Bear with me here a second as I lay out my points.
Bending, at least for the Waterbenders, seems to require an incarnate greater spirit or two in order to function, a sort of psychic channel to let the Bender's violate the laws of physics that otherwise dominate. Now assuming that this model holds true for the other three Disciplines, each spirit would need an immortal host form as an anchor.
Now, Momo, showed up from nowhere, completely alone in an otherwise lifeless temple complex. Individual animals don't last very long as a species, and judging by the short flashback and Momo's behavior, flying lemurs seem to be social animals. So if there was a colony of the cute little beasties who like people as much as they seem to... The Gaang should have atttracted a whole family of the things to them in a clump.
But they didn't. Just one of them who showed up when the Sacred Avatar chamber was opened, and led Aang to the evidense he needed to accept the destruction of the Air Nomads and start growing up pronto and get serious about this saving the world gig. Color me suspious, but that plus his occasional moments of tactical genious/violent distractionhood makes me think there may be more going on under that cute little skull then we think, at least in flashes.
So, if you're the Air/Sky/Wind/whatever spirit and you've just spent the last hundred years thinking all of your worshippers/disciples are dead when you suddenly find that one of them is not only alive but the Avatar in a time when your spirit senses are tingling like crazy... Wouldn't sticking to the kid like glue seem like a good idea to you? Make sure he's happy, safe, and learning while the half-nuts Lemury brain you've been running acts on auto pilot most of the time?
Thoughts on this fan crack idea?
