((I realize that this could probably fit in the 'character' board, but because this post concerns the voice actors of Iroh, I figured it could go here too))
As everyone probably knows, Mako, the amazing (late) voice actor of Iroh, passed away. It's really a shame, because he brought a real charm to the character and the show.
Well I don't know how many people know this...maybe it's old news, but in the funny short 'school time shipping,' the new actor for Iroh, Greg Baldwin, was listed in the credits. So this is his first debut as Iroh.
Personally - maybe I'm just oblivious - I didn't even notice that it was a different voice. Has anyone else watched it? If so, then hopefully you'll agree that this guy is good. I'm so glad they picked somebody capable of at least part of the charm that Mako achieved.
Anybody else have any thoughts on this?
(BTW: If you haven't seen 'school time shipping' then I advise you to look it up on youtube. It's adorable)

Well this is the first I'm hearing that Greg Baldwin's the new voice actor, but I definitly didn't notice that it was him voicing Iroh in School Time Shipping, thought it was still Mako. Although when you hear him in Iroh's story in the Tales of Ba Sing Sae, you can notice a difference in the voices.
Still, he's managed to get the voice right pretty well if I didn't notice a difference (Or i wasn't paying enough attention ;D)

I just saw that School Time Shipping after I read this post, and I noticed a difference in the voice. Maybe it was because I was looking from a different voice, or something. It was an ok voice, but its missing something about the voice that is Iroh. I don't think he really blends the words together, or something like that. Anyway, I guess I'll have to make do though, seeing as he is the new voice. He was ok, but like I said, something missing.

It really is a shame that Mako passed away, he really was a very talented voice actor, he defintiely brought something special to Iroh. He also did the voice for Aku in Samurai Jack, another brilliant performance, he will be sorely missed I'm sure.

I guess we won't be able to tell for sure how he's going to handle the role until the next season. Boy I'm excited.
As for if somethings missing in his performance...well it's a shame I guess. I thought it was quite good, though I don't know anyone who can live up to Mako's excellent performance of Iroh. He was incredible. There was such depth, humor and wisdom.
Can you imagine how hard it must be to step into his shoes? Tough I'm sure. I wonder what Greg's methods are. I mean, I'm sure he's trying to emulate him. It's always tough to make an actor transition smooth.

I did notic this when I first saw schooltime shipping. I noticed that Iroh's voice was a little less gravelly...ah, that's not the word... anyway, so I backtracked and paused at the credits. However, I think that Tales of Ba Sing Se still had Mako's voice — I believe that was the last episode he did, hence why the tribute is in that episode, rather than the previous eppy he was in.
All in all, while it's not Mako, it's certainly a good cover. Only a slight difference, and I doubt the less hard-core *pumps fist* fans will notice terribly.

Mako was not only a voice actor, as I'm sure many of you know... but a well known Actor as well. He'd had rolls on broadway, was cast in the 1960's Mchale's Navy and had bit parts in more films that I can count.
He was to be the voice of the new TMNT's Splinter, and died the day after being officially announced.
I don't know about you guys, but I grew up with him and I will greatly miss the man.
