Haru gave his arms a shake, sending bits of earth flying everywhere. As soon as she'd told him it was okay, it was all he could do from doing some sort of strange dance in celebration. Still, he only had two more flags to go, and this seemed like a welcome change.

He nodded, indicating that he understood her directions. He made his way to the bank of the river and waded in, feeling the current hit him almost immediately. The cool water was a welcome change for the heat that seemed to be radiating off of him, so he didn't mind it. As soon as he was waist high like Hanabi, he stopped, feeling the rocks on his feet sinking into the sand. Surprisingly, he didn't bend in the current because he had such a strong weight keeping him upright.

So, the name of the game was kicks. He figured that she meant ordinary front kicks, ones which he was used to giving boulders to send them flying through the air. He readied himself, then made his first effort to kick against the current. The rock on his right foot barely made it up off the riverbed, met with a large weight that pushed it back down. He knew he had to know the limits of his movement against the current, so he started lifting his foot up little by little so he could test how strong his kick needed to be to get all the way in front of him. It took him a but of experimenting with both feet, but he finally figured the optimal pressure he needed his leg to apply to fight the current. He started kicking with both legs.

"I think I finally got the hang of it," he said, smiling as he continued to move his legs. The current didn't seem so strong now, and he was getting used to working against such resistance to move. This would definitely give him an edge in combat, especially against an Earthbender. If he could take being hit by a large rock and not go down, he would both stun his opponent and be able to retaliate more quickly. He didn't know a person alive who wouldn't be amazed by that.

As his thoughts revolved more and more around Earth Rumble, he worried that he might not be up to par with the other Earthbenders who fought in it, even after Hanabi's training. Still, it was a little less than two weeks away and he had more than enough time to prepare himself.

Hanabi frowned at him, "Almost right, but not quite." she said to him, "You need too have the environment grind against you, if the current is helping you then you are not practicing correctly, the flow of the water needs to be against the kicks, get used too the Motion of the kick, after you perform thirty more kicks, do one legged leaping stomps thirty times." she said to him her long Brown, almost black hair's lower fringes soaked by the up and down motion and the water washing up and down her, in the light it made her muscles look even more taunt and powerful, yet thin and ragged, it resembled the corded muscles of an agile panther almost.

Hanabi turned rotating leaping as hard as she was able with the rocks on her feet, her knee's coming out of the water, her raising a foot out of the water stomping downwards with force piercing into the water and into the mud bellow her sinking almost over her head in the water soaking her body, she braced herself and ripped her leg out of the mud, then leaped again stomping the other leg deep into the mud in the same fashion.

Hanabi looked at Haru, "That stomp should help your Fundamental Earthbending I wager. The fight against the water too raise and maintain downward pressure, as well as pulling the rock back out of the mud will act too embolden your legs, performing this stomp outside of water when you can do six of these in a row should be easy and a lot faster."

Hanabi was panting slightly, these workouts where strenuous even to her, her agile form was more used too climbing and fighting and wearing weights during strenuous long term exercises like week long hikes, this was a great workout for her too.

She figured Haru was amazingly strong, and figured six would be his limit, if he did more then that with what she had seen of his strength he'd probably have to bend the rocks off of his own feet and back float a minute to regain his energy.

"Your doing great, I'll say you have almost earned your fourth flag. Keep it up." she said to him, she was going to exercise him into the mud if she could, his determination was preserving him, but as Goh'Zhan, her father, had said to her; "Always work yourself tell you can no longer, move, then sleep, regain your energy and do it again, that will make you peerless amongst those your age, but you won't have much of a social life either. But hey, People are over rated."

As a loose rope that had been suddenly pulled taut almost to the breaking point Genthru stiffened. The rough trunk of the tree made a barely audible sand papery sound as he straightened so suddenly and his rough clothes protested. However this diddn't last long, he pulled forward from the tree and waved his bangs out of his eyes (an act which had been almost as instinctive as blinking for the past three years or so).

It did not move like an animal, even the most jittery ones were fluid and deliberate.

He felt something moving and shivering behind him, on the other side of the tree. His face reddened and his pride swelled in his chest like an angry balloon. Who would dare?! Moron. Come on then. Moves and breathes like a damn pick pocket.
His shoulders squared like an angry tom cat but then his common sense struck the bell, far too late in his opinion.

A pick pocket without a city? What would a pick pocket be doing way out here? What would anyone be doing out 'ere? I've nary seen a person sense the last village, not even a bandit or a roady. I suppose it could be a really cowardly bandit....following me ...trying to steal my water.

He still made no move however, if the thing had a weapon all it had to do was wait for him to come round the corner and then plug him with it.
Genthru's experience with this sort of thing, with any sort of thing, either went deep or dipped lightly into the pool like a drinking ladel. But he had it, with almost anything, diddn't mean he was good at it however.

He knew how to behead someone cleanly and properly and how to make a paper crane but his paper cranes turned out like they had been run over by a carriage and struck by lightning.

He was prepared to be calm, prepared to wait untill it gave itself up but then.

"Who's There"!

Not pausing in time to think of weapons, not pausing in time to considor it was a female voice that had said this Genthru lunged forward and around.
If he had been a moose lion he would have roared.

"I'd like to ask you the same thing"!

Even though he gave no indication that he was listening, Haru heard Hanabi's orders. He kept kicking except this time, he was keeping count. He was honestly surprised that he was strong enough to do all these exercises, but working in a coal mining village had apparently made him stronger than he thought.

"Fifteen...sixteen...seventeen..." he muttered as he moved his legs, feeling the pressure of the current let up a little with each kick. When he finally finished, he prepared to work on the leaping stomps. She had been right when she said that it was a fundamental part of Earthbending. He couldn't place a number on the many times he'd done it, but he was more than used to it. As muscle memory took over, he leapt forward as he normally would, but found himself limited by both the rocks on his feet and the current. Realizing that he'd have to jump forward with more force than usual, he let out an extra burst of energy as he jumped, moving forward only a small distance. Although he was worried that he wasn't going that far, he figured it wouldn't matter, especially with Earthbending. It wasn't the leap that mattered, it was the rock he could form by landing.

After a few practice leaps, he figured he'd gotten it down and began to count. When he finally reached thirty, he stopped, turning around to face his trainer. He was still out of breath as he spoke to her.

"Was that good enough?" he asked, splashing some water onto his head to cool himself. Despite the low temperature of the water, he felt overheated and drank some water as well to remedy this. It took several more large drinks, but he felt his body temperature drop slightly. Even that was enough to make him feel better, but he knew that eventually, his stamina would run out and he'd have to rest. He didn't know how willing Hanabi would be in that respect, especially after he'd gone so far in the training. He hoped that she, in addition to being a good trainer, would understand his limitations. Still, he was at least going to go for the last flag in an effort to achieve his goal.

Hanabi smiled after finishing her leaps, she was ready for more, "You are close to your limit, it's why we are only doing five flags now, and five flags later when I get more supplies, these are the free form exercises." Hanabi herself was sweating but she was not going to drink the rivers water, she was paranoid about just drinking from rivers in lands that saw travelers.

Hanabi with her scarred right hand wiped her wet hair out of her face, while it was wet it looked totally black unless one where to examine it closely, She lifted her foot and step at a time she left the water.

Hanabi instead of asking Haru to bend the rocks off of her feet walked over to a peace of outcropped stone and placed her foot along its groove leaping as hard as she was able too. Her foot slammed down the rock smashing apart hitting the granite edge under the rocks own weight, her doing the same with the other foot.

"Another thing to note Haru, earth formed with bending is looser then rock already formed, and with enough time and saturation, the rocks durability will fail." She looked down her stretching her stretching her legs, walking too Haru.

"Here, your fourth flag, you earned it." She sounded happy, her energy was visibly returning, as she smiled. "Come, there is one last flag, your almost tired out yourself too, this is the perfect time for the final exercise."

Hanabi herself was muscular, more so then any girl her age should be, she could split unsteady rocks off of her feet, her agile form was not that of an Acrobat, it more took the Agile aspects of the Acrobat's body build, with the power of a climber and the steady focus of a warrior, all in all it was almost a panther like build.

Hanabi arrived at the Cliff Face, "Bend the heaviest rocks you can onto your arms and legs, even if you cannot lift them, The flag is there." She pointed at the flag wedged near the top of the cliff.

"You are to leap and high as you can, crash down onto the earth and then propel yourself upwards like a Canon and the Flag. You are to use bending for this sense the rocks will be too heavy to lift with just your arms and legs, and with your bending you will have to control the rocky extents of your limbs and grab the flag, if you damage the cliff face you have to try again." Hanabi smiled, "You are gonna catapult yourself to get the flag, but not harm the cliff face. This is an exercise too test the extent of your power, and hold full control at the same time."

Hanabi looked at his arms and legs, "Make the rocks too heavy for you to Physically lift, You will depend on bending for the entire thing."Hanabi paused stroking her chin, "One idea is after setting yourself in place, to create an earth Catapult with your bending and use the weight of a Giant Rock too hit the flat and send you up, sort of Seesaw like." She looked, "Or you could try causing the earth beneath your feet to suddenly contort and throw you."

"Get the flag, you have too grab it between the rocks on your hands, you cannot damage the face of the cliff or cause it to collapse. Meet those conditions and you will have your fifth flag and we can press on, no rest, we keep walking." She said to him.

Hanabi herself was not inactive, she had taken a rather large and heavy peace of granite and was holding it, arms ahead of herself and was practicing walking gracefully while holding a super heavy chunk of granite, the style of her walking was of a delicate sort, where the toe met the ground first and then the bodies weight slowly pressed onto the base of the foot, then from there taking another careful step. The foot forms where the same practiced by people who planned to walk on Rice Paper. The heavy granite she held was to apply an incredible amount of weight to muscles that normally got little to no exercise with normal routines.

A response came more swiftly than she had been expecting, the words fierce without being hostile. When the mysterious killer leapt into view, Hayase's pulse spiked to a new record high due to sheer shock alone, but in the next moment her wide eyes had taken in this person's actual features, and though they were slow in analyzing what she saw, it was already dawning on her that perhaps she had been mistaken.

He was a young man with dark hair to his shoulders, incredibly boyish-looking to the point of reminding Hayase of her own son, whom this man looked to be about the same age. Rogue psycho killers didn't look like this, surely, not so green to the world to still have hints of innocence lingering. When she'd heard that horrible squeal cut through the air and footsteps behind her, the image that had burned into her terror-consumed mind had been of a great hulking human monster, scarred and covered with bloodstains both old and new, waving all manners of sharp, pointy weapons. This young man was nothing like that, quite normal actually; in fact, he looked just as surprised to see Hayase as she was to see him.

Blinking quickly and still trembling just a little, Hayase lowered her dagger to below waist level and regarded him with an expression of mingled confusion and caution. "Um," she began with a difficult swallow, "Were you not the one who just... ah, killed that... thing?" That was about as specific as she was willing to get; thinking about it too much brought the most unwelcome images into her head, and she had somewhat of a weak stomach.

Who knows, it was still possible this young man really was a loose killer, and he was skilled at luring his victims into a false sense of security. That way, he could get close to them and compensate for his seeming lack of physical might. But for what it was worth, Hayase sensed no malice from him, and what she thought were bruises on his face made her wonder if a recent fight was what had soured his temper.

Her fingers tightened nervously around her dagger's hilt. At any rate, if it turned out he was dangerous, she kept her body tense and ready to either fight or flee.

If Hayase's response had been one of bewilderment and mixed feelings Genthru was running along the same wavelength. His rough, clever hands which had been grasped vice like on his sword hilt loosened considerably, and his teeth which had been clenched in anger vanished beneath his lips into a brooding sort of pursed expression.

The narrow emerald green eyes did not relax and their cautious ferocity did not dwindle as he ran his eyes over the water bender from top to bottom, shamelessly and somewhat rudely.

Cocking his head as a gust of wind swept his hair into his face, he cursed under his breathe and almost lifted the green bandanna which hung in his other hand, but he restrained himself and instead brought his eyes back up to Hayase's own and stared into them before saying loudly, in his brisk voice which had a barking quality, akin to the dry, biting wind that had suddenly picked up and brought only slight releif from the North.

"Old lady, what are you doing out here all alone"?!

He expressed concern but it was a bare, hidden thing, it was more of an accusation , as if seeing an older woman traveling by herself annoyed him for some unexplored reason, or perhaps that was always how he looked an acted, as if he had a thorn in his side and was slowly being driven mad from the itching.

She was right, he was not malicious, merely rough, rude and agitated.

He had not replied to her question but demanded an answer to his own. The large ugly scar, shone waxy, pink red and yellow on his upper neck, it was that his hair and bandanna were supposed to hide, but soon his patient fingers (apparently the only patient part of him) shrouded it again and drove it back into it's hiding place on the pale pristine (though slightly dusty) skin.

His clothes weren't all that bright either but he looked like he at least kept himself clean, to the barest minimum requirement of that word.

Hey it was not his responsibility to impress people with his cleanliness! If they wanted that all they had to do was buy a tiger-cat...

Needless to say, Genthru was an otter-dog person.

Not even the tiniest attempt was made on his part to disguise his blatant staring, and Hayase could not stop a shudder from rolling across her body as he looked her up and down, no doubt sizing her up. Since coming to the Earth Kingdom, she had been on the receiving end of her fair share of such assessments, some looking at her with puzzlement, others with annoyance, and others still with far more depraved intentions. Yet for all her experience, it was still extremely unsettling to be looked upon with so intense a gaze, and though she had almost entirely convinced herself that this young man wouldn't hurt her, the anxious butterflies in her stomach insisted it wasn't too late to start running.

It did not help at all that he'd yet to answer her question, confirm or deny that he had killed something today.

A sudden gust of warm wind swept past them, freeing her bangs from where they had been sweat-plastered to her forehead and blowing them into her face. Hayase squinted as dust was kicked up, but didn't take her eyes off the stranger. She held her bangs back with one hand, and the other that was left gripping her dagger slowly flipped it around and slid it back into its sheath. It would not be needed right now. Hopefully he would see the gesture as an offering of peace.

He spoke then, loudly and harshly, not to answer her but to pose a question of his own. Instinct told her she should be insulted by his tone, speaking like that to his elder, but respect obeyed different rules in the wilderness and she'd learned that well. At any rate, she had been called worse things than 'old lady' in this country. Shoving aside her feelings of disapproval, Hayase tried to smile at him, but she suspected much of her anxiety still showed in her eyes.

"My apologies," she said, inclining her head. Due to her earlier shout and the scorching weather, her voice came out a bit scratchy. "I was resting nearby when I heard you; you startled me." 'Startled' was far from an accurate description. "My name is Hayase. I'm on my way to Ru Lien village, but this heat is proving more difficult to endure than I had thought. I'm afraid it frazzled my nerves... I'm not usually this nervous. Again, I'm deeply sorry."

With any luck, her quiet apologies would encourage him to lower his voice and stop looking at her as if she were something crawling over his shoes.

"Whoever let you out here on your own should be run through".

All it took was that anxious half smile for Genthru to drop his gaze and begin speaking in a slightly more normal tone (though it still was boisterous for such a young guy). I hate looks like that. It's like the feeling you get after a kind dog bites you. I'd rather her pull out her hair and start screaming like a howler monkey than look at me like that. She diddn't really answer my question either, those are the circumstances but why is she here? Why isn't she in some village braiding someone's hair, serving tea or burning incense? Thoughts of witches and desert sprits danced in his head but he determinedly pushed them away, no spirit would call herself Hayase.

She looked sweet but her voice was a rude reminder, it sounded like she'd swallowed a cactus-fly.
All he knew for sure was she wasn't going to last long in a state like that, Dark spirits! The heat was enough, but did I have to go and almost give her a heart attack? Guilt squirmed in his belly and he tried to make it melt away with loud justification.
"Ay I killed it, I had to, would have been a waste to let it go hopping around and die of thirst while I hop around on an empty stomach."

Memory flitted back into his mind and he cursed darting back around the tree quickly, thankful that his kill hadn't attracted any of the local insect life yet, the rabbit hang limply from his hand, but he diddn't swing it around or treat it with disrespect but held it dellicatley, it looked like a child's plaything, which a particularily enegetic child had dragged around.

"The creek back up there's dry now too, nary a puddle...hey Nervous! I'd say scared out of your batty old brains. Nyways, my name is Genthru". He said all this very fast with agitated passion and diddnt stumble on a word of it. "Hold this will you"?

Without asking for her permission he handed her the dead rabbit and righted his hair with the green bandanna which quite matched his eyes and made their brightness alll the more intense, though his expression was so exasperated that it failed and became humurous.

This time, Hayase could not stop an irritated grimace from passing briefly across her face, brought on by stirrings of indignant anger at his latest remark. "I... I beg your pardon?" she said, her parched voice cracking slightly with the last syllable.

'Let her out here'? She was not a helpless child who needed looking after, or was he implying that her capabilities were even lesser than that, amounted to nothing more than a pet escaped from her owner's leash? She was a grown woman, a four-month veteran of journeying these endless and sometimes merciless Earth Kingdom roads. Granted, it was a tiny amount of experience compared to the vast majority of travelers, but Hayase felt she deserved some credit for adapting to this life so quickly. Half a year ago she would have fainted in this intense heat. Now, while she wasn't quite dealing with it well, at least she could tolerate it.

"Your concern is noted, but I can," she coughed and cleared her throat, furrowing her brow, "I can take care of myself." Hayase reached down to gently touch her sheathed dagger for emphasis.

He said something else then, and it took a few moments for her to realize he was finally answering her earlier question. When she did, cool relief flooded through her. Not a killer after all! At least, not the way she had been led to believe. That dying squeal she'd heard was just the lizard-rabbit. Then indeed, this young man was just another normal traveler like herself, unhappy that his dinner preparations had been interrupted by a meddling, nervous wreck of a woman.

Speaking of which, he passed his catch to Hayase; her attention torn between deciphering his quick speech or the bloodied lump of fur in her hands, she was unable to refuse or retort due to momentary confusion. As she stared at the dead animal, only two things he'd said were deemed important (three, if she counted being called 'batty old brains'--was there no end to the insults out of this boy's mouth? At any rate, she refused to be moved by such a weak affront).

The first important thing was that his name was Genthru. Hayase sounded the name in her head as she lifted her eyes and watched him adjust his bandanna with care. Again, she was reminded of Banso; the day his father presented him with a real Water Tribe warrior's helmet, he couldn't stop touching it, constantly shifting it this way and that on his head as if it would never settle into a perfect fit. Yes, Genthru was just like her son in that respect, a young boy at heart, albeit a rather rude and mildly obnoxious young boy.

The second important thing was that the closest water source had run dry. She'd suspected as much, given the smoldering heat, but even then she had dared to hope there was someplace from which she could draw water to refill her skins. Alas, it was not so. Hayase digested this piece of news with sad, lowered eyes, digging her thumb into the rabbit's matted fur. The hairs had already turned stiff and dry.

It would be wise for her to continue on her way before she ended up the same, stiff and dry.

"I'm sorry," she repeated with a small shake of her head, offering Genthru his rabbit back, "but I should go. I would like to reach Ru Lien before nightfall." And her progress so far had been anything but steady. It was this infernal heat that drugged her steps! Hayase vowed never to venture into the valley again.

At her flare of anger Genthru curled his lip but some part of him was also pleased that he was able to get a reaction out of one so calm, some spirit was also not misplaced and usually only earned respect on his part.
Noticing that she touched the little dagger she carried with her he quirked an eyebrow She looks pretty useless, but am I mistaken? Does she know how to handle it?
Genthru had been wrong before, he was almost sure this old lady was 50 % class and 50 % hard knocks, none quite so hard enough however for this side of the Earth Kingdom, especially the open road and the way out of the way villages, he wouldn't be suprised to find her stripped and murdered in some back alley or knitting a new robe for some priest under the guide of a whip.

His sharp, pale features became even sharper at these thoughts and then his brow creased as one of the voices that guided him (on the road alone for far too long), often in the voice of his old Sensei Jake or his friend the shepherd Bengo.

Bengo had been murdered in a rock slide, Genthru hadn't been there to see it happen but he had been much younger than he himself, probably only 14 or 15 (Genthru had never asked, out of respect for Bengo had been a very mature guy, much moreso than he).

Jake was very old but tough, he might still be alive rotting somewhere in the Fire Nation, drinking tea and having heated arguments with himself. It diddn't matter; Genthru knew he would never see him again.

Anyway, it was the voice of Jake that scolded.
Don't assume so much, you know what your father used to say about that word, not that your father ever took his own advice.

It was good advice, but it was hard to follow with one so simple...and yet oddly complex. Older people both annoyed and enthralled Genthru with a mixture of their cursed babble, uselessness and lack of charisma and their experience, wisdom and courage.

Genthru had already drawn this old lady as a lost cause in his mind (those skins looked like they couldn't have supplied more than a gulp and a drink fit for a doormouse), but the way she looked alone (quite different from most Earth Kingdom Dwellers...a bit darker of skin...a bit bluer of eye), and that misplaced kindness...

Well the curiocat is out of that bag, all bets are off...speaking of bags...."

As his rabbit was passed back into his hands he made a great effort to keep his face straight and his voice un-blaring as he said.

"You won't, not with that amount of water and not with that fatigue, you may say that you can take care of yerself old lady but your definition of "take care" seems to be a little loose, actually it seems like you don't know what it means at all. Fortunate for you, I of many talents make it my business to take care of people and provide them both with protection and advice for a very reasonable price.".
He said this as fast as before, and again without stumbling but he seemed to be a little more cautious in his tone because his eyes were serious.

He truly did not think she would reach her destination by nightfall, and he was trying to persuade her in the most painless (well for himself and his ego..) -means to receive his help.

There was no room for a resentful interjection. Genthru simply spoke too quickly, and besides, Hayase's voice was not quite in top form. Instead, her face twisted through a short series of emotions as she heard what he had to say. The first was embarrassment, because his diagnosis of her situation was completely correct; it was just that, she was so eager to leave her rude companion behind that she was willing to ignore her weakened condition. Second, a burst of irritation that she failed to hide yet again, when he thrust forth another scathing remark about her supposed inability to look after herself. The last was surprise, not only because it was one of the few things he'd said that wasn't an insult, but because it was an offer of real help.

Help. Help. From this mannerless young man who was testing her patience in ways she hadn't dealt with in years? The heat, she could stand. Her thirst, she could stand. This person, she could not. Hayase would rather go the whole day without water than accept help from him.

Anger overtook her features in a rare breach of temper and she took a step forward, hands curled into fists and shaking as if she'd like nothing more than to temporarily forget her morals and teach him a physical lesson. But when she tried to speak, a scratchy ball of phlegm caught in her throat, and the tirade she'd meant to deliver dissolved into a hacking cough. Her hand shot out to steady herself against the tree.

Well... he had a point, even if she didn't like it. Her other hand still covering her mouth, Hayase leveled a fiery glare at him, then swallowed with some difficulty and released a sigh of resignation into the humid air.

"Very well..." She straightened as if making an attempt to salvage what remained of her dignity. "It seems I have no choice. What is your price?" she asked, her displeasure evident.

If he named some ridiculous sum, Hayase would still refuse, make no mistake. While she would normally be willing to haggle him down, the further insults that would doubtlessly be involved were not worth the trouble.

Genthru snorted like an angry horse , trust an old bawdy to be so quick to the shrift! Dosen't she even want details first? Maybe she's in a worse state than she seems. She's tough and no push over, I'll give her that. Though even the toughest boulders have been cracked by bastards like me. Annoying people is such a useful art, they should teach it in school A whole lot more effectual than crocheting.
As he smirked he was reminded how terribly bad at it he had been, he had brought his father his hand made scarf home from school and the old man had thought the Fire Nation Emblem was a duck.

"Hmmmmm well lets see now" he said rather sarcastically as he considered.

Well it was unavoidable, the practical side of him screamed in indignation. Genthru needed to come to terms with what he was getting into as well, the likeliness of the damnable act of kindness being profitable....was slim. If he aimed for too much she was likely to kill herself stomping off into the wasteland alone, she probably diddn't have much on her either. This was easilly remmedied, hey she was more than likely going to visit her relatives What else do older people have to do but bother their younger relatives?—, and for all he knew she might be someone's expensive mother!

It was best for small payments and if she decided his services were worth while he'd up the price as he helped her out more.

"You can pay me in small amounts every week or two and I'll work it off, it'll be cheap now, I can't promise it will be after awhile , if I can stand your company that long, but you'll find it more than worth while. I've been almost everywhere and done a little of almost everything, I'm also a bender---not a very good one but enough to keep the night critters away. I'm a specialist in hand to hand combat, and I often hire myself out as a body gaurd in between times when I get boxing openings or take part in a festival (not too many of those these days...people are just too boring I suppose). Despite everything else, I promise you will be protected. "

He picked up the stiffening rabbit, it was still fresh but it'd be singing with the flies before long if he diddn't get his legs in gear.
"We'll discuss the details over a meal and a drink, on me, okay, grandma...? You can worry about it while you rest your dusty bones and then give me an answer"?
The last word was said with slightly a more joking endearing note than old lady had been used, more of a plea than anything, what else? To convince her.
If she diddn't get the hint that she needed his help he sure as the Spirits wasn't going to waste his time chasing after her, even for a minuite. He diddn't have much to do, being unemployed at the moment, but he certainly had BETTER things.
Besides Genthru beleived in people making their own choices, even silly, stupid ones.

A small pay given in increments was all he asked for. Normally this kind of contract could put quite the hole in one's wallet, and Hayase wondered if Genthru had some sort of ulterior motive. Spirits know what thoughts were running through his head, what greedy dreams he had, but they couldn't mean good things. She might be hiring his services, but his attitude thus far had done little to put him in her good graces, and doubt about his trustworthiness lingered in her heart.

She studied him with a tight face but gained no insight as to what he could be thinking. Nothing to be done about it, then. All Hayase could do was pray she wouldn't regret this more than she already did.

Apparently he fancied himself a jack of all trades. The way he spoke of his many supposed talents was hardly modest, to her disgust, and not for the first time she lamented that his parents hadn't done a better job of teaching him manners. At any rate, she could interpret his bragging as meaning one of two things: either he was extremely skilled, to be to able to claim proficiency in so many areas, or he had spread his attentions so far and thinly over all those categories that he was actually adept at none. Her spite tempted her to believe that the latter was true.

But if nothing else, his assurance that she would be protected seemed solemn, for what it was worth. A hot, throbbing pain rolled up her spine then, harsh reminder of her exhaustion, and Hayase quickly hid a grimace behind her scowl. Yes, she could not forget what was really important: he was willing to escort her to Lu Rien and ensure that she arrived in one piece. Though she loathed having to share her company with him on her journey there, it would be much safer than going alone.

She nodded, stony reluctance still easily written all over her features. "That is fine. Your protection is all I ask."

However, that did not mean she had to endure his unjustified rudeness without complaint. Hayase could at least make it explicitly known that she did not appreciate his comments and wished for him to tame his tongue.

"Would you please stop exaggerating my age?" she asked, hints of anger and just a touch of weariness riding on her earnest request. "I am only thirty-six." Her appearance was not that close to gray and wrinkly just yet, she knew that as well as he; obviously, Genthru was provoking her on purpose. For whatever reason, he seemed to derive great pleasure from being disagreeable towards her. Well, if he was testing her limits, she accepted the challenge.

"Alright," she said, taking his words as permission to move closer. "Might I assist you?" Her quiet but firm tone made it more of a command than an offer. Already Hayase's dagger was pulled out halfway and she extended her other hand expectantly for the bloody rabbit. The task would go more quickly if they both worked, after all.

Haru's heart both flew and sank at the same time. He was at the last flag, but it was probably the hardest to get. Not only was he going to have to bend the entire time, but he was going to have to try and exert control while launching himself to get the flag. Unsure about this prospect, he lumbered over to the cliff face and broke the rocks on his feet, if only just to free them for a minute. He savored the seconds when his bare feet touched the ground, feeling closer to the earth than ever before.

With a weight on his shoulders, he bent four more rocks from the ground, each almost two times bigger than the ones that had been on his hands. Any heavier, and he wouldn't have been able to stand up. As he'd done before, he leapt in the air and slammed his hands and feet into the new boulders, feeling them melt under his touch and reform, trapping his limbs inside.

Hanabi's instructions were ringing in his head as he braced himself for his most diffcult task yet, and before he knew it, he was gathering every ounce of energy he had and feeling it resonate all over. He didn't think he'd ever put this much effort into Earthbending, but he was doing something he'd never done before.

A large part of Earthbending was manipulating Earth, but another large part of it was learning to manipulate the energy it took to create earthquakes and shatter rocks. The style he used was softer than other Earthbending he'd seen, allowing him to manipulate the energy more easily. Right now, he was concentrating that energy into something he could use to propel himself up to the flag.

With a strength that shocked even him, he let it go and channeled it through his legs, feeling the raw power when it came into contact with the ground. The mere shock was enough to launch him upwards, and he quickly diverted the flow to his arms, allowing the energy to lift the rocks upwards. With a loud crash, the rocks on his hands slammed shut over the flag.

It was then that the direction of his motion reversed and he began to fall. He used some of the remaining energy he'd stored up to keep his arms aloft and before he knew it, he hit the ground with more force than he'd realized.

Everything seemed to slow down as he processed what was going on. As he hit the ground, saw bits of rock going everywhere. He wasn't worried at first, but then he felt something that froze the blood in his veins: his feet touching the ground. The rocks on his hands followed suit, hitting the ground and smashing into pieces.

He froze there for a second, fully coming to terms with what had just happened. Then, with a heavy heart, he lowered his head to the ground and settled into his new pose. A lone tear slid down his dust-covered cheek.

Hanabi walked forward a grin on her face, he was doing well, but the rocks had broke and the cliff had been damaged. "Don't worry about it Haru, it is just an exercise, not a competition, if you mess up you have nothing to worry about, it's the same as building a sand castle."

Hanabi took the flag scaling with her muscular frame grasping rock after rock, her gaze looking for the next ideal spot, she put the flag into place and moved down climbing down at the same speed she went up. She pretended not to notice the tear on Haru's cheek.

"Haru, just get up, bend a few more stones and launch yourself again, and fix what caused your problem in the first place, if you do that, then you will be doing the fundamental step in achieving an ideal state. This is no different the Push Ups, it just uses rocks a cliff and flags, if you are too tired you will just have too exert yourself, in a year this won't even be hard to do." Hanabi smiled at Haru grabbing his arm and standing him up, "Just keep trying. This isn't a competition, this is you working on your own strength."

Hanabi stepped back smiling at the place she put the flag and back at Haru, she was pretty sure if he didn't get it this time, that he would finish tiring himself out and then he cold try later.

Haru wiped his face, leaving a trail of damp dust across it. She was right; he was taking this too hard. After all, the goal of training was to get better, and he shouldn't have been so disappointed for not getting it the first time.

A few simple motions rebuilt the rocks after he'd approached the cliff face, but that still left the problemof how he'd keep them from shattering when he landed. He closed his eyes, going back through the archives of Eathbending knowledge he held. His mind rested on a particular training session that he went through with his father.

-X-

As he listened intently, his father's voice melted into his ears and resounded within his head. He'd learned so much over the last few months that it left him reeling. His father took a breath as he began the next lesson.

"Some Earthbenders use a more solid style with harder strikes. We use a variation that lets us work with the earth more fluidly and lets us have more flexibility with our attacks. Even the toughest of benders know how to use the softer side of Earthbending to their advantage, and I'm going to show you how to do that." With those words, Tyro let a burst of energy out through his feet and flew high into the air, landing silently on the ground. Haru was stunned; how had his father managed such a soft landing?

"You see, Haru, not only can we bend boulders out of the earth, but we can change its texture to become something more like sand. That way, we can leap from great heights and emerge unhurt from the landing."

-X-

He snapped back to reality and smiled, realizing that he could apply what he'd learned back then to now. All he needed to do was soften the earth for his landing and the rocks wouldn't break. Simple.

He went through the same motions he'd used to propel himself upward, successfully grabbing the flag with the rocks on his hands. As he went upward, he bounced some energy off the cliff face and turned himself around so that instead of the rocks hitting the cliff face, his body would. Although he was going the same speed as the rocks, his back hitting the wall wouldn't damage it.

Finally, it was time for the fall. As he hurtled towards the ground, he sent out every last ounce of energy into bending the earth under him. He landed, but felt something different than the first time; his hands and feet were still trapped in the rocks. He opened his eyes and saw that instead of sinking into the ground, it had bent to accomodate the heavy rocks. He threw his head back and felt an elation he hadn't felt in a long time. He'd done it. He'd gotten the flag.

Hanabi smiled a slightly mirthful grin with amusement as she stepped forward taking the flag between his rock trapped hands with her scarred through right hand, "You have done extremely well Haru, you will practice the first five flags or as close as you can get to it in the morning tell you have five flags."

Hanabi gestured to the rocks, "You don't need rocks that huge, break them off and just make yourself some rock ankle bands that are about ten pounds each that you can hide inside your clothing and where them at all times, just living day to day with them will make you stronger. and should you be in a tight spot you will have a small amount of rock on you."

"When the sun sets and the light wains from the hillsides I will teach you the last five exercises in your new routine." Hanabi gestured to a fire she had started while his attention had been turned entirely on his training, over it, two Squirrelrabbets where roasting, "I don't have any spices for it save for some garlic I foraged, but I'm guessing your so hungry that it probably sounds good."

Hanabi gestured to a spot next to the fire where Haru could sit and watch his meal, right now it was still raw, but he'd be able to pull it off when it was done. To a nose that liked meat the smell wafting from the fire held a succulent meaty smell that made the mouth water, and brought the apatite to a high. However to someone who didn't like meat, it would probably stink to high heaven or be tormenting to there vow not to eat something that good smelling.

Hanabi was slowly rotating the Squirrelrabbets with care to make sure they got cooked evenly, it was an easy enough meal to make, hunt some game, process it properly and set it over fire and eat with spices.

Interest sparked in his green eyes, as well as mysterious, fickle flash of something else which defintiley could have been excitement, or anger or perhaps a mix of both, however he simply nodded and handed it to her. Genthru was not often capable of "shutting his trap" as many of his friends put it but he could see that making her more angry before she settled down and became aware of his motives was not going to help anything.

Quickly as a squirrel he flipped around the hard tortured roots of the tree and brought his pack from the grass, it looked heavy and was heavy, different pieces of odds and ends dangled from it on string and knots that diddn't tie anything bobbed in the air making hardly audible patting sounds as the bumped together.

It was brown, except for the faded red scarf that was for some reason tied around the largest loop that marked the top, the bag was fraying at the edges but it looked like it had been crudely but sturdily made of some thick animal skin by a carpenter who had tried to learn how to sew with limited success.

It was covered from bottom to top with tiny pockets about the size of a miniature tea cup.

Sitting on his haunches, alert and somehow puzzled looking, like a rabbaroo he paused with his face in the sun for a moment he breathed deep the smothered, sweltering air with flared nostrils and then searched his vast pack, his bandanna as well as the limited shade of the sparse tree shadowing his eyes.

After a moment or two he pulled from it, a bundle of dried sticks tied together loosely and several small balls of heather retrieved individually from the tiny pockets.
The thing, which probably explained most of the bulk however, was none other than an enormous water canteen, amid the large amount of scarves (at least six ,which he probably used for bedding) and many many maps.

The last thing, was a small worn pot in which he poured a rationed amount of water, and oil from a bottle from one of the pockets, (it was so small that a mouse could have drunken it in one go and eagrley asked for more).

As he did this, he remarked with another snort "Thirty six! It is indeed old to me, I've been in places where people grow to the ripe age of fourteen and then die happily".

He prepared for the fire meticulously.

However, he did not bring out a tinder box or matches.

Hayase seated herself on the upraised root of a nearby tree and set to work on the rabbit, beginning behind the neck and working down. The removal of its matted fur was an easy task, not too different from preparing a fresh seal or fish, though she had not been taught how to leave a hide together in one piece. Hopefully, Genthru didn't have need of it for some reason. As one who prided herself on a traditional Water Tribe upbringing, Hayase took great enjoyment in simple domestic tasks, especially those related to cooking, and concentrating on her work helped her calm down and relax in this stifling heat.

As a faint hum of a song rose in her throat, she glanced at Genthru from the corner of her vision every now and then, where he was busy on the other side of their impromptu camp. Now that she wasn't so angry with him, her mind wandered to questions of where he had come from and the circumstances that had introduced him to a career as a jack of all trades. The ongoing war made it entirely possible that he had suffered a loss of home and/or family. If so, it would go to great lengths to explain his general disdain, namely for Hayase... But even then, in case the war was directly responsible for some sort of suffering, Hayase refrained from bringing it up.

"How horrible, to die so young," she said seriously, canting her head with a small frown. "In the Water Tribes, one is not considered an adult until the age of sixteen." Those places Genthru spoke of must be in the most backwater reaches of the continent. Life expectancy was markedly better at the North Pole, four or fives times that, probably thanks to their many healing huts around the city. Indeed, most people rarely realized how lucky and sheltered their upbringing was until it could be compared to the less fortunate. That lesson had been taught to Hayase over and over again.

She heaved a sigh, the rabbit now pink and hairless, albeit bloodier than ever. As she offered it back to Genthru, she noticed the abnormally large canteen and lifted an eyebrow. The number of times she could refill her waterskins with that...

"You are impeccably prepared," she remarked, intending it as a compliment. She gestured at the canteen with her free hand, a wry and tired smile tracing up her lips. "I have traveled the Earth Kingdom for several months now, yet I am still unused to such a warm climate. There are still days where I find myself short of water, having misjudged how much I would need. That was never a problem at the North Pole."

Then, almost as an afterthought, she said, "Where are you from, if I may ask?"
