I'd like to pose three thought probing questions
1. If Aang was killed in the fire nation raids 112 years ago wouldnt another avatar be born into the other nation so rending the fire lords plan to rid the world of the avatar a failure?
2. Where will the next avatar's learn air bending? as it is key for the avatar to master all four of the elements
3. What happens when in the future the cycle roles back aroudn and the avatar is to be born as an air bender again how when there are no known parents?
Any thoughts people I have no idea too be honest.

Well for number 3 if Aang and who ever he marries(probably Katara) have kids then I'm sure at least one of them would be an air bender (well hopefully), so one of their descendants would be the next air bending avatar or if none of thier descendants was an air bender the avatar would probably just skip the air benders and go on to the next bending type. At least that's my theory.
For number 2 I guess he/she would have to either teach themselves or if there are any air bending scrolls left use those or if Aang has airbending ids then thoos kids would learn from Aang and their kids would learn from them and so on.
For number 1 I think they were just trying to kill of the air benders.

1. Yeah that doesn't make much sense. Then again, the longer it takes for the avatar to mature, the easier it would be for him to conquer the world. By killing all the Airbenders, and attempting to kill the Avatar, his goal was probably to slow down the Avatar so that he wouldn't become powerful for a longer period of time, allowing the Fire Nation to gain power.
2. I would have to agree with Jiro. Either the next Avatar uses scrolls and/or some of Aang's kids may be able to air bend.
3. Again I would agree with Jiro. Aang's descendants may be Airbenders and one of them would have the Avatar as a child when the cycle came around. If that doesn't work then yeah, air would be skipped over. That would kinda suck xD

Hmm.. I spent a little time wondering about this too, actually. Here are some of my guesses.
1. My guess is that they wouldn't try to kill Aang. The next avatar in the cycle would be a water bender--and we've seen that the North water tribe can really hold its own against the Fire Nation. They would have probably tried to have captured him instead.
2. Not only could Aang's descendants become air benders, but also the next Avatar may learn his air bending through the Spirit realm.
3. I have to agree with the two above be that Air might be skipped over--or there is a chance that the Avatar will cease to exist entirely, causing the Avatar to slip into legend, etc, etc.

1. I think that they did mean to kill all of the airbenders, the Avatar including. Why? Because if the succeeded, then the Avatar born to the next nation in the cycle, The Water Tribes, would have been in a disadvantage and would not be able to learn airbending. From there, the Fire Lord most likely planned on doing to the Water Tribe Avatar, what Zhao said he would be doing to Aang in episode thirteen. From there they would have kept that plan up and they would continue to imprison and kill Avatars until it just ended.
2&3. Sometimes things happen in the world that just can't be undone. They are bad, and the fact that they have occurred just proves that we must be careful with what we do because the repercussions may be irreversible.

1. If Aang was killed in the fire nation raids 112 years ago wouldnt another avatar be born into the other nation so rending the fire lords plan to rid the world of the avatar a failure? He was attempting to rid the world of the next Avatar, sure; however, like Shio pointed out, had he succeeded, the next Avatar would be water and unable to fully complete the Avatar training.
2. Where will the next avatar's learn air bending? as it is key for the avatar to master all four of the elements. I think the cycle will be broken at that point; however, there could be a possibility that Aang might teach them via the Spirit World - though, if that were the case, I'm surprised that Roku didn't teach Aang firebending. So, that might not be entirely plausible.
3. What happens when in the future the cycle roles back aroudn and the avatar is to be born as an air bender again how when there are no known parents? The cycle is broken.

In the last episode, the Sozen's comet, it explained that they killed the air nomads first because they were looking for Aang. If i was the fire lord i would want to kill the avatar until he was born into the fire cycle because he would be easier to find, control, and possibly use.
And, if he kills him in the avatar state then the avatar is gone forever, so maybe he was planning on doing that when he found him. And i dont think the fire nation would fear the Northern Water Tribe, i mean the only reason they survived was because of the avatar, so i think that theory of capture because the water tribe can hold their own is flawed. In the hour show on that they fell pretty fast.

So lets say that the avatar lives for probably 150 years or more, because it was said they had extended life (ignoring the fact they can encase themselves accidentally in ice balls all live for a few hundred). So Aang has lets say five kids, three get airbending perhaps. Aang lives through about two generations, enough to see his grandchildren as around the age of 70. Then add 450 years for the next three avatars (assuming they all live long lives) thats probably six more generations. By then you could have populated the entire air nomads again.
Thats my theory =)
But theoretically i think Aang would have like 20 kids, he seems like that kind of person. =)
