Plot Update 10 March 2021

A year has passed since Fire Lord Zuko ascended the throne, and it seems like trouble is brewing between the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom once more. The Fire Lord and the Avatar began the Harmony Restoration Movement to restore the Fire Nation Colonies to their pre-war state by bringing any Fire Nation nationals back home, but for many of the citizens — of mixed Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom … Read more ›

As things draw closer to a final conflict with the firenation, it seems to me that Sokka would prove more of a liability than an asset if he doesn't learn the ways of the warrior and soon. Besides it's getting a little old seeing him get his butt kicked in fights all the time. Aang and Katara have become much stronger benders, shouldn't Sokka start dedicating himself to becoming a true warrior for the upcoming battle?

What do you think???

I think he is strong. Maybe not as strong as a dender like Katara, Aang, Zuko or Toph but strong still. He hasn't got hiss butt kicked in all the episodes, take the episode Jet for instance he saved a whole village. Sokka is a warrior, there isn't really a code to follow. He protects the ones he loves, and others he doesn't know. And the final conflict? That is way, way, way off. He still has to go through earthbending, master that, master whats left of water, and firebending without a leaf. Sokka is a warrior pretty much.

I think the biggest problem is we only see snippits of Sokka's fighting skills. In "Return to Omashu" he showed very good aim to strike the blade out of Mai's hand with his boomerang. In "The Chase", however, he was easily beaten by Ty Lee. Then in "The Drill" he pretty much did nothing though once he thought of how to stop the drill, there really wasn't much for him to do. So I don't think it is just an issue of when he will grow, but also once he improves, when will we get to see it...

Copper for your thoughts. :)

The writer's have changed Sokka's role a great deal. He now is the idea guy (and Katara and Aang are the cut-stuff-up-with-waterbendering guys, together they're team avatar :)). Before he had seemed like the dead weight. But in my opinion, he won't fight as much, but instead he'll just be there for comical support (because everyone loves Sokka!)

LOL I love that quote from "The Drill" LOL

I think that is what spurred this topic, though. Sokka is a great character and I for one do not care to see him reduced to the dancing monkey that everyone laughs at. And if he becomes the "sure he's dead weight, but boy he's funny " character, that is precisely what will have happened...

I think you guys have the image that Sokka isn't as good because he is a non bender. You see Katara, Aang, Toph, and Zuko fight with bending all the time because it is the CENTER of the whole series. If Sokka had a chance to kill everybody and everything, I bet he will and it'd change. Just wait, watch Lake Laogai and all these other episodes and just wait.

Cheese for your thoughts. :o

I dont think Sokka is a bad person, and far from a burden. He is useful as a comedy relief which sets this show from anime a lot. (i didnt watch a lot of anime that had humor this good)

Also think of bending like today. It's so easy to defeat a person with bending, but using hand to hand combat is much harder requiring a sense of honor

Don't get me wrong. I think Sokka's a great character and the importance of comic relief cannot be overestimated, and yes he has had his moments when he's fought, but I just think its kinda unfair that everyone else is either a bending master or approaching mastery and Sokka is still just flinging his boomarang.

I have an unusual vision of Iroh becoming Aang's fire master while Zuko teaching Sakko how to fight with swords. I know it probably won't happen but it sure would be cool if it did. ;D

Sokka's skills as a warrior have been shown to us only through combat with highly trained warriors and benders, never a normal soldier or anyone along those lines. What sort of training has he got? His father left his tribe with all the other warriors way before he could get trained, and then he had a few bits of training, such as on Kyoshi island. I think, though, that he is a good warrior. He has a great aim with his boomerang and obviously has some good skills (see episode "Jet"). His character has perhaps gone through the most changes, as he was oroiginally going to be a bigger combat character, but once it was discovered that the audience preferred to watch benders fight (I have NO idea why...) They had to give him a more defined character. It is a big challenge to create a non-bender that can compete against a bender. The bender has to be strong, due to their intensive training requirements, and also has the whole bending thing on their side. So the only way to compete with benders is to give the non-benders some other advantage. Some have numbers, some have special weapons (Mai) some specialize in benders (Ty lee) and some, like our friend Sokka, has to use his mind. Frankly, he's a thinker. A strategist more than a soldier. He has to be more than a normal solider to distinguish him anyways.

But as for the subject of his actual combat skills, I think that he will probably make some sort of breakthrough in his training, learn a new skill, something along those lines. Maybe he'l get a new weapon. (Was I the only one hwo noticed that Sokka lost his club?).

I.O.U. for your thoughts.

ya, maybe he'll learn to swordfight. swords rule! and maybe zuko will be the one to teach him. he is an amazing swordsman. anyone else think that? plus, zuko kicked sokka's but without hardly any bending in the first episode showing that not only is zuko stronger overall, but he can defeat sokka in hand to hand combat. and yes sokka has progressed, but zuko has as well.

I don't think Sokka will ever become a warrior. He always gets himself into some embarrasing situation and Aang or Katara always save him. Even if he wanted to train himself something would always happen to prevent him from doing so.(Like an earthquake) *laugh*
