The Fire Lord and the Avatar began the Harmony Restoration Movement to restore the Fire Nation Colonies to their pre-war state by bringing any Fire Nation nationals back home, but for many of the citizens — of mixed Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom … Read more ›

Semi-Fancy Restaurant

Yuri was somewhat relived that Kamil was talking back to her. It did make her feel a little less nervous when he accepted her complement, and did not take it the wrong way. But when he did not say anything about the way that she looked without thinking her left hand went to her hair stroking back a loose lock behind her ear and her lips went into a slight pout of disappointment. It’s not like she was expecting to impress anyone, but it would have been nice to know that her efforts did make a difference. When she blinked the dark haired girl quickly schooled her face and forced a slight smile back onto her lips, hopefully the Waterbender that she was talking to did not catch her minor slip. Besides she had no idea if it was considered rude to compliment another girl while your girlfriend was sitting right next to you. The tall girl was just trying to be more confident and this was not helping things at all, she should have just worn pants instead of a dress and made a joke it was either pants or to come naked and covered in dirt. The sudden thought just made her giggle, and out of habit she covered her mouth and slightly bowed her head. It took a couple of minutes for her fit to subside.

“Sorry, I was just struck by a funny thought.” The female Earthbender told him with a more genuine smile on her lips. It felt so good to giggle even if it was at her expense, she did find his response a bit confusing. How could you not know if you had any brothers or sisters? Could it be that his relationship with his parents was much worse, than her and her mother’s relationship? Well that could explain as to why they were not here tonight. It was getting slightly easier for her to relax just a bit more when she thought of someone else’s problems.

“Wow this is a record; there must be a full moon out tonight. This is the most that I have ever heard my sis talk to a guy before.” Kira suddenly said now that the tall girl seemed to be in a better mood. Because he knew what his only sibling was attracted to, so he decided to just try to say something for her because he knew that his sis would rather not talk about herself. “Well there was this one time that she told off a guy for picking on me, but he would not stop and words would not work so she beat him up with her bare hands. Sure she doesn’t talk much, but at least she will have your back during a fight.”

“Well Kamil, if you want you could have mine.” Yuri told him as she looked down at her folded hands because her face felt hot and she was sure that it was bright red. At the moment she just wanted to die of embarrassment, she could have sworn that her parents would do it to her but nope Kira beat them to it. She was glad that a couple of locks of her hair were loose and shielded her eyes for a moment while she forced herself to take some deep calming breaths. When she raised her head her face felt warm with a slight blush but she would just have to deal with it. “But then again I would not trade Kira for anything, besides where would I find another little brother with as great right hook?”

“Yeah just because you made me spare with you, I lost count of how many times my friends made fun of me for learning to fight from a girl. Then again you always acted more like a big brother to me then a big sister. At least I can take care of myself now if I have to and not have my big sis bail me out of trouble.” The dark eyed nonbender decided to tease his sister back, because he could not help himself.

Amon's announcement over the radio had lifted Katsutoshi's spirits, which was a hard thing to do nowadays. The bar had been quite full at the time, playing some jazzy swing that he didn't dislike, when an interruption rang out. The music had been blasted high to compensate for the noise, and so the Voice that night was clear and bold. "Good evening, my fellow Equalists," it had said, and Katsutoshi had struggled to contain his surprise. The bar had fallen silent, making the Voice's message ever more clear.

"You no longer have to live in fear. The time has come for benders to experience fear..."

The broadcast had caused an uproar in the majority of the patrons. Amid the panicked clamor, Katsutoshi had smirked to himself over his warm sake, listening to the benders and bender sympathizers squabble, screech, cry out in anguish. It was exactly what Amon had wanted... And it was what Katsutoshi desired. No doubt the Voice had spoken all over the city, interrupting the homes of the complacent no matter what they were listening to, empowering the spirits of his followers.

So here he sat, enjoying the cool morning at one of his more liked cafes. It was extremely early - the shop had just opened, and there were no other customers save him. Still, he preferred the open space of the outdoors, even if it meant more people were likely to pass. As such, the businessman watched a street urchin hobble past, her hair so unkempt and spoiled, her clothing worn and dirty. There was something wrong with her little foot, and Katsutoshi's lip curled at the sight. He was pleased to see the poor girl hurry on her way. Probably off to snitch something, he sneered. Disgusting thing.

He turned his attention to the steaming cup on the table, its aromatic scent wafting up to him like a friend. Jasmine tea... How could he be expected to work without his morning cup? With spindly fingertips, he raised the glass and sipped, relishing the almost scalding temperature and hint of sweetness. It lingered after he swallowed, clearing his sinuses and cleansing the palate. As he reclined in the chair, he knew he probably looked old; it was a fact that he'd long grown to accept. He wasn't even thirty, but felt twice that. He was weak and tired and felt too airy to eat, even after a long day.

Still, his mind turned to business. They were expecting a package today, spurned by the radio announcement, and as far as he knew, they were simply flyers to be passed on to eager heralds. But his not knowing was a usual feeling, and, as usual, meant that "flyers" was just the tip of the iceberg. The submerged gold mine could be anything from masks to technology.

He sighed and sipped his tea again, nodding to a too-friendly passerby who greeted him.

Rong walked through downtown at a slow, casual pace. His simple white under shirt was damp from the sweat of his workout and covered with the dust that accompanied the earth bending he weaved in between sets during his workout. He'd just finished training and was experiencing all the symptoms that followed. His hands were still a little sore, as usual his calluses were ripped up from the weight and roughness of the day's serving of iron. His focus for the day had been his back muscles and they were tight with the pump from his workout. But the most glaring side effect of the training, was the inevitable hunger that set in afterward. The bearded young man didn't typically care to sit down and eat at a proper restaurant after a training session, he'd found that most of the owners of such places weren't typically too fond of entertaining such dusty company. Fortunately for him there were all sorts of food stalls on his way. Though he was hungry, he was in no rush to make a choice. It was his day off from the factory and he was enjoying the sunshine.

Though the muscle bound earth bender missed certain aspects of life in the countryside one thing that he loved about the city was the abundance of different cuisines. He'd particularly grown to love water tribe food and was eyeing a food stall that seemed to glimmer with fresh fish and roasted seal meat when his concentration was instantaneously broken by the unmistakable odor of komodo chicken. The words echoed in his mind causing a miniature wave of almost child like excitement to pass through him. His father never let him have komodo chicken meat growing up, "your grandfather didn't fight the damn war his entire youth for you to eat fire nation food," he'd always say. He'd always found his father to be an overly strict man, it was a war of people, the komodo chickens hadn't hurt anyone, they were only guilty of being delicious.

His mind made up, Rong turned his boots toward the food stand where the smell originated. The owners of the fairly large stall were serving komodo chicken kabobs on the skewer with tomato and ash banana slices. A variety of other foods as well, including dumplings, komodo rhino sausages, noodle soup and others. This young man however only had eyes for those kabobs. It looked like the food was popular too as the food stall had amassed a small line. The earth bender took his place in the line and waited patiently. As he did he untied a waterskin from his waist and began to drink from it.

Hunger. The scourge of all people who don't normally have the proper potential to find themselves whatever sustenance they need, namely anyone from the moment they are born to the first time they successfully cook something that is edible. The devastating effect on them usually being that tears and anguish take them over. And while Lykka is technically still in that category, as she can not cook something edible yet - but has tried - she is lucky enough to be old enough to earn money, and also to be living in a city where one can find food almost anywhere.

That luck was what made her smile widely as she waited patiently behind a customer at an Earth Kingdom food stall. She probably had enough money with her to go to an inn, or maybe even a restaurant, but from what she had got to see during her time in the city, eating alone in such a big kind of place was a bit saddening. It was definitely not something she wanted, her mood was always so bright that she'd actually feel more shame about being sad than actual sadness...

Not to mention that it was easier and cheaper to get her favorite in this food stall: roasted chicken-pig with rice, packed inside a bowl. Pig food had always been very delicious to her, as the great agrarian countries of the Earth Kingdom provided some quality breeding, but chicken-pigs had always been her favorite. There was truly no greater food than this to her, and she owed it to her family. Feeding her that back on Kyoshi Island was the best gift they had ever made to her... although allowing her to be here was an even greater gift, but she was not focused on that right now. Because it was about to be her turn. She stepped forward with a big smile, her head being around the level of the food being served. "Hello, sir !" She said with a very cheerful smile "I'd love to have some roasted chicken-pig with rice, if you would be so kind !"

While the man, whose mood turned brighter after hearing her kind order, began preparing the bowl, Lykka turned her gaze around and looked at the neighboring places. In the distance, some Fire Nation stall seemed to have quite the popularity, with that line of at least half a dozen of people waiting their turn... Was Fire Nation food that good ? Maybe she'd have to try it sometime. Or maybe she already had, but never truly realized. She'd have to think hard on it, and remember what delicious meals she'd had so far in the city.

Her order came up, and the smiling man handed the bowl to the little girl. She paid the price it had cost and took her meal, before turning around and preparing to leaving, chopsticks at the ready. Being able to hold that food was very satisfying, and it didn't take long to completely take her mind off of the unfortunate failure back at City Hall. In fact, when she took the first bite of rice, City Hall and its architectural wonders were totally nonexistent in her mind. Instead, she felt like she was being carried by a cloud of tastiness. Hunger could bite her, her stomach was feeling so good right now.

...But then curiosity slithered its way in. What was it about that other food stall ? What exactly could they sell that was more delicious than roasted chicken-pig ? To find the answer, she slowly walked over to the food stall with her bowl and chopsticks in hand, trying to be discreet.

Then she saw someone in the line she thought she knew, which made her smile once again, and even start running. "HEEEEEEY !!" The dark-skinned girl shouted while running towards the line. It was a good thing she had opted for green tomboyish clothes today, it made it easier to run while holding a bowl of food, and without dropping it. Otherwise she might have spilled some on herself and looked a bit ridiculous in front of several persons, including that acquaintance... Who was actually not an acquaintance, now that she could see him from up close. "Oh... Sorry, I mistook you for somebody." She said as her smile lost some of its width.

Niko was starting to get frightened that they were going to be told off for laughing so much. He had no idea how funny Airi was! Jokes are always funnier if they come from somewhere you weren't expecting, and the urge to burst out was ten times worse because he knew it would be inappropriate to laugh as loud as he wanted to. And finally, the last thing that made him want to laugh until he lost his voice was all the turmoil raging outside. Beyond the little bakery, there was something changing in the city. One week ago Niko would’ve said it was mostly political, but in light of recent events, it felt more like genocide. Something was dying, and to be in a warm place with friends, laughing and joking was enough to keep it off his mind for the morning.

There was a queer sadness that had seeped into his mind, overshadowing all the laughter. Niko cleared his head of those thoughts as Airi moved to wash her hands. He stepped out of the way and balled the rag in his hands pondering what she had said. What would she’ve used the money for? What would he himself use the money for? Well, most of it would go to the essentials, like rent and food, but what about what was left? He had never worked for money before and had no idea what to do with his share. He followed behind her to the oven and peered over her head into the blazing interior, which unleashed a blast of heat. Each perfect loaf sat right in a row like little rounded lumps of fluff and the smell was heavenly. All too soon the door was shut, and it was back to business. Little dots of perspiration had formed on the end of his nose and he wiped them away impatiently with the back of his hand. Sweat had also appeared on his forehead and the hair that stuck to it made the room feel even more stifling. Niko tried to push his hair back like he’d seen the Republic City elites do on the front cover of the papers, but he only succeeded in making the dark locks stick up like a boarcupine. On top of all that, he now had a streak of white flour going up his face and turning his hair powdery gray. If not for his straight back and vivacious face, he would’ve looked like an old man.

And it was in this state of utter and oblivious disarray that Niko leaned casually onto the counter. “Yeah, yeah, it’s pretty…uh--“ he searched for a word to describe it and came up with, happening. It’s certainly happening….whatever that means.” The city vernacular was still a bit of a mystery, but the more he used it the more confident Niko was that it didn’t mean anything. The whole place was an enigma, albeit a very exciting and thrilling enigma. A sudden thought made him think back to her earlier comment and he asked nonchalantly, “Say, what would you’ve done with the money? You know, if you were my age, with the whole town to explore. What’s the first thing you woulda done?”

Xiulan made her way down the street, headed towards her favourite little cafe for her morning cup of tea. Normally she'd just have the tea her mother brewed at the crack of dawn before she went downstairs to open up the bakery. This particular morning, however, the shop was opening at noon. Xiulan wanted to kill as much time as possible before heading back to work, and quite frankly the jasmine tea here was much better than her mother's would ever be.

As she reached the door of the cafe, she was surprised to see someone else sitting there so early. She eyed him discreetly yet curiously before slipping inside to order a cup of jasmine tea and a little sesame seed ball with a bright smile, despite the rather early hour. She examined the man as she waited by the counter for her tea. He seemed a fair bit older than her- not that that was a hard thing to do- and was clearly lost in very deep thought. Whatever he was pondering was likely important, judging by the look on his face, and she was wary of sitting near him. She eventually built up the courage just as her tea was ready, and grabbed the cup and sat near him, though not at the same table.

As she looked over at him again, she was overcome with curiosity. Xiulan came to the conclusion that the prospect of heading back early to work outweighed mild shyness. She sat there, bringing the cup to her lips and inhaling while mulling over what she would say for a couple moments before finally looking over at him again and speaking. "What're you drinking?"

Rong's stomach growled once more as he neared the front of the line. Recapping his waterskin he tied it back onto his belt and reached into his pocket. His hands were chalky and rough and callused, he felt particularly unclean at the moment and the feeling of the inside of his now dry pocket was less than pleasant. He withdrew his money and counted it. It looked like he had plenty. There was now only one person separating him from his delicious komodo-chicken kabobs and the young man was fixated.

Just then he heard an enthusiastic greeting that shook him from his thoughts. Looking down he spotted a girl, no more than a child, holding a meal. She looked like earth kingdom people from what the powerfully built man could tell. It looked like she had mistaken him for someone else. Rong looked down at her, he'd often been told that he could come off as intense, even aggressive at times and was almost always consciously making an effort to lessen this perception. "Quite alright young lady." He said with a nod and a warm smile. The man in front of him had received his order and moved on. Rong stepped up to the vendor. "I'll have... four, of those kabobs please." He said enthusiastically with raised eyebrows. The merchant chuckled and muttered something under his breath. Four of those kabobs was a lot of food but Rong had to hit macros for the day. Can't get big if you don't eat a lot of meat. The scruffy young man didn't let the vendor's muttering get to him though, someone was always making a comment about his body or his eating, training, or other related habits. He'd developed a thick skin.

The kabobs came to him wrapped in paper. They smelled wonderful and the juices that had dripped down the side of the package made Rong very happy. Taking only two steps away from the stall he stood there and began eating his first one.

*Food Stalls*

Lykka's eyebrows raised a little as she took another bite of her rice, about to walk away. This man had seemed familiar to her from afar, but up close it was obvious that he wasn't someone she had ever met before... The strangest thing was that the familiar face she thought she'd recognized, now that she thought about it, belonged to another kid that was around her age. Unless eating Fire Nation food had somehow made that young fellow grow many years older in a very short amount of time - in which case she could understand the success of that food stall - then she had it completely wrong.

She walked away only a little, lost in thought as she wondered how many more grown ups she would have to meet until she made a new real friend who would barely be a teenager. Even though she was definitely trying to grow up as fast as possible, hanging around people her age was something she kind of missed. Republic City was not the same as Kyoshi Island... but at least people knew how to prepare Roasted Chicken Pig with rice and curry. What she was eating was pretty delicious.

And speaking of delicious, as she looked up, the young girl noticed that the same man she had just mistaken for someone else was enjoying a kabob of some meat that smelled really good from this far. It was hard to recognize what kind he was having from just looking at the kabobs, or even by trying to figure out the smell... but it neither smelled nor seemed like anything she knew. It was pretty intriguing, considering it was Fire Nation food. Before she knew it, Lykka found herself staring at the package that this big man was holding.

'It's probably something rather exotic. Nothing smells that good and comes from the mainland... Wait, the Fire Nation is a bunch of big islands, so there's no real mainland.' She thought to herself. 'Then again, this is Republic City, not Capital City. This is the mainland, and if it comes from the Fire Nation then it is something exotic... For me anyway. I should go there someday, look at the buildings and stuff.'

Once she snapped out of it, the dark skinned girl tore her gaze away from the package and, suddenly famished by the view, took two huge bites from her rice. Nothing tasted better than roasted chicken pig, anyway. She didn't need to care about that exotic food... And yet, she absolutely had to ask. She got a feeling that if she didn't ask, she'd regret it growing up. "Uhm... Excuse me again, sir !" Lykka said shyly, with a smile. She wasn't too sure how much of a bother she would seem like, coming to talk to him again after mistaking him for someone else. "I was just wondering... What is it that you're eating ? It smells very good." She asked

The energizing Jasmine blend that the owner, Mrs. Jeon, was famous for was living up to its reputation. He felt himself start to wake up more and his mind kicked into gear, thinking forward to the day. His not-so-old bones stopped aching, and he finally got the strength to sit up in his chair. His posture was immaculate during the day, mostly thanks to this specific blend. (Though he occasionally liked to indulge in lemon-ginger or even bergamot rind tea.)

His keen eyes followed a couple walking in the opposite direction. Neither poor nor wealthy, as far as he could tell. They seemed well-off for their old age, and he inclined his head in satisfaction, letting the aroma of the tea clear his mind. The steam bathed his face and almost made him feel his age.

A glance caught a young woman walking his way, and he did his best to show her that the rest of the quiet city was far more interesting than she. Even in his peripheral he knew she was watching him. Still, he wasn't bothered and turned his gaze to the sky as he sipped his tea. She was a pretty girl, but young. Still a child, in some peoples' eyes. Perhaps of Earth-Kingdom descent, given her hair and what he supposed were green (or were they gray?) eyes. Very attractive, though. Like a girl that comes in a dream...

He was absurdly thinking about that when said girl came outside once again. His first thought was that she was going to make off with such nice china - Just like a peasant would... - but she sat down at the adjacent table, and was clearly paying close attention to him. That was annoying. She could have sat anywhere - hell, she could have stayed inside! But no, she had to come sit out here and ogle the older man... Katsutoshi didn't even consider himself attractive, unless one liked the businessman look.

Finally, after he decided she was just an obnoxious teenager and began thinking of the Equalists again, the girl spoke. "What're you drinking?" she said in a tone that was neither conversational nor shy.

He looked directly at her and a moment of clarity came to him. Katsutoshi... knew her? The wavy hair, the pale eyes... It took only a split second to frantically keep down any rising surprise as he realized this girl was an Equalist. So, with a careful mask on his face that revealed only indifference, he inhaled through his nose and spoke. "Jasmine tea with a bit of sweet flag and cinnamon. It helps me wake up for the day."

The herbs were blended well enough into the tea that their flavors simply enhanced the aroma of the jasmine. Once again, such excellent work from the Jeons. Katsutoshi wasn't much for small talk, but if this girl was, in fact, a trainee, there was no reason not to bring up the broadcast. "Did you listen to the radio the other night? There was a special broadcast..."

He purposefully kept his words vague, on the off chance that he was wrong.

(He wasn't wrong.)

Airi smiled politely when Niko managed to describe the city as "happening". She didn't really get that term either, though she guessed it could be considered short for "stuff is happening at the moment" or something like that. What happened around, she had little idea about. Clubs, street performers, industry, probending and gang activity. At least, that's all she knew that happened around here seeing as the only time she ran around town was for errands, seeing the few friends she had or heading to probending practice. Could she consider those things happening?

Pushing off that odd thought to the recess of her mind when Niko asked her a question. She puffed her cheeks and looked up at the ceiling, letting out the air when she thought of an answer. "Now that I think of it, I don't know what I would do with it if I was in your position. Perhaps I'd buy candy or go to a probending match... orrrrr I'd look for random stuff. You know, trinkets and whatnot, but then again, I'm a girl. I'd probably buy some fabric, too, to make some clothes. I'm not quite sure what people wear outside of the city, but I bet it'd be different so a change of clothes would be nice." She rambled on, forming her freshly made dough into oblong shapes on a wide pan, going to let it rise.

"Does your mom not want you to help her?" she asked (only after the words left her mouth did she think the question could be invasive) though not able to spare him a glancing look at she shaped the last of the dough.

Liu Zhon acknowledged the various greetings and introductions with smooth words of thanks and appreciation, topaz eyes alert to those around him. It was a given that there likely some resonant lack of welcome to be found in Ren'ai's family, an understandable revelation given the nature of his abrupt and very much unconventional meeting. The fact of it was that Liu Zhon had not gone through the traditionally expected manner of requesting permission to court the firebending woman, instead simply going for it with the new-age mindset many of his generation had embraced with such tenacity.

Indeed, sinking into his chair to become comfortable and looking to those others seated around him, he could not help but notice the disparity in their varied appearances. Some wealthy, some not, some unbothered by their presentation. It was a veritable myriad of personalities and collectives, joined together in singular harmony under a shared directive: To celebrate the Dragon Hawks' recent victory.

Reaching out calmly, he took for himself an appetizer, white teeth penetrating the outer flesh to bite down into the inner meat. The seafood was delicious, filling his mouth with a succulent, distantly salty flavour that he could very easily come to love. As he swallowed down the morsel of food, he became aware of a question directed at him from what appeared to be one of Ren'ai's siblings. Turning to the boy, Liu Zhon arched a brow in curiosity. When he concluded, the duelist flicked his sunset gaze to his girlfriend, as if seeing if she would field the answer.

Finding her holding a tight-lipped silence, Liu Zhon opted to tell him. "We met in the park," he confessed with a wry smile, "and I suppose my sheer hotness took her feet out from under her." The truth of their meeting veiled in the words, the older man smiled slyly at his partner, leaning over to plant a small kiss on her cheek.

"I'm a very, very lucky man, my little friend." He said seriously to the younger boy. "Your sister is an amazing woman, in many different ways." Liu Zhon finished seriously, respect in his eyes as he uttered the words. Ren'ai's firebending had taken his breath away the first time he had seen it, and it had only increased its capacity to amaze him in the days following.

Shifting his attention from his girlfriend, Liu Zhon peered over at Tadashi. "Tadashi, was it? You're an Air Acolyte, correct?" His voice retained the velvet caress as always, though now with a hint of intrigue. "Would you be willing to tell me a little about the kind of life that entails?"

The scent of the tea called to Xiulan, and she took another sip just as Katsutoshi responded to her query. "Jasmine tea with a bit of sweet flag and cinnamon. It helps me wake up for the day. She swallowed the tea with a sigh and turned her head to face the man. "Another Jasmine fan, I see," Xiulan noted with a grin. " I thought I recognized the smell of cinnamon." At least we have some common ground now. She thought to herself, grabbing the seat of her chair and pushing herself around so she was seated looking at him. She figured this would last a little longer than polite banter and she might as well find a spot that wouldn't make her neck seize up from looking over her shoulder.

"So did you listen to the radio the other night? There was a special broadcast..." He asked. She brightened a bit at that, wracking her brain trying to figure out what broadcast he was talking about. There was a really interesting report on Anthropology she heard a couple days ago, and just last night there was info leaked on Hiroshi Sato's newest Satomobile model.

Xiulan blanched at his words as soon as she took in their full meaning. The broadcast. The broadcast telling the general populace of the revolutionary movement who's leader inspired a special elite taskforce solely to stop him. And Xiulan just so happened to be a part of that revolutionary movement. Sure, he could just be curious, wanting to make conversation about Amon's radio hijacking, but most of the benders and bending sympathizers avoid the whole Equalist subject all together, they're so afraid of him.

What if he knows? Her breathing picked up speed. Dear God, she wasn't ready for this. Not even six months training with the Equalists and she was about to go to prison? That was really the only logical explanation. Obviously he was a Republic City undercover cop, come to take her down to headquarters and lock her up and throw away the key. Well, maybe not; but it couldn't hurt to be too careful. She had looked far too interested when he asked about the radio,

"Oh, I don't really listen to the radio," She said with a nervous chuckle, eyes trained on the table like it was the most interesting thing in the world. "Boring, boring stuff..." She trailed off, her face growing more pale- if that was even possible- as she realized how stupid she sounded. At a loss for how handle the situation, she popped the entire sesame ball into her mouth and focused on chewing, praying she would just evaporate. When that didn't work, she decided to change the subject, clearing her throat and swallowing the last of the treat, tasting nothing. "So... How about that last pro bending match, huh?" Xiulan offered a weak smile. Why couldn't she mystically develop social skills?

Everyone had been nice to Liu so far, which made her happy. Tadashi was acting a little weird, though, and was Yuri. Neither had even really acknowledged him since her boyfriend had come in. She had told them both that he was coming, hadn’t she? She knew her family would have been surprised, because she hadn’t mentioned. No one had said anything yet. All the dark-haired young woman would hope that they would be on their best behavior tonight, but she wasn’t counting on it. They never were, and every time she met up with them one of them said something to ruin everything. Her brothers understood her frustration. She didn’t envy Sukoshi, because it was would be several years before they could move out. The rest of them had gotten out first chance they could, something her parents didn’t understand, and never would. How could they?

Ren’ai had been slightly worried about Sukoshi’s question for them, though. While she saw nothing wrong per say about the circumstances of their meeting, it would spark a discussion with her parents that she didn’t want to have. It had been very… different, you could say. How many girls could say that they met their boyfriend in a fight, one that they had lost? Of course, Liu had handled it brilliantly, and his response caused her to giggle a little as a smile crossed her face. Part of what he said was true. They had met in the park, and she had her feet taken out from underneath her. Of course, that was because the attacks had overwhelmed her, and caused her trip. Of course, no one here had to know that if they didn’t already. She knew she had told Yuri about it, but her mind blanked when she asked herself if she had mentioned all of this to Tadashi before. It was kind of annoying, but a kiss on the cheek from Liu took thoughts from her mind.

A smile crossed Ren’ai’s face, but it was accompanied by a blush as Liu complimented her to Sukoshi. At 11, he really didn’t care, but she did. His words were serious and respectful. He meant every word, and that’s what made that blush creep on her cheeks. Her little brother, of course, just rolled his eyes. “Sure,” was all he said. “I guess she’s pretty cool.” He didn’t care about all this mushy stuff. He wasn’t interested in girls yet, so her boyfriend’s words had no effect on him. She appreciated them, though, every single word. The smile wouldn’t leave her face. Part of her wanted to turn around and see what her parent’s reaction was, because the tables weren’t far enough way that they couldn’t have overheard the conversation. The other part of her just didn’t give a damn. She liked Liu, and as lucky as he said he was, she felt equally so. Things were going well so far, and soon, Liu had decided to strike up Tadashi in a conversation, and she was glad that he was trying to talk to her friends.

Ren’ai just sat there. With Yuri talking to Kamil, and Liu trying to talk to Tadashi, she wasn’t sure who to talk to. As long as things stayed going well, that was fine with her. She took another sip of her water, and could hear her family talking behind her, but not enough to make out what they were saying, though she was sure it had something to do with her and her new boyfriend. That was fine. They could say whatever they wanted. It was then that she was reminded that she wasn’t sure she had told Tadashi. She searched her mind of the past couple weeks, but didn’t remember telling him. There was no way that she had forgotten. He was her friend. She knew she had told Yuri everything, but the Earthbender lived with her. She had really only seen Tadashi during practices when he showed up. She would have to talk to her Air Acolyte friend later, and if she had forgotten, then she’d need to apologize.

At that moment, a waitress came in and took away the appetizer plates. Part of her felt that bad that Liu hadn’t had a chance to have more of it. Then again, he was late, so it was all to be expected that he wouldn’t have had a chance to eat as much of it as he might have wanted to. A moment later, a couple of wait staff came back in carrying trays with plates of food. They served to her table first, and were soon came back with the rest of the food and served her father’s table. The food smelled delicious. She took a deep breath, breathing in the smell of it. The wait staff then went around refilling drinks. They were obviously trying to be very attentive, hoping that her father would give them a good tip. She highly doubted it, but she gave them best wishes to trying to get her father to throw away money like that. Chances are, he would give the bare minimum and be done with it. She wasn’t worried about that, yet. She took a bite of her food before taking a drink of her water.

[tag: Ren'ai, Yuri, Kamil, Liu Zhon]

Sabbe sattā sukhi hontu. Sabbe sattā abyapajjha hontu. Sabbe sattā sukhi hontu. Sabbe sattā abyapajjha hontu. Sabbe-—

With a shock like lightning, Tadashi came out of his self-induced stupor at the sound of his name spoken by an unfamiliar voice. His head snapped up a little quicker than it should have, causing a painful but subdued pulse right on his neck vertebra. Half a second later he realised that it was Ren'ai's boyfriend, Liu, who was speaking to him; another half second and he registered the question that was being asked of him. The temptation to take another drink of water to calm his nerves was almost undeniable, but a peripheral glance showed that his glass was empty. Apparently he'd been, somewhat mechanically, drinking it while he'd been reciting his mantras.

Tadashi cleared his throat to answer, but just then the wait staff came and took away his appetizer — untouched. Inwardly he cringed a little bit, even though they were pot stickers and he didn't care to eat them; Tasukete had spent quite a bit of money and time putting this together for Ren'ai and her friends and he felt bad about not eating anything. Fortunately he knew he was getting a vegetarian main course, because Ren'ai had asked him about it; he just hadn't known about the appetizers. How often did he get to eat in a swank place like this?

"Um," he said to Liu as the wait staff walked away with his untouched food. Brilliant start, Tadashi, he mocked himself. "It depends on what you want to know. I'm not really a full-time Acolyte. I don't live on Air Temple Island with Councilman Tenzin; I guess I'm what you'd call a 'day student.' I live with my grandmother," he indicated Sora, who promptly stopped staring at Tadashi and closed her eyes, pretending to be asleep again. "But we're divided into classes based on our primary areas of interest, with the younger Acolytes such as myself taking more shorter classes so we are exposed to many areas of study, and the older Acolytes taking fewer, longer classes or sometimes just working in one aspect of the monastery for the whole day if they have received a specialisation. One of the elders, sometimes even Councilman Tenzin, speaks to us at the beginning of the day and we meditate on whatever facet of old Air Nomad culture we are studying that day. In fact we meditate between each class, the better to retain the knowledge we have learned and simultaneously clear our minds for the next subject to be presented to us."

In a way Tadashi was grateful to the young man for introducing a topic about which he could actually speak (i.e. babble), since otherwise there was going to be all sorts of awkward. Tadashi was already doing all he could to keep at bay the comparisons he kept wanting to make between Liu and himself; projecting barriers between his mind and the unhealthy "invading" thoughts as his instructor, Narayan, had taught him, he found that focusing on the conversation rather than the other participant in the conversation made his life easier.

And yet. As much for Ren'ai's sake as for his own — that was his story and he was sticking to it — he analysed certain things about this man, trying to see if there were any chinks in his armor, flaws in his facade. He couldn't find any, yet, which was just about unbearable. He'd never admit it to Ren'ai (he could hardly admit it to himself), but he was simultaneously jealous of Liu and attracted to him. And disgusted at himself for being attracted. And angry at himself for being jealous. And guilty because of all of it.

Shrugging nonchalantly, his face ignoring all his thoughts, he went on, "It's enlightening, and I know that sounds very cliched but it really is. I find myself very happy and peaceful when I'm practising the Nomads' old ways. I think that if they didn't have the pattern down right, they were awfully close to getting it." He grinned — and it was only slightly forced — and then asked, "What about you, Liu? What's your life entail? Besides Ren'ai, of course." Maybe he could get comfortable talking to this guy yet. As he waited, the wait staff returned and set a wonderfully aromatic dish in front of him — asparagus rice pilaf and a bowl of sambar. FINALLY. REAL food!

Kamil did not miss the look of disappointment Yuri had, and after said realization thought back to the words that had been exchanged up until now. Had he said something out of line? Or...or, oh! He thought he knew what the problem there was, but he couldn't really fix it now without it sounding forced or from out of nowhere. He was knocked out of his thoughts when the girl suddenly giggled and he'd be lying if he said he wasn't curious in the slightest as to what was so funny. Fortunately for him he didn't need to ask. Unfortunately for him he didn't get all that much of an answer, but he didn't mind. At least she seemed happier than she did before.

His attention switched from Yuri to her brother when he started talking, listening quite attentively. Was it really that unusual for the Earthbender to talk to a guy for so long? He mostly guessed that the lack of communication was his fault for not really attempting all that many conversations with her. Partially because he was more into practice at the time, and partially because of his schedule. He did find a bit of amusement in the short story Kira told him about his sister beating a guy up for picking on him. He honestly did not doubt her fighting capabilities. During practice he only saw a small amount of what she could do. One could only imagine how much further that extended.

Kamil laughed at Yuri's words. It really wasn't that hard to tell she was embarrassed. She did seem to calm down a bit, though she was still a little red in the face. It was amusing, listening to the siblings talk back and forth and Kamil found himself wondering just what it was like, exactly. Having a sibling. He didn't allow himself to dwell on those thoughts for very long, though. He'd have plenty of time to think about 'what if's' after the celebration.

"Well then, sounds to me that Yuri has quite a few good traits. A caring older sister, in her own way, an adapt fighter, great Probender and pretty all in one package. With traits like that you should be beating guys off with a stick." A pause. "...not literally of course. Unless they're jerks. Then yes literally." He shrugged. "I don't know you that well, but what little I do know does make you sound like a pretty wonderful person. I bet Ren'ai and Tadashi think so, your brother clearly thinks so, you should think so, too." He grinned. He ended up going on a bit of a tangent there, but he did genuinely think that. Why not voice it while he was at it?

Saya had lost interest in the conversation between Kamil and his teammate quite a while ago and somewhat forced herself to look around herself a bit more. She still listened in on the conversation from time to time, rolling her eyes at certain parts - mostly when Kamil spoke - but another ongoing conversation caught her ear. More specifically, the one with the fancy guy that arrived last and that other girl. The Team Captain. She didn't bother with names. During that conversation she had to stop herself from getting too expressive, but she could not stop herself from sticking her tongue out and just barely suppressed a noise. She did not do well around couples, and definitely not overly affectionate ones. It was a bit childish of her, but she couldn't help it. Maybe she should just stick to listening to Kamil and that other Earthbender girl and her brother instead. She needed to behave after all. Then again, the bald guy that had spoken to her first had started talking and that did sound pretty interesting.

The Earthbender was a little surprised when the appetizers were suddenly taken away. It felt like they were barely here, she hadn't even really gotten the chance to try that many! Had they been that late, or did time really fly that fast? Kamil didn't seem all that fazed by it. Then again, the man didn't really eat all that much so having the extra food taken away from him might have very well been a blessing. Either way, the appetizers had gotten replaced by the main course, so there wasn't really that much to worry about. If anything she would like to enjoy the food. Who knew when she would be able to eat like this again? When asked, she decided to ask for a different drink and shoved her refilled water to Kamil. The water had been starting to make her slightly nauseous. Her phobia worked in strange ways. Once she got her new drink she allowed herself to try the food, her face brightening up considerably at how good it tasted.

A part of Yuri was glad that Kira was doing most of the talking for her. But was it asking for too much for him not to embarrass her so much? But what really got her was that Kamil was actually complementing her. She had tried her best to just be calm and not to blush anymore. She of course had no way of knowing what the blue eyed man would say next. The girl in question was just taking a sip of water when he started to say that she had some good traits. Her instincts told her that it was best to tell him to stop because it was getting a little bit embarrassing for her. And besides she did not want for his date to get mad at her and demand that Kamil quit the Dragon Hawks. But in her shock she had swallowed the water the wrong way when he had said that she was pretty. Quickly she covered her mouth with her napkin as her body tried to get rid of the water that had went into her lungs.

Kira was glad that the Waterbender seemed like he enjoyed talking to him and Yuri. The younger man had a shocked look on his face when Kamil said that his sister was pretty and had to beat guys off with a stick. He was about to say something when he looked over at his older sibling. It seemed like she was having trouble. Without a second thought he slapped her hard on the back. Opps he had hit her maybe a little too hard. Or at least it had sounded loud to him. Relief washed over him as his sister stopped coughing and started to breathe normally.

“Don’t make me worry about you, brat. Who knows maybe that was a good example of why you should stay away from water.” Kira told Yuri in a soft whisper, before turning to the guy that was responsible for his sister’s state. “Wow how many times did my sis hit you in the head during practice? By accident of course, I don’t think she would want to be mean and ruin your looks.”

A hard slap on the back jolted her, but it did the trick. Her eyes had watered a little bit but she blinked a couple of times and she was fine. Clear green eyes met her brother’s dark brown orbs. A light smile touched her lips, although her back was smarting from the slap but it had a dual purpose. The pain helped her focus her train of thought. Kamil must have been joking, she had just been lucky in their last match. True she was decent at holding her own, but she did get knocked into the drink. But come on she was not pretty, he must just be being nice. But it was Kira’s words that made her pipe up.

“Low blow there Kira, insinuating that I would be wasting my time practicing illegal moves that I cannot use during a match.” She told her younger brother before turning her gaze upon the man that was to blame for mixing up her emotions. She was still blushing a little from his words. “Please ignore Kira, he was just being a pain. And thank you, but I’m not really…”

Yuri was not able to finish talking before a delicious piece of meat with red pepper sauce was shoved into her mouth. Hot and spicy just the way she liked it of course she had to wipe off a little bad of sauce that was on her lip with her napkin before placing it back on her lap. She shot a glare at the person that just did that. As she slowly chewed the food enjoying the taste, she was ready to become an only child.

Kira just laughed at his sister’s words. But hearing her talk so much to this guy that they both did not know very well was just well irritating. So he did what he had to just to shut her up. With his shop sticks he picked a piece of meat from the plate in front of Yuri. Quickly he slathered it in the spicy sauce and shoved it into her mouth. Oh the look she gave him was great. If he had been anyone else he would be running from his life. “It’s good to go ahead and eat while the food is nice and hot.” He told the man that was getting under his skin.

Rong used a scrap of the wrapper to wipe the grease from his mouth. It was all that he had hoped it to be. The meat was juicy and tender, the vegetables were firm and crunchy on their fire toasted outsides and soft and flavorful on their insides. Finished with the first one he placed it's skewer underneath the other three and gave a small, satisfied sigh.

Suddenly he heard a little voice speaking to him. Derailing his nourishment train the bearded earth bender looked down at the girl that stood behind him. She was a dark skinned, feather haired girl. Judging by her clothes she was fairly tomboyish and at least wasn't wealthy. A normal little one from what he could tell. Clearly of Earth Kingdom descent, he immediately wondered if she could earth bend. "They're komodo chicken kabobs." He said enthusiastically. He squatted down to her level and held them out so she could see. The muscular man was again attempting to come off as friendly as possible. He was a big man and people sometimes judged his personality based solely on the fact. He tried very hard to avoid such inferences. "Would you like a piece? You can't get this stuff in most of the Earth Kingdom, but it's delicious. A little spicy though." He said offering it to her with a little shake of the bundle.

Rong was in no hurry, the weather was nice, it was still early in the day, and he really had nothing to do except maybe bathe. It suddenly struck him that the girl seemed to be alone. She wasn't terribly young so it didn't immediately concern him, but it did spark his curiosity. Still, no need to say anything. He didn't want to be rude.

Liu Zhon listened with rapt attention to Tadashi's explanation, his easy smile never leaving his lips despite the exclamations of surprise he wanted to give. To many, the concept of sitting there and listening to an air acolyte ramble about his life in the temple would not be considered a valuable time consumer. Indeed, the very notion of the air acolyte's life was not to the liking of many, who simply refused to partake in the traditional manner which the enlightened monks took to their training. But for Liu Zhon? It was intriguing, fascinating. Everything Tadashi said was something new to him, something... broadening. He simply soaked up the information like a sponge, retaining it without issue. It was a largely impressive idea of living, even if Tadashi seemed a little nonchalant about it in his ramblings.

Tadashi's grandmother, a rather formidable looking woman, caught the Firebender's attention for a few moments as he eyed her for signs of life. The woman, he surmised, was rather more devious than many would give her credit for in her venerable age. For Liu Zhon, who'd dealt with traditionalist firebender grandparents and water tribe ones alike, it was not a new thing to consider the manner in which the elderly molded the younger. In fact, he would almost put down money on the idea that the grandmother was the driving force behind Tadashi — in many more ways than simply one.

As Tadashi's attention flipped from himself, to Liu Zhon, the firebender blinked in consideration of the question asked. What a loaded answer! Where to begin? He cleared his throat, sitting back some as he considered. "My life is a little more boring than yours, Tadashi, admittedly." He took the moment to glance at Ren'ai and murmur, "I trust your judgement; order what you like. Make sure it has wine, though, mn? It's a celebration. We'll toast." Another kiss to her cheek, then he turned with an apologetic smile back towards Tadashi. "Pardon me that little interlude. Yes, my life! Well, not quite as eventful as an acolyte, admittedly." He smiled at him winningly, no sarcasm in the gesture.

"I work as an accountant in my day to day, for the banks and private businesses, and in my spare time I am a duelist." He took no shame in this admittance, saying it quite clearly, for all to hear. "My father's family was traditionally part of the Fire Nation Army, so combat is a tradition for us. My Mother is from the southern water tribe, but she's always been fascinated. I was raised to be able to firebend in a combat situation — though now, my only chance for that sort of thing is my aspiration towards becoming a pro-duelist."

Liu Zhon took a sip of water, lips barely touching the glass, tipping it back with educated manners before placing the glass down gently. "I know dueling isn't an official sport, but by the spirits, it's a fun time. There's nothing more exhilarating than defeating an opponent with no rules, no boundaries. Maintaining honour is an honourless bout, flooring someone with raw power and skill. It's true, primal expression." The Firebender shrugged modestly, "I win more often than not, and my parents support my choices. My Father and Mother did well for themselves, and their home is rather large and empty without me there. Though, they're glad I made my own way." Liu Zhon smiled companionably, "but I'm still intrigued by your life. Is there more you could tell me?"

"I knew there was something about you I liked, Liu!" Sora interrupted triumphantly, making her grandson jump. "My mother was also from the Southern Water Tribe, and my father was part of the Fire Nation Army — for a few weeks, anyway." She chuckled a bit, primarily because of an inside joke that nobody, not even Tadashi, would get. "And dueling is an honourable tradition. You should be very proud of your heritage and your decisions, Liu Zhon." She took her glass of water and raised in toast, first to Liu, then also to Ren'ai. Tadashi hurriedly joined it, raising his own just-refilled glass with a look that spoke simultaneously of amusement and utter confusion, and then taking a long sip. As Sora pulled her own glass toward her lips she added, "And I would be honoured to duel you sometime." Tadashi nearly spat out his drink but managed to regain his composure quickly.

"Ah, that's better. Now where was I? Yes! Now my grandson here, he used to be a real troublemaker, Sora went on, setting her glass down, as Tadashi turned an incredulous look on her. "He didn't have the same interests as his brother, and his brother had such an unusual drive for his preferred way of life, that he decided he had to find something else to be good at. Right now he's a taxi driver. And he's a good boy. For his own life, he has made good decisions and is proud of his heritage, just as I suggest you be. Why, if you just look at him--" Sora cut herself off, and gave her grandson a scrutinizing look for several long seconds, before saying, "Whoops, nope, this one's Tadashi. Forget everything I just said. My goodness where's the restroom?!?" With some slight assistance from Tadashi's shoulder, she got herself up and made her way cautiously toward the reception area of the restaurant, cursing once again her decision to leave her canes at home just for appearances.

Tadashi turned a rather sheepish grin to Ren'ai and Liu Zhon, trying his best to ignore everyone else for the time being. I'll deal with their reactions later, he decided, wanting desperately to slam his forehead into the table but knowing better than to do so. "Sorry about that. Everything my grandmother said was true — even the dueling part — up until she tried describing me. That's my twin brother Katashi."

He stirred a spoon through his sambar, waiting for it to cool further, while he granted Liu the best answer that he could. "Hmm. Well, I have to say that the Air Temple is a great deal like all of us here, in a way," he gestured expansively with his other arm at the room in general. "Since the Nomads are no longer with us, the values and traditions of their culture are carried on by people from different parts of the rest of the world. That's another reason why it was always so appealing to me. My grandmother and her parents spent almost their entire lives working toward cooperation between the Three Nations, and they moved here the moment that Fire Lord Ozai and Avatar Aang announced the establishment of Republic City. I've been here my whole life and I've seen how a dream of peace and brotherhood shared by so many people can be fulfilled, but to me it's even stronger to see it in the metaphorical bringing back to life of the Nomads' teachings." Tadashi suddenly realised that he was babbling again, and almost apologised again, but Liu's face expressed such genuine interest that it forestalled his apology.

The Acolyte took a bite of sambar and considered it, swallowed as quietly as he could, and then went on, "We also try to maintain an open mind in regards to the spirits, as the Air Nomads were a monastic order and revered the spirit world. I know that probably sounds silly in a day and age like ours, but I can't help but think that if the spirits hadn't protected us in the past, we wouldn't have survived to build ourselves up to what you see today. Grandma says that before she was born, her tribe used to worship a whole family of spirits. Nowadays she says the politicians all worship themselves. Whatever that means." He grinned and took another bite of his stew.

Ren’ai sat in between Yuri and Liu as they carried on their conversations. Liu was talking with Tadashi, and Yuri with her brother, Kira, and Kamil. Her best friend was ignoring her and her boyfriend completely. She didn’t blame her for that. It was in her nature. Most guys made her uncomfortable, and he had never met Liu before. She expected the Earthbender to ignore him. She was glad that her boyfriend was talking to her one of her friends, especially since that friend she wasn’t entirely sure that she had told him that he was coming. However, what the Firebender didn’t expect was that they would both ignore her. Well, at least Liu wasn’t ignoring her completely, but still… Neither of her friends or her boyfriend were including her in their conversation. So, all she could do was sit there at eat.

Liu spoke to her, saying that she could order whatever she wanted. Well, of course, and she was about to tell him that wine was going to be offered later with desert for those who wanted for the toast. Her farther had already thought about it, assuming that she wanted to make toast for their victory. She was the Captain, of course. However, as soon as he said, he was back talking to Tadashi, and she was back with no one to talk to. A small sigh escaped her lips, but the dark-haired young woman took a sip of her water and went back to eat the meal the wait staff had put in front of everyone a short while ago. The food was good, and from what she could see, everyone seemed to be enjoying it. Her father had chosen well, but then again, this was the kind of thing that her parents did well.

Again, Ren’ai’s thoughts drifted to the fact that she was there, at a victory party for her team and no one was talking to her. No one was trying to include her in their conversation, not even Yuri, her friend since childhood. She expected the Earthbender to ignore Liu, but ignore her? All she could do was sit there, and listen to the conversations going on around her as everyone else had fun talking with someone else. Sukoshi the only other person no talking to someone, but he was too far for her to have a conversation with, not with the other conversations going around her. He was sitting on the other side of Yuri’s brother, Kira, who was sitting next to his sister. She could always go to the other table and talk to her family, but what fun would that be? Besides, she wanted to sit with her friends, her team.

As she ate, Ren’ai listened to the conversations going on around her. Liu and Tadashi were still talking about the Air Acolytes. Her boyfriend seemed fascinated by it, and of course, her friend was more than happy to oblige. It was a smart move on Liu’s part, because it was the one real topic that he would enjoy talking endlessly about. Somehow, the topic changed to dueling, and a smirk crossed her face. She knew full well that he enjoyed it, and how good he was. Kira was teasing Yuri about Kamil complimenting her. The fact that he had come as a bit of a surprise to her, and obviously, it had to her best friend as well. As she was feeling sorry for herself, she realized something. Since when did she ever feel sorry about herself for anything? She was a big girl, strong, confident and always gave her opinion whether other like it or not. Why was she sitting her like some teenage drama queen?

Ren’ai decided to interject in both conversations, without being rude, of course. She opened up her mouth to respond to Liu’s comments about dueling, speaking to Tadashi, but Sora spoke up, kind of making the Firebender jump a bit. After she excused herself, her Air Acolyte friend went back to talking, and the conversation was back to Tadashi’s way of life. The dark-haired young woman decided not to say anything, because it was back to a topic she didn’t want to talk about. Well, that wasn’t entirely true. It wasn’t that she was adverse to talking about the Air Acolyte way of life that her friend was so fond of, it was just that her opinion didn’t fit in. Her boyfriend was fascinated, while she had at first been interested in hearing it about, she had already. Besides, Tadashi knew that she didn’t necessarily agree with everything in their peaceful way of life, though they didn’t mean that she hated it or anything.

Ren’ai reminded herself that she needed to not be such a senseless silly little girl about all this. So what if everyone else was talking? This was good! Tadashi was getting along all right with Liu, and Yuri… was being Yuri. Her best friend would come around in time, but she didn’t expect that to happen overnight. Eventually, she would get used to her new boyfriend, especially when he wasn’t so new anymore. The Firebender did not, however, want to interject in Liu and Tadashi’s conversation. However, she was noticing that her boyfriend hadn’t touched the food that had been set in front of him. Laying her head on his shoulder, she said, “I’m sorry for interrupting, but babe, there’s food in front of you. You don’t want it to get cold do you?” She smiled at him, before turning back to her own food and talking a bite.

After finishing her bite, Ren’ai turned to her best friend Yuri. She had meant what she thought earlier – she was going to talk to someone whether they wanted her to or not. She was sure no one was intentionally leaving her out, and she was trying to be as unemotional about this as possible. The dark-haired young woman was a naturally emotional person, something that had caused her many problems in the past. She simply told herself to stay calm, and there was no reason to be upset about anything because no one was doing anything wrong. After Kira slapped Yuri on the back for inhaling her water, the Firebender smiled at her Earthbender best friend. “Drink water, don’t inhale it.” She then leaned in close to her, whispering in her ear so only she could hear – and possible Liu and Kira, but no one else. “And compliments are meant to be accepted. Even if you don’t agree, smile and say thank you.”

Kamil wasn’t wrong when he said Yuri was pretty. Most of the time, her best friend chose not to be feminine like she was tonight, but Ren’ai thought she looked nice tonight, albeit a bit uncomfortable. Wearing a dress all the time wasn’t the only thing one had to do to be more feminine. Yuri had a bit of an androgynous look to her, so when she wasn’t dressed like a girl, people mistook her for a guy. She had told her best friend before that she needed to be more feminine if she wanted to look less like a guy. That didn’t mean wear dresses and skirts all the time, but there was such a thing as tops that were more feminine that others. Oh, yeah, and then, of course, there was makeup. If she wore that more often, people would know that she was a girl. Nevertheless, after she finished whispering to Yuri, she sat back down, a smile on her face, and took another bite of food.

Kamil definitely had not anticipated Yuri choking on her water shortly after he had given her a compliment. Had he said something wrong? He wasn't lying. He hesitated a bit on what to do, but Kira seemed to have a handle on things. It sounded slightly loud, but it seemed to do the trick nonetheless and he was just happy the girl was breathing air again and not water. Kira's words caused him to blink, though.

"If there's anything wrong with my head, your sister is not at fault. Saya would have beaten her to it. And honestly, during practice my looks are seriously the least of my worries. I was serious about my comment." He couldn't help but get the feeling that Kira maybe wasn't all that fond of him complimenting his sister. Maybe he shouldn't have done it the way he did, but he wasn't taking his words back. He did mean what he said.

His attention then went from Kira to Yuri who told him to just ignore her brother. She'd been about to say something Kamil had the feeling was a her not agreeing with his words, but before she could finish her sentence her brother stuffed food in her mouth. Kamil put his head in his hand and glanced between both siblings, eyes ultimately resting on the brother. "I get the feeling you're not particularly fond of me right now." He said bluntly. If so, it wasn't anything he was unfamiliar with. He had a tendency of rubbing people the wrong way. Unintentionally as well as intentionally.

When Ren'ai said something to Yuri the Waterbender tilted his head to the side and glanced around the table. Her boyfriend and Tadashi were talking to each other and Saya was listening in rapt attention. Yuri, Kira and him had been talking to each other... Was anyone else talking to her? He hadn't really been paying attention. Then again it would have been rude of him to look around while in conversation with someone, but he didn't think he had heard her voice that much.

"So Cap," he started, keeping his nickname for her even now, "How have you been up until now? I must say this is a pretty nice party here. It's interesting seeing you guys outside of practice." He wasn't an amazing conversationalist and that had honestly just been what was on the top of his head. But if no one was including Ren'ai in their conversations then he thought he'd at least try to. "I remember you mentioning Yuri and you being best friends," Or at least he thought he remembered that, "How long do you guys know each other, and how'd this friendship come to fruition? If you don't mind my asking."

No longer interested in whatever it was Kamil was up to, Saya was instead paying most of her attention on the conversation between the bald guy and that Firebender guy. The latter having gotten her attention with his mention of being a duelist. Now she was a bit more curious about him and how he dueled. She idly wondered if she asked if he'd duel her.

When it was the bald guy's turn to talk she turned her attention to him, only to have the old lady next to him start talking instead. She didn't quite follow what it was that she had said until the bald guy clarified. So he had a brother? Everyone just seemed to have siblings these days! Though she figured it really wasn't anything out of the ordinary. She wasn't any less interested about what he had to say, though. She had only spent a short amount of time at the Air Temple, and her memory of her time there was vague at best, but just thinking about he was talking about made her smile a bit. It was also interesting to hear a bit about Republic City itself. She honestly didn't know much about the place she now lived in; then again she had spent a great deal of her life just traveling with her parents. Occasionally the Earthbender remembered to take a bite of her food, but she really did want to hear what the other had to say about mostly the Air Temple and the acolyte way.
