Plot Update 10 March 2021

A year has passed since Fire Lord Zuko ascended the throne, and it seems like trouble is brewing between the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom once more. The Fire Lord and the Avatar began the Harmony Restoration Movement to restore the Fire Nation Colonies to their pre-war state by bringing any Fire Nation nationals back home, but for many of the citizens — of mixed Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom … Read more ›

Drink 'til You're Drunk

"Aiiiishhhhhhhh!" Ling set her glass beer mug onto her usual table with a loud bang. Wiping her mouth on her trench coat sleeve, pale grey eyes skimmed over the patrons of the Golden Fan Saloon for the umpteenth time, looking for an easy mark. She was in a foul mood; today would have been her and Jia's six-month anniversary, but instead Ling hadn't heard from Jia for weeks since they had broken up.

The freckled woman rubbed her fingers against her temple. She had been planning to ask Jia to go steady, but instead the other woman had blindsided her, saying that they were moving too fast and asked for some time apart without any contact. On top of that, Kasumi had moved away from Republic City in fear of the rising bender versus nonbender tensions.

While Ling couldn't imagine not living the City, she couldn't blame Kasumi for being afraid.

A saloon girl she only knew by sight came around and poured Ling another full glass without a word. Ling waved her away, smiling a gratitude. She intended to get absolutely plastered tonight and have as fun of a time as possible.

Any consequences were Tomorrow Ling's problem, after all.

Haider had been feeling off lately, he had been working hard, harder than he should of but like others he needed to survive, walking into the building he sat by himself the chair creaked as he sat. Haider watched a woman poured another young lady a drink, he signaled her to do the same for him he smiled thanking her.

He looked down at the drink, he was not used to drinking alcohol but today was an exception, he didn't have work tomorrow so why not have some fun in the meantime. Haider kept his head down, this place was full of alcohol and when there was alcohol trouble was not far behind.

The saloon doors swung open and some nondescript kid walked in. He was lanky, and as he slid into a chair all by his lonesome she couldn't help but think he wasn't exactly the usual kind of person a place like the Golden Fan attracted. In the heart of the Dragon Flats — nonbender central, Ling liked to think of it — someone with the obviously striking blue eyes of a waterbender was an easy target for less scrupulous types.

Not that she'd ever been one of those. No siree.

She downed her mug and sauntered over to the kid, flashing him a gap-toothed grin. "Hey kiddo," she said, pulling up a seat at his table without asking. "You've got a pair on you, just walking into the heart of nonbender land like this." Her tone was light and teasing, with no hint of aggression. "What brings you to the Fan tonight?"

Haider looked up as a woman approached him the same one he saw from earlier, he was curious, people usually ignored him never paying him any attention, looking up he smiled back caught off guard by her words. Haider acted surprised to her comment trying to hide his abilities, his acting was rookie at best,  " Just wasting time trying to have a good time " finishing his drink, his eyes squinted from the unusual taste.

" What about yourself " he sat up straight to seem more confident, Haider was nervous and it showed, he had never been to this part of town, he didn't want to be targeted for his abilities as other were it was a dangerous time to be a bender, although she didn't seem to be aggressive.

The kid made a face as he finished his drink, and Ling couldn't help but laugh merrily. She remembered her first foray into liquors, and it was definitely an acquired taste. She motioned for a server to come refill the kid's glass and to bring her one too.

"Me?" she echoed, helping herself to the peanuts in the middle of the table, "The Golden Fan is my home away from home. Not that home is that far from here, anyway."

With a sympathetic grin she patted the kid on the shoulder in what she hoped was a reassuring manner. He looked nervous, like he hadn't been aware of what he was getting into when he walked through the swinging double doors.

"Your eyes," she explained, gesturing to her own striking grey-blue ones. "They stick out like a sore thumb in here. Eyes don't come blue as the sea unless the Moon Spirit is in your corner, you feel me?"

A server arrived with their drinks and Ling grabbed hers eagerly, taking a long swig before setting her mug down. "Relax though, kiddo. No one's going to bite your head off unless you start something; that kind of behaviour gets them banned from the Fan so as long as you aren't the instigator you'll walk out of here unscathed."

She stuck out her hand, not bothering to wipe the condensation from her beer mug away. "I'm Ling, by the way. Ling Yao."

The server came and refilled both their glasses, he stuck his hand out and shook the woman's hand, Haider was feeling pressured but at the same time calm, he knew there was a way to hide his attributes, " Yea I'm not from around here, not looking to start trouble either, don't know anything about any moon or spirits sounds crazy ".

Once again he finished his drink, it was just as bad as the last, Haider sat back in his seat putting his hands in his lap, " You come here often " his voice sounded curious yet at the same time hesitant, " Don't come around here often not sure whats around this was my first stop "Haider's eyes glanced around the room everyone seemed to be interested in their own situations.

Ling arched an eyebrow at the kid's denial of his waterbending status. She wasn't sure who he thought he was fooling — eyes as blue as the ocean were a trait unique to waterbenders, just as much as yellow and green eyes were representative of fire and earth respectively. The only odd ones out were airbenders who were born as nonbenders, but Ling suspected that any true Air Nomad had eyes like clouds or the sky or something.

Besides, her own mother had the same eyes as this kid.

But, Ling decided to play along, at least for now. It wasn't like he was trying to start a fight with anyone.

"Oh sure," she replied, unable to keep the slight drawl of sarcasm out of her voice. "Of course. I must be mistaken."

When the kid muttered that she must come to the Fan often, her arched eyebrow went even higher. She had just gotten through telling him that the Fan was her home away from home. Was he not listening, or...? Ling didn't have the patience to repeat herself.

"Yep." Her tone was flat. "Like I literally just said a few seconds ago. And you also already told me that this is your first time here. Also just a few seconds ago." She slapped the table a few times to try and get the kid's attention, which had wandered to observing the other people in the saloon. "You know, normally when people introduce themselves the polite thing to do is to tell them your name in return."
