A year has passed since Fire Lord Zuko ascended the throne, and it seems like trouble is brewing between the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom once more. The Fire Lord and the Avatar began the Harmony Restoration Movement to restore the Fire Nation Colonies to their pre-war state by bringing any Fire Nation nationals back home, but for many of the citizens — of mixed Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom … Read more ›

This kind of occured to me while looking at the Avatar World Map. For those who don't know, Golden Sun is a series of 2 games for the Game Boy Advance. It takes place in the world of Weyard, in which the powers of the 4 Elements are sealed off by Elemental Lighthouses. Without the power of the elements, the world, Weyard, which is flat, is getting smaller. In time, with the elements locked, the world will shrink to nothing, the edges of the world will get bigger and soon enough, there'll be nothing. You play as Adepts of these elements and try to unlock the elements. It's a lot more complicated, but I don't have enough time to explain.
Here's where Avatar and Golden Sun share topics:
The 4 Elements are present and can be controlled by some people.
Example: Katara=Water Bender=Controls Water
Garret=Fire Adept= Controls Fire
Plus the worlds are flat and you can fall off the world

These may be only 2 common things, but they seem major to me, and I can't put this aside. Any other views, comments, or questions?

As a question before I get started: Did they ever state that the Avatar world was flat? I don't recall, though it might just be a slip of memory over some refrence in an episode I wasn't paying enough attention to. Still, I don't ever recall that.

Anyways, the show Avatar probably has no Golden Sun influences, whatsoever. The four elements are from very old beliefs about the elements that were thought to comprise all matter. In the show Avatar and the game Golden Sun, the world simply has their 'magic' comprise of controlling these four elements. So niether is most likely influenced by the other, but both are probably influenced by that ancient belief.

I don't belive anyone ever stated that the Avatar world was flat, but it just seems like it. I inferred that from the positioning of the Fire Nation and the East Side of the Earth Kingdom. If they were that close, then some things would look a bit different. For example, if you recall Episode One, Book 2, The Avatar State, you'd remember when the general and Aang were making plans to attack the Fire Nation while Aang was in the Avatar state, the general moved his finger across the map from the middle of the Earth Kingdom to the Fire Nation moving from right to left. Now, if the Avatar world weren't flat, then wouldn't it have been faster to move from Left to right? Also, I never noticed anything like a globe in Avatar.

There's that thought, or the Avatar World could be similar to ours. Pretend that the Fire Nation is the Americas and the Earth Kingdom is Eurasia. Taking the Atlantic route from one continent to the other is faster than taking the Pacific route, right to left rather than left to right. That could already have been considered and they simply chose the fastest route. Also, how often in anime and the like do you see globes and other such things in the background?

Still, you could be right. The show holds to old beliefs such as the four elements and earthly spirits, so why not also hold that the earth is flat (though it was originally discovered by a Greek that the world was round, not flat. Greek, as in the society that believed in the four elements featured in the show being the matter of all things).

Moving back to topic....

Golden sun as far as i can tell has no influence what so ever. as Doku noted. A lot of games, animes, shows use the theme of four elements usually comprising of earth, air, fire, water. Various things actually extend towards Ice, Lightning, lava, such like that. Also you have to consider that (if i'm wrong correct me) they use what is called "psi" to control what they need and it really isn't them that is manipulating the elements its really the Djinn.

You know the djinn the little creatures that look like a messed up rabbit? but way cooler lol. So ya i think if there was a connection its based on the basic ideas the world had already been through and which is referred to as a source for several things
