Name: Kugi Tang
Age: 32
Appearance: Instead of the typical top-knot Kugi prefers a buzz cut due to his hair once catching fire in a bending accident. As much as he despises standing out he sees his hair more as a candle wick. Something better kept short.
He keeps a short, trimmed black beard which is starting to lighten with age. In the same accident that resulted in his short hair preference Kugi lost his left eyebrow permanently. To keep things symmetrical he shaves his remaining eyebrow, giving him a slightly odd look. A small burn mark is scorched in a stripe along where his left eyebrow used to reside.

He has a habit of squinting his yellow eyes from slight astigmatism. He keeps a pair of eyeglasses with him, but rarely wears them in public.

His build is more flabby than he would like, but isn't a big enough issue for the normally lazy man to commit to daily excercise. While standing up he usually ends up about a inch taller than most, but this is mitigated by his almost constant slouching.

Kugi's arms and back are scarred from flogging while temporarily captured by the Earth Kingdom. For this reason he prefers to either keep prisoners locked up or execute rather than torture.

History: Kugi was born to two Fire Nation soldiers who led two vastly different lives. His father chased rank and rose to the rank of Colonel while his mother worked doing menial chores like guard duty or cleaning. When his father comitted suicide after a military blunder his mother drove into her son her philosophy of remaining unnoticed.
At the age of 12 his mother was executed in order to save the reputation of the officer above her after a prisoner escape.
Then he saw the downside of being too low in the Fire Nation's hierarchy. Somewhere between his mother's obscurity and his father's infamy lied Kugi's path in life. The middle path. He worked hard in the academy to be recognized but not so much to gain any sort of envy or preference. He passed his classes, but never stood out. He took pride in the fact that his instructors could never remember his name. It was the good students who were held to the high, crushing standards and it was the bad ones who were punished.
Kugi made mediocrity into an art form.

After the academy Kugi's plan had shifted into his father's direction. He chased rank and licked boots. He volunteered for missions no one would take to stand out in hopes of securing a promotion. As he rose in rank, his work purposely declined. Once he reached Lieutenant, what he considered the perfectly balanced rank, he did his best to keep his work at that level and never above or below in order to avoid promotion or demotion.

Passing on his genes was important to him and Kugi decided to arrange for a marriage. Any woman would do. He found his "ideal" woman in the eldest daughter of a family with fading status. Two daughters were born over the years which Kugi found himself cherishing. Before, parenthood was just his duty now he felt he had a motivation to stay alive more than mere survival.

Personality: Kugi lives his life by the motto: The nail that sticks up gets hammered down. He doesn't like trouble and never seeks glory in his work. He sees himself as one of many anonymous drones working for the Fire Lord and would rather keep it that way. Typically, he is easygoing to a surprising degree unless there is something that threatens to disturb his peace. He is known to be lax in discipline as he doesn't mind his soldiers breaking the dress code and allowing jewelry like bracelets and earrings unless a superior is visiting. Things that directly inconvenience him by making his job more difficult are met with more draconian measures like exile or death.
People attempting to go over Kugi's head to his superiors tend to not be found again. He prefers peace, and ruthlessly protects it.

Kugi purposely keeps his family in Shu Jing while he is serving in the Earth Kingdom to keep them from harm. He has two small daughters who he sometimes sends gifts like dolls and bracelets from Omashu. Part of the reason he prefers to keep his head down and remain unnoticed is for their sake. He knows he can't be a father if he is dead or shamed into exile. Although a proud father, Kugi is aware of how others might exploit the love of his family as a weakness of him, therefore he rarely mentions them.

His relationship with his daughters is good, but the same cannot be said about his wife whom he callously cheats on and even encourages her to do the same. Outside of siring and raising children Kugi has no interest in marriage or his wife in general. To him marriage and romance are mutually exclusive things.

While he normally avoids combat, especially direct combat, Kugi has experience with many weapons and a near mastery of the broad sword. For a mid-level ranked man, when the mood strikes him he does more actual fighting than is deemed necessary to some.
Despite his age and training his firebending appears to be only at a high intermediate level as master level firebending tended to make one more noticed. His martial interest lies more in weapons than bending.

Strategically, he prefers the path of least resistance. If it's faster to cut down a group of people than to move them he will choose to cut them down. He sees such ruthlessness as the price of his mostly easy-going nature.
