Name: Rei Hiraoka
Age: 18
Appearance: One might accuse Rei of having two faces, but it wouldn’t be an insult so much as the truth: she actually does have two faces.
One is a Kyoshi Warrior, and she clothes herself in the traditional garb of the group: a green kimono wrapped with a dark covering, a metal headdress, and the makeup that is their namesake’s trademark. Her raven hair is pulled back and held at the bottom by a golden string of silk with a small golden koi charm attached to it, so as to prevent it getting in her face at an inopportune time. Of course, she wears the traditional fans at her belt, and can use a katana and wrist shield when necessary.
The other is how she looks if one looked under the makeup and uniform. Her hazel eyes sparkle in the sun and often hide a certain mischievous quality. When down, her hair goes down to the middle of her shoulder blades in the back and frames a slender face. Without her armor, her stature is quite different; as a Kyoshi Warrior, she does her best to carry herself with a solid air, but she seems more demure when out of uniform. She is of average height (5’ 6”) and is often seen wearing silk robes or kimonos in her downtime.
History: Rei was born on the island of Kyoshi to a mother who made a solitary voyage from Omashu. Rei never found out about this, but it is doubtful that her mother would have ever told her. Before the baby could form any solid memories, her mother married a local man and settled down to raise her daughter.
Rei was schooled in the same manner as all residents of the island, learning of its history and of the Avatar Kyoshi, who founded it. At her “father’s” urging, she started to take combat classes as soon as she was able and found that she was quite proficient at it; however, she disliked it because she preferred to paint pictures over fighting. Her father insisted, and she sought audience with the leader of the Kyoshi Warriors, the resident tribe of women who protected the island, in order to see if she could join them. Of course, her combat skills were good enough and she was accepted, but she continued to resent the situation in which she’d been placed. In a surprising turn of events, her father presented her with painting supplies after finding out that she’d been allowed to train with the Warriors and suddenly, she felt her resentment vanish.
She spent several years training with the Warriors until she was deemed worthy to become a full-fledged Kyoshi Warrior; during this time, she took art classes and learned more about painting as well. Of the two skills, she is more proficient as an artist, but her warrior skills leave nothing to be desired as far as her skill level goes.
At 16, she was present on the island for the arrival of the new Avatar and Prince Zuko, but it was Aang, not the Warriors, who drove the Prince off. She remained on Kyoshi Island while her leader, Suki, went off to fight in Ba Sing Se, but that may soon change…
Personality: Her personality changes with her outer wear. As a Kyoshi Warrior, she is fiercely loyal and an excellent fighter, two qualities that make her a formidable foe. She follows the tenets of the Warriors as closely as she can, and she has become dedicated to training herself when she can with her fellow Warriors. She is more outgoing and fierce behind her makeup.
When not in uniform, she tends to be quiet and withdrawn, carefully observing the world around her. Years of painting have trained her eye to see the world around her differently, but that often results in her missing the obvious. Being introverted has its disadvantages as well, as she rarely, if ever, takes the initiative to start conversations with people or speaks without being spoken to. Being a Kyoshi Warrior allows her to exercise her more aggressive emotions, but strangely, she doesn’t resent being this way when in uniform. There are times when her Warrior side will shine through, but this is extremely rare.
