Name: Kaito "Kai" Katashi.
Meaning: Kai (ocean or sea), to (refers to Ursa Major or to soar/fly).
Age: 21.
Bending style: Water.
Appearance: Kai is one of those people that look relatively unintersting until you do a double take. Starting from the top, he has long-ish, straight, dark brown hair that comes down to the bottom of his eyebrows in front, to the tops of his ears on the sides and halfway down his neck in the back. The edges of his hair, however, look like he did a very bad job of cutting it, but he never actually cuts his hair.
His face, on the other hand, is nothing to shake a stick at. A little longer than normal, everything on his face (eyes, nose, eyebrows, mouth, chin) seem to be proprotioned to give his semi-triangular shaped face an even look. His eyes are a shade of choclate brown, breaking his family's tradition of blue eyes as far back as his great-grandmother. Since his eyes aren't hidden behind his hair, they're always in plain view. His nose is of normal size and shape, and his mouth is as well.
He stands at 5' 8", making him not-too-tall, not-too-short. He often holds himself in a tense fashoin, making it look like he's ready to spring at the slightest mention of trouble. Even though he's slightly on the short-ish side, he has a solid-looking stature that suggests that it might take more than a push to knock him down. When he moves, he embodies the graceful nature of water with his fluid movements, especially when bending. His stride is one of purpose, but also exhibiting a graceful, flowing nature. History: Kai was born in the Northern Water Tribe to Kazuki and Miyu Katashi, residents of the Water Tribe fortress in the North Pole. Their marriage was the result of an arrangement, but they were one of the uncommon couples who were actually in love with each other. So much in fact, that in addition to the traditional choker, Kazuki carved Miyu a bracelet to match it. Kai was born during the night on one of the starriest nights of the year, so his parents combined his heritage, Kai (ocean or sea) with the time of his birth, To (constellation). He hated to be called by his full name, so he usually goes solely by "Kai."
It was discovered by his parents at an early age that he could Waterbend. His favorite trick was to melt the snow under someone and freeze it to ice when they'd fall in the water. He began training with Master Pakku when he was 10 and continued his training for six years. During that time, both his parents and Master Pakku learned that he had an extraordinary ability to channel his chi through his movements. While Waterbending, it almost looked like he was dancing rather than bending.
There came a time when an altercation between he and one of his classmates got him removed from Master Pakku's tutelage. He grew to resent the Master, but quickly realized how constrained he'd been under his instruction. His parents, on the other hand, surprised him with the news that he was getting married. His betrothed, Yuzuki, was a strikingly beautiful girl with black hair and ice blue eyes. They were married two weeks after and began their life in the Northern Water Tribe. While Kai practiced his Waterbending for combat, Yuzuki practiced hers for healing. He would often ask her to teach him the healing art, a request which she happily obliged. Despite his ease with Waterbending, he never gained the ability to heal. He didn't let this discourage him and kept practicing. Over time, he too came to love the person he'd been arranged to marry.
His time with Yuzuki was cut short during the Fire Nation's Siege of the North. As an able bender, he joined the citizens in their effort to protect their home. He managed, through a combination of hiding and striking out occasinally, to survive the invasion after the Avatar defeated the Fire Nation armies. He discovered after the battle that Yuzuki, who had been hiding in their house at the time of the attack, had been caught in the crossfire of the Fire Nation tanks and died. He was devastated, causing him to go into seclusion for several months after her death.
After the invasion, he tried to resume his normal life but couldn't, due mostly to new security measures put into place in the fortress in the event of another attack. Without Yuzuki or his obligations as Master Pakku's student, he left the fortress and set out for the South. He finally found an Earth Kingdom village in one of the Eastern mountain ranges and settled there for four years before uprooting and leading a more nomadic existance.
For the past year, he has been wandering the northern edge of the Earth Kingdom, settling in random coastal villages and avoiding the Fire Nation when he can.
Personality: For the most part, Kai is very introverted, usually only speaking when spoken to. He projects an air of indifference, even when he's completely interested in what people have to say. He tends to take everything in before reacting, even if it means reacting a split-second after surveying the situation.
Kai is extremely determined and extremely able to adapt to changing conditions. It's this ability that allows him to formulate plans as he goes along, giving his actions structure and purpose. He also tends to get what he wants, mostly because of his persistence in attaining it.
Kai is also very fluid in his emotions, smoothly transtioning between moods instead of randomly and abruptly changing them. His personality seems to reinforce the meaning of his name, as does his bending ability. While in combat, he's always moving, constantly channeling his energy to use any water he can to win the battle. Due to his residency in the Earth Kingdom, he's also learned to use the water in plants. He strives constantly to learn more creative uses for attaining water to bend.
