couldn't bring himself to actually explain in any great detail what happened. The girls could tell. They always were good at reading him. Ren'ai plopped down in her seat and started serving tea, like the semi-pro restaurant employee she hated being, and by the time Tadashi actually had his cup in hand and took the first sip, he felt much more relaxed. Not better, but able to explain himself at least.

"Yes, I can do that," he answered Ren'ai. "I think." He took a deep breath and then another sip of tea, and then set the cup down and stared at the coffee table. "It happened the night of the dinner party your parents threw for the team," but that made another tidal wave of awkward memories come back. That was the night he had met Liu, Ren'ai's... boyfriend? He had been devastatingly handsome and charming, very obviously in love with Ren'ai — which was good! — and immaculately brought-up. He had feigned great interest in Tadashi's life at the Air Temple and been a great conversation partner once he got over the initial shock... since Ren'ai had not said anything about a significant other. For all he knew, they weren't together anymore, since he'd been out of the loop for so long, but he didn't really want to bring it up since he didn't want to talk about his unwilling attraction to the young man.

"Grandma said she was having trouble breathing, so I had taken her home so that she could take her medicine. By the time I got her taken care of it was really late, and there didn't seem to be much point to seeing if anyone was still at the party, and I had to be back at the dormitories on the island, so I went there. And then the next day was when the anti-bending propaganda got so bad and Katashi and I were walking downtown after my classes, and we stopped to see my grandma and she was lying on the ground in a little pool of blood--" Tadashi wasn't aware that his voice was getting higher and faster or that he had started crying again. "--and we were afraid some Equalists had gotten her because she's the only bender in our family, but she had been coughing blood and she woke up and told us that her chest felt like it was on fire..."

A tinkling sound stopped Tadashi for a moment. He had been reaching for his tea but his hands were shaking so badly that he had knocked it over. "Oh my gosh, Ren'ai I'm so sorry, I'll clean it up," he babbled, looking on either side of him and grabbing the dishtowel, wiping up the tea before it got on anything besides the tabletop.

Ren’ai was glad that Tadashi seemed to have composed himself, but she was not the kind of the person to say anything about someone being emotional. She was very emotional. In this circumstance, she didn’t blame him one bit for being upset. The Firebender thought that she had a right to be upset, too, though, but didn’t feel that it would do any good. At least their friend – were they friends again? – seemed to understand why they were upset. Or, more correctly, why she was upset. No, that wasn’t right either. If she knew her best friend – and she did – she was mad, too, only controlling it because if she wasn’t level headed, apparently everything went to hell, as it had for the past several months. It was sad that it was like it, and she really was trying to be better about it all.

Ren’ai curled her legs underneath her as Tadashi explained what had been going on with his grandmother. A look of shock crossed her pale face. It really sounded horrible, and as bad a thought as it was, she was glad that her father hadn’t reached that age yet. He was some fifteen years younger than Tadashi’s grandmother. Immediately, she felt guilty about that. “That’s horrible,” the Firebender said her voice softer than normal as she brought her knees up and wrapped her arms around them. “Is she better now, though?” It made sense that the Air Acolyte would have been wrapped up with helping his grandmother, and keeping her alive it would seem, to worry about his friends, but it still strung rather horrible that he hadn’t even been able to confide in them.

Weren’t they friends, or supposed to be any rate? Didn’t you confide in your friends, and tell them what was going on in your life so that you could learn on them for support during the rough times? That was her impression on what friendship was supposed to be – not just all the good stuff. You had to take both the good with the bad. Ren’ai paused for a second, averting her gaze for a second before turning it back to Tadashi. “And you couldn’t tell us this, why? It’s horrible that your Grandmother was sick, it really is, and I’m glad that she recovered, but…” The Firebender turned her gaze again, as she could feel herself getting emotional. It was so hard for her to control herself, and sometimes, she felt that it was better to just let it go. She was an emotional persona, and everyone knew that. If they didn’t want to deal with that, then as far as she was concerned, that was their problem. It didn’t mean that she wouldn’t try.

“We’re friends, Tadashi,” Ren’ai continued, as she turned her gaze back to Tadashi. “That means we tell each other everything and confide in each other, and help each other through the rough times.” She glanced over at Yuri, thinking about how bad things had been for them. It seemed like a minor thing now compared to what their friend had been through the past several months. “You take the good with the bad, not just the good and then decide which of the bad you want.” She and Yuri hadn’t dealt too well with that lately, but they were both trying to move past all of the fighting that had happened. What would their Air Acolyte friend say if he knew what had happened between them? Surely, he’d disapprove, but would he feel guilty and say it was fault? That wasn’t true. It might have prompted it to start, but it wasn’t all Ren’ai’s fault, and that was the honest truth.

Yuri was not taken aback that Tadashi hadn’t hugged her back. It was understandable because she wasn’t always the touchy feely person all the time, but she had just felt so bad because his Grandmother was always so sweet. But maybe it wasn’t the time for her to be nice, and it was hard to hear about what he was saying about what had happened to her. Because Grandmother Sora was more of a mother to him and had raised him from a young age and well if her mom had been sick then she would have hated to leave her side until she was better. And yet when Ren’ai had pulled them inside she had just decided to just lean against the wall because she was in a dress and didn’t want for it to be winkled when her date arrived.

Her thoughts about what was going on kept on swinging in between anger at the whole situation. Because yes he had ignored them for months and their team had fallen apart and he was nowhere to be seen. And of course she had felt worried and then relieved to hear about Sora’s condition. Because of course she was upset that she had been ill and glad that she was feeling better. But was it asking too much to send a letter or to give them a call to tell them what was going on? And she was worried about Tadashi, because it could be possible that he had not been getting enough sleep because he had been nursing his grandmother.

A simple nod of her head because she agreed with her roommate about how friendship was supposed to work. She saw that the Air Acolyte had spilled his tea and was trying to clean it up with a towel. Without a second thought she knelt down next to the table and gently took the wet cloth from him. A compassionate look on her face as she looked up at him and a pat on the hand, it felt nice to be her calm old self.

“Tadashi, we are here for you. So please don’t shut us out.” She told him in a soft voice, because she didn’t have it in her to be mean to him. And it was true that it hit a soft spot in her because he had been so emotionally upset over what had happened. And she didn’t want to say anything that would set him off further.

Gentle hands took the towel from him and both girls took turns giving him words of encouragement and mild chastisement, and trying to calm Tadashi down. Not surprising coming from Yuri, mildly surprising coming from Ren'ai. The encouragement, that is; not that she wasn't a great friend, but usually she was more "Don't worry about it" and less "You're going to be okay." Regardless, he knew they were both genuine. He looked down at the tea stain — now cleaned up — and breathed deeply a few times.

"I know, I know," he said, trying to fight back another sob so that the girls wouldn't have to deal with him losing it again. "And ordinarily I would have, I would have told you guys, I might have even asked you for help. I didn't get the chance to finish my story." He sat back on the couch, took one more deep breath to collect his thoughts, and got back into it.

"My first split-second thought when I saw her lying there, with blood and sputum and stuff, was that I was going to be late for practise — that was the day of the first practise after we got knocked out of the tournament, remember? And then I felt terribly guilty for that, and at the same time freaking out because Grandma has always been this strong, stoic picture of health. So Katashi and I carefully got her back in bed, which was easy because she was pretty light — I realised she hadn't eaten, in fact she'd been picking at her food at the dinner party. I told Katashi to go get my mom, and while he did that I tried to get some easy food for her to eat. She kept patting my hand and insisting that--" A small sob escaped him but he rallied and went on, "--insisting that she wasn't hungry, she was fine.

"Mom and Katashi got there and Mom was the first one to notice that Grandma's fingertips were clubbed. It was why her hands had been shaking and she'd been having trouble getting around. Katashi found her walking stick under her bed, so we think she got out of bed and grabbed it but when she stood up she dropped it and that's when she fell. Her bruises... they weren't pretty, guys. It freaked me out. Mom gave me a long look and told me to go to bed, told Katashi to keep an eye on me, and she would stay with Grandma.

"When I woke up the next morning... well, you remember what had happened that night." Everyone in Republic City, he was certain especially his probending friends, would never forget Amon's attack on the Pro-bending arena. "The anti-bender sentiment was so high that Mom hadn't found a doctor that would diagnose and treat Grandma. And you guys know how well-known and respected Grandma is. If that doesn't tell you how bad the situation was..." He shook his head. "Well Katashi and I kept on eye on her, kept trying to get her to eat, wiped her brow when she was sweating from fever... Mom finally found a waterbending woman who came in secretly, and she told us Grandma had consumption. She did what she could, but she said that the infection was deep and treatment would take a long time."

As Tadashi continued to tell his story, he began to feel less and less helpless. Maybe this was what he had needed all along — to tell friends what was going on in his life. He had been afraid that reliving it would make it worse, but with Ren'ai and Yuri here it was actually making it better.

Of course, he hadn't gotten to the Battle of Republic City, or the worst hours of his life, yet.

Tadashi was still upset from retelling the story, and Ren’ai didn’t blame him. She would be upset if something like that he had happened to her father, though they’d never been really close. He wasn’t done yet, though, and so she just sipped on her team, quiet while he retold the story. The Firebender had been pretty sure once he’d shown up tonight and started explaining that it had happened the night of their practice, which is why he’d never showed. She didn’t want to think about that day, because it had been start of everything wrong in her and Yuri’s life, so he locked her amber eyes on the Air Acolyte, sipping her tea. Her pale hands were holding on a bit too tight to the cup, but she hoped that no one would notice. She didn’t want to go into why she felt so on edge. She only hoped that neither of them noticed. It wasn’t something she wanted to explain.

Ren’ai felt instantly guilty when Tadashi sat that his first thought was of being late for practice – not that his grandmother was lying there, bleeding. Of course, that night had been the night the arena had been destroyed. Of course, it was rebuilt now but it was hard image to shake, seeing it blown up, the smoking coming from the area. For people like her and Yuri, that was a symbol of… well, everything to them. The Air Acolyte continued to explain what had gone on, and how the anti-bender sentiment had grown so high it had affected getting his grandmother help. It had been bad on everyone, but the Firebender couldn’t imagine thinking you were virtually watching someone dying and that there was nothing that you could do. It was another reason to hate Amon, and to only find out that he was a bender himself. Pushing down her anger, she tried to concentrate on what Tadashi was saying – not that was helping keeping her emotions at bay.

When Tadashi seemed finished, Ren’ai finished off her tea, and stood up, dropping it in the sink. She thought for a moment she’d cracked it, but took a quick look and say the cup was unharmed. It really wasn’t Tadashi’s fault that she was so upset. She felt so stupid now for thinking his leaving them was her fault, not that she didn’t have proof that Kamil’s leaving wasn’t. She could only hope that their Air Acolyte friend didn’t want to know how their life had been afterwards, but thankfully, it didn’t seem as if he was done yet. A pang of guilt went through the Firebender at the moment. She shouldn’t be glad that the story wasn’t done yet. That meant things did not go better. It only reminded her of how horrible of a person she could be, but she squashed those down and concentrated on friends. Glancing at Yuri, she wondered when her date was and if she could stay through the whole story before her date arrived, but she looked back at Tadashi before she spoke again.

“I get the feeling you’re not done yet,” Ren’ai told him. “I know I talked to you, albeit briefly.” She neglected to mention that it had felt like he’d pretty much blown her off, saying something about being too busy. She hadn’t caught most of it. Now, she knew why he’d been so distracted, and she didn’t blame him. She wondered if his being around would have helped her and Yuri’s situation any. “What happened?” There had to be more. She wasn’t necessarily the most observant, but she wasn’t stupid, either. Drawing her legs up so that the bottom of her feet where on the couch, she pulled her legs to her chest as she waited for Tadashi to continue. She glanced at Yuri. Usually, she was the more emotional, but she was keeping a tight wall up right now, and wondered how her Earthbending friend would hold up during the whole story. She looked back at Tadashi, though, keeping a tight rein on her emotions… or as a tight of a reign on her outward emotions as possible. She hoped neither commented.

Yuri went into the kitchen so that she could rinse out the towel before the tea had a chance to stain it. Well to tell the truth it was one of the harder stains to get out, and it felt like she just had to do something because she had to keep herself calm because things had been hard on all of them these past months. Of course she was not even thinking when she went back into the living room and perched down on the edge of the couch and almost jumped out of her skin when she heard a knock at the door.

“I’ll get that.” She told her friends as she got up, unthinking she smoothed down her dress with her hands as she made her way to the door. Opening the door was not very complicated, but the fact that she would have to turn away the person that stood on the other side of the door was a given. Besides it was not like it was in her to blow off her friends for a good looking guy. Without wasting another moment she opened the door and was face to face with a tall muscular man with rich brown eyes. She told herself that she had to stay strong as she smiled at the sight of his handsome face. “I’m sorry but something came up and I will not be able to go out with you tonight. Would next week work for you?”

Of course she asked him if he wanted to switch the day of their date but he was not happy that she wanted to change it at so short notice. And he was sure to voice his displeasure of her not being able to give him a heads up when she was already fully dressed and ready to go out.

“Well it seems like I was wrong about you in the first place, and it seems like things happen for a reason. I would rather be home with my friends then going out with you, now get out of here before I drop kick you into the trash where you belong.” She told him in a stern tone as she closed the door on his face. It just took her a couple of deep breaths before she was her calm self again. It wasn’t that hard for her to go back to her friends after making sure that the door was locked behind her. She went and sat down on the couch next to Tadashi and crossed her legs the fabric of her dress felt just a little odd to her still but it wasn’t like she was going to change her outfit and miss out on any detail of what had happened in their friend’s life and how he was dealing with everything.

Tadashi looked away from the door that Yuri had just shut in — someone's — face, and back to the faces of Yuri and Ren'ai. Belatedly he remembered that Ren'ai had asked him what happened next. The incident at the door had thrown off his train of thought, but he collected himself and tried to remember back to the events of the last few months.

"Right. Uhm... Oh. The next month or so afterward was nothing but going to lessons at the Air Temple, and coming straight back to Grandma's house to take care of her. Mom and Katashi both had to pick up extra shifts to continue to pay for Grandma's treatment, so they took turns being there during the mornings and I stayed there all afternoon and evening. Grandma would slip into long bouts of fever even though she stopped coughing up blood. I didn't get a whole lot of sleep those days. Someone had to stay and keep an eye on her. I ended up getting a fever as well and then we almost weren't able to afford the doctor anymore.

"When I got better, I returned to Air Temple Island to explain my absence. But when I got there--" Tadashi's voice caught, and he swallowed before he went on. "Amon had begun kidnapping the Council members." As he was sure the girls remembered, even though Republic City was now under the command of President Raiko, the abduction of the then-Council was the beginning of Amon's siege of Republic City. And it culminated with the worst part of them all — the attack on and occupation of the Air Temple itself.

"Master Tenzin was nowhere to be found at first and we feared the worst, that he had been taken by Amon and robbed of his bending. An Equalist airship started coming toward the temple." Tadashi began speaking more quickly and his breathing became heavier as he went on, "We assumed they were coming for the rest of Master Tenzin's family. Some of the Acolytes went to protect and shelter them while others of us assisted the more elderly of Acolytes in evacuating the island. I was searching the dormitories for any of us that had not heard the call to evacuate when Avatar Korra and Master Tenzin arrived. Through the windows I saw Master Tenzin's family, including his freshly born son, getting onto their sky bison and fleeing. I was about to leave myself when more Equalists arrived in force. They were swarming the temple. I hid beneath a bed as several chi blockers came in and performed the same search I had just done. They didn't find me, but two of them remained outside of the door and I was afraid to leave... I was trapped."

Ren’ai looked up as she heard a knock at the door. That must be Yuri’s date, she thought to herself. She was glad that her best friend was dating more, and showing more confidence – it was good for her. Of course, she felt like the Earthbender was maybe dating a bit too much. To her, it seemed like too many dates to her. It was Yuri’s life, though, and at least she was dating. However, she was kind of surprised at the guy’s reaction! She did not blame her in the least for telling him off and shutting the door in his face. She did wonder if Tadashi would think that they’d switched places or something tonight, but honestly, what other reaction was she supposed to have? Obviously, he was not the sort of guy that Yuri should be going out with if he couldn’t understand that sometimes things happened. He was obviously a jerk. With that, Yuri went and sat back down on the couch in between her and Tadashi.

Ren’ai turned her gaze back to Tadashi. She felt bad about his grandmother, she really did. She felt for what happened, and as the Air Acolyte continued speaking, she found herself conflicted. On the one hand, she felt bad for resenting him at all for being out of contact. He hadn’t even gotten to the entire story yet, but the Firebender knew that time had passed between now and where he was in his story. She wasn’t sure what else had happened, of course, but… was it wrong to think that he should have said something to them? Was it wrong that she resented him for her blaming herself for his leaving, as well as Kamil’s? Chances are, Kamil might not be her fault, though she couldn’t quite shake feeling that it was. Perhaps she should put that behind her as the chances of them actually meeting Kamil again to settle things were slim to none. The Firebender knew that would be easier said than done.

Ren’ai mentally shook herself back to reality. The dark-haired young woman told herself to concentrate more on Tadashi, and less on herself. Wasn’t that where all of her problems with Yuri had come from? Looking at her Air Acolyte friend, she felt immensely bad for what happened to him – truly she did. It was horrible that her friend had to go through that! She was forced to remind herself that he was back in their life now, and that’s all that mattered. The Firebender knew that there was nothing that any of them could do to change the past, but it was still hard to deal with at times. She gripped her knees tighter, digging her nails into it. She didn’t know what else to do but sit here and listen to the story for as long as she needed to. He could ask them what was going on between them afterwards. “That’s horrible,” she said, her voice soft. “What happened next?” She wasn’t entirely sure she wanted to know.
