Name: Shtiya ((this is an Inuit word, last time I checked, meaning 'strength' or something similar — surnames are not traditional, so I didn't choose one.))

Age: 19

Appearance: Shtiya is short and petite, with a very feminine appearance despite the fact that he is a boy. He has refined bone structure and the thin stature of a person who probably ought to eat a little more, and he has the dark skin tone prevalent among the Water Tribe people. His blue eyes are framed with long lashes, furthering his androgynous appearance, though he wears his longish black hair tied back in a mostly-neat tail. He is muscled enough that it is obvious he does his fair share of manual labour, but it is also obvious he has not worked specifically on his musculature, nor is he proficient with weapons. On both arms beneath white wraps are scars from a suicide attempt at age thirteen. He does not like to acknowledge their existence or talk about them, therefore he keeps his forearms wrapped with white cloth at all times. He wears typical Water Tribe garb, though if he is travelling in warm areas, he will forego the anorak and wear the sleeveless tunic for warmer weather. The white wrappings on the arms, however, are hardly ever absent. He tends to carry a pouch with whatever healing herbs he can find with him at all times — and he'll spend time in any local trying to identify and harvest anything he could possibly use.

History: He's a North Pole Water Tribe boy, but he has always been more interested in the "women's" healing version of waterbending than in the "men's" fighting version. He is poor with using his Waterbending offensively. While he learned to defend himself pretty well from attack, Shtiya has never been good at attacking others. At a young age he requested to learn with the women rather than the men in the city, and he has spent most of his life studying healing instead. His father has never been particularly impressed with his second son, both because of his preference for women's arts and because of his feminine appearance. It comes as no surprise, then, that Shtiya is homosexual — proven by clandestine kisses with another boy behind a snow drift years ago. His father caught them and was, at best, displeased. Since that time, Shtiya has avoided expressing attraction to anyone. He tends to "fall in love" from afar. When his father suggested an arranged engagement for him, he resisted in a quiet way, and finally flat-out refused. They are not on speaking terms since that time.

Shtiya is the middle of three boys. His older brother, Nauja, is his father's favourite — his entire life, Shtiya has been asked why he can't be more like Nauja. His younger brother, Nakaka, isn't a Bender but is very skilled with weapons. Overall, Shtiya is the odd man out. Their mother died when Nakaka was born; Shtiya and Nakaka are only about ten months apart, and Shtiya privately believes that if his parents hadn't conceived children so close together (and if medicine were more advanced), he wouldn't have lost his mother so young.

Tending to spend a lot of time alone, Shtiya would never say he was dissatisfied with his life, but the truth is that he feels very stifled in the North Pole. He used to spend quite a bit of time with the koi fish, Tui and La, hoping to gain some kind of insight from them. Of course, that never happened, and now Shtiya doesn't venture to their pond at all. He prefers to spend his time working on his bending, or looking for new and inventive ways to use plants or other materials for medicine. He spent quite some time in New Ozai, but was removed from the city following his "coming out" as a Waterbender.

Personality: Shtiya is, surprisingly, very pleasant and somewhat shy. He is good with animals and children, and very easy-going. He tends to believe always the best of everyone, and to be loathe to consider anyone as 'evil'. He thinks there is good in everyone, it just needs to be brought out. He is an honest person as well, only given to untruth if it seems absolutely necessary. He doesn't like to talk about himself, and is easily embarrassed when questioned, but he will answer truthfully almost always to almost anyone.

Because of his love of the healing arts and humanity, Shtiya is not given to prejudice in any form. He is as likely to take in and heal a Fire Nation soldier as he is one of his own people. There is no doubt that he is capable of getting himself into a lot of trouble due to this, but he just can't help himself.

He has also been very interested in any kind of learning he could get his hands on concerning herbal medicine. This may be in part due to the emotional turmoil he still feels regarding his mother's death. Among his own people, he has always been quiet, shy. Not a warrior by any stretch of the imagination, Shtiya had a stutter when young. He worked very hard as a young boy to attempt to rid himself of this affliction, but children are not kind, and the stutter bought him few friends. He was — and still is, when home — made fun of often by youngsters his age. The stutter is still evident when he is tired or emotionally overwrought, or when speaking to someone for whom he feels sexual attraction. As a result, Shtiya doesn't stand up for himself much, nor does he go out of his way to make his opinion known.
