Plot Update 10 March 2021

A year has passed since Fire Lord Zuko ascended the throne, and it seems like trouble is brewing between the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom once more. The Fire Lord and the Avatar began the Harmony Restoration Movement to restore the Fire Nation Colonies to their pre-war state by bringing any Fire Nation nationals back home, but for many of the citizens — of mixed Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom … Read more ›

Okay, now I KNOW everyone here was shocked when Toph blew open that hole in the cage, and everyone thought at that moment Toph was the coolest character, if only for that moment. However...

I've noticed that the Gaang have yet to actually recognize that she can bend freaking metal. Like, they know it, but they don't think it's anything special or unique... like it's just regular Earthbending to them. For instance, when she was on the boat and she goes "THEY KNOW!" * boosh * and bends the bridge to the water, they didn't show ANY recognition she could do it. And when she broke them out of prison, she bended the bars and they simply ran off.

I don't think the Gaang realizes her abilities. >P

You know what? You have a point. I never realized it until I read your post, but you would think that the GAang would have showed more shock at the fact that she can freaking bend metal. I mean, I understand that after she explained it and they got used to it, then it would be normal, but before that, like when they first saw it, then they should have been shocked. Like, "OMG, Toph can bend metal!" I mean... no one bends metal! She's the first person they have ever heard of - as far as we know - that has ever suceeded in bending metal, and probably the only one, because she's unique - a very powerful, blind Earthbender, powerful because she's blind, most likely, but that's a different discussion for another day. Anyway, good point!

Lol.

I don't think it means much from the noob, but I bet they've seen Toph Metal Bend for quite a while, in that we missed they're first actual first look on her abilities. Then again, Aang acted as though he didn't care, to be frank. It looks like they had forgotten how powerful Toph is, or we have not seen the best of Toph. I mean, I am not that smart, nor have I watched both books one and two. But, I just think it's a good idea for me to actually voice my opinion.

Well, if you also think about the being on the ship, they had been on it for at least a few weeks, which could have been plenty of time for Toph to tell them and as well as let the excitement wear off. That's what I saw from it. -Nod.-

True Kazu, but Jin isn't talking about just book 3. I mean Jin has a really good point if you think about it. When she did break them out of jail by bending the metal, I'm sure everyone would have expected Sokka to at least say something a long the lines that expressed him in shock, but it never really happened. And Aang should have been shown in surprise too in The awakening, since that was actually the first time he really saw Toph metal bend ( the bridge). :( Poor Toph. Over looked even before her own gang.

Perhaps Mike and Brian were too busy with other things that they just simply forgot? It's sort of like that one scene in The Awakening when Aang goes to burn his demolished staff in the lava rock. Aang's bare footed, he obviously can't bend fire, and he's walking on the same surface that burnt his staff to ashes. Just another little mistake probably. :P

Hate to burst the proverbial bubble, but the only time Toph's metalbending as far as I can tell was seen by the 'Gaang' was after Aang was hit by Azula's lightning.

Basicly put, Everyones had time too see her Metalbend while Aang was on the long KO, Aang himself is 'The' Avatar, and probably had yet to notice just how spectacular her metalbending is compared to his own Aangst about everyone thinking he's dead and being forced to hide like a criminal.

And as for Aang and firebending, he can firebend, he's a natural talant who has ages of past lives, and he did Firebend when the Deserter taught him, but he swore not to do it again, an oath he knew he would have to break when he opened his Chakras.

In martial arts and obviously bending there is a thing called Muscle Memory, its a memory of the body based off of practice and what a person is. Aang being the Avatar has generations of Passive 'Bending' Memories all locked away deep inside of him, defending him, so for all he knew there was nothing unusual, but infact he was probably Firebending without even knowing it to defend his feet.

That or he has leather on his feet almost as thick as Toph.

Heres what Annoy's me, the Theme.
"... and all though his Airbending skills are great, he has alot to learn before he's ready to save anyone." Is it me or did that expire durring the season 1 final?

And as for Toph's metalbending, it obviously looks alot harder for her to do then normal earthbending, she actualy isn't 'Metal'bending, but more 'Micro-Earth'bending, taking the small irrimovable particles of earth left in the metal and using them to shread and bend the metal. I suspect that in theory if someone where to make a 'pure' metal that has no earth content in it, it would be impossible for her to bend, but looking at the Fire Nation 'the best metalworkers of the nations' it looks like there metal making process' use a ton of coal and ash and thus a ton of earth is always trace in it, and metal can't be totaly purified with even a massive blasting furnice. I for one think of all current metals, Tin Foil and Titanium would have the most resistance to toph, but they still have minor inperfections (not sure about Titanium). So that being said, I would say that while she is called a metalbender she actualy is just a really razorhead accute earthbender. The reason I think Metalbending was not discovered before is the Wait and Listen approch was only used by vary few earth benders, and only one of them was the vary personification of that, most earthbending is an imposition of the benders will into the rock and thus for most earthbenders are self dimuning in there teachings because they mistake having will over the earth, as a loud brutal smash routine and rarely delve into the quiet side of medetation and study like the Airbenders did with air and the waterbenders did with water.

All the best bending in Avatar is focused, calm, controled bending. Aang's Avatar state is the emence control of many past lives, Toph's metalbending is the product of study, delegence and quiet focus, and Azula's Lightningbending is Firebending done under calm and cool conditioning and diligent focus. Azula may be crazy, but she is a dedecated and resolute bender who understands the importance of study and a level head.

I think the reason the Gaang didn't really express much about Toph's metal bending is simple. She would have told everyone on the boat because they would want to know how she escaped the bounty hunters. As for Aang, when he first saw it, he was so furious I doubt he was thinking straight enough to really appreciate it. Then after that time passes between The Awakening and The Headband where Aang could have gotten more used to Toph's metal bending.

Hahahaha, I thought the SAME THING! I was like, 'she can bend freaking metal? Wait till the crew finds out that she's a metal bender!!" *crew doesn't notice, just goes with it* "Well that was a buzz kill"

Yeah, I don't know why they weren't more freaked out. I mean, we saw her do it the first time and we were all excited, but then they never had her 'reveal' it to the Gaang (i love that word!). It really bothered me. I wish they would be more realistic with some of the relationships. If I found out I could metal bend or *cough* do what Katara can now do *cough* I would want to talk about it.

I never got to see those episodes, which today I'm going to try really hard not to miss the show. But, I think that's interesting. Yes, the minerals in the metal give her the ability to bend it. No one would have thought it was possible, yet a waterbender who never met an airbender in her life, which means she couldn't have met an earthbender, and an airbender who didn't know anything about any other element completely disregard it.

So, it almost sounds insensitive or something. But, I think it's cool she can do that.

The creators of this show... Are just brilliant. Lol.

The thing I really noticed about Toph's metal bending is that it's never really a constant. It seems like it's easier or harder for her depending on what the plot requires. I don't know. It seemed like it was just a subtle emergancy power when she broke through the gate of the Fire Lord's bunker, but when she dropped the ship bridge it seemed she had as full control over the metal as she does earth. But it actually seems like Toph gets overlooked in general, not just for her bending talents. For a lot of episodes it almost seems like she sits back in the shadows until someone says 'Toph, bend that will yah?' At least that's what it seemed like for Season 3. (Not counting the Runaway of course)
