Name: Henshin

Age: 16

Appearance:
Henshin is neither good or bad looking. The only distinctive feature he possesses is a crescent shaped scar along his temple and under his eye, which is usually hidden by his Earth Kingdom styled hat. He is shorter than average, hitting about five foot seven but is broad of shoulder. His skin is slightly tanned and his hands and feet are calloused due to his life of working in the fields. His eyes are dull green colour. His hair is short, brown and combed back.

He wears traditional Earth Kingdom colours, dark earth tones mostly with a long, baggy sleeved top that buttons across the shoulders with simple trousers and sandals, both very worn. He also wears a conical Earth Kingdom styled hat. Strapped to each of his biceps are butterfly swords, short weapons about the size of his forearms hidden by the baggy material of his top.

History:
When Henshin was still in the womb, his parent's village was attacked by the Fire Nation. This was not a particularly uncommon thing at this point in history, so the village was ready for the soldiers. However, they were only farmers and stood little chance against a trained military force. They were quickly overrun. Henshin's father was killed during the attack and his mother was badly injured. Unconscious, she was left for dead as her home burned down around her.

When she came to, she tried to get help from the next village on but collapsed soon after she left the remains of her home, contractions making it obvious that the child was coming now. Luckily, a passer-by came upon her and stopped to help deliver the baby as best as he could. The child was born healthy and before she blacked out the mother named him for his father, Henshin. She passed away moments later.

Burdened with an orphaned infant, the man took him back to his home near a Fire Nation occupied village and looked after him. In time, the man introduced himself as the young boy's 'Uncle Shing' and put the child to work on his farm. It was hard work, but his Uncle Shing was patient and persistent. Eventually, Henshin grew into a strong armed lad and when he reached his eleventh birthday Shing decided to teach him some new things besides farming. With the Fire Nation occupation of the village, he thought it only prudent to teach the child a way of defending himself.

Shing sat the boy down and told him how he had travelled most of the world and picked up a few things, showing Henshin a pair of butterfly swords that he was given and some koi fish sculptures he bought. First, he trained the boy in unarmed combat, giving him a feel for what he eventually meant to develop into Earthbending. After twelve months of horse stances and basic punches, Shing began the tutelage into the butterfly swords. Another year or so past and Henshin became skilled with the weapons. Shing now felt Henshin was ready to learn about Earthbending.

Shing began by saying that most people believed that Earthbending was about strength and endurance and while this was partly true, there was more to it than that. It was slow, hard thought, only moving with a purpose when it moved at all. It was a simple and practical element, often overlooked but always aware. Shing told Henshin that he should strive to be similar to this in all things. He taught the young man some basic moves, like 'popping a rock' and shooting it but Shing mostly taught him how to work with the earth, digging into it to find water for the crops and other techniques to help with the farming and supplement other aspects of life.

A year on, Fire Nation troops began to get suspicious of the constantly good crops that Shing provided for free to the villagers. They burned the field to cinders so that the villagers would no longer get free food and bend to the Fire Nation troops. Angry, Henshin very nearly pulled a weapon against the soldiers but was stopped by Shing, who told the youngster that the crops could be regrown in time. Unsatisfied by this, Henshin went out over the next few nights and began to rebuild the fields, using Earthbending to speed up the process.

When they heard that Shing's crops had already started to regrow, they came for him in the night, accusing him of Earthbending and took him away to an Earthbending prison. Shocked and ashamed of his thoughtlessness, Henshin tried to stop the soldiers from taking him but in his sleepy state he was beaten down and cut with a sword across his face. Letting them take him without a fight for fear they would hurt the boy, Shing shouted out to the young man that he should never hide who he was. Henshin never saw his Uncle Shing again.

Knowing that what made this place his home was now gone, Henshin took what provisions he could carry, along with his uncle's butterfly swords, and left the village. He began to just wander the Earth Kingdom, lost and without a purpose, trading what he has and struggling to get by.

Personality:
Henshin likes to keep things simple in his life. Although he likes to have some kind of purpose, he would prefer it to be a simple purpose. He also likes to take the time to think things through very carefully before acting, showing almost inhuman patience. When asked a question, he usually leaves a long pause before answering while he thinks about what or how much he should say. This occasionally makes him look stupid or slow, but he does not care what others think of him. He is proud of his heritage as an Earth Kingdom citizen however and finds it difficult to bow down to anyone, especially Fire Nation soldiers. Henshin enjoys writing haiku and growing things, but he has a hard time getting along with others due to his isolated life. In most cases he will say something very blunt that upsets someone, all without realising what it was he said that was wrong. Henshin has a distinct dislike of cowards.
