Plot Update 10 March 2021

A year has passed since Fire Lord Zuko ascended the throne, and it seems like trouble is brewing between the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom once more. The Fire Lord and the Avatar began the Harmony Restoration Movement to restore the Fire Nation Colonies to their pre-war state by bringing any Fire Nation nationals back home, but for many of the citizens — of mixed Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom … Read more ›

Nick-nack and Doodad Shops II

Downtown Republic City is the centre of local commerce. There are a variety of shops here, selling items ranging from clothes to phonographs, and everything in between. During market hours, the shops are busy, their keepers calling out to the passerby on the street to take a look at their wares.

It's advised not to touch the merchandise unless you're ready to pay. "You Break It, You Buy It," seems to be a common mantra among shopkeepers here, and they are watching closely.

It started to look like staying over night at the shop was becoming a habit for the raven haired man. Yuuta never intended to work more than he should, but it just happened sometimes and with the whole craze of Equalists, it seemed like less and less of a safe idea to walk home at such late times. The shop wasn't too far away from the shared apartment with Shuai, but enough to make it a difficult and scary journey for him at such times of the night. He always managed to keep himself busy burning the midnight oil to study up on his herbs and the different remedies for the same kinds of illnesses. It was remedial and very basic, but at least it kept him busy. He could never sleep on those darned mattresses in the sick room especially with the thoughts that plagued him of catching something that could weaken his immune system.

"Bah! Get up," he heard his master say, taking Yuuta's cane to hit the metal frame of the bed. The cane clattered to the floor and he was left with a buzzing noise in his head and a headache. The apprentice swung his legs off the bed and held his head in his hands. He could never hate his master for such behavior since the old man dealt with his nasty attitude all the time, but there sure were times like this that he wished the man was a bit more of a stranger and didn't treat him so casually. He'd never voice these thoughts as it would accomplish nothing, it was just something that kept him sane for a few moments.

Yuuta left his cane next to the bed, knowing he wouldn't need it anytime soon so long as he didn't overwork himself, as he headed to the back room. The room smelled strongly of herbs and salt, a bit too strong, but the smell managed to relax him as he neared the bathroom. With a quick wash of his face and a comb through his hair, he deemed himself ready for the day despite the obvious lack of sleep. Oh well, today was one of his days that he didn't have to work at the warehouse -whatever day it might specifically be- so he would just head back 'home' earlier than usual to get a bit more shut eye. And as his stomach growled loudly, he made the mental note to eat some of those leftovers Shuai brought back from her work for a meal when he returned. It was never up to his standard of food, but it was at least something to fill his stomach temporarily.

As he left the bathroom, he realized he had lost the ribbon that kept his hair out of his face. The idea of searching for it passed but was quickly dismissed. He knew he had it last night, so it had to be somewhere in the shop; he would find it sooner or later on happenstance. Yuuta took a seat in the front of the shop behind the cash register, instantly putting his mind towards the check book that needed to be balanced though his head was still foggy from waking it only minutes ago. Even if he had woken up minutes ago, he doubted that the store had just opened. His master had seemed somewhat frustrated when he woke him up, so it was probably a few hours after opening, give or take. And with that and a long sigh, he tried to focus on his work.

This corner for sure, thought Shuai, circling a crowd of neatly dressed people before cutting left. As she hurried across an uneven and busy street the brown paper bag in her right hand crinkled. Inside of the bag was breakfast for Yuuta. A breeze that smelled of stale bread and oil blew past her freckled face as she stepped up onto the curb and threw her into a fit of coughing. "This is what I get," she mumbled in between coughs, "for not paying attention to directions." Yuuta must have explained the route about a hundred times to her, yet here the firebender was struggling to find the damn Herbalry. This is what I get for being a nice roommate, she growled inwardly stepping aside to let a rather large woman pass. In her plain, A-line navy blue dress Shu-shu blended in quite nicely with the bender and non-benders of Republic City. It seemed after Amon had made his little announcement on the radio that more and more people were taking measures of camouflaging themselves, especially benders who enjoyed adorning the insignia of the element they bent on their clothes. It really was getting much harder to distinguish benders from non-benders, but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing, was it?

Another gust of wind blew past her and stirred some litter on the street onto the sidewalk. Kicking it aside with her foot Shu-shu made another left and realized that she was lost. "I could be sleeping right now," she muttered under her breath. Pressing her hand down against her tan and black ribbon cloche hat the young woman turned on her heels and asked the person nearest to her for directions. After asking help from a few more people, which she usually did not enjoy doing, Shuai finally arrived at the store front. When she entered she was pleased to see Yuuta at the register. It always irked her to have to wander through the store to find her roommate since the owner wasn't a very cheerful guy. Yuuta being up front made things much easier. With a smile she shut the door behind her and slowly crept toward Yuuta. He seemed to be deep in thought.

"Hiya!" she said softly, but full of excitement. "Look what I brought'cha." Lifting her right hand she shook the brown paper bag above the register. "Breakfast! I hope you're hungry." Because if you're not I'll eat it.

People seemed to be getting stingy with their money these days. They barely broke even yesterday with people haggling their prices down so they made a single yuan's profit, if they were lucky. In one way or another, they still had the register full of money. It wasn't bursting, but at least it wasn't empty. Was it something to do with Among? No, that couldn't be the case; more than half of their customers were nonbenders. The other half were not-so successful benders that couldn't afford waterbending healing. Usually they were firebender stuck at the electricity companies on minimum waged jobs to provide energy to the rest of the damned city. And yet, it seemed like those were the guys Amon was after, the providers of the city. Or did he intend on keeping only firebenders around for that one purpose?

Yuuta jumped when he heard a voice and a paper bag was shoved in his face. "Shuai," he growled, though taking the bag of food from his roommate. "Please, don't sneak up on me like that," he said, heaving a sigh and pinching the skin between his brows and his eyes shut tight. After a moment to regain his wits, he opened his eyes and searched through the bag. Leftovers from her restaurant again? Not that he was complaining about a meal being delivered to him, but he didn't like scraps that no one else wanted, either. Oh well, he thought to himself, I am starving. And she had been nice enough to bring it even though this was the time she normally slept at.

Pulling out a bit of the food, he pushed away the checking book and began to eat slowly. Surprisingly enough, it tasted good, but that mainly because he hadn't eaten anything in a while. "To what do I owe this pleasure to?" he said with a hint of sarcasm. Yuuta was most definitely not a morning person. But, reluctantly, he added, "Thank you." Sure, he was a grump, but it didn't make him a jerk. Knowing as much as he did about his roommate, getting here would have been enough of a problem, let alone giving up her sleep time. He looked over his should, straining his neck to see over one of the counters, trying to see if his master was there. He was.

"Is there anything you need?" Yuuta offered kindly, hoping she would ask for something along the lines of cleaning salts. With his fear of getting sick, the idea of uncooked food germs still sticking to her hands and passing ithem to everything she touched. The thought was revolting to the young man.

Emi has now been working for Yuuta and his master for a while now. All she ever did was clean and run some errands for them. It was not great pay but enough that she didn't need to steal that much. Her stitches were now out as well, which Yuuta did.  She had a scar but she could finally waterbender well again. So almost everyday she would leave Haku at home while she went to work.

When she usually arrived Yuuta was just waking up. She would usually ask what she could clean.  Yuuta wasn't the happiest person in the mourning but who is. In the mourning it was usually little chores  because they haven't had any customers yet. But yesterday she didn't finish some chores that she had to do.
" Mourning Yuuta I'm just going to finish sweeping the floor, I didn't finish it yesterday."

So Emi grabbed the broom and started sweeping in the back. She liked being around Yuuta at work. He was a little grouchy at times but he was still a good guy. She then heard someone come in the store. Emi was surprised, they never had a costumer come in that early. Well she finished sweeping so she went to ask Yuuta what she could do.
" Yuuta I'm done with..oh sorry I didn't realize you were with a costumer.. I'll be in the back."

He waited for his roommate's response only to hear a different voice entirely. He slowly turned his head to see who it was, though hew already knew: Emi Matsuda, the ex-criminal (at least, he hoped) he hired not too long ago. Actually, the whole reason he had hired her was because he didn't like the thought of putting her back out there after helping her to go off stealing again, being chased down by the metalbending police. That cut she got on her shoulder hadn't been the prettiest when he first saw it; he hated to think it could happen again.

"Hi, Emi. Good morning," he said, greeting his coworker. He had forgotten she was here at the store already. Perhaps he was half asleep if she greeted him before or he never noticed her while he slumped around the store, getting ready for the day using whatever he could. Maybe he should bring a change of clothes to work just as back up in case he stayed over night again. What he was wearing right now wasn't dirty aside from the stain or two from spilling a herbal remedy yesterday., but it never hurt to keep clothes clean especially for the sake of good hygiene.

"Oh, she isn't a customer," Yuuta corrected her. "This is my roommate, Shuai." It was a bit embarrassing to introduce Shuai to people, mainly because he wasn't used to it. She was the first one to keep him around longer than a week, but he figured that was because they rarely ever saw each other due to their schedules. But the other reason was that he had a girl roommate. Most people might confuse them as to having some sort of other relationship rather than one bound by money and contract to an apartment.

"Shuai, this is Emi. I hired her not too long ago," he said, almost having forgotten to introduce Shuai to the waterbender. Again, because of their schedules, they didn't have a lot of face time. If they needed to communicate something urgent, then it would usually be by notes in the kitchen. They never sat down and simply talked about their day on a daily basis.
