Appearance:
Soft features and long black hair often causes him to be mistaken for a girl, and his loose robes that hide is slender but toned figure. Unlike the common greens an browns of Earth Kingdom residents he has taken to wearing a soft white vest and long sleeved black robes underneath.
White cloth wrappings cover both part of his feet and hands, allowing him to get a better grip on things with his hands, and to cover and protect his feet while still allowing him a connection to the earth, something well needed and enjoyed by earth benders.
While traveling, usually on foot with only the essentials on hand he carries a single tube shaped bag on his back filled with various things such as a bed roll, scroll cases, a few books, brushes and earthen inks.
History:
Born on 83 ASC, Month 4 day 12, in Ba Sing Se as a resident of the middle ring to a family of well off scholars, he was named and encouraged to be a scholar as such and continue the family lineage to knowledge. He was ok with this as it was how he was raised and it was comfortable, as form of discipline was a must for a scholar he also learned martial arts, Southern Praying mantis Kung Fu.
While young he became highly sufficient with its forms. The footwork and stances "Mar Bo". The body posture "Sun Yen", and the hand form and techniques; Sao Fat, Kuen Fat, as well as soft and hard Chi Kung.
Gēn Bái Rú wasn't known for having many friends, as he was more pressured into his studies than socializing, he would spend much of his time at Ba Sing Se University, learning all he could, rather enjoyable as long as he had time to relax, meditate, and enjoy the grounds. It was here at the university that he learned that he was an earthbender.
This discovery was an accident, as neither of his parents were known to be Earthbenders themselves. He was 12 and they discouraged pursuing it due to their beliefs that it would only bring violence. It also unsettled them that he decided to pursue this new path of knowledge opened up before him.
By the age of 15 he had a good grasp of basic and moderate form and use of earthbending, and had completed his training of his chosen martial art, his path to mastery would have to come from himself, from travel. It was at this point he also craved more, he had read about waterbenders and firebenders, and what lettle he could find about the lost airbenders but it was not enough to him, he knew there was more out there that he could learn. Though he knew he would never be able to bend the other elements, he could not help but feel that there was so much more he could learn from the other forms of bending.
Another year passed and he would spend much of his time learning all he could, from books, scrolls, and other scholars from the last generation. As well, now he was maturing into a fine young man, his parents had given into his stubbornness, and stopped barring him from learning what he wished, but they were pleased that he had not become gruff, like their general view of earthbenders in the army.
In this point in His parents lives, they wanted to become much better off than they were, even though they lived a rather comfortable life, they envied the nobility, and politicians of the upper ring. And decided HE would be their ticket to the upper ring, but it would require a lot of planning. As such the next year of his life was spent sharpening his manners, turning him into the perfect suitor. He already had the looks and gentle elegance that people tried to leave only to those of noble blood.
During one such meeting he was on display for a rather decent, and well off family with noble roots, who had a fine daughter. His parents, scholars they were managed to keep the interest of the family, and an arrangement was made, He and their daughter Kanna would to be wed. He was put in a spot he was not aspiring to be in, and felt like a tool. It was in the coming weeks as he was made to get to know Kanna more that he made up his mind that he would leave Ba Sing Se. He told no one.
His 'great escape' was not exactly that magnificent as he was scared to death of the circumstances. As now Ba Sing Se was forcibly occupied by the fire nation army. This was unheard of to him, what was this war and sudden attack? He was now a refugee... and it was a shocking feeling to him, it was the first time he had ever been outside the walls of the great earth kingdom city. He saw the bright red flags fall covering the stonework symbol of the earth kingdom. He looked on for what seemed to be an eternity,
He was now off on his own, still in shock of what he had seen, taking a deep breath and putting a foot forward, he started on his journey.
Personality:
Naive from his growing up in Ba Sing Se, sheltered from even knowing of the war. He spent much of his free time enjoying the gardens around Ba Sing Se University, of the many things he enjoyed, tea by the koi ponds, while studying was one of his favorite. Feeling he could absorb the information better when gazing down at the fish as they slipped through the waters.
Though he is normally quiet and somewhat reserved, preferring Tea to needless conflicts. He enjoys Pai Sho, flowers, and sweet foods. However he dislikes the War, Shoes, Wilted flowers, and extremely cold weather since it stops vegetation and flowers from growing. Though he can appreciate the simple beauty that frost and ice can have on its own.
Though he IS Naive he also is extremely well learned, His major drive in life is knowledge, wanting learn everything he can about anything he can. From mastering Earthbending, to understanding the nature and forms of the other bending arts.
Usually calm and collected, on the off chance he is in a bad mood, usually just giving him some space and a nice cup of tea can turn things around. This can also be done using a scroll containing some knowledge that he doesn't know.
