A year has passed since Fire Lord Zuko ascended the throne, and it seems like trouble is brewing between the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom once more. The Fire Lord and the Avatar began the Harmony Restoration Movement to restore the Fire Nation Colonies to their pre-war state by bringing any Fire Nation nationals back home, but for many of the citizens — of mixed Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom … Read more ›

Name: Lee Kaneda

Age: 22

Appearance:

Lee Kaneda is of an average height for a Fire Nation man, well-built by practice and maintenance, and obviously a soldier. Everything about him is kept in place as it should be — from the topknot of his hair to the boots of his Fire Nation army uniform. He is stationed with the domestic forces in what is now New Ozai, and as such he wears always the light armour and black clothing of the branch. Lee is almost always smiling and has, even at his young age, developing smile-lines around his eyes. His smile is bright and dimpled.

He has thick hair so black it looks blue in some lights, and light amber eyes. He is pale of complexion like many Fire Nation nationals. Lee keeps his face clean-shaven and wears no adornment other than his uniform, save a necklace made of bone that was a gift. In many ways he is just another soldier, with an entirely forgettable appearance. His most handsome feature is his eyes, which are warm and show emotion easily.

History:
From a small town in the Fire Nation — a hamlet of 800 or less, in fact, rendering it 'village' status — Kaneda retains some of that small-town feel to his people skills. Lee was very good in school, always an obedient boy and never one to push outside of the boundaries of the rules set in front of him. Like almost all children in the Fire Nation, he was taught at an early age to love and respect and fight for his Nation. From a young age he was taught also the value of honour and, like his father before him, he joined the Fire Nation military as soon as he was able. He was assigned to the domestic task forces charged with keeping peace in the colonies after showing no interest in learning to sail. As for bending — Lee is a Firebender, though he is neither exceptional or poor. He is simply average, an average Bender in an average occupation. It works out well for him, as he does not feel the need to excel; he feels the need only to give his best.

Lee was sent to New Ozai after its capture. It was his first assignment in the colonies. In New Ozai, he met Shtiya, a Waterbender from the North Pole. Twenty to Shtiya's seventeen, Lee was the pursuer in their relationship, finding the other boy fascinating and beautiful. Their relationship developed slowly but they were together for one year, while Shtiya learned healing from an Earth kingdom national in New Ozai. Talking to Shtiya at length was the first example of prolonged and intimate contact with anyone who was not Fire Nation (and, indeed, Lee's most intimate relationship with another human being), and it had a profound effect on Lee. It was kept from Lee that the other boy was a Waterbender, and when Lee found out, instead of capturing the boy, he told Shtiya to leave New Ozai by the next morning — it was the first time he had ever disobeyed orders. A quiet sense of unhappiness has been instilled in him since that time. The bone necklace he wears under his uniform was a gift from the Waterbender during their relationship. It is carved with the koi fish from the Northern Water Tribe, though it is uncertain as to why Shtiya gave it to him, as Lee does not discuss the necklace with anyone.

Personality:
Lee has a bright personality, as warm as the fire he has the gift to bend. He loves passionately, does his best at everything he tries, and cares deeply for order. He is quick to smile or be encouraging, and not given to berating others. This makes him successful as a soldier, because camaraderie is easy when he is around. Lee has a quick temper, however it tends to flare suddenly and dissipate just as easily. He does not hold a grudge and is happy to forgive and forget.

Lee is a very upstanding person, with a strong belief in what is right and what is wrong. He was raised to follow orders, uphold social structure, and live with honour. His commitment to the Fire Nation is one of his biggest flaws — the sense of loyalty instilled in him to the Nation is quite strong, such that he is often willing to overlook wrongdoing by his country in favour of the stance that they must be right. Lee will support things that are not necessarily fair to him, as well; if he were asked to marry a woman or felt that his family expected him to, that is what he would do, despite his sexual orientation. He is aware of how lucky he is that, for the moment, his parents accept his tendencies. The family's honour, the Nation's honour, and the ways things are Supposed To Be come first for him.

However, since his relationship with a male Waterbender, Lee has come to realize that perhaps not everything he had always thought was necessarily right or true. While he does not question orders and will always do his dead-level best to follow him, he may be easy to manipulate — particularly for those who were aware of his relationship and can find ways to use it to their advantage. One need only present a situation with the proper framing for Lee to acquiesce.

(ooc note: while Lee & Shtiya have backstory written together, they are not meant to be played together in practice, which is to say, I do not plan to RP with myself.)
