Appearance: Rin looks androgynous, which is how she likes it. The girl puts considerable effort into looking like a man, due to her mistaken belief that no one would ever take a female thief seriously. Her black hair is short, and often hangs in front of her face. Green eyes peer through that hair, often with a stare of defiance. Very little below the eyes is ever seen, as the girl can usually be found wearing a black cloth over the bottom half of her face. Seeing as she comes from the Fire Nation, Rin’s skin is pale, no matter how much time she spends in the sun. In order to hide her bust, which, obviously, would give away her gender, she wraps it in bandages and wears loose-fitting clothing.
That clothing usually consists of nothing more than a black shirt and pants. If not that ensemble, then Rin wears something similarly nondescript. The girl does wear a pair of simple, black shoes, but often takes them off during her “hunt” so as to quiet her footsteps. For protection, and in case she needs to fight her way out of an encounter, the young woman keeps a pair of daggers strapped to her thighs. Also, there is often a large satchel folded and stashed in one of her pockets to hold whatever she steals.
History: Rin was born to a poor couple in a small village in the Fire Nation. Her parents were not benders, and thus, neither was she. This didn’t bother her, however, as she knew that many without bending ability were able to use weapons to become as strong as, or even stronger than, those with the ability. The girl’s childhood was unremarkable. She spent her time either following her mother around the house or playing in the koi pond behind her small house.
Rin learned early of the division between the rich and the poor, and it was very clear which side of the line she was on. As she matured, the teenager began to think of ways to help her mother and father earn some money. She took on a few jobs, but could never stay content with the work, and therefore moved on quickly. Eventually, the only option she could think of was thievery. And so, Rin began to steal. At first she only small trinkets that would not be missed and sold those to various merchants. Gradually, however , as she broke into more and more wealthy families’ homes and saw how they lived, she developed a fierce hatred for the rich and their extravagant lifestyle. She couldn’t believe that while families like hers were struggling to survive, others were wasting their money on unnecessary trifles. So the girl began to get bolder, stealing bigger items of more value.
However, the teenager got too cocky, and was eventually caught at the age of seventeen. She was able to escape punishment, but knew that she would have to leave her home, probably for good. So, without a word to her parents she departed the village, leaving behind only the money she had earned from her exploits so that they might survive a little while longer. Now Rin travels the Fire Nation, stopping whenever she finds a village, stealing what she can, and moving on before she can be caught. She is thinking of moving on to the Earth Kingdom to find new prey.
Personality: Rin has closed herself off from others, knowing that getting distracted could prove fatal to her career. Also, the closer she gets to anyone, the higher the chance that they discover her gender. However, she will engage in pleasant conversation with others if she’s not busy planning her next heist, and has a soft spot for the poor and beggars. She hates the wealthy, and it only the threat of legal retaliation that stops her from acting in an openly hostile manner towards any rich people she meets.
Were someone to get past the wall Rin surrounds herself with, they would find that she is actually a kind-hearted young woman. Most of the time she is close to broke, as she can’t resist giving the majority of the money she makes to those in need. The thief honestly wouldn’t mind traveling accompanied, having someone to talk to, but would never openly admit this. If someone wanted to travel with her, they’d either have to do quite a bit of convincing or follow her until she finally gave in.
