Plot Update 10 March 2021

A year has passed since Fire Lord Zuko ascended the throne, and it seems like trouble is brewing between the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom once more. The Fire Lord and the Avatar began the Harmony Restoration Movement to restore the Fire Nation Colonies to their pre-war state by bringing any Fire Nation nationals back home, but for many of the citizens — of mixed Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom … Read more ›

Sometimes it's hard to find an exact face claim for your character, and if you can't or don't feel like drawing your character, you're stuck picking out an icon that doesn't fully represent your character. Thankfully, as of late, picrew has come to the rescue! We're totally open to any picrew that follows our Code of Conduct, though it might be be more immersive if you select a picrew of a more serious nature as opposed to a chibi-style.

Below, the staff have curated some tried and true picrews that may be the answer to your needs (or, maybe, you just don't feel like searching through them. That's OK too.).

With the world so vast and the advent of instant communications yet to arrive, letter and notes are the only way to communicate with those far away—short of a long trip in order to visit.

The Correspondences board is a special RP area where your threads are written in letter / note format, as if writing letters back and forth between two individuals. These threads function just like any other thread (with you and your partner responding to each other in one thread), and all of the usual RP rules apply, but in this particular board you should write in first person, as if your character was writing directly your RP partner's character.

Welcome to Granny's Igloo, an out-of-the-way home somewhere in the frozen tundra of the Southern Water Tribe; it's not entirely clear where on the map it is, but it's frequented by travellers of all sorts who vouch for the quality of food and drink.

The proprietor, Granny, is a mysterious old woman with a wide smile and cackling laugh dressed in traditional water tribe clothing. Her grey hair is twisted and braided, and a very old betrothal necklace hangs from her neck.

On the menu is every conceivable tea possible, along with an assortment of seaweed noodle preparations. She serves everyone out-of-doors, under a wind shelter constructed of snow and animal skins with a warm fire in the centre.

Granny accepts visitors from sunrise to two hours after sunset.

When using the shop's proprietor, please keep the NPC actions limited to serving food and clearing dishes. Have a question? Please reach out to Staff or ask in the Help Centre. Thank you!

Since Avatar: the Last Airbender is now on US Netflix for the first time, the show is now available to a wider range of folks, some of whom may not have seen it yet! If it's a major plot event we have yet to cover on the forum, simply add [Season X Spoilers] to your thread title; replace X with the season number.

You're also free to discuss The Legend of Korra, but please also mark spoilers by adding [Korra Season X Spoilers] to your thread title; again, replace X with the season number.

You can also use the

tags to hide small, specific spoilers for future episodes.

As of August 2020, we are on ATLA: Book 1: Water — Episode 4: The Warriors of Kyoshi.

Just a few quick things!
  • Post your own work. If you have work by someone else you'd like to share, post in General Discussion.
  • The ProBoards TOS and Code of Conduct still apply, including to externally linked work (illustrations and written works alike).
  • Do not offer critique unless the opening poster specifically asks for critique or feedback.

Have fun! We can't wait to see your work :D

Going on an extended hiatus?

If you know you'll be going on an extended hiatus (over 2 weeks without logging in) please let us know in this thread! If you're able, we'd greatly appreciate knowing when you estimate you'll return. Please use your OOC account to post notifications.

Don't forget, before you go on hiatus please either close out your private RPs, or make your character's exit from an open RP.

This is a notifications only thread, so if you want to chat to someone about their hiatus, please send them a PM.

Aang seems to be taking the hundred years he missed in stride. Well, for the most part. There was that time he activated his Avatar State when he found Monk Gyatso's remains at the Southern Air Temple. Other than that, he seems just like a regular kid, aside from being the Avatar.

We spent too long on Kyoshi Island, though. Prince Zuko managed to find us—not that we exactly kept it a secret—and managed to destroy half the town before we escaped. We're heading to the mainland now, to the city of Omashu. I don't know what's in store for us there, but we'll find out soon enough.

As the leaves fade from a brilliant green to crisp reds and yellows, the RCPD is no closer to finding the party responsible for the death of the Reformist activist. While The Republic Times seems to have stayed mute on the subject, other, lesser-known circulations have begun posing an uncomfortable question: are the RCPD — an organisation comprised primarily of benders — taking sides?

Trust is thin on the ground in Republic City, and as the biting chill of winter begins to creep through the shortening autumn days, it seems only a matter of time before even the smallest misstep throws the city into open turmoil.

Happy timeshift day, [#username]! As of 13 October 2018, it is Fall of 172 AG. Summer threads have been locked and marked as completed, and will be archived on 20 October 2018 to give everyone some time to arrange new plots in relation to their completed threads. The Plot has also been updated to reflect the timeshift.

We have a tonne of things in store for you with this timeshift, including a major plot event that's bound to shake the very foundations of Republic City. We estimate that this major plot event will happen within the next few weeks, so keep on the look out for an announcement!

We've also made a few minor changes to the News and Census boxes for ease of use:

  • the title of the News box now reads Here's the Latest News to differentiate it from the guest welcome message
  • the Census text has been simplified to text to be more responsive
  • the Census now includes the current Plot NPC tally

The Plot Additional Info tab has also been updated with some extra Lore, to clarify some recently asked questions about bending and the elements.

Lastly, also have a few Holiday Plans now that the season is upon is. The @emissary is our latest Plot NPC, and she will be facilitating all Holiday events. First up will be the Halloween Costume Party, and will run from 14 October - 30 November. You can join in on the fun here:

That's it for now! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask in our Plot Q&A or in the Help Centre, whichever is more appropriate. Thank you for reading, and as always: happy roleplaying!

Plot & Story Changes

  • Avatar:

It's hard to have an 'Avatar' RP without an avatar, isn't it? But we also don't want to be limited by canon or a specific individual portraying the avatar. So, we've decided to dial this back to the base meaning of the word: an incarnate divine teacher. With enough time, training, and inherent skill, anyone can be an avatar if they are able to incorporate all teachings of each elemental style into their practice.

  • Airbenders:

Airbenders are fun and honestly we've been missing out on an entire character type all these years. While hereditary Air Nomads are just barely avoiding extinction, airbending can manifest in previously considered nonbender young adults with significant spirituality. Unlike other elements, due to the spirituality aspect, airbenders manifest their powers later in life when their personalities and beliefs are more concrete.

  • Less character limitations:

Before we restricted everyone to Asian characters. While we still ask everyone to create Asian-inspired characters, you are now welcome to also use inspiration from other non-western ethnicities. You want a Xhosa airbender? A Navajo firebender? You got it! We only ask to exclude western ethnicities, as there are plenty of other fantasies that accommodate those.

  • No Galgori, no Six:

This was the most difficult decision for us to make, but ultimately we decided that it was too difficult to constantly be incorporating the Galgori / Six into our plots while still retaining an air of mystery. Anyone who had or wanted to have a Galgori character is welcome to take some base elements of them and incorporate them into a nebulous nonbender character, but Galgori and Galgori history are no longer TARP canon. If anyone is interested in what the plot line would have been, please feel free to PM Kami for details.

  • Open Plot:

We do, however, still like the social inequality set forth in Korra season one. To that end, our plot will now reflect two political alignments: The Traditionalists who want to preserve the bending-is-special status quo, and The Reformists who want to abolish that system and treat bending as any other inherent talent — interesting, but not any more or less worthy of respect. Players will be asked to choose one alignment or another for their character, without restriction, meaning that as long as you write a character biography that shows their beliefs to align closely with a specific group, then their bending ability or lack thereof does not matter.

Also, we'll have a plot events lined up on a schedule, so we'll avoid having long periods of nothing — each plot point will be about 3-4 months apart, so you'll have plenty of time to prepare.

  • A bigger Republic City:

Instead of the RP taking place in three generic locations, we've broken Republic City down into six districts. These districts have specific environments and atmospheres, which we hope will give players the opportunity to participate in more places and feel more like there's a city atmosphere.

  • The other nations:

While we do not currently have non-Republic City locations planned, we are not opposed to people coming from different parts of the world and different nations. However, we continue to ask that any explicit mentions of the government / societal structures of each nation be avoided. In the future, however, we would not be opposed to including the other nations in the RP, provided that the story our players come up with lends itself to it.

Hello everyone! Thank you for visiting TARP.

For the past thirteen years, we have been proud to contribute to the AtLA and Korra fandoms. Whether through epic story arcs or through small, intimate character development, our members have brought together so much creativity and compelling storytelling and we are eternally grateful.

With that said, and feel it's time for TARP to move on. The lack of new episodes or prospect of a continuation of the Avatar franchise doesn't lend itself well to create an active fan community, and after thirteen years we believe that TARP can stand on its own.

From here on out, The Avatar RP will be an original roleplay only marginally inspired by the Avatar franchise. That's right! We're loosing the shackles of canon compliance and sending them into oblivion. We will be retaining some core elements (pun intended), but beyond that, the landscape of what is and is not canon will be up to all of you.

What You Need to Know:
  1. Registration will open on Monday, 06 August 2018. Please register with an OOC account to make your introductions to the community, then create a character account to post your first character application.

  2. The Rules & FAQ will have minor updates to adjust for the changes to canon policy. Please be sure to read over them, even if you are a returning member.

  3. The Plot and Story Info will also update. Please see this post for followup details. TL;DR: you can be an airbender, 'avatar' is a title not a person, and character possibilities are expanding.

  4. A new skin will debut on Monday. This theme will have some pretty big adjustments in preparation for ProBoards' upcoming release of v6; while v6 is not yet released, the new theme has recreated some of the new elements that will exist on the upcoming version. If you have any questions about navigating the new theme, please ask in the Help Centre!

  5. The plot is yours. We have a loose guideline of what we want to accomplish with certain milestones, we're flexible and any twists and turns along the way we're more than happy to hear. Just remember that this is a collaborative story and not a single-person fanfiction, and make sure your plot ideas can be participated in by the community.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to us! You can submit your questions by: posting in this thread, PMing or , posting in the Help Centre, or sending an email to staff@theavatarrp.com

Thanks, and we hope to see you soon!

Sometimes you just have to scream into the abyss until the abyss screams back. Sure, you could post to facebook or tumblr instead but then we wouldn't know what you're thinking. Which makes us sad. So come on, tell us what you're thinking. Feel free to ramble or just post stream-of-consciousness stuff.

Some caveats: no spamming, and please wait at least 24 hours before posting after yourself (this does not apply if someone has posted after you) before posting a new thought (remember, you can always edit your post to include new stuff if the 24 hours isn't up).

We do have spoiler tags on TARP! Simply wrap any spoiler text between

tags. If the entire thread is meant to be filled with spoilers, please simply include [Spoilers] (with the brackets) in your thread title, and it will be unnecessary to surround every post with spoiler tags.

Note: Since the LoK series finished airing in 2014, we do not require episode discussions to be marked as spoilers or wrapped in spoiler tags. Please use caution in this board if you have not completed the series. We do, however, require spoiler tags for any recent content produced within the last 90 days of your post.
