Plot Update 10 March 2021

A year has passed since Fire Lord Zuko ascended the throne, and it seems like trouble is brewing between the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom once more. The Fire Lord and the Avatar began the Harmony Restoration Movement to restore the Fire Nation Colonies to their pre-war state by bringing any Fire Nation nationals back home, but for many of the citizens — of mixed Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom … Read more ›

I have a few questions to pose about Elemental Bending...
You may treat this like a questionnaire.

1.) When people Earthbend, they take the rock out of the earth right? Wouldn't that leave great caverns inside the middle of the earth? Think of it like this. You have a 10x10 square of straws standing upright. You pull one of the straws upwards, chop it off and chuck it at something (the act of Earthbending). There would be a part of Earth missing from the middle of the earth. Either that or it's magically generated, like how firebenders do it.

2.)

If Waterbenders can bloodbend, why can't Earthbenders mineral bend things, like say... bones. Toph can bend the iron minerals and other things inside metal, shouldn't they be able to Bonebend to have a little bit of the same effect?

3.) In the episode The Seige Of The North, Yue makes a remark that their ancestors learned bending from how the moon pushed and pulled the tides. That MAY be just a tribal legend, but it also appears later. How some Earthbenders learned how to bend from Badger Moles. Is it possible to acquire bending not being born one? It seems some have...

4.) In the episode The Seige Of The North, Yue makes a remark that their ancestors learned bending from how the moon pushed and pulled the tides. Then waterbending would be a little bit, gravity bending, no?

Some of them may sound stupid, but enjoy thinking :)

Well, here's my take on these topics.

1. I think those caverns already exist in the earth. So when earthbenders stomp their foot to make a chunk of rock fly into the air, they're putting pressure into the earth which in turn pushes back up--the benders just control where and how large that portion is. Or when they cause the earth to slide and move, its just pushing on the other earth around it, taking advantages of spaces underground and compacting the miniscule compartments already there. Anyways, something so deeply scientific not only takes away from the 'legendary' feel of bending, but would be very hard to portray in a cartoon intended for older children that are still children nonetheless (although it has obviously appealed to much older ages ^^)

2. I think this is mentioned in several other bending threads, if you like reading through them. But it's been mentioned that Toph can only metal bend because she's an amazing master and does stuff that no one else can do to begin with. Kind of the same with Katara, and bloodbending is also limited only during the full moon. And as for like, bonebending, I guess it depends on your definition of 'earth.' Which minerals, how much of them, etc. Otherwise, minerals in the body are so trace...I personally find it unlikely.

3. Yes! I think so. Definately possible. Thing is, that was back at the beginning of the world when bending first came into existance. It's more of an origin myth. Unfortunately, you don't see it happening anymore. Spirit intervention has dramatically decreased...though I personally had hopes of air bending returning through such a process...

4. I don't have any idea about this. I wouldn't think so, though. Gravity is so much more, and what would gravity bending even look like? How could you do that? *ponders*...

Anyways, just my take of things. Feel free to contradict

I have a solution to the first question...

Sure, earthbending may leave small crevaces in the ground, but I imagine most of them are so miniscule it doesn't affect anything. Besides, if the world of Avatar is anything like the structure of our own Earth, there would be no problems. By putting pressure into the earth and pushing it up, it most likely pulls it from the bottom of the plate. Soon after, the magma would fill the small holes left in the plate, and would return the structure to normal.

Or at least, that's how I see it.
