So i dont know if this question should go here or not, but this is a thread called avatar so it seems appropriate.

When Aang was walking to the Sealion turtle person in the last episode, i believe it said that before there was elemental bending it was bending the energy within yourself. So does that mean there was a point before the avatar existed? Because the avatar cant be the master of all four elements before there was elemental bending.

And if the above is true, where and how did the avatar come into being? Or any elemental bending at all. It seems to just put limits on things to me...

And did the sealion-turtle spirit bend when he touched Aang's forehead to give him the ability to take Ozai's firebending away? In which case it could be assumed that others could learn Spirit bending like what happened in the other elements... which just answered my second question. (They learned elemental bending from Dragons, Air Bicen, Those mole things, and watching the tides).

So just to sum up some discussion questions:

1. At one point was there only spirit bending (using own energy to bend) and no elemental bending.

2. (if above is true) Why convert to only elemental bending when spirit bending seems more powerful.

3. (Also if 1 is true) Where did the avatar come from if the elemental bending didnt arrive until later.

4. If early elemental benders learned bending from various sources, couldnt anyone theoretically learn bending where previously they were unable to?

5. What exactly does Spirit bending do..?

This is in the right place, Pago — it's about bending, after all.

Mind you, this is just my theory, but I believe that yes, we can assume that (1) there was spirit bending before elemental bending. However I think that (3) only the Avatar did spirit bending, and that (2) when the people of the four nations learned to bend the elements from the badgermoles (earth), dragons (fire), Moon spirit (water), and flying bisons (air), the Avatar also became a master of these elements, possibly by bending the spirit of early benders into him or herself. How the Avatar came to be born into a cycle of the element benders probably has to do with this spirit that they bent.

(4) In theory, yes, anyone can learn to bend. I'm in a story where my character Cale is helping Shio's character Vora go to find the firebending spirits, because by the laws of nature she is SUPPOSED to be able to firebend, but she was born without the gift.

(5) This one... I don't really know. We know it has something to do with bending because Aang used spirit bending to take away Ozai's firebending abilities. But, as the creators of the show have said, elemental bending is more related to the spirit than to blood, so I guess that makes sense. I wonder also (based on my theory two paragraphs up) if the properties of a spirit can be bent from one person into another.

And that's my take on it. Anyone else?
