Karena

Gia Avatar
Name: Karena

Age: 17

Appearance: Karena is quite tall for a woman, standing only a few inches shorter than her fiancé, Zuko. She is not thin by any means, and possesses a curvy figure – large breasts that curve into her waist, and out to her wide hips, along with a slightly rounder face. Her legs are also thick compared to most women. Most of the time, she is still in good shape despite the absence of a thin figure, she’s currently out of shape due to giving birth to her and Zuko’s child. She has brown eyes, pale skin, and long, jet black hair that she usually keeps back in a ponytail, though she is going to start putting it up to avoid having anymore people recognize her. Until recently, she wore Fire Nation clothes, despite her banishment, but since she’s become a wanted woman, she has started to wear Earth Kingdom clothes to avoid detection.

History: Karena was born the only child of two Fire Nation nobles. Her father is Makino – a handsome ex-Fire Nation solider who received an injury in battle that prevents him from doing heavy Firebending, so he was forced to resign from the army, much to his dismay at the time. Her mother is a beautiful woman, who is the essence of everything a noblewoman should be. They were overjoyed at their daughter’s birth. When she was four, they discovered that she was a Firebender, like her father. Her mother, who was not a bender, was not so happy. She disapproved of fighting, saying it was for the men. This was, of course, before Azula started Firebending, but that wouldn’t have changed her mind either. Nevertheless, Makino insisted on teaching his daughter.

Karena seemed to take to it well. She was powerful; though her father taught her slowly, and made sure she could the moves before she did them with Fire. Karena never complained about her father’s teachings. She loved them, and got along much better with her father than her mother. Her mother disapproved of her fighting, and insisted on teaching her what she would have to know to be a wife, and a mother, which was her fate. Karena hated her mother’s lessons, and since she could never find a way out of them, she zoned out during them, ignoring almost everything her mother told her, thinking that it would never be important. She wanted to fight! As she got older, Karena developed quite an attitude, not the submissive attitude her mother wanted, but a warrior’s attitude – unbecoming of a woman, she would say. Zhai-Li insisted on telling her daughter as often as she could what boys would think of her: “They will take one look at you, and say, 'Yes, I want to marry her,' and as soon as you open your mouth, they will run in the other direction."

As she reached the beginning of her teenage years, Karena was nearing the end of training as a Beginner Firebender, and was ready to move on to Intermediate moves, which her father would be unable to do due to his injury. It didn’t matter. She was eager to learn. She loved Firebending, it was her passion. However, her mother was worried that she would not get married, and Makino was getting worried as well. It couldn’t be ignored that Zhai-Li had a point – most men did not want a woman with a warrior’s spirit and attitude like Karena. While her beauty worked in her favor, her attitude did not. However, their prayers seem to be answered one day when the Fire Lord himself called upon Makino personally into his throne room. Makino, nervous, went willingly of course. There, Fire Lord Ozai asked about his only daughter. He had heard of her strength in Firebending, despite the fact that she had not reached a high level, because of her father’s teachings and his injury. He asked Makino if his daughter Karena had been betrothed already, to which he replied no. They hadn’t started looking for her yet, and he did not voice his concerns over whether Karena would marry. Then, much to Makino’s shock, he asked Makino if his daughter would marry his son, Zuko, the heir to the throne. Makino was shocked, but gladly agreed, and it was done – Karena was now engaged.

With a warrior’s spirit and an attitude like hers, Makino was worried about what his daughter would think about being engaged to the Prince of the Fire Nation. He told Karena first, without telling his wife. Karena, much to his shock, was overjoyed. As it turned out, she had had a crush on Zuko for a while now, and then prospect of marrying him was very bright indeed to her. Zhai-Li found out soon after, and was even more overjoyed, since she had been sure that she would never be engaged. Now she would be marrying the future Fire Lord in a few years time, since it was scheduled to happen when Zuko turned 16, since he was a few month’s younger than Karena was. There was a dinner with both families scheduled that weekend, and Karena and her mother prepared diligently. Karena still pushed off her mother’s teachings, but wanted to look her best. But, as fate would have it, things were not be as happy as they wanted.

As it turned out, Zuko was not thrilled, and disliked Karena. The dinner was a fiasco, ending with both teens screaming at each other. Zuko started the argument, and instead of being the diligent future wife she should have been, Karena yelled back. Makino and Zhai-Li were embarrassed, and Ozai was furious. He didn’t call it off, much to their relief. Their engagement party was not too much later, and it didn’t go well either. Zuko and Karena were not getting along. Karena liked Zuko a lot, but he didn’t like her, and like the warrior she was, she would not back down. Not too much later, the fated Angi Kai happened, that wouldn’t just change Zuko’s life forever, but Karena’s as well. Karena was heartbroken when Zuko was banished, not only at the prospect of never seeing him again, but at being sent on a perilous quest he could never hope to win. She spoke with Iroh not too long later, who told her what had happened, which made her furious. She went straight to the Fire Lord himself, and told him he was a fool for what he did, and that Zuko had been right.

Makino was right behind her, and was appalled at her speech. He begged the Fire Lord to give his daughter mercy, explaining that she was just upset at her fiancée being banished. Ozai replied that if they were so much alike, they belonged together, and then promptly banished her as well, until such a time as her fiancée returned. Karena and her father took that to mean never, and Karena packed her bags, said her final goodbyes to her mother and father, and left for the Earth Kingdom on the next available ship. She wandered around for years, struggling to get by, doing whatever odd jobs she could manage, and practicing her Firebending as best as she could without a teacher to help her. It was until two years later that she would run into Zuko again, something she never expected.

Karena had been trapped in a cave by a storm. As fate would have it, Zuko did too. It was pouring down too hard for him to reach his ship, so he went into the cave for shelter, only to find Karena. Karena was instantly attracted to him, no longer being the girl that he had last seen. She didn’t know, but he was as well. They were forced to remove their outer clothing to dry them, and sat near each other and the fire they made for warmth. Not too longer after, they kissed, and ended up having sex for the first time with anyone... Unfortunately, they were caught the next morning by Zuko’s uncle and some of his men, much to their embarrassment. Luckily, they did have a blanket covering them. They two didn’t say anything as they got dressed, and went their separate ways.

Over the next few weeks, Karena became ill, experiencing sudden bouts of sickness and fatigue. She managed to go to a doctor about a month later, who asked her if she had experienced her monthly bleeding, to which she replied no, even though she didn’t thought about it. He then told her that all the symptoms told him she was pregnant, and asked her if she had sex with anyone recently. Karena’s mind flashed back to the night with Zuko, and replied yes, though they didn’t get along. He told her she was almost certainly pregnant, and sent her on her way. Karena was devastated. She did not want to be pregnant.

Update from the RP:

A few months later, she found her way to Kyoshi. As she was debating selling her engagement ring, which she kept for sentimental reasons, she happened to see Zuko. Trying to protect Aang, they engaged in a fight, where she met Quan-Li, who would end up traveling with her, and Halaku, who would end up being a thorn in her side. They escaped as Halaku attacked Zuko, and fled to the mainland with the Avatar and his friends. Halaku showed up later, and they imprisoned him for the night. Kanea, also a banished Firebender, showed up. She realized Karena was pregnant, and proceeded to tell everyone. Karena confessed to her past, within earshot of Halaku. The morning, the group left, and Halaku went his own way.

They would meet him again, of course. A few weeks before she was to give birth, a fight ensued outside of Omashu. Karena fought, of course, though she shouldn’t have. There, Zuko asked her if she was really carrying his child. He had been told by Halaku. She replied yes, and Zuko walked off. The female firebender broke down into tears. Karena gave birth to a healthy baby boy, the spitting image of his father, and named him Nikuro. A few hours later, she went outside with Aang to show him some things that would help with Firebending, only to have Zuko show up. There, Azula and some of her man ambushed them, capturing the three of them and dragging them off to a nearby camp where an army was waiting. The Fire Lord told Zuko that he was a failure, depressing the man. With the help of a man, they escaped, only to find Halaku and his gang there. They helped them escape, having to fight their way out of course. Karena fainted, since she had just given birth, falling right into Zuko’s waiting arms.

They made their way back to Omashu, and alerted everyone that the Fire Nation was coming. They received some money from Karena’s midwife, and left, including Zuko and Iroh. Zuko had not left Karena’s side, something about which she was not going to argue. On their way to Gaoling, they got into another fight with Halaku and his gang, only this time Azula and company showed up. A fight ensued, and Karena was shot with two arrows in the back while fighting when she shouldn’t have been, and collapsed. They made it to Gaoling, and there Iroh, Zuko, Karena, and baby Nikuro would stay, going under assumed names, while the Avatar and the rest went to Ba Sing Se. Karena and Zuko were growing closer, and he was being protective of her.

While out shopping, a man came up and pestered Karena. Zuko came to her aid, annoyed that someone was messing with Karena, and as it turned out, the man had recognized Karena from a wanted poster, and accused both her and Zuko of being Fire Nation. Zuko defended his honor and the honor of his fiancée as well. Some soldiers showed up after Zuko had defeated the man, and Karena managed to convince them that they meant them no harm, and were not Fire Nation.

2nd update:

Soon after, the group left to avoid any more trouble, moving to a small village. Things were still going good between the new family, but as fate would have it, this was not to last. A week or two later, the Avatar and his group showed up. The group together traveled back to Ba Sing Se, where they were eventually captured in a trap by Zuko's sister, Azula. The Princess then took her nephew out from his mother's arms, saying he should be raised in the Fire Nation, much to the horror of his mother and father. After a battle, they made it out of the city, with Toph's help, who took pity on them after seeing Azula take Zuko and Karena's baby. Unfortunately, Aang was badly injured in the last attack, and lay on his deathbed.

The group moved to a small village to recuperate, their spirits smashed. Karena and Zuko's relationship was now shattered, as both blamed themselves. Zuko helped her when she needed, but with their son being taken, things were not good. The entire group's spirit was shot, all wondering if they could have done more with Nikuro being taken and Katara tending to Aang, who was fighting for his life.

Personality: Karena is kind hearted, and will do anything for those she loves. She’s also powerful, and a fairly skilled fighter. She’s also hard working, and does not back down from a challenge, which could also be her downfall. She’s extremely stubborn, and has a warrior’s spirit. She also has quite an attitude, which is part of the reason for her and Zuko’s animosity towards each other until just recently. She also has a nasty temper, and it doesn’t take much to set it off. She can be harsh and feirce when she wants to be, and can be quite argumentative. She's a fierce lover and a fierce friend, though, and definetely someone you want to have on your side.
