Takeno was training near a volcano in the Fire Nation. The soldier was used to the heat. He had grown up in this country his entire life. The area was desolate, though, simply rocks and the large volcano behind him. It was going off, and most didn’t expect it to. He was not wearing his uniform, instead simply a pair of loose pants a shirt that tied around his waist. His black hair was not in its usual topknot, instead it was in a ponytail. His skin was the normal pale color of his people, and his eyes were the normal amber color. The man had accepted the opportunity to do battle with someone. He wasn’t sure who it was, but the person should be along soon enough. Part of him wondered why he was doing this. After all, was there any need?
Takeno was an Advanced Firebender, and as such, had many years of training in fighting opponents. Something had told him to accept this blind challenge. The soldier did not even know the person he was going to be paired. They were just randomly paired up, supposedly. I shouldn’t be here, the young man thought to himself. I should be doing my “duty” for the Fire Nation, or doing something for the Resistance. He was an important person in the scheme things, though of course not the Fire Lord. To him, he was just a soldier who got a lucky promotion during a battle because his superiors had been killed. He’d been alive, so they’d promoted him to Lieutenant quicker than he would have normally been allowed. War did that.
I should leave, Takeno thought to himself. Something was telling him to stay, that this would be a valuable learning experience. Yeah, sure, it would. Who could he possibly be paired up that would give him that kind of knowledge? It wasn’t that other people were talented and skill themselves, but the soldier had been trained since he was little in things most people learned the hard way. His father had taught him and his two siblings how to deal with pain and how to examine a situation, deciding whether not to go for the kill moves or show mercy. Kill moves were easier to do, as you did not have to be careful about where you made certain shots, especially if the other person was fighting to kill. Well, Fire made that decision easy, didn’t it? Fire was meant to kill, no more, no less.
Closing his eyes, Takeno sensed the heat around him. That’s where they got their power from, not just fire, but heat, as well. It didn’t matter whether or not he regretted making this decision now. He was here, going to train with someone, whether he liked it or not. Who knows, maybe he – or she – would put up a few good fights. Maybe then, it wouldn’t be boring or easy. A sigh escaped the soldier’s lips, as he paid attention to the area around him. The sun was high in the sky, and he thought he heard someone coming, but he couldn’t be sure. The volcano next to him muffled sounds from the other side. He hoped someone didn’t try to sneak up on him. Then again, the dark-haired man had always had good reflexes, thanks to his father.
