Plot Update 10 March 2021

A year has passed since Fire Lord Zuko ascended the throne, and it seems like trouble is brewing between the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom once more. The Fire Lord and the Avatar began the Harmony Restoration Movement to restore the Fire Nation Colonies to their pre-war state by bringing any Fire Nation nationals back home, but for many of the citizens — of mixed Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom … Read more ›

Waterbending could be the deadliest bending of all

While reading the comments in the Katara vs Tai Lee thread I got to thinking of the real potential of waterbending. Now, while I don't believe the creators of Avatar will ever take the show down this path, it is kinda scary to imagine the true potential of waterbending. The human body is made up of approximately 80% water. It was mentioned in the other thread that a waterbender could just freeze that water and kill a person, but there are even more insidious ways a waterbender could use a persons own water against them.

- By simply redirecting the water in a person's body a waterbender could down a person by filling their lungs with water.
- By moving water to a person's brain, a waterbender could render a person unconscious or kill them outright.
- By extracting even a small percentage of a person's water a waterbender could render their opponent seriously dehydrated and unable to fight.
- If the waterbender had a serious sense of humor (intentional oxymoron) they could fill their enemies bladder to the bursting point.
- By moving water to their enemies joints, a waterbender to seriously slow down their opponent and just toy with them if they were so inclined.
- Or by simply taking control of the water in a person, a waterbender should be able to move and manipulate that person any way they want to: smash them into a wall, send them flying into the air and back down hard onto the ground, etc.)

Again, I don't think we'll ever see Katara or any other waterbender demonstrate this level of waterbending ability but it's kinda scary to imagine.

Can anyone else think of possible ways a waterbender could manipulate a person's own water?

freeze it. I mentioned this once or twice around here that since the water is primary in the body any water bender could freeze the water within our cells causing a small expansion of the cells and also reduce the source of actual usable water.

The cells could explode from the expansion, or they would dehydrate from the lack of usable water. It's like swallowing ice. We can't use it because it's hard so our body heat naturally melts the water into a liquid for our cells to breakdown for energy

I've thought about this before manipulating the elements in one's body. That'd pretty much be the most ensured way of killing someone. But I can't help to be skeptical that there's a catch.
I just figure that people can't bend elements inside some's....Chi system (if you will); if the elements are naturally in place of your organ systems, it's interconnected with your chi. And the Chi serves as a type of bending barrier. The key words are 'naturally in place' for instance excess water is unnatural in one's lungs which is why it's possible to bend water out of one's lung, as Katara performed once.

But then that would mean that plants 'don't' have Chi since it's possible to bend water in plants. And I could be absolutely wrong. If there's some kind of Chi-ology out there, I know nothing of it, so I'm just making a big guess and am most likely wrong about most of it, haha.

It is kind of scary to think what a waterbender could do to you. If you think of it a waterbender could use you as a puppet to do his or her bidding. He or she could control you, i be so scared. But you would probably have to be a powerful bender to do that. People have body fat in them too. And fats are oils. And water and oils aren't the same thing.

Yeah. In my RPG training, the guy tried to control my body, and use me as a puppet, but I was all NO!!!! That is NOT cool. But, water benders could freeze the spittle in your mouth, rendering you breathless and dead. That would kind of suck. Since your body is largely made up of water....... Whoops! A water bender just killed you! O.O

Yeah that is kind of harsh, but a waterbender could do it. The creators have probably thought about this alot. It would be really cool if they had Katara do this at the end of the series. Waterbending people(?), people bendeing(?), bodybenders(?) *rubs head while clueless on what to call it *

Yeah. Like, she's facing off with someone, and she closes her fist, and all the water in their body freezes, and they die! But, that wouldn't exactly be Y7...... So, sadly, I don't think that they will have that. Oh well, maybe there will be some hot Zutara action instead. I'll settle for that....... ;D

^^omg suyami stop!!! please you are scarring my mind with unwanted images.

Yes like suyami said it wouldn't be exactly fit for nickelodeon and think about the ratings they would get if their parents saw that. You rarely see any ACTUAL deaths most people are just tossed from very high places then some how they live and walk away painfully.

Do you mean the images of Zutara *waggles eyebrows suggestively* or morbid images? Yeah, they probably won't show any hot smexiness with Zuko and Katara deaths cause that would be innapropriate. Sorry, Takano, it just wrote itself!

it did NOT write itself *backs away from suyami very quietly and quickly in fear*

and it's the zutara part. I can deal with morbid deaths, but not that....its a cartoon for christ sakes!

Anyway. Yes to move back onto to topic. The fact that water benders COULD have that power leaves a lot proving the creators do not want to make a world with the ability to innovate what exactly their bending can do. It's like if zuko created blasts with lightning (not lightning the explosion he experienced) wouldn't that mean someone could control that energy and use that to blow up things?

Or since earth benders can twirl small pebbles in a circle can't they use earth bending like water bending?

A lot of ideas we can think of but the creators have to limit to ensure things are reasonable within the show

Yeah, I don't think the little kids would be ready for zutara........ What do you think, Takano? *grins evilly* *evil laugh* Anyhow, I guess water bending could be the deadliest of all. Can water benders bend other liquids, or is it just stuff that has water in it?

Just things with water. Perfume for example is probably a diluted concentration of a scented material. So then when you bend the water the perfume scent is pulled along with the water. Like when Katara bended the water to give to sokka toph and momo on the episode "the desert" it pulled the particles from the swamp when she used that water to attack the swamp guy

Well then, couldn't Katara have bended the water from deep down in the earth? I mean, there is water deep down beneath the sand. Okay, I'm going a bit off topic here, sorry guys. Anyhow, water probably is really deadly. You could just kill someone with a flick of your wrist. *ponders* YES!!! I JUST GOT PROMOTED!!! *wooo* 500 posts...

I have to say.... NO! Waterbenders cannot bend someone like a puppet or take their blood out or freeze them with a clench of their fist or all that morbid scary stuff. By the way Suyami, Good job! Your the14th person to cause me to lose my sanity. :)

People have a chi system, therefore they are protected from such attacks. You could try and freeze the mucus in your mouth but that would be hard.

Plants can be bended because they are not as complex as a human body. They don't ahve hearts, brains, or lungs.

Note! All I say is just my view and presumption. If it is wrong then Whoo Dee Do

I have thought of this before but shook it out of my head as I realized the potentials of the OTHER bendings too.

Air: You... could control the air in some person or inside something and make them burst
You can rob the air out of their lungs
((weird but)) you can deflate a person

Fire: Lol you lose

Earth: Rocks are made of minerals... I'm pretty sure that your body has lots of minerals in it... ((I can't think of any good ones))

I've been a waterbender because I was a fan of freezing and making huge waves... I also think that you could bend the moisture and water vapor in the air. I don't know what else to say... BUT! I am relisting the whatever

Water: Control of the body and what not, water vapor

Air: Explosion of things

Fire: Combustion

Earth: Minerals in the body

That is a good point about the plants. However, even the plants have valves that help move water around their "body" for a lack of a better word. If they can do that then, it wouldn't be a far strech to control an animals movement. To manipulate the water in anyone's body would reasonable have to count on a few major factors. 1.) Skill of the bender, 2.) Distance from the target, 3.) What the target is, 4.) the amount of control the target can exert on them selves.
