The Fire Lord and the Avatar began the Harmony Restoration Movement to restore the Fire Nation Colonies to their pre-war state by bringing any Fire Nation nationals back home, but for many of the citizens — of mixed Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom … Read more ›

Ichiro sighed as he walked out of the door of his family’s restaurant. He waved to a few patrons as he walked out. They knew him well. He had worked there long enough now, and indeed spent many years there prior to that, that all the regulars knew who he was. He put his hands inside of the pockets of the black pants he wore to work, and headed back down the street on which the restaurant sat on. Normally, he would walk a few streets then turn right. That, after turning down a few more streets, would take him to his apartment. It was a good walk back to his place, but he enjoyed walking. However, today, he kept on walking. He almost thought about turning around to go to the park to train, but thought that since he’d done so for a few hours yesterday he deserved a break.

They’d been especially busy at work today, besides, so he needed a break. It was so hard for Ichiro to just relax sometimes. It wasn’t in his nature, and he figured by looking at his parents – he knew why. They both threw themselves completely into work, and didn’t often take breaks either unless it was scheduled. That’s why he had spent so much time at the restaurant when he was younger. That was just all he knew – working. When he wasn’t working, he was training. Generally, he liked his life. Though he wasn’t sure if this is what he wanted to do forever – other than Waterbending, it was all he knew. He had never really felt like being a teacher – and he was no healer – so what else did you do with Waterbending? He certainly had no desire to be a Probending athlete. Therefore, he’d end up running his family’s restaurant one day. That wasn’t so bad, was it?

After a bit of walking, and turning a few streets, Ichiro came to his favorite bookstore. He hadn’t been in here in a while, but he was sort of forced to go now. He’d read every book he’d had at home, and now needed a new project. The Waterbender didn’t read very often since he spent so much time either working or training. He did read, though, and needed a new book. It was only now as he walked inside the building that he realized he’d left his hair back. He thought that something had felt off… Reaching behind, he took the band in hair out, letting his long, brown hair down. Much better, he thought to himself. He had been in charge again today, though today he’d chosen a light blue shirt to wear. There was really no preference on what managers wore, as long as it was appropriate.

Ichiro started to aimlessly wander around. He wasn’t quite sure what he wanted to get today. He would read a little of everything, though he wasn’t hugely fond of romance. Although, he had dabbled in the later every now and again. He would read whatever struck his fancy. Today, he wandered over to the adventure section, and the Waterbender wasn’t sure where his feet would take in the bookstore next. Nothing struck at him, though, and he kept on wandering to the next section. Surely, he’d see something. Maybe it was just that kind of day when nothing seemed interesting. Giving a sigh, he slowly kept on moving to the next section. He was going to have to eat out if he didn’t get home soon, too, so he thought unless something exciting happened, he’d need to find a book and get home.

Kiana fiddled with the tassels on her belt as she walked down the street. It was her day off, and instead of spending it at home with her boisterous family, she spent it wandering around downtown. It wasn't any less noisy, but it was the kind of noise that blended into the background. It made her feel less like an outsider, and it still let her hear her own thoughts. Besides, it was unbearably hot in Gran Gran's house. Kiana had never experienced summer like Republic City had. She'd even had to ditch her regular clothes for a light blue dress and pants that tied at the knees. No boots, no fur trim, no heavy fabric. It was pretty strange to feel the breeze across her bare arms and legs.

Kiana was quickly learning that Republic City never slept. Even in the afternoon the sidewalks were crowded with people, and Satomobiles roared up and down the streets. She was having trouble getting used to the sounds and smells — cigarette smoke and sweat mingled with day-old food. At least her parents were settling in okay. Her mother was used to big cities — she had grown up in Ba Sing Se, after all — and though her dad was less cosmpolitan, nothing ever seemed to phase him. Kiana envied him, and she worried about him.

Kiana had gone a few feet past the store front before she realised it was the same place she'd stumbled upon the week before, when she had stayed back late to work. It was a bookstore, and it reminded her that one of her cousins had mentioned wanting a particularly hard to find book. If she was in luck, maybe it would be here instead.
Once inside, Kiana wandered into the first two sections, skimming over the rows of dusty books crammed into the shelves. What was it that Asha wanted again? Some sort of love story, if she remembered. Or was it adventure? The genres were displayed on a sign over each section, so she went through each section slowly, trying her hardest to remember what it was called. It was mean to say, but she hadn't really listened when Asha had been talking about it.
Kiana turned the corner in the next section and ground to a halt abruptly, almost walking into a young man with long brown hair.

"Hey!" she exclaimed. "I mean, um. Sorry. You don't happen to work here, do you?"

Ichiro had been looking through each section, wondering if he was indeed going to see anything that he actually wanted to read. Maybe today just wasn’t his day. He had moved into the next section and picked up a book that sounded interesting; though he was pretty sure it was misplaced. It was more of a mystery, and that section was behind him. It sounded intriguing, though – a murder mystery wrapped with intrigue and romance. He liked romance when it was paired with another genre, and not the sole genre of the book. Although there were exceptions to every rule, of course. You couldn’t judge a book simply by its genre, although books were categorized for a reason. It made it easier to find, although some books went in different genres, which made them harder to work with. That’s why he was glad he didn’t to worry about all that. All he had to do was read them.

He was thinking about just leaving so he could get home and eat rather than having to eat when he saw a blur nearly run into him. He glanced over at the blur, only to have it – or rather she – start speaking to him. She was asking if he worked here. Did he look like he worked here? It confused him a tad, but maybe she didn’t come in in here too often so didn’t know what one of the employees looked like. He was dressed rather nicely today because he had just gotten off of work, although, he figured the smell of food on him would say that he certainly hadn’t spent all day in a book store. Then again, maybe that was just him and the lifetime he’d spent around the restaurant. There is a very good chance that no one else could smell on it the same way that he could after having been there all day. Speaking of which, he really did need to take a shower when he got home.

Ichiro frowned for a second, before brightening up and giving her a small, easy smile. “No, I don’t, I’m afraid.” She seemed a tad lost to him. He wondered if she was new to the bookstore. “Do you need to find something? I’m familiar with this place, I might be able to help.” The Waterbender knew that he was under no obligation to help this new girl, but no one could say that he wasn’t a nice guy. Besides, he wasn’t having any luck at all in finding a book of his own. He had been in here often enough over the past… ten years or so… so he knew the place pretty well. That is, as well as anyone could. New books came in, stuff was rearranged, so nothing was really in the same place for that long. It wouldn’t be that big of a deal to see if he could help her. He knew it was job of the staff to do that, but they had plenty of things to take care of during the day. Besides, it was rude to tell her to go away. She seemed nice enough.

He didn't work here. Kiana felt her cheeks grow hot. Why would he work here? He didn't even look like a staff member.
She blinked in surprise when the young man offered to help her. That was ... unexpected, especially as so far she'd rarely found anyone willing to help her out for nothing in return. There was no sense of community in this city. It wasn't much of a surprise, but she found it hard to get used to.

"Oh!" Kiana said. "Thank you. I'm trying to find a book for my cousin. It's ... an adventure book. I think." She paused. "Or a romance. Something for teenagers, and I should have called her before I left work, I guess."
Kiana frowned thoughtfully. She was sure Asha had talked about it at dinner. It was about some old fire nation tale, and she told the young man so.
"I'm sure it's a romance, now that I think of it," she added. "But with everything on fire. You know, typical Fire Nation story."

If the man knew his way around the store like he'd said, maybe she wouldn't have to spend the afternoon searching for the book. Normally she wouldn't mind, but it was going to get dark in another hour and she didn't fancy walking through downtown by herself in the dark. She had her waterbending, so she was never helpless, really ... but still. It wasn't wise to go looking for trouble.

Well, that’s not much help, Ichiro thought to himself. Well, that was a definite hinge in this plan. Here, he’d thought that it would simple enough to find… but she didn’t seem to know anything about it, not from memory anyway. There was nothing to be done about the situation, though, because the Waterbender had already agreed to help her. What kind of person would he be if he just told her that he changed his mind and that she was on her known now? She seemed to be embarrassed, and rightfully so. However, he was not that kind of a person. His dad told him once that he could be too nice sometimes, but in his opinion, there was no reason to be rude to someone unless they gave you a reason. This girl had given him no reason at all, and if he could help her find the book she was looking for, then great. If not, oh, well, no harm in trying, right?

Ichiro almost groaned out loud when she seemed to know virtually nothing about the book she was looking for. He didn’t, though, and kept his face and voice completely even. This sort of thing happened, he knew that. The Waterbender wasn’t entirely sure what she was talking about either. What did she mean by “everything on fire”? So far, all he knew was that it was a “typical Fire Nation story” that was written for teenagers and either an adventure or a romance. It was hardly anything to go on at all. “Yeah, probably, but these things happen,” he told her, giving her a small smile. “Let’s see what we can find.” He turned and walked towards the back of the story where the children’s and young adult section was. The two sections were put next together, and all books that fit into either of those categories were put in there. From there, they were separated by author title, except for any series, which were put together and separated alphabetically. “By the way, my name is Ichiro.”

Ichiro scanned the books, moving around a little as he needed to and picking up any book that caught his eye as being from the Fire Nation. Some were misleading, and others he would briefly read the synopsis to her. “Let me know if anything sounds familiar.” He assumed that once she heard, it would strike something, since her cousin must have told her something about it. “Here’s one about a Fire Nation prince that switches places with a look alike, only for them both to fall in love with the ‘wrong people’ so to speak.” If the book didn’t catch, he’d set it back and move on. There was a few that had a Fire Nation character mixed with someone from somewhere else, but that didn’t sound at all like what she was talking about. “Um, here’s one about a Fire Nation girl, born into a noble family. She’s engaged to marry the Prince, but falls in love with a commoner instead.”

This could be a long day, if nothing seemed familiar to her. It was also possible that they didn’t have the book. The shopkeeper could order for her, but not until she remembered the name of the book. “This one is about a Fire Nation soldier who falls in love with an ex-con, only for him to become the suspect in murder, and she has find prove his innocence.” Some of these sounded interesting, and he hadn’t spent much time in this section in years. He’d been more interested in action-adventure books or thrillers. He was only looking at books that had aspect of romance in it. Sometimes, he’d read off one that was more action than romance or vice versa, but he tried to stick as much as possible to what she was saying. He wasn’t even really paying attention to see if she was helping him look or not. It was okay if she wasn’t. He had offered to help, after all. “Anything sound familiar yet?” He was hoping that something would jog her memory so they could narrow down their search a little bit. He wasn't an expert on Fire Nation stories, so he wasn't sure what she was looking for at all, really.
